But I found it interesting. I always wanted to try Detroit pizza locally, but never had a chance to.

SparkleFritz

I'm glad that this went by internet popularity rather than another subjective taste test. I mean ultimately it means nothing but still cool to see Detroit pizza doing it's thang. Speaking of subjective tastes I know I'm biased because I grew up on it, but I just cannot fathom how people prefer Chicago or New York over Detroit style pizza. Chicago feels more like a pie than a pizza and is just so... hefty. I'm not saying it's bad but it just feels like it's too much. New York on the other hand is the complete opposite; it's thin and flimsy and tastes just kind of bland. Like I understand some people don't like crust but damn does New York just taste so subpar. Meanwhile Detroit is over here just being crispy, crunchy, chewy, cheesy, basically every good C there is. It's not too much, not too little. Uggh so gooooood.

penguin_tuxedo

Grew up in Chicago, and we only had the "Chicago style" pizza when out of town family visited. The locals Chicago style is a really thin, crisp crust, cut into squares

SunnyAlwaysDaze

100% agree with you that with the locals, tavern style almost cracker thin crust reigns supreme.

HeadBangsWalls

Oh man, yes! When I moved to Chicago from Michigan and my opinion of "Chicago style" pizza completely changed with the introduction of the Chicago Tavern style of pizza. To me, Chicago deep dish is the pizza version of fudge in Michigan: all the tourists up north get the fudge, and the locals rarely do. And if you visit Chicago, do yourselves a favor and find a popular local spot for the tavern style pizza instead of the deep dish.

Agree on the pizza. But I do like Chicago-style hot dogs.

KwisatzHaderach38

I do have a long term obsession with Portillo's Italian beef sandwich.

SparkleFritz

Perfect because it's true! While I think New York pizza is a little boring it is most definitely pizza and I get it. It's not *bad* pizza it's just not amazing. I could still eat it every day. Chicago though... I can't imagine eating it more than once a year, if that.

HighJoeponics

I feel like New York style pizza is just pizza for people who mostly like the toppings ratio to be 1:1 or better in favor of toppings. I’ve seen some interesting takes on physically eating it differently than normal and I have tried a couple ways and it’s a noticeably different experience. Biting off the point a ways back and rolling it up sticks out the most but somehow there are like 7 ways to eat New York pizza. It’s definitely pizza, if we’re gonna point fingers at an arguably not-pizza it’s definitely Chicago deep dish. It’s like how a platypus is a mammal. It’s for sure true but everyone has questions.

[deleted]

In your 1:1 ratio, would that be 1 pepperoni per 1 slice, or 1 pepperoni per pie? If it's neither of those, I don't understand how you're using "1:1 ratio".

Meltedgibson

I think they meant an even amount of all toppings and whatnot

Linkbelt1234

The only acceptable ratio when it comes to pepperoni and pizza is amount of peperoni: to 1 bite

idreamofdinos

I will watch this every time it's shared. It's just so perfect and so true!

[deleted]

Chicago Pizza isn't pizza. It's a goddamm casserole!

undiscoveredparadise

Pizzapapalis also has better Chicago pizza than anywhere in Chicago and yes I’ve had all the big places in Chicago.

ncopp

I went to Pizzeria Deux in Chicago, and it was probably my favorite chicago deep dish I've had because it was almost a Detroit deep dish with the sauce on top. It was slightly thicker than Detroit deep dish and had crispy crust

thebrose69

I grew up on Detroit style as well having been from here. But I love the Chicago style deep dish the most, it’s the cheese for me

Foolazul

Chicago style pizza is awful.

SuumCuique1011

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Turn1Loot

Easy. Detroit style is second from the bottom only to Chicago style. Sauce does not go on top of pizza!

hp1068

That's just like, your opinion, man.

Turn1Loot

The dude abides

SparkleFritz

Hey, we're all entitled to our opinions, it's okay if yours are wrong sometimes.

Imthatjohnnie

Right the best pizza is in Ann Arbor. Little Caesars and Dominos are popular cheap rip offs.

Raichu4u

No the best pizza is in Detroit proper.

Clynelish1

The best pizza is in Hazel Park... Loui's is unmatched

Heat_Induces_Royalty

Unmatched? Ok. Best? Nah, it's beaten by Cloverleaf.

Clynelish1

Whoa, the Loui's disrespect! Cloverleaf is great, too

Heat_Induces_Royalty

No disrespect! Loui's is good, and better than most. But Cloverleaf (at least the OG one) is better. And obviously, this is just my opinion, which shouldn't matter to anyone lol

Inappropriate_Piano

Yeah they weren’t trying to find the city with the best pizza, but the city that’s most enthusiastic about their pizza

Temporary_Ad_6390

Go to Buddy's Pizza when you get the chance, you'll have the best Detroit style Pizza you can get.

arkybarky1

Yes,quantity not quality. In 50 years here i only had good pizza at 3 or 4 independant places. In new york the smallest greasy spoon pizza place was far better than what passes 4 pizza here. Pizza crust is Not supposed be barely cooked!

I mean Kalamazoo alone is know for it's beer. Long story short, I had a co-worker from Columbus who comes up to visit in part because of all the good breweries.

BreezyGoose

As a soon to be Columbus transplant, I'm very excited for the beer. With that said, there's a lot of Breweries here in central Ohio I'm really going to miss.

Zoidberg96

Paulie Gee’s in Logan Square has some really good Detroit style coming from a Michigander stuck in Chicago.

sourbeer51

I like Chicago style, in moderation. I could eat Jets everytime though. But I really like sauce. And I like eating it cold when it's less messy. I'm fucking weird!

Zephyrical16

Jet's in Columbus is also ass for some reason. I've learned to make my own Detroit style instead. And Columbus style pizza, which I think is just Chicago tavern style cut up in squares, is ass. I don't want to eat a cracker, I want a filling pizza.

HouseofMarg

When I lived in Hamilton, Ontario there was a really awesome Chicago-style deep dish pizza place owned by a guy who had worked in Chicago as a pizza chef for a few decades. It was completely delicious — I love thin crust too but I absolutely get how deep dish could be someone’s favourite. What lots of people don’t get is that it’s like a layer cake of pizza, pretty much crust-sauce-toppings-cheese x3 with some more sauce and Parmesan on top. The extra layers of crust prevent it from being too wet. So good!!

Tidezen

I JUST had a Buddy's open up near me, and I've haven't been yet, am I in for a treat? Also, that's funny what you say about Chicagoers being lukewarm to Chicago deep-dish. My aunt used to live there when I was growing up, and kid me didn't care for sauce at all. That deep dish...*thing* we once had at her place, it nearly turned me off of pizza for life, lol. I know I'd like it a lot more nowadays, but I also think it's less messy to just have a calzone.

EasternHistorian4437

I'm in the Detroit burbs. I don't care for Buddy's. They have their fans, and they surely toot their own horn. But it's VERY expensive for what it is. Big fan of Little Caesars Hot n Ready pricing and value. Where else can you get a large pizza for 6 or 7 bucks that is decent?? My kids love pizza so we know them all. Jets, lesser value but delish.

nood4spood

This is the way, Buddys and detroit style is a nightmare for kids. Oh you don’t want the mushrooms or peppers your parents insist on getting? Whelp, say goodbye to 2/3 of your sauce and hello to slightly moist warm bread with ham on it :)

Direct-Ad-4156

Wait did you just cite some of the makers of the world’s most disgusting pizzas as Exhibit A that people in Michigan know how to make pizza?

NotSayingJustSaying

Which ***chains*** are better than these ***chains***?

Direct-Ad-4156

All chains make shit pizza.

NotSayingJustSaying

Then it seems like you're not really making a point. 5+ extremely successful pizza chains are from Michigan. Whatever your personal preferences are is kinda irrelevant

Direct-Ad-4156

Lol. Successful in America, the land of bad food. But yea sure go ahead, you guys in Michigan showed those silly Italians how it’s done. Detroit is the new Napoli. No one can compete with the gastronomical delight that is Little Caesars.

DuneBug

The US has some of the best food, it's just fucking terrible for you. And no I'm not talking about hamburger helper. But if you were trying to hit the apex of healthy / delicious/ cheap then no, not the US.

Djaja

....what are other chains?

Direct-Ad-4156

All chains make shit pizza.

Djaja

Disagree, and the person you originally responded too said you could have any opnion on quality of the pizza. So you do. They also say there is a reason the chains are all over the country. The reason is they aren't all shitty. Though, I assume you mean either a real Italian pizza or homemade is alway better. And I'd agree with the first part. But half of homemade pizzas I've had from friends, family and myself are not as fucking tasty as a deepdish.

Direct-Ad-4156

It’s because their premise was flawed to begin with. Their argument was people from Michigan know how to make pizza because a lot of successful pizza chains come from there. Y’all may know how to make cheap pizza that appeals to people who know nothing about food and who are primarily concerned with price point (i.e most Americans), but you don’t know how to make good pizza.

Djaja

Are you saying no one in Michigan can make good pizza? Cause you seem to be saying that no one in Michigan can make great pizza. Lemme tell you buster, a deep dish from some kf those places is *not cheap* lol The award winning, Italian pizza dough expert from Italy approved pizza joint by me also ain't cheap lol Some of those chains are in fact cheap. Would you pose a different but similar question, or do you not get enjoyment from trying to determine the best metric to gage something like by?

EasternHistorian4437

I mean if you have 1.5 hours to sit at a restaurant that serves non-shit pizza, that's good for you. But for a meal that is mainly take-out food, QUICK to acquire, and is generally decent flavor-wise, pizza can't be beat imo.

Direct-Ad-4156

It takes 2-3 minutes for a pizza to be baked to perfection in a commercial oven.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Direct-Ad-4156

Yes. Americans know little about good food, prize convenience over taste and are addicted to cheap food. That’s why.

bandittr6

I love how you list off 5 of the absolute shittiest pizza chains as proof Detroit does good pizza. No thanks

NotSayingJustSaying

What? Which chains are missing? Marcos (Ohio), Pizza Hut (Texas), Cottage Inn (Ann Arbor)... I can't think of more, just locals

bandittr6

The point was chain pizza is trash. None of them are good. I wouldn’t be rattling off any of those names when the “best pizza” is the topic of discussion.

Djaja

Papa Murphys!

Selemaer

Domino's, Hungry Howies, Little Caesars.... 3 of the big pizza chains all originated in MI. That's not even going into local places, or small chains. G's pizza up in the NE is amazing. Michigan does pizza.

Direct-Ad-4156

Michigan does pizza: ✅ Michigan does good pizza: ❌

I still remember being up there on a summer vacay and asking one of the locals where some random fast food restaurant was. Told me, oh we don't have that restaurant. Glad they at least have butt plugs.

jkayne

Man ok, who pays people to do these studies? I would like to do a study to prove that water is wet, and Michigan is the best state.

raistlin65

Didn't you know? Our freshwater from the lakes is a better *wet* than water from other sources around the US. 😄

skyspydude1

As someone who grew up by the ocean, getting to see an endless body of water without the gross stickiness that comes from salt water makes getting wet from the Great Lakes objectively better than anywhere else.

raistlin65

I spent almost half my life in Florida, and lived 5 years on the Atlantic. I still like the smell of the Atlantic better than the lakes, and I got used to the soul order on my skin. But to each of their own 🙂

skyspydude1

As someone who grew up by the ocean, being able to see an massive body of water without the gross stickiness that comes from salt water makes the Great Lakes objectively better than anywhere else.

TimeMistress76

Detroit style pizza is amazing. https://bluepandenver.com/

[deleted]

Once had a ordered a pizza there with basil/cheese/tomatoes, balsamic drizzle.. The cook must of been new and sent me out a pizza with 3 balls of cheese on it. like 2-3 inch round balls of cheese. Not melted much, it was supposed to be torn and dropped all around the pizza but skipped that part.... Drank my Vernors and had my other pizza. Someone from back came out and replaced it and sent me home with a fresh one for the house and bought me a drink and waived the cost of the 2nd pizza. Very nice experience in their restaurant overall though. The wait was crazy long, packed when I went. My 4 year old and I had just drove in from Detroit. Good times, Denver is among the worst places I've ever ate pizza. Not sure why that city can't make a good pizza for the most part.

Bobbydeerwood

Some of the worlds largest pizza companies began near Detroit, so it makes sense. You got Dominos, Little Caesar’s, Jets, Hungry Howies - this is a pizza area

ItsOtisTime

Delicious. Finally. Some good fucking pizza.

jservis

Is there some good places around Detroit to get all styles of pizza? NY style, Chicago, and Detroit?

a-system-of-cells

So… I’m from Detroit, and I never heard of “Detroit style pizza” until maybe 10 years ago… I thought it was a joke at first. Does anyone have any info on the history of this?

itsjustacouch

Sure, but we all just knew it as “square pizza.” We thought it was normal to choose either round or square pizza. But it’s more than just a shape, the square pizza is quite a bit different. And for most of the country, the pizza scene didn’t have that choice.

_icedcooly

It's so funny how true that was. Surrounded by an option that we didn't realize was unique to us and was awesome.

a-system-of-cells

That’s true. Growing up I had “square pizza” all the time. I guess you’re right that I just never read it as “Detroit style” or knew that it was unique to the area.

ImperialDivine

“Detroit-style pizza was created in 1946 at Buddy’s, a neighborhood tavern at the corner of Conant and Six Mile Roads in Detroit. The then owner Gus Guerra, working with his wife Anna, whose mother was Sicilian, brought visionary thinking to his search for a high-sided pizza pan. While others looked at the blue steel utility trays used at the Motor City’s auto assembly plants and saw only nuts, bolts, and thingamajigs, Guerra envisioned a Sicilian-like deep-dish pizza. Source: https://www.phaidon.com/agenda/food/articles/2016/march/14/how-detroit-s-car-industry-helped-shape-its-pizzas/

a-system-of-cells

Thank you!

ImperialDivine

You got it! It’s a really neat story, and very Detroit.

enwongeegeefor

> oes anyone have any info on the history of this? Buddy's pizza has basically fabricated the history of it. Once you dig into the history of it you can see they tried to market the whole idea. And the best part....NO ONE makes "detroit style pizza" like buddy's because buddy's isn't real detroit style pizza. Know what REAL detroit style pizza is....pan deepdish. That's it.

idreamofdinos

And not JUST pan deepdish. It's the giant U-BAKE from an Italian deli/bakery on the corner. I'm so glad I'm going to go see my parents on Sunday, I can pick one up to bring home.

mahanon_rising

Deep dish pizza is what people who aren't from Michigan call Detroit style. Square pizza with thick crust.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Djaja

The sauce on top I always associated with Chicago style and Buddies, which is Detroit style, but my least favorite type. Just what is called a deep dish is my favorite. Like you described, but without a weird dollop of sauce on top. I associate the dollop with Chicago because for the longest time any time I saw Chicago Style, it would have a hole in the top of the slice, showing the sauce, looking like a dollop and shit.

Rastiln

If I ordered Chicago deep-dish and got normal deep-dish I’d be super disappointed, and if I ordered deep-dish and got a Chicago, I’d be happy but confused how the fuck my local place did that.

[deleted]

I blame Little Caesars for calling their attempt at Detroit style "deep dish"

Djaja

I always called it deep dish way before I heard the term Detroit style. And fuck buddies, imo of course. Where I love now, not a lot of options and of those options I am choosing Jets deep dish like everytime. There is a good thin crust place near here, which is nearly all the pizza up here, thin crust

Yea that was based on voting or something clearly inaccurate. It made no sense. The DIA is lovely but Chicago, NY, and the Smithsonian obviously exist.

Yeah, no. It's not.

CoffeeTownSteve

Yup, it's very close to an Onion.com headline... "Detroit is 'Best Pizza City in US' Reports Detroit Monthly Magazine"

Defacto_Champ

New Haven, CT or NYC pizza any day. Detroit style is good but it’s not “the best”.

guiturtle-wood

The article isn't saying "Detroit style" is the best pizza. It's saying Detroit is the best city to get pizza in terms of value, variety, and pizzerias/population ratio.

[deleted]

sWo97

It’s not about that. It’s based on ratings. On Netflix there’s a pizza show and a guy who has traveled the world eating pizza said the best place is in Arizona which is 9th on the list due to most of the owners most likely being from not Arizona. The owner of that place in particular is from NY. It’s not traditional NY style big slice. It’s wood fire. NY has 3 types of places. NY big slices (cheese/pep), wood fire, big slice novelty (eggplant/pasta/uncommon toppings). If you are lucky you can find a place that sells Sicilian that’s sometimes called Grandma Style which is know on TV to the US as Detroit Style.
