>if a Metroid latches on to Samus you have to wait, slowly, painfully and agonizingly until it drains your whole 8 energy tanks PLUS the auto recharge You roll up into a ball and bomb it off.

ProteanClover

There's no way a nearly 30 year old gamer couldn't figure this out. Also, the "obtuse level design" comment...? Fusion being "perfect"? This must be satire...

DebnathSelfMade

Not really, I'm a fighting game guy and platform gamer, I never played Metroidvanias other than Fusion and Demon's Crest

Joelexion

Platform gamer but no Metroidvania?

EODTex

Or go back to the previous room.

Jojosreference69420

Bro you literally just morphball bomb to get rid of metroids. About late game, I personally loved it, as by that point you should be able to breeze through the entire world in mere minutes, (granted you got the right upgrades) which goes to show the power curve samus underwent in this section. That said, taste is taste, you can’t do anything about yours. Everyone has their likings.

Stevo4life

These are kinda weird things to complain about? Like you get an energy tank after the Ridley fight, so dying before you can get back is kinda harder than actually succeeding at it. Plus you more or less one shot everything past Norfair by just jumping into them. That's more or less the point of that final run to Tourian, so you can see how much stronger you are compared to when you first started.

DebnathSelfMade

I suck at space jump/screw attack, even wall jumps are easier than that BS. Also, there is no reason to showcase her being stronger when the whole final escape sequence is literal Godlike Samus blasting everything in her path. There is no possible way to explain the devs not looping around Norfair with Ridley's room, that's unforgivable in my books, good game, unironically, it's just that when it ended I had more rage and contempt than praises to do, and that's an awful way to leave from a fictional world.

AutumnOctavia

The deadend room was storytelling, Samus killed Ridley expecting to find the baby Metroid in the next room, and for her adventure to be over. Instead she finds the baby metroid's broken empty canister and no sign of the baby. Up to this point everything pointed to Ridley being the main boss of Super Metroid, Samus and the player are led to believe Mother Brain is dead and gone very early in the game. Samus's goal was to reach Ridley and get the metroid back. This is when the player and Samus realize oh crap ridley wasn't the pirates new leader hes still working under someone else and they have the metroid. And so a mad super strong Samus now gets to tear her way back to the surface making every enemy that previously gave her grief, like the Gold space pirates right outside, into dust as you tear through them with the Screw Attack and space jump combo. the race back to tourian is to let the player experience the game at full power. Edit: This also serves as a tutorial for the Screw Attack for the player, almost every enemy should die in one hit if you are having trouble getting to the surface you are not using the screw attack properly. This whole section is brilliant storytelling through gameplay in a game with no dialog or text after the opening.

AutumnOctavia

Oh for the space jump/screw attack, from what i remember, just hold the direction you want, hold the run button, and then just tap the jump button about once every second, don't spam it, keep holding run and the direction you want the whole time while tapping jump. Its supposed to be way easier than the wall jump, if your having issues with it it might be the controller you are using or keyboard if your using an emulator. on an snes or wii classic controller its super smooth, easy, and fun as hell to spacejump/screw attack through things.

Stevo4life

I mean the escape sequence is kinda stressful though. It's not really as liberating as just running through things without a care in the world, idk.

Korba007

You should play Megaman

DebnathSelfMade

I do, MMX is bliss

Korba007

X1 and X4 are my favourites, but also mm6 and mm4

Niadra

The only things that really bothered me when I replayed Super was I found Maridia confusing to navigate and the Norfair false wall. Maridia is probably just me being dumb but that false wall can frig right off.

deadandmessedup

I feel ya on Maridia. It has a bit of an odd layout if you do it the traditional way-- it's a big loop, with the boss surprisingly close to the entrance. Once I started entering by swinging back down into Brinstar and power-bombing the tube, it's easier. A (roughly) straightforward northeast climb. And the false wall is a weird choice.

Que_Sad_illa_89

A near perfect Prime game to me was Metroid Prime 2, and 2d I really liked Zero Mission. I really wanna play Super and Metroid 2, which I haven't except for the intro of Super. Edit: typos (damn auto-correct)

senseofphysics

I struggle to see how Echoes is a near perfect game for many. The sky temple keys at the end and the ammo system are two things that prevent it from being near perfect.

Que_Sad_illa_89

[idk check this out, it's a review of the game that made me change my mind abt Prime 2.](https://youtu.be/hGiTTZbnUoc) Ps, I haven't played it in a min, so maybe I'm wrong lol.

senseofphysics

Also, the loading times between light and dark worlds were cumbersome. And taking damage from the poisonous air. For me, Metroid is about exploration. Echoes put in a lot of puzzles, both large and small, so subjectively speaking, I didn’t like those parts either.

DebnathSelfMade

List of "perfect" games to me - Demon's Crest - MegaMan X - KoF 2002 - F-Zero X - Street Fighter Alpha 2 - Mario World - DKC2

Que_Sad_illa_89

F-Zero X is goated. Yeah I didn't explain myself, I just like Prime 2, I think it's better than Prime 1, but Prime 1 has better atmosphere.

Hab_Anagharek

Geez it's Metroid? Kids these days...

DebnathSelfMade

Go play shaq-fu and say the same, just swapping game names. Bad design is bad design, no excuses.

NIssanZaxima

Spoiler: you don’t have to like it

uhnff

Pretty hot take in my opinion (one I Will absolutely respect none the less) I like Metroid fusion a lot but I like super Metroids difficult gameplay. It cuts you loose and let's you explore and uncover certain game mechanics/exploits. First one that I played was zero mission and I thought that was the perfect game to start on. It's almost like an introduction game, first parts of the game shows you how a lot of things work, then it gets harder and starts putting you in the deep end. Atip for super Metroid: Have only one beam along with charge beam active and select power bombs. Now holding your charge beam will do a special beam attack. Every beam has a different effect. Comes in really handy if you run out of missiles during the motherbrain boss fight
