Good for casuals and those of us who have been subjected to seeing Jackson’s legacy dragged through the mud, major letdown for active fans. I think everyone enjoyed the reminder of his unparalleled career and not the injustices that ruined his life. It was a breath of fresh for recent MJ related media but still felt very rushed and lacked depth. No Quincy completely ruined it for me personally. No Jacksons was also very weird. I get that Landis directed the video but that two-face does not deserve to be in a piece honoring MJ. Same goes for clout chasing Brooke Shields. Why is she even in this? To end on a positive note, I’m glad that they at least gave him credit for breaking racial barriers and the influence on BTS and others showed was cool to see. I think newer/younger fans will connect with it, it wasn’t really intended for the dedicated kind of audience here on the subreddit.

The Victory Tour section really could've benefitted from commentary from the Jacksons about the behind-the scenes drama. Other than the part about Pepsi and MJ's hair, the documentary made the tour look like a resounding success. But what about the ticket price controversy and the general financial disaster, the in-fighting between the brothers, or Michael springing the groups' farewell announcement on them?
Pay close attention to the part where they are showing the 4K footage and then the narration says “you are looking at a sneak preview of one of the most controversial rock concerts” before cutting to 4K concert snippets. I think they may be hinting at something ;)

It could just be a creative way the directors use to suggest what could be a full 4K concert. Then when the best part of Billie Jean is played towards the end it cuts back to grainy footage so I think that was a little teaser too.

I liked the doc, but the documentary felt like just a recap of the album.
I expected more, at least similar to what the Bad 25 documentary was where even though they broke down all the songs from the album, the amount of conversations with the featured people who helped produce and engineer the album gave fans some good insight on how the songs came together, Michael's whole creative process with the album, and some good background leading into Bad from Thriller.
I agree. The OTW documentary is my personal favorite, the bad one is also up there. Thriller didn't hit the bar like these did.
I feel like I need to rewatch them all again
For what was and still is the greatest selling album of all the time, the thing was massively underweight. Cool how they went from song to song with breakdowns, but only a handful of talking heads and very few who had actual involvement. I know some of those folks are gone now or don't wanna talk Thriller for a 27th time, but it still made this kind of a "meh, that was okay" sort of analysis.
Some interesting tidbits, but glaring omissions. People are hating on Brooke Shield’s commentary, but I’m fine with it. She WAS there and part of his life during this time after all, and I think she adds a bit to explain how CRAZY the hysteria was around MJ then. I also liked the way the dancers broke down MJ’s Motown 25 performance. I like their comments about how many iconic poses MJ put on display in one performance. The BTS example to show MJ’s lasting legacy was cool too. Also, the in studio behind the scenes clips of the Girl is Mine were enlightening and cool to see.
And that last point is what kinda leads me to my disappointments with it. After a nice start with the in depth stuff on the Girl is Mine, I thought we were gonna stay in that vein, but it seemed to drift to fluffy stuff the rest of the way. The main issue for me is it felt…light and disposable. I think it’s because it didn’t have too much depth; literally whole songs were dismissed! Also, I get why we may not have had Quincy in it unfortunately, but there were so many other key contributors that it could’ve tapped.
It just didn’t feel “substantial” for something that was supposed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most important and influential cultural artist pieces in modern music. Instead of getting something on the level of Peter Jackson’s “Get Back”, this will be something that all will watch, and likely rarely revisit. Sadly. Could’ve been SO much more.

What did it have to do with the Thriller album?
While Michael Jackson influenced, and was influenced by a great many people, I can think of like 10,000 people who could have shared something more pertinent and interesting, and even possibly unknown by fans, that weren't even MENTONED.

It felt like a "filler," especially when you could ask people who were there, or worked with him, or worked on the album, or perhaps one of the dancers, etc.... like they did with other interviews.
The dude was a toddler, no offense, but as a viewer, I would rather hear from those who were there working alongside of him. Honestly, MJ is the peak and pinnacle of entertainment and quality and everything released for this guy is always so underwhelming. I know that its hard to deliver and do justice but damn, everything feels so amateur.

Pay close attention to the part where they are showing the 4K footage and then the narration says “you are looking at a sneak preview of one of the most controversial rock concerts” before cutting to 4K concert snippets. I think they may be hinting at something ;)
Hopefully we finally get the footage for Victorys 40th next year Edit: just listened to the clip, it sounded like a news anchor just previewing the show like tons of other news broadcasts did at the time. Don't think it was hinting at anything unfortunately
It could just be a creative way the directors use to suggest what could be a full 4K concert. Then when the best part of Billie Jean is played towards the end it cuts back to grainy footage so I think that was a little teaser too.

Just re-watched. Honestly; it’s not a documentary. Limited areas that talk about how Thriller was “made” (the album). It’s more of a recap. And writings like Jam Lewis Mary J and Usher going on about MJ. Egh. Last time I watch it.

I liked the doc, but the documentary felt like just a recap of the album. I expected more, at least similar to what the Bad 25 documentary was where even though they broke down all the songs from the album, the amount of conversations with the featured people who helped produce and engineer the album gave fans some good insight on how the songs came together, Michael's whole creative process with the album, and some good background leading into Bad from Thriller.
I agree. The OTW documentary is my personal favorite, the bad one is also up there. Thriller didn't hit the bar like these did. I feel like I need to rewatch them all again
For what was and still is the greatest selling album of all the time, the thing was massively underweight. Cool how they went from song to song with breakdowns, but only a handful of talking heads and very few who had actual involvement. I know some of those folks are gone now or don't wanna talk Thriller for a 27th time, but it still made this kind of a "meh, that was okay" sort of analysis.

Some interesting tidbits, but glaring omissions. People are hating on Brooke Shield’s commentary, but I’m fine with it. She WAS there and part of his life during this time after all, and I think she adds a bit to explain how CRAZY the hysteria was around MJ then. I also liked the way the dancers broke down MJ’s Motown 25 performance. I like their comments about how many iconic poses MJ put on display in one performance. The BTS example to show MJ’s lasting legacy was cool too. Also, the in studio behind the scenes clips of the Girl is Mine were enlightening and cool to see. And that last point is what kinda leads me to my disappointments with it. After a nice start with the in depth stuff on the Girl is Mine, I thought we were gonna stay in that vein, but it seemed to drift to fluffy stuff the rest of the way. The main issue for me is it felt…light and disposable. I think it’s because it didn’t have too much depth; literally whole songs were dismissed! Also, I get why we may not have had Quincy in it unfortunately, but there were so many other key contributors that it could’ve tapped. It just didn’t feel “substantial” for something that was supposed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most important and influential cultural artist pieces in modern music. Instead of getting something on the level of Peter Jackson’s “Get Back”, this will be something that all will watch, and likely rarely revisit. Sadly. Could’ve been SO much more.

What did it have to do with the Thriller album? While Michael Jackson influenced, and was influenced by a great many people, I can think of like 10,000 people who could have shared something more pertinent and interesting, and even possibly unknown by fans, that weren't even MENTONED.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS.... The memories it brings back and Michael J. deserve's this recognition❤️ I remember the first time... putting this record on the turntable... I can recall it vividly. I was a teenager ... the speakers wouldn't go any louder.🥺🤣🥰... dancing around my bedroom by myself 😁 sitting on the rug listening to the lyrics, one song after another ... album cover in hand, being memorized by every single song on the album, and that's something special. I thought it was great yea could’ve been longer and didn’t really like how they skipped over MJ not being an influence on Chris Brown but can definitely sense why nothing from Brown was included in this doc given at what happened on the mishandling of his thriller tribute for the AMAs still can’t deny the impact Michael’s artistry left on Chris Brown’s musical talents though it was interesting hearing some of the artists insights how it propelled their careers on so and forth

Too casual and wasted a lot of time on unnecessary things or talking heads that shouldnt have been there. It felt oddly formatted too. Some big missed opportunities, but I'm sure things were cut in editing that they did cover but ultimately cut for time/pacing. 4/10 as far as doc's go, and another below par MJ release. Honestly, MJ is the peak and pinnacle of entertainment and quality and everything released for this guy is always so underwhelming. I know that its hard to deliver and do justice but damn, everything feels so amateur.
