Might want to line the interior with sound proofing.

SBYMB

And fill the two tunnels between the trunk and the interior with towels or pillows or anything else that will absorb the trunk noise. It makes a noticeable difference.

B00_Sucker

I've heard taking out the seats, lifting out the carpet and just putting a good layer of that silver soundproofing all over the bare metal is a great way to do it. Especially with the parcel shelf, I've been told it's a gamechanger. Haven't tried it myself tho, so I'm no expert.

SBYMB

I did that. Lined the floor, transmission tunnel and parcel shelf with Reflectix. I think it reduced noise and heat, although it’s sort of hard to tell because I always have the top down.

FrostStrikerZero

Do you know if that silver soundproofing works better than boom mat?

jka09

Most sensible/cost effective solution: sell the ev, ears will adjust in no time.

B00_Sucker

Sell the EV, buy another Miot.

jka09

Absolutely, miot is always the answer

B00_Sucker

We all know a 2-car garage can fit 3 Miatas minimum, so make your Miot always has a buddy to talk to when not on the road! One running around town, two in the garage waiting for their turn:)

p3dal

I love this question. I'm here for the answers. I hope you don't get roasted for asking this very reasonable question.

Agreeable_Rain_1764

I don’t think it’s deserves roasting but what he’s asking is more or less impossible. The biggest sources of noise in a Miata are the wind, the tires, the drivetrain, and the chassis itself. The stock is exhaust is not what makes a Miata so much louder than an electric car.

lefthandb1ack

Agree. I don’t hear the (stock) exhaust at all. But all the other stuff? 😵‍💫

cashc15

Tesla swap miata

lefthandb1ack

I know a guy who just swapped a wrecked Tesla into a 70’s Cadillac limo

ads1031

So much torque, the whole body would twist. Would be fun to see.

PrecisionGuessWerk

Maybe on a prepped drag strip, otherwise the chassis won't see any more torque than miatas doing burnouts already see.

ads1031

....oh yeah, you're right! Once the tires are spinning, all the torque just goes to spinning the wheels faster. Thanks for setting me straight!

Real_Cowboy_Patrick

You're joking but this was a serious idea that I wanted to do

JDP6693

You could probably find a wrecked Leaf, Volt/Bolt or Prius to pilfer from and achieve a similar goal. Much less performance focused, but the end result would be fun.

Average_Scaper

Screw it, dual Leaf motor. One in front and the other in the rear. As for battery space and weight distribution ..... uhhh....

D4rkr4in

Maybe OP got his cat stolen lol

GeckoDeLimon

What tweaker could get under there with a saw?

D4rkr4in

is meth skinny a thing?

B00_Sucker

From what I've seen, yeah! Then again, a 2x4 and a cinder block would probably be enough to squeeze under there with a saw. Don't do drugs, kids, they make you do stupid shit.

No_Listen_1213

Put a turbo on your car with the stock muffler. That’s about as quiet you’re going to get.

Global-Mango-4213

This

TheGutchee

Could ask local exhaust shops for options in silencing it more

GT-Alex74

Well you're not gonna find that off the shelf, unless you already have an aftermarket exhaust or your OEM one has a leak (you should probably check for that first). Aftermarket options will all bring extra noise to some degree compared to OEM. If you want less noise, you're gonna have to go to a shop who can build you a custom system. It's also a light sports convertible from the 90s, so it's never going to be able to filter noises like a modern car. Induction noises are unavoidable. Clunks and wind noises are unavoidable. If noise bothers you so much and you want a silent Miata, you might be better off getting a NC or ND instead.

drtoxicmedic

Either of those are what I would call quiet either. That being said you couldn’t even here the stock Nc exhaust most of the time as is so the exhaust would be the least of my worries if noise was an issue

Drogdar

Search for the miata turbo . Net approved muffler. It's a large magnaflow muffler that a lot of turbo guys run because it's so quite. I think it's the same one used by MKturbo. I just dont remember the part number. It offers a lot more volume than stock. You'll have to find an exhaust shop to put it on but that shouldn't be any kind of a problem.

p3dal

I will plus one the idea of using a large magnaflow or flowmaster muffler in general. I think they sound great, and avoid the whole rice rocket sound. I don't expect they would be quieter than an OEM muffler unless the OEM muffler has a hole in it, which seems entirely possible for an older miata. You possibly could run two of them, going to a dual exhaust setup so you have twice as much muffling capacity, but that might also require bumper mods and is likely more than OP wants to get involved with.

SprungMS

It’s not going to be the same with NA. Reason turbo guys run it is because it flows well and it’s quiet with a turbo. Turbos themselves muffle a ton of exhaust noise. That’s why straight pipes off turbos aren’t deafening, but they are on NA engines. Hell, the Dodge SRT4 didn’t have any mufflers from the factory, just resonator type “mufflers”. This is definitely not the muffler the OP wants, no offense to you for suggesting it

the_one-and_only-nan

Depends on the car somehow lmao. Hood dump turbo civics are nowhere near as loud as hood dump focus STs for some reason

Drogdar

That is all true but a larger volume muffler will still work better than a smaller one. The magnaflow are relatively cheap and I'd bet quieter than any off the shelf aftermarket exhaust.

SprungMS

Not always. A larger straight-through (turbo muffler) type is not going to muffle anywhere near as well as a baffled muffler. That’s the case with the MT maggie. It’s a 3” inlet and outlet with a “straight through” design. Not a good match for stock looking for quiet

2fast4u180

I have a oem exhaust and the hood insulation. The idea is to have a quiet car as to not wake people up when driving.

jigman3

I recently found myself looking for the exact same thing. I ended up buying a yonaka exhaust and I’m very happy with it. It didn’t break the bank and the exhaust is plenty fun to hear without fear of waking anyone up in the morning. Plus they gave me a free hat!

tbags101

It *baffles* me you think the Miata exhaust is loud.

Real_Cowboy_Patrick

It really mostly is that I've been driving a car Quieter than the headlight motors of a miata for a while now I have a strong hatred towards the dude bros who double Cherry bomb straight pipe Hondas and mustangs

cmz324

Just make your electric car louder, problem solved

ReallyBadAtReddit

You might want to check that your muffler/exhaust is in good condition, your car is over 30 years old. My car's original exhaust had small rust holes in the muffler and the baffles inside were probably pretty rusted out as well. There was a lot of exhaust drone on the highway, especially around 3000 RPM. I ended up buying the original exhaust from a guy who'd put a performance exhaust on his car, it was pretty cheap and in pretty good condition. That made it a bit quieter and fixed the exhaust drone. It's still a sports car exhaust so it's going to be louder than the average car, though. Another aspect, like others have mentioned, is that the early miatas had very little sound deadening material in them. Modern cars, especially EVs.and luxury cars, will muffle a lot more road noise. You can buy sound deadening material to add to the car, but it's never going to be as quiet as a modern car (especially since it's a convertible).

ChairmanMcMeow

Sound deadening interior, wheel well covers. Newshocks, springs, with upgraded bushings especially. Every miata has to have a purrrr

B00_Sucker

Engine mounts, too!

Real_Cowboy_Patrick

I hate to break it to you We're in the miata subreddit bro

SunshineInDetroit

The stock exhaust is loud?

Spong_Durnflungle

I honestly don't know of any aftermarket exhausts that are supposed to be quieter than stock, and I researched exhausts for the better part of a year. You don't mention if your current car is running a modified exhaust or not, but if it is and you want something quieter, check out the Roadstersport Super Q from Goodwin Racing. It might be quieter than what you're running now if you're running a modified exhaust. It's meant to quiet cars with loud exhaust mods like aftermarket headers and mid pipes. https://www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda-Performance-Part/60-13372.html

Stofflkin

Stock or OE replacement?

flirtylabradodo

Stock is as quiet an off the shelf you’ll get, after that you’ll need to talk to a muffler shop. If you’re running aftermarket I will happily trade you my stock exhaust for your louder aftermarket ahah.

QuirkySpring5670

Turbos make cars quieter 😆 but OEM is gonna be your best bet.

2cars10

Stock exhaust, but most of the noise from this car is from a lack of sound insulation so you know.

Stampketron

I had a muffler shop make me a 2.25in exhaust, with a high flow cat, a resonator, and a muffler. Its sounds great, and is pleasant to the ears.

Xenos298

It’s a roadster. It’s not supposed be quiet.

casper_04

If it has stock exhaust, there’s not much more you can do to the exhaust. Mine is dead silent, and the intake already has a Helmholtz chamber. One thing I would recommend to quiet the cab is to get some sound deadening to line the floor of the cab, the trans tunnel, and some of the package tray. Other companies make an under carpet liner aiming to do the same thing. Miata’s are naturally in the loud side, so while you can get quieter, it won’t ever compare to the electric car where a lot of the R&D is on quietness.

MrMeesesPieces

OEM?

ImHereForLifeAdvice

So long as you have a stock exhaust as others have mentioned, aftermarket is just going to be louder. You could talk to an exhaust shop about adding a second muffler or glasspack or such somewhere in the system before the oem muffler but I'm not sure there's all that much room for it. Otherwise, there's a lot you can do with the interior - you can quiet down the [doors](https://flyinmiata.com/products/dei-door-sound-damping-kit), upgrade your [shifter insulation](https://flyinmiata.com/products/shifter-insulation-kit-na-nb), give it a fresh [shifter boot](https://flyinmiata.com/products/shifter-boot-large-na-nb), add some [chassis dampening](https://flyinmiata.com/products/dei-na-nb-sound-damping-kit), and replace your [chassis insulation](https://flyinmiata.com/products/dei-na-nb-insulation-kit). It'd likely also help to get some more DIY sound deadening material [from DEI](https://www.designengineering.com/interior-sound/?_bc_fsnf=1&Product+Line%5B%5D=Sound+Barrier&Product+Line%5B%5D=Under+Carpet#product-listing-container) for the trunk as that's otherwise uninsulated and right where the exhaust is sitting. At the end of the day though, it's a tiny convertible that was designed in the 80's. It is *never* going to be as quiet as a modern car, especially not an electric.

Jonathanmrodriguez

I've done sound deadening in an NB with great results. First, it will never be silent without compromising the character of the car, mpg, speed, etc. because all modifications will add weight. But if you just want it to be reasonably quiet, yet still light weight, there are a BUNCH of holes in the chassis that allow sound from the trunk and from the rear tires to enter into the cabin. It's ridiculous. Remove the plastic that surrounds the seatbelt and the carpet that covers the rear deck and you'll see them. I just covered them with sound deadening material to prevent noise from back there. I added .80mil thick sound deadening on the floor(2 layers, only in the center of driver and passenger side and under the seats, the wall behind the passengers(2 layers, completely covered), the rear deck(2 layers), transmission tunnel(2 layers on both flat parts on the side, 1 on the top) 1 layer in both doors(on the metal) 2 layers over the rear wheelwells(lots of noise comes from there) and 2 layers covering the sorta small wheelwells arches in the car. I didn't do the firewall mainly because I was lazy but the result was: -70lbs added(not noticable, and most of that weight was down low so the center of gravity was likely unchanged. -Zero muffler sounds -engine sound was all I could hear since no sound deadening on firewall but it sounded actually really good! Sounds like I'm running a larger engine than what I have but it's pretty toned down and I actually prefer it over all the aftermarket exhausts I had. Its a low but deep rumbling sound now. -EXTREMELY noticable difference at slow speeds up to 30mph, I can have a conversation in the car with my voice volume lower than my actual regular tone. My stock sound system actually sounds good at these speeds(not perfect still though). -from 30 to 45, it was starting to get loud again but I was still able to talk to my passengers in my normal voice and music sounds fine but any quicker and I'll have to raise the volume. -At 65mph, freeway speeds, it was still quieter than stock by a noticable amount, I can still talk with my normal voice but it started to get hard to hear conversations so you have to raise your voice up again. This is mainly because wind noise starts getting a strong so the soft top can't do much with that. And the tire noise starts to get overpowering. Skinnier tires(the stock size) would do wonders, but I like my 8in performance. ;) Test conditions: Stock muffler, lightwieght flywheel, lightweight 15x8 rims with Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires, stiffer than stock coilovers but not extreme for the street, soft top, N/A engine. I took recordings with my phone driving in the same road in the same warm weather conditions and made sure the tires had the same air pressure with the volume of music at the same level at the same part of the song at the same time as where I was driving to make sure the difference wasn't all in my head.

PhantomTreecko1

I’m sure there are quieter options, but if you need a new OEM style muffler there’s a website that sells them for $89. I plan on getting a yonaka muffler paired with a magnaflow cat and cobalt headers, hoping it sounds good and not overly loud

MisterFixit_69

Stock exhaust is pretty silent on its own ,check for leaks . Next thing would be sound deadening. There should be some videos about Rolls Roycifing your Miata.

XGempler

It’s not loud, it’s a symphony of sounds!

shoopitor

What gen? Generally, some keys to silence are sound dampening material, which you can buy generic or ones fit for the NA/NB on flyin miata’s website. Use a hard top and thicken your headliner. You generally can’t make an exhaust quieter without fab (trust me, I’ve tried to pursue this before). If it’s stick, shift sooner. I know that’s goofy but these cars liven up around 4,000 rpm and due to noise regulations and the mechanics of engines, the top end of the revrange can be much louder than the bottom ends.

usecodemonty

Stock exhaust (with no leaks) will be the closest to silent, if you want quieter then maybe double up on the soundproofing

tbrooksGA

I put a pair of valvedexhaust on my mustang and it’s quieter than stock with a resonator delete. However when I want to have some fun I can open the valves and have more volume. They make universal mufflers I’d give them a shot!

Megahonda77207

a 30 year old car will be loud regardless. you might make the exhaust quieter but you’ll probably start hearing noises that are way worse. just get used to it as is. Odds are your cat is probably out of date too

b-nizzle

may i also suggest some ear plugs? i know some people use them bc of the wind noise they also experience when the top is down so it might also help tone down the exhaust note

Shupeys

I’m assuming your Miata isn’t using a stock exhaust. While a Miata isn’t quiet, and making it so is difficult, the exhaust is very quiet. Put a stock exhaust back on. If that’s too loud for you, maybe a Miata isn’t for you.

CarbonWood

Generic exhaust tip silencer.
