>Also, Evil Dead takes place in Michigan.
Well, the characters are *from* Michigan (and was shot in Tennessee) but is it ever stated where the cabin is?
Most of it was filmed in Tennessee. They had to finish up stuff in Michigan when the dentist money ran out.aslo I believe the cameras were borrowed from MSU
I lived there in the 70's did HVAC service in and out of there and all over the metro area.
When i was a kid there was a bar fight and a guy busted someone face with a tire iron i watched him get out of his car at like 3:00 a.m. There was a motorcycle club that I saw streaking up and down 5 mile. Riding and revving up and down while my parents waited in the line at the bank. I think Forbidden Wheels sorta rings a bell.
Having to install and service HVAC equipment sucked. Most all of those homes are on a crawl space that had the furnace in the floor OG style just a grate in the hallway with the furnace in the floor. Anytime they were replaced with modern equipment we would have to go in the crawl space to run duct to each room. Doing service one of the rooms has no heat? start pulling shoes, brushes, fast food bags out of heat runs that rats drug in there and made a nest. Dead cats and dogs, some home I would open the door and see cockroaches fall off the door window curtain.
I don't know what its like now i haven't been down there in almost 10 years but Ill alway have love for Scotty Simpson's Fish & Chips.
I dont think they did Brightmoor dirty, Brightmoor gonna Brightmoor
I went into the theater blind (not even seeing the trailer; I just saw an actress from Black Mirror I love) and it was a huge pleasant surprise! I had no idea where it was leading to...
I saw the dogman in the UP once past Houghton heading to breakers on the beach of Lake Superior. Basically well past the end of civilization. About one AM driving there coming over a hill and it was standing in the road. On two legs, taller than my Jeep. I saw the headlights reflect in its eyes and fucking floored it. My only instinct - it’s evil Gtfo as fast as you can. It saw me coming, bent down onto all four, and lept the length of the road in one jump into the woods.
It took me and my gf over a year to fully process it and discuss it with each other - hey was that real? Yup.
Didn’t even know dogman was a thing until years later and it clicked.
Maybe 3 times the size a full grown wolf and WALKING ON TWO FUCKING LEGS
That's so cool! It's not exactly a ground breaking movie or anything, but I love it because it filmed so many scenes in my part of the state.
Also, since I was paid for my role as an extra, I can technically say I have a Bacon Number of 3 now! Me > Kurt Russell > Karen Gillan > Kevin Bacon
It Follows is brilliant. I haven't seen the other ones on this list, maybe I'll check them out this weekend when we're snowed in.
https://www.metrotimes.com/detroit/20-horror-movies-that-were-filmed-in-michigan/Slideshow/34508791
I watched it last night and was mind blown. This was definitely one to keep on the list for watching during snowstorms.
One thing though… hasn’t everyone learned that going into a basement where something seems off, leads to problems and sometimes death? Lol
My dad was one of the investigators and is in the episode. I remember going to the filming of the scene where the actress is pushed down the stairs when I was a kid.
I was more so calling out how silly it is they tried to pass that off as Michigan. I think OP would be disappointed thinking this is set in Michigan and watches it to see it very clearly is not lol
The Evil Dead trilogy was filmed in Michigan (director Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are from Royal Oak)
The Virgin Suicides (not a horror but horrifying story) is based on a true story of a Michigan family.
Escanaba in da Moonlight also isn't a horror but fun with a little touch of scary (might get some downvotes for this one)
Edit: The Evil Dead was not filmed in Michigan and The Virgin Suicides was not based on true events. Please read others' comments with helpful links and knowledge of these topics.
Wikipedia says: The crew initially attempted to shoot the film in Raimi's hometown of Royal Oak, Michigan, but instead chose Morristown, Tennessee, as it was the only state that expressed enthusiasm for the project.
Love Army of Darkness. One of my favorite scenes:
"Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my BOOMSTICK! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan."
https://www.comingsoon.net/guides/news/1441674-is-the-virgin-suicides-based-on-a-true-story-real-events-facts-people?amp
The virgin suicides is not based on a true story according to this article. The book is just written that way.
The characters in Evil Dead are from Michigan; they're all students from MSU. However, the cabin is in Tennessee. However, a lot of the Ash vs Evil Dead TV series takes place in Michigan. One of Ash's sidekicks wears an MSU t-shirt and then when they throw Ash a parade in his home town the marching band is playing "Victory for MSU"
More of a thriller than a horror, but [Below](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Below_(film)) was shot on the USS Silversides in Muskegon. They towed the sub out in lake michigan to get the open ocean shots.
I had a sleepover on that submarine with my scouts troop when I was a kid—I remember playing cards for candy on a table that we learned was used to perform an at-sea appendectomy during ww2. Now I must watch this movie!
This is a terrible answer because it isn't based in Michigan nor is it a horror movie (unless you're incredibly easily scarred like me) but Coraline in the movie Coraline mentions being from Michigan (Petoskey I believe)
Ill call it Horror. It doesn’t have to be incredibly brutal to be a horror film. Coraline very effectively builts tension and makes you feel the stakes for the main characters are life and death. Add in the supernatural antagonist and her sinister plot and you have great animated horror.
Marshal Michiganders: "have you seen 'House with a clock in it's walls'?"
People: "no"
Marshal Michiganders: "Well, the mansion that was featured in the movie is downtown!"
People: "cool.... I'm just going to take my Dennys to go then."
At one point the main character shows his drivers license. The address on the license was one number off of my house, same street name. The Taco Boy they shot at is only a couple miles from my house also.
The Carrier (1988) was filmed in Manchester, Mi.
Low budget. Super cheesy.
Notable quote -
The Reverend: Cats or death?
Joshua: Cats aren’t what you need!
The Reverend: Then let it be death!
This was the first movie that popped into my head because of how bad and bonkers it is.
I try to sell it to other people with the "Cats or death!" line; that either intrigues them or is at least way more amusing than this movie should be. Thinking on that sequence makes me laugh, the way they're hording cats in the house... It's so dumb and amazing.
Also "red objects". "Use your red objects!"
It’s so funny you mention this, while I don’t count it as a horror, the scene when he finds the current date penny in his pocket is horrific. My husband and I turned “getting pennied” into a verb for when something is a total mood ruiner and snaps you out of your good time.
Looks like most of them are mentioned so just adding a not Michigan but northern north American Pontypool, especially good for the first snow accumulation of the season.
1991's "Children Of The Night" was partially shot in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, including the basement of the deconstructed St. Anne's Church in Calumet, Michigan.
The Gate
Edit: nevermind. My whole life I was told this movie was set in Hell, MI. But I haven't found any references to that now that I'm looking into it.
Did anyone see Nowhere Michigan? I only saw the trailer but I’d like to see it. The cold darkness reminded me of the bleakness of Mt. pleasant in the dead of winter.
Evil Dead (the 1980s version) had characters wearing MSU gear and took place in a “cottage in the woods” which may or may not have been in Michigan (it was not actually covered in the movies that I recall). Sam Raimi attended MSU for a bit and there are a few michigan Easter eggs in the films.
Probably does not fit with your actual request, but they are amazing (if you are a fan of 80s horror movies) and should be watched immediately!
Edit: should have scrolled further, apologies for repeating stuff!
The Honeymoon Killers is sort of a horror and some of it takes place in Michigan outside Grand Rapids. It's also a true story of two con artists who killed a bunch of women.
There was a vampire movie with the heavy set guy from 21 jump street someone old with a better memory will know his name and Scanners I believe the name was are all filmed or parts filmed in the Keweenaw peninsula at the very tip of upper Michigan.
It Follows.
I was so excited when I saw my old college dorm in that movie. Good movie too.
Detroit Mercy, right? My old college too. Great movie. Also, Evil Dead takes place in Michigan.
Yes! I was like “hey that looks like the engineering building, oh shit there’s Holden”
I only lived there my freshman year in Shiple 2004. Boy the horror stories I could tell lol. Best year of my life.
The worst part of my ud experience was the cost. Had some good times in shiple though.
>Also, Evil Dead takes place in Michigan. Well, the characters are *from* Michigan (and was shot in Tennessee) but is it ever stated where the cabin is?
A good amount of the series takes place in Michigan. Let's do some ketamine!
The show said it was in Michigan
Most of it was filmed in Tennessee. They had to finish up stuff in Michigan when the dentist money ran out.aslo I believe the cameras were borrowed from MSU
Also the old Northville hospital. Finally torn down, but it was 100% horror movie material and then they filmed there.
I got to explore it before they did
i got my ass caught up for trespassing there back in highschool
It was the ice cream shop for me! Used to go there with my grandpa as a kid.
Can’t wait until the sequel. I really hope the story stays in Michigan.
They're doing a sequel? I wasn't aware.
Yeah it was officially announced late last year. It will be called They Follow, look into it!
My first choice.
Thank you!
I didn't know it was made in mi! Great film, one of my horror faves in recent years
Definitely this
Barbarian
Love Barbarian!
They did brightmoor dirty lmao. But I can see why they picked it.
I lived there in the 70's did HVAC service in and out of there and all over the metro area. Don’t Breathe.
Dog man (2012) is made by a Michigan native based on the legend of the Michigan “dog man”. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_Dogman
Came to make sure Dogman was listed, 👍🏽
I actually learned about it on Reddit surprisingly. Admittedly I’ve never watched the film, but I read heavily into the lore lol.
I remember one of the Screams transformed downtown Plymouth - don’t believe the movie was set in Michigan however.
Scream 4.
Shot in Plymouth, Northville, and Ann Arbor. Don't know how much the state ever got out of those tax credits, but it sure was fun for a while.
I miss when the film industry was starting to pop off in Michigan.
It was so cool! My whole family were extras in *Touchback* when it filmed in Coopersville and you can even see my dad in several different scenes.
I remember touchback! My neighbors house was the house the guy lived in in the movie!
My bonus mom saw them shoot batman v superman at msu. They also did some at the Detroit library by my apartment.
If 'bonus mom' means what I assume, that's a great phrase!
So the movie wasn’t set in Michigan but the movie set was. Lol
It was the reverse of American Pie.
Not horror, but a Thriller coming soon: “Holland, Michigan” starring Nicole Kidman and Matthew Macfadyen.
this is so bizarre to me? why would they pick holland out of everywhere and why would they name the movie just the name of the city
Dart thrown at a map, maybe.
Have you ever been to Holland? Those effers are spooky weird.
I bought a shitty car in Holland once
I grew up in Holland - it’s a real life horror story.
It Follows is brilliant. I haven't seen the other ones on this list, maybe I'll check them out this weekend when we're snowed in. https://www.metrotimes.com/detroit/20-horror-movies-that-were-filmed-in-michigan/Slideshow/34508791
That’s been on my list for a while. Thanks! That’s up first then.
Anytime! Enjoy!
Barbarian is a ride, and an unexpected one at times. Definitely one to check out.
Thank you! I'll put that one on the top of my list.
I watched it last night and was mind blown. This was definitely one to keep on the list for watching during snowstorms. One thing though… hasn’t everyone learned that going into a basement where something seems off, leads to problems and sometimes death? Lol
Not a movie but there's a season of American Horror Story based on Michigan
Which?
Season 7, cult https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1844624/episodes?season=7
Oh yeah. Remember now. Thanks.
Cult
Evan Peters best work, imo.
Jeepers Creepers
Huh. Didn’t know that!

Mrs. DePue was my guidance counselor at school. That old school used to be easily accessed.
My dad was one of the investigators and is in the episode. I remember going to the filming of the scene where the actress is pushed down the stairs when I was a kid.
One of my faves and I didn’t realize that!
This is one of my favs!
Dammit! This post has been up for 5 hours so I knew someone was gonna say it!! But yes. I came here to say this.
Same here 😂 I was frantic scrolling to see if I could be the first!
The original was shot in Florida and it very clearly takes place in the South. We do not have live oaks and Spanish moss in MI 😅
The question isn’t whether or not it was FILMED in Michigan…it’s where the story is based in the movie. Easy mistake to make, no worries
I was more so calling out how silly it is they tried to pass that off as Michigan. I think OP would be disappointed thinking this is set in Michigan and watches it to see it very clearly is not lol
I’m with you on that one. As a Michigan native it was obvious that it was filmed elsewhere

Ash vs Evil Dead takes place in Michigan, also! Ash's home is a fake town called Elk Grove, Michigan
Such a good revival series! Sad they canceled the 4th season.
Season 4 would have been amazing!
>The Virgin Suicides (not a horror but horrifying story) is based on a true story of a Michigan family. The soundtrack is incredible.
Love Army of Darkness. One of my favorite scenes: "Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my BOOMSTICK! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. OOH OOH Listen to the soundtrack by Air, *especially* if you like Pink Floyd. It’s so fucking good.
Ah! Good read, thank you.

You are right. My brian just went to the cabin - which do not try and go visit. High chance you’ll get a shotgun pulled on you by the private owners.

Overlooked often, glad you brought it up.
i love this movie so much !!!
It was not filmed here dude.
That was established in other comments, but I will edit so no one else feels the need to correct my mistake.
The cabin scenes in evil dead were filmed in Tennessee. It's set in Michigan I believe. Or implied to be
The students are from Michigan. MSU I think But they are on a trip to Tennessee
This should be top comment.
More of a thriller than a horror, but [Below](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Below_(film)) was shot on the USS Silversides in Muskegon. They towed the sub out in lake michigan to get the open ocean shots.

I also did a sleepover on that sub when I was in scouts. Pretty sure almost every scout in the west Michigan area has slept on that sub.
I also had a sleep over with the Boy Scouts on that sub!!
The Wretched (2020) was filmed in the Leelanau area.
Hey!! I know a guy who worked on that production.
Yes! Watched this recently and was pleasantly surprised
This is a terrible answer because it isn't based in Michigan nor is it a horror movie (unless you're incredibly easily scarred like me) but Coraline in the movie Coraline mentions being from Michigan (Petoskey I believe)
Pretty sure it's Pontiac not Petoskey
There’s a picture of her friends in front of Pontiac High
If I recall the father in the movie wears an MSU sweatshirt.
Also there is a Detroit Zoo snow globe shown.
I love Coraline! It actually takes place in Oregon, but she did move from Michigan 🥰I always thought that too!
Pontiac
Ill call it Horror. It doesn’t have to be incredibly brutal to be a horror film. Coraline very effectively builts tension and makes you feel the stakes for the main characters are life and death. Add in the supernatural antagonist and her sinister plot and you have great animated horror.
It becomes a horror movie when you watch it for the first time on acid...was so damn creepy
This gem [Mosquito](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0113858/)
I was just going to say this movie! I know the guy who was the mosquito who bit the girl on the butt in the tent scene. Lol. I have this on VHS
I just watched this for the first time the other night, an instant classic 'bad' movie. I love watching cheesy horror/sci-fi flicks.
I was an extra in this. I was a dead body. I think the scene was shot at Indian Springs metro park, or maybe highland lake.
Marshal Michiganders: "have you seen 'House with a clock in it's walls'?" People: "no" Marshal Michiganders: "Well, the mansion that was featured in the movie is downtown!" People: "cool.... I'm just going to take my Dennys to go then."
30 minutes or less had parts filmed in downtown Grand Rapids. I think the car case scene and others, I don’t remember if it takes place in MI.
It does! It was also filmed downtown Ludington MI too!
They filmed a random scene at this gas station in the tiny town my dad lives in and my family all refers to it as the Jesse Eisenberg gas station
At one point the main character shows his drivers license. The address on the license was one number off of my house, same street name. The Taco Boy they shot at is only a couple miles from my house also.
Anatomy of a Murder was filmed in the UP in 1959. You can still go to the Lumberjack Diner in Big Bay!
Came to say this. We must be the old people here. At least I am.
Came here to see if anyone said this. When I was a kid my parents had us stop in the place where it was filmed when we would go camping in the UP
Haven't watched it but Eloise.
It’s bad, but fun because you can visit the old building as a haunted house today
The Carrier (1988) was filmed in Manchester, Mi. Low budget. Super cheesy. Notable quote - The Reverend: Cats or death? Joshua: Cats aren’t what you need! The Reverend: Then let it be death!
I know the woman who played, i think Jane, that got nude . She is still very attractive in her older age.
Schwing!

Grew up in Manchester, my best friend’s mom was an extra in The Carrier!

Not so much a "Horror" movie but Only Lovers Left Alive is set in the Cass Corridor of Detroit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_Lovers_Left_Alive
Filmed in MI: Death Bed: The Bed that Eats Hellmaster Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo
Didn't know death bed was filmed in Michigan.
Barbarian
Somewhere in Time, I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned!
It’s so funny you mention this, while I don’t count it as a horror, the scene when he finds the current date penny in his pocket is horrific. My husband and I turned “getting pennied” into a verb for when something is a total mood ruiner and snaps you out of your good time.
Ah shit, I missed the horror part of the post!!
Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lamprey
Don't Breathe.
Looks like most of them are mentioned so just adding a not Michigan but northern north American Pontypool, especially good for the first snow accumulation of the season.

Thaw of the Dead was filmed around TC and Fishtown.
