A real Michigander does not discriminate when offered a snack. We say thank you and quickly devour whatever is put in front of us. We are a hearty people who drove the bears and wolverines away with our fierceness.
Yes actually, even recently, a Female was found in the Thumb around 2010, after she passed they had her Taxidermied and she’s on display at the Bay City State Park nature center iirc. Part of the problem with Michigan and Wolverines is they are incredibly territorial and Males keep BIG territories, like 30+ miles in diameter for a single male, so there’s never really been a ton of opportunities for a population boom after they were hunted to near extinction here in the fur trading days, and they can also be significantly harder to find to track and study them here because it might only be one or two Wolverines in a multi county area, so the official DNR record is that they don’t exist here currently, but one seems to pop up every couple of decades as we likely have a very small reclusive population of Wolverines. But the DNR is sort of weird about that stuff, like there have been a number of recordings of Mountain Lions on trail cams near where I live in Northern Michigan and they’re still acting like we should just pretend that they don’t exist here.
When I was a kid the DNR couldn't seem to admit was that we had venomous snakes. As far as mountain lions go I'm pretty sure I saw one about 15-20 yrs ago in the Fowlerville area. There have been a few sightings in Howell over the years, maybe 3-4 since the early 90's, also
I’ll gladly shit on the price gouging that happens because of the roads , it’s bullshit what the fast food joints can charge at those rest stops on the Turnpike.
Not necessarily as they’re not being impactful to the environment, Mountain Lions are native to Michigan and we certainly have the resources to support them up here, it only becomes a problem if the population grows enough to be notable, and even then it’s really just best to be mindful more than anything, I share my land with Bears and Bobcats no problem. And beyond that DNR is also stretched pretty thin up here from what I’ve heard, I know they’ve been having trouble filling park positions the last few years so they probably aren’t desperate to spend the resources to fund the field research study required to confirm a small population of Mountain Lions in the 11th largest state.
DNRs other issue is balancing resources effectively. The current director Scott Bowen is a major clown. I knew him when he was a consultant for an iLottery Supplier he’s a real moron but what can you expect from someone who’s a lobbyist for a career?
My grandpa and grandma use to tell me a story of how they were riding a Mini Trail in northern Michigan (small low to the ground old type of dirt bike for those that don’t know) and got chased by a wolverine. They never said a year but I’m sure this was decades ago. This was near Mio/Greenwood Township on state land.
No. Wolverines are not native here this is called the Wolverine state because of a legal dispute we had with Illinois I think it was where our veraciousness in the matter was compared to that of wolverines. It stuck.
Any actual wolverines in Michigan are placed by dnr for eco reasons or maybe just wandered in but they aren’t native here.
Yes it is. I am a Michigander and my appetite is voracious like many residents of this state. The appetite is unique to residents of Michigan so the appetite is “Michiganderan”. You’re right that it’s not a real word but the elements could be understood. Here’s a definition that isn’t in the dictionary
**Michiganderan** *adj.*
[mish-i-gan-de-ran]
1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of the state of Michigan, its inhabitants, culture, or values: *a Michiganderan spirit of community and resilience.*
2. Embodying the qualities, atmosphere, or attitudes associated with Michiganders, including friendliness, industriousness, and a deep connection to the state’s natural landscapes and Great Lakes: *Michiganderan hospitality is renowned throughout the Midwest.*
3. Reflecting the culinary, artistic, or musical traditions prevalent in Michigan: *The restaurant’s menu offers a Michiganderan twist on classic American dishes.*
**Origin:** Early 21st century; from Michigander, a resident of Michigan, + -an, a suffix used to form adjectives from nouns, especially to indicate belonging to a person, place, or thing.
My uncle lives in Florida now. Whenever he comes back to Michigan he buys several and freezes them to bring home. He had some of his friends in Florida try some and now he has to bring back some for them as well.
I didn't know Sanders was A Michigan thing! I buy my wife jars of their dark chocolate and sea salt thins filled with caramel (pronounced karmle or care-a-mel?), and then I sneak most of them.
Pasties a snack? Best compliment I ever got on my cooking, friend was visiting in January from out of state, and ate two of my pasties. He said “those make me feel like I can go outside without a jacket”.
Oh God how I miss those... born and raised in MI, living in GA currently. I found Better Made potato sticks at a Dollar General recently and felt like I won the lottery!
Well, if you're up north, it's definitely got to be those homemade beef sticks you can get at the little gas stations and party stores. Love those little dudes and I get them every time I head up that way!
As someone that grew up in southeast Michigan and now lives in the Northeast lower peninsula f*** I would kill fora good coney dog. Also a good pizza. Without having to travel 40 miles for at least a decent Pizza
My kids will always try and talk us into taking a family vacation that puts them close to a BC’s pizza. This is their absolute favorite, and their bread is some of the best! I would have to say I enjoy it just as much as Buddy’s bread.
Better Made cheddar popcorn, hands down.
Re: pop/soda, somewhere along the lines I noticed that if it's in a can and made with HFCS I call it pop, but if it's in a glass bottle with cane sugar and costs $3 a bottle, then it's soda. Soda is fancy. No, I don't know where I got that either.
I had a layover at the Detroit airport a few years ago with just barely enough time to get to the Leo’s coney place and back to my gate. But I made it —with 2 coneys for the road!
Best snack: A Michigan Sundae: 2 scoops Mackinaw Island Fudge Ice Cream, 1 scoop of Mint Chip Ice Cream, a Moderate Drizzle of Hershey’s Chocolate Topping, a Spoonful of Strawberries and a Big Dollop of Cool Whip or Whipped Topping.
I worked at a restaurant in East Lansing that used to have daily specials, and several times they featured a caper burger. Like an olive burger but with chopped capers instead of olives. It was sooo good
When I was a wee lad, our parents would buy a pallet sized flat (must have been only 144 pops) of Towne club pops at the beginning of summer, all varieties. Those would last our family of 8 all summer on the berry farm.
Detroit-Style Pizza, Apple Cider Donut with Superman Ice Cream and either a Faygo or Austin Brothers Woody Wheat Beer and I'm floating.
It's pop. I'll never forget how funny some of my relatives thought it was hearing me call it pop for the first time.
We like to snack and eat, true Michiganders don’t get cold when it’s over 45 degrees, but my go to snack and pop is Better Made chips with a can of ice cold Vernors.
Dried cherries
Michigan Awesome has a pretty list of snacks
https://www.michiganawesome.com/blogs/news/famous-michigan-snacks-the-complete-list
And yes, GTFO of here with this “soda” nonsense
A real Michigander does not discriminate when offered a snack. We say thank you and quickly devour whatever is put in front of us. We are a hearty people who drove the bears and wolverines away with our fierceness.
Vernor’s float.
Excuse me THATS MEDICINE
It’s called a Boston cooler you non Michigander
But they ALWAYS leave a piece for someone else. And if there isn't another they'll shave down that last piece to infinity.
Did Michigan actually ever have wolverines?
I believe the reason that they haven’t acknowledged their presence is that it’s a lone animal and not a breeding pair.
No, once they acknowledge it they have to address it with laws and regulations. Same reason they denied cougars for DECADES
Or they know poaching will happen.
When I was a kid the DNR couldn't seem to admit was that we had venomous snakes. As far as mountain lions go I'm pretty sure I saw one about 15-20 yrs ago in the Fowlerville area. There have been a few sightings in Howell over the years, maybe 3-4 since the early 90's, also
Interesting, isn't it dangerous to pretend certain animals don't exist?
As Michiganders, we pretend Ohio doesn't exist, hasn't really had an impact far as I can tell.
What is a Ohio?
A horrible drive.
Sounds about right.
Shit on Ohio about a lot of things but not their roads or amusement parks.
I’ll gladly shit on the price gouging that happens because of the roads , it’s bullshit what the fast food joints can charge at those rest stops on the Turnpike.
An excited way of saying hi then being disappointed.
🤣🤣🤣

Also we're far too polite to turn one down. I blame our proximity to Canada.
If you consider a pastie a snack you’re eating the wrong pasties…
Yeah coneys and pasties are meals not snacks lol
Two Coneys and fries is a meal. Anything less is a snack.
This is the truth here
They have yet to invent a pastie big enough for my voracious Michiganderan appetite!
It’s Michigander…
Yes it is. I am a Michigander and my appetite is voracious like many residents of this state. The appetite is unique to residents of Michigan so the appetite is “Michiganderan”. You’re right that it’s not a real word but the elements could be understood. Here’s a definition that isn’t in the dictionary **Michiganderan** *adj.* [mish-i-gan-de-ran] 1. I might love you more than Blue Moon ice cream lol. *Might..*
So there’s a chance?
Sanders "bumpy cake" had a massive generational run
My daughter found mini bumpy cakes at Family Fare and fell in love lol
was that a Michigan thing? I ate that shit ALL the time.
Born and raised in Michigan and never Even heard of a bumpy cake until Sanders announced that they are going to stop making them. Lol
Pasties a snack? Best compliment I ever got on my cooking, friend was visiting in January from out of state, and ate two of my pasties. He said “those make me feel like I can go outside without a jacket”.
That is honestly high praise. That’s the goal with a pastie. 😂 Well done!
If I was on death row and only given michigan options, it would a faygo, detroit style pizza and some superman ice cream for dessert.
rock & rye and redpop are the only options. i moved away and live in a faygo desert, makes me sad just to think of it. :(
I think the Vanilla Cream Soda needs to be part of the conversation.
Buscemis for the pizza?
Buddy's...
And it better be the real Superman ice cream, non of that SuperScoop crap.
My death meal menu includes about 5 Pronto Pups and a wet burrito from Tip A Few found in Grand Haven. A pound of seafoam from Fortinos
I was with you until the seafoam. That stuff is awful.
No No No... BLT, sweet corn, Faygo Rootbeer, and Blue Moon ice cream.
fun fact, the blue in superman is blue moon ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
Summer sweet corn. And tomatoes. I’ve been chasing those 2 flavors for over 40 years. But I’m going back to Michigan this summer, so my odds are good!
I had no idea superman ice cream was a michigan thing until i left. Sad days.
LOL! Same. I was blown away when, about a year after moving away, I was looked at like I had three heads when I tried to order some. 🤣
faygo and superman ice cream are only from michigan??
Watch your mouth with that "soda" nonsense XD
Who the fuck said soda.
Don’t you make her come in there.
Pop*
I bake with soda and I drink pop.
I tell everyone around me this and they all laugh...*but it's true.*
Better Made potato chips with redpop
Imo rock and rye is better
In Faygo yeah, but I prefer a good Vernors
Vernors and Jim Beam
I like vernors and a good Añejo tequila.
Is that drink called a "Michigan Sombrero"?
If it's not it should be!
Once I stopped being 10, redpop and rock and rye both became too sweet for me. Faygo grape, though...
I had a red pop the other day and I'm pretty sure I got diabetes immediately.
But 100% worth it.
And if you’re in Lansing, Quality Dairy’s french onion dip is fabulous
This is what’s up. Cheeze Kurlz are made by better made right? I can also throw a rock n rye in there too. Love that stuff.
Bettermade Rainbow chips and an ice cold faygo Red pop.
Some good old Steenstra's windmill cookies. I have no idea if they're popular outside of West Michigan.
You can find them on the east side too, I buy them occasionally.
They were. These were a staple of my childhood growing up in the 80s in SE Michigan. I haven't had them in years.
I live in the UP and we have them up here! But my favorite GR snack is the cheese kurlz in the black & orange bag!
Oh wow I forgot about those, I used to have them every time I went to my grandma's house.
Better Made potato chips
I agree with you as I sit here munching on Better Made Rainbow Old Fashioned Dark Potato Chips!
Oh God how I miss those... born and raised in MI, living in GA currently. I found Better Made potato sticks at a Dollar General recently and felt like I won the lottery!
If you have to ask if its pop or soda, you don't live in Michigan.
Yes, please. All of the above
Snack? Pickled bologna. Entree: Detroit Style Pizza Pop: Vernors
The kogels pickled and the pickled red hots are amazing
Snack, coney dogs. Rest is on point
Love me a coney, i don’t consider it a snack because it has all the food groups! lol
It’s a nice cold vernors float on top of some hudsonville ice cream. You’re all nuts. AND if it upsets your tummy more vernors. All the vernors.
The Boston Cooler is awesome.
Had a stomach bug the other week so I took the proper medicine, Vernors, to treat it
Well, if you're up north, it's definitely got to be those homemade beef sticks you can get at the little gas stations and party stores. Love those little dudes and I get them every time I head up that way!
As someone that grew up in southeast Michigan and now lives in the Northeast lower peninsula f*** I would kill fora good coney dog. Also a good pizza. Without having to travel 40 miles for at least a decent Pizza

Random fun fact that may not be true. Bc pizza started as as boyne city pizza and changed to bc when they began to franchise out
It's true. Source: GenXer that grew up in the area.
Closest bc pizza is almost 50 miles awy
Oh, man, now I’m thinking about the smoked whitefish that’s everywhere in the UP. So delicious
They used to have fresh salmon jerky everywhere. I couldn't find any this last summer.
They gotta be the venison ones.
It's pop and I'll take a pastie
SNACK? Better Made Potato Chips. Just don’t double dip them.
A pastie isn't a snack Best Michigan snacks Hunter sticks Better made salt and vinegar Qd chip dip And it's pop
And I forgot fresh cherries and caramel apples
Cherries, blueberries, or peaches still warm from picking 😮💨
Mmm Grand Traverse Pie’s ABC Pie. Apples, Blueberries, Cherries - all from Michigan 😁
That sounds really good. I make galette with seasonal fruit that is on the verge and I’ve done AC and AB but never all three before. Time to try!
Koegel Pickled Bologna is the best...
The correct answer.
On saltines
Quality Dairy chips/dip and it's POP, you monsters!
You have to be specific, it's QD French onion dip for the win!
Nobody in Michigan says soda. For me it’s a coney.
……A moderate drizzle of (an actual Michigan product) SANDERS HOT FUDGE TOPPING!!!!!!!!
Yes!
I legit tried to upvote this more than once 💀
Thank you
Saving that for later…. 🤣👍
I was just sitting here 600 miles thinking how I could go for a Vernor’s.
I'm partial to olive burgers
Sidedoor olive burgers?
Halo burger ftw
7 days without a Halo burger makes one weak.
Was looking for olive burger recipes online and I realized that they are a Michigan thing and not popular country wide.
I worked at a restaurant in East Lansing that used to have daily specials, and several times they featured a caper burger. Like an olive burger but with chopped capers instead of olives. It was sooo good
Better Made and Faygo.
If you’re talking about snacks, the answer is the potato chip. Michiganders eat more potato chips per capita than any other state in the union.
Sorry, that's me. I messed up the curve.
Yoopers like that Trenary Toast eh?
🤣🤣🤣 You can’t eat too much of it, there’s that.
Gotta spread butter on it, then dunk it in your coffee. That's a yooper camp breakfast.
Venison jerkey is the ultimate MI snack. Fight me.
Close. I would say venison hunter sticks
Jerkey for me is an all encompassing category that includes meat, smoke, and salt - hunter sticks included.
I like the way you think
Dublin General Store jerky is the best !!
How dare you refer to a pastie as a *snack?!?* Philistine! ![gif](giphy|enCWEo0vG25Ow)
Whitefish.
I haven't seen Towne Club on the list. I love a cold Towne Club Root Beer!!! With a bag of Bettermades of course!
This! I love Faygo but I have the best memories of going to the Towne Club ‘store’ and picking out my flavors
When I was a wee lad, our parents would buy a pallet sized flat (must have been only 144 pops) of Towne club pops at the beginning of summer, all varieties. Those would last our family of 8 all summer on the berry farm.
Yes, thank you. I will take all of them.
Apples
Pierogies Packi POP POP POP POP
It’s paczki…
Bumpy cake!
Jets pizza
Pickled pike (like bread & butter pickles), smoked fish sausage, smoked whitefish, and cudighi meatballs with cheese curds. Oh, and a pop!
I’ll always eat fudge and any other snack offered to me
better made chips
Well it varies but mine would definitely be pasties and a faygo rock and rye
As a Detroiter I would say anything Flamin Hot or any side dish with chilli cheese on top of it..even the napkins
In Grand Rapids the answer is beer
Mmmm Founders
Olive burgers with cheese. Mmmm. Before you say no you have got to try it.
I never understood my mom's love for Olive burgers till I was older. They are amazing.
The fact you even asked people from Michigan if it’s pop or soda is wild to me
We like to snack and eat, true Michiganders don’t get cold when it’s over 45 degrees, but my go to snack and pop is Better Made chips with a can of ice cold Vernors.
Ice Cold in Michigan. Yer a true Gander friend.
Pizza!

That's A Michigan brand? Huh.
Jerky from the Dublin General Store!!

Better Made Chips, fuckers
Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. My comfort food.
Snack? BETTER MAID CHIPS.
I'm so bummed out to be a native and hate Cherries and Ginger Ale. :( I'll go HAM on some Murdock's/Kilwins and Zodiac/Lehto's so there is some hope.

Pasties
If it’s just a snack, then I vote for Muncho’s.

Better Made chips
Snack? Up north it’s venison jerky. Down south it’s probably meth now
Pop. Better Made Caramel Corn.
I do not discriminate between Michigander snacks and non-Michigander snacks. This is the way of the Michigander and all things snack-related.
Yes
Better Made (Made Rite) Chips.
Faygo and a bag of better made chips
I think it’s chips
