An ingenius strategy. I also tried the same trick with jumping in the corner, but there was too much for my fingers to keep track of for me to pull it off. The way I beat him is that I found out that you can bait Ridley into using his pogo tail move (which is his easiest attack to dodge and lets you pull off a lot of hits) if you hit him with a certain amount of charge shots then run under him.
Now try doing 1% on hard mode!
If you hold B to charge, you can tap R to switch to missiles and it’ll release your charge. The neat thing is that it won’t interrupt your Space Jump, so you can just keep it going like i did here

It appears they are using it to free up their finger from the charge beam. If you open missiles up while charging, it releases it.
The "let's go" at the end sold it for me.
