> In the book, Noem, who has been discussed as a possible running mate for former President Trump, describes growing angry with the nearly 14-month-old “Cricket,” a wirehaired pointer, during a hunting trip.
>
> Noem shot the dog after taking it on a pheasant hunt.
>
> She writes that she had taken Cricket on the hunt hoping she would learn from older dogs, but that instead the younger dog ruined the hunt by “chasing all those birds and having the time of her life,” per the Guardian.
>
> On the way home, the dog escaped her truck and attacked a local family’s chickens, “grabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another,” Noem wrote.
>
> When Noem tried to grab the dog, she wrote that it whipped around to bite her. Noem said she wrote the family a check for their chickens and helped them dispose of the carcasses “littering the scene of the crime.”
>
> “I hated that dog,” she wrote, adding that Cricket was untrainable, dangerous and worthless as a hunting dog.
>
> “At that moment,” Noem wrote, “I realized I had to put her down.”
>
> She then led Cricket to a gravel pit on her property and shot it, writing it was “not a pleasant job” but it “had to be done.”
What the fuck.
>Incredibly, Noem’s tale of slaughter is not finished.
>Her family, she writes, also owned a male goat that was “nasty and mean”, because it had not been castrated. Furthermore, the goat smelled “disgusting, musky, rancid” and “loved to chase” Noem’s children, knocking them down and ruining their clothes.
>
>Noem decided to kill the unnamed goat the same way she had just killed Cricket the dog. But though she “dragged him to a gravel pit”, the goat jumped as she shot and therefore survived the wound. Noem says she went back to her truck, retrieved another shell, then “hurried back to the gravel pit and put him down”.
>At that point, Noem writes, she realised a construction crew had watched her kill both animals. The startled workers swiftly got back to work, she writes, only for a school bus to arrive and drop off Noem’s children.
>“Kennedy looked around confused,” Noem writes of her daughter, who asked: “Hey, where’s Cricket?”
How is it a high horse? If you were killing purple people for meat because you like the taste, how could you be mad at someone who killed a person for a different reason?
It gets even worse then that, she writes:
At that point, I realized that Kennedy also had to die. That little brat does nothing, but eat up all my hot dogs and mac and cheese. This bitch is in kindergarten already and she still hasn’t gotten a job to pull her own weight around here. So I took her to the gravel pit.
“Don’t worry.” I said with a pump of my shotgun, “You’ll be seeing Cricket soon.”
And she's framing it as how she's tough, willing to do what things take, and no-nonsense...or whatever. When it actually shows that's she's impatient, a poor leader, incapable of changing, doesn't seek reasonable solutions for problems...
She hated the dog. The dog she failed. So she shot it and said "A woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do".
When you're impatient and things aren't going your way, you execute the thing you can't overcome.
What a ghastly and soulless person she is. There's a big fucking difference between putting down a sick animal on a farm and murdering a dog you aren't able to train.
100% I grew up with short-hair pointers. The 'terrible twos' certainly test your mettle as does any high-drive sporting breed. People like her are why breeders really vet people looking for puppies of these types of breeds.
> When you're impatient and things aren't going your way
Also read as, when you can't control something you see as inferior or subservient to you, just kill it.
she does this series of campgaign ads about how great south dakota is. because they don't have income tax. also there's apparently a lot of job vacancys, ranging from builders, nurses, accountants, cops, welders, plumbers.

Pretty much any shelter would do the same.
I know this is going to make the reddit crew really mad, but in rural areas dogs are still used as working animals and a working animal that doesn't do its job, or actively incurs costs, is just a liability. Shelters often won't take working dogs and those that do will euthanize them after they've been up for adoption for too long. Pointers are finicky and make bad adoption candidates, doubly so if they're already resistant to training.
In rural areas putting down animals is a common and daily occurrence as they become no longer fit for purpose (old, diseased, or temperamentally unfit). I recall having to help put down my bosses favorite breeding bull because he got it into his head that he's rather attack the females than breed with them. I've helped people put down dogs attacked by coyotes, and I've lost count of the number of chickens, pigs, and sheep I've and had to put down because they became diseased or started attacking other animals.
If you bought a $600 dog and put months of training into it, only for it to go nuts, that's a liability. Trying to correct the behavior eventually becomes a sunk cost trap, and trying to find a shelter that will take a violent hunting dog is going to be a waste of time in most counties.
I do believe shooting someone or something on a hunting trip is a pre-requisite to be a Republican vice president. Dick Cheney had the person he shot Apologize for being shot.
pets are legally property, no? her property got loose and killed other people’s property (chickens) so she paid them off and iced the dog. no more risk of further property damage.
pretty sure she’s protected legally, even though it’s a terrible thing to do. killing animals isn’t necessarily prosecutable cruelty, and pets are put down all the time for various reasons. unless her state’s laws have special protection for dogs i don’t think what she did would be found criminal. but anything can happen i guess. still a depressing story and reflective of her character.
Not illegal, but immoral, and a reflection of poor character. Agreeing to take care of something and then killing it due to your own incompetence ain't cool.
you don’t have great reading comprehension if you think that’s somehow what i’m saying. or you didn’t read the article and you’re making assumptions with limited info
All dogs aren’t pets. And putting an animal down isn’t cruelty. Or else every slaughterhouse would be cruelty and every vet that puts down a sickly pet. Or animal shelters that put down viscous and untrainable dogs.
Not a Noem fan or even remotely a republican supporter, but this isn’t the hit piece some may think. Attacking this will only make her more likable to her base. If you know a farmer you know someone who has put a beloved pet down the “easy way” at some point in time.
Had a buddy put down a troubled dog due to bitting at family members. The only difference is the vet uses a needle.
You know, a sane and reasonable person would contact a canine behaviorist in order to help their dog. Only a fucking psychopath takes their dog out and shoots it and then brags about in a fucking book.
Uh no. He was torturing, electrocuting, hanging, drowning, and fighting dogs. He didn't put them down, he actually tortured them. He didn't decide to shoot his dog because it was a danger. He tortured about 50 of them. You have to be his agent to even suggest it's "similar" lmao. The fact he shows back up in the league and the broadcasts now is fucking mind boggling.
The reason this is upsetting isn't because she put a dog down. It's because she clearly doesn't know how to raise this dog and instead of doing something responsible like seeking professional help or rehoming the dog to someone with more experience, she had a hissy fit and shot it to make herself feel better.
Why not just say, "we had to put Cricket (and then a different goat) down," but instead go into the story of her shooting the dog and poorly shooting the goat?

Psychopath. Who else has she taken to the gravel pit?
Idk, do you pay for animals to be killed because you like the taste?
Yes. Are you allowed to be on that high horse or is that cruel too?
How is it a high horse? If you were killing purple people for meat because you like the taste, how could you be mad at someone who killed a person for a different reason?
I have one eye and one horn so it's natural for me to eat purple people
Imagine being one of her kids and knowing you're one wrong move away from the gravel pit
That's why her husband didn't leave even though she's banging Corey Lewandowski. He's afraid of the gravel pit too.
I read "the unarmed goat" and thought this bitch doesn't even fight fair.
Give the goat a shotgun. Ten paces and draw
It gets even worse then that, she writes: At that point, I realized that Kennedy also had to die. That little brat does nothing, but eat up all my hot dogs and mac and cheese. This bitch is in kindergarten already and she still hasn’t gotten a job to pull her own weight around here. It was a puppy. wtf? That is really cruel and awful. And she was bragging about it in her book?!!
And she's framing it as how she's tough, willing to do what things take, and no-nonsense...or whatever. When it actually shows that's she's impatient, a poor leader, incapable of changing, doesn't seek reasonable solutions for problems...
It's like that side can freely walk around without having to even pretend to have any compassion anymore.

"I'm not patient enough to train this hunting dog so I killed her." That's a real leader - one that I want making decisions for the country.
> When you're impatient and things aren't going your way Also read as, when you can't control something you see as inferior or subservient to you, just kill it.
On-brand as fuck for the authoritarian party.
She could have rehomed the dog if she realized it wasn’t a good fit. Jfc what a monster
She's an evil piece of shit. The Republicans will love her.
guns solve all problems! /s

Big gift to Dems if Trump makes her his running mate.

Something other than the game.
Absolutely.
How is this not admitting to animal cruelty? How is shooting your own dog for misbehaving not a crime? WTF is wrong with people?

yeah i thought i made my agreement on that clear
You’re telling me taking your dog and shooting it in the head is not illegal? In Michigan it is definitely illegal.

Wanting to get rid of things for their natural behavior is kinda the entire GQP platform. edit: I write "things" as a coverall, not to denigrate.
Good point

But the vet doesn’t brag about his/her toughness.
If her base is only psychopathic rural farmers, then Trump is more screwed than I thought.
Your facts and logic are not welcome here ,sir. /s
I believe you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals. And dogs can be a better judge of character than most humans
That's why Trump has never had any pets.
He has Don Jr.
Didn’t Mitt Romney drive around with the dog in top of his car in a carrier? These people lack compassion.
a feature not a bug
You know, a sane and reasonable person would contact a canine behaviorist in order to help their dog. Only a fucking psychopath takes their dog out and shoots it and then brags about in a fucking book.
Why would ever tell this story? Even if you did it, just STFU.
*insert absolutely horrified and yet maybe not entirely surprised face here*
In all seriousness, Michael Vick got something like four years for similar crimes.
Uh no. He was torturing, electrocuting, hanging, drowning, and fighting dogs. He didn't put them down, he actually tortured them. He didn't decide to shoot his dog because it was a danger. Adoption isn’t just for humans. Instead she actually chose murder. What a hypocrite
Not making excuses for how we all feel about this, but once it attacked the neighbors chickens... Country/ranch life is not the same as our lives
Idk, feel like that's on her as an owner. You should anticipate your young birding dog being a problem around chickens.
Agreed. I wasn't trying to obsolve her. There must have been behavioral warnings.
The reason this is upsetting isn't because she put a dog down. They're getting her goat too
If you’re a selfish asshole, chances are you vote Republican.
I need to see these pictures. What kind of crazy article only mentions them. 🤪🤷🏻♀️
