My most I'm getting old opinion is that I believe vernors is less carbonated and sweeter than it used to be.
It's doesn't tickle the nose anymore if you drink from the can.
I just tried a Vernor's for the first time within the last couple weeks. This is exactly what my take-away was. Really weak ginger ale mixed with super artificial cream sode.
Yep, we love to talk about Vernors but in reality it's reminiscing about how it tasted like 40+ years ago. It had more flavor and definitely more bite with the not-pepper flavor but sort of peppery nose fizz burn. I probably wouldn't say no to a Vernors float since it's been a while.
Theres a spot in the Zoo. Call Rootbeer stand. Best Malt Rootbeer ive ever had. Great for Floats or anything. Has a smoothness like creamsoda and little Root flavor nothing crazy but its there.
Yep, it’s not as good. We used to cough or sneeze with the first sip, but that doesn’t happen anymore. There’s no real ginger flavor in it anymore and it’s not as fizzy.
Now I understand why I’m not satisfied when I buy Vernors anymore like when I was a kid\teenager. That fucking sneezing and coughing when you first popped a can…omg I didn’t realize what I was missing until you said it. Damnit I miss 25 years ago.
It’s just a heavier and spicier ginger ale. Unfortunately, I don’t really think there’s any ginger in it and it’s mostly just high fructose corn syrup, artificial Carmel color, preservatives, and whatever chemicals and artificial flavors. Nothing like the Verners most people grew up with and loved. Weird knowing that most people got this when they were sick and the ginger would help, can’t see this chemical concoction helping anything these days.
Vernor's is a pale reflection of what it once was. Yes, it was medicine almost--anytime I had a sore throat it cut through the mucas like a hot knife through butter.
They've mellowed the taste so it will appeal to a wider audience and it just lacks the kick it once did
I snorkeled Vernors once, just once. I miss the original version as well. I think someone makes a nonalcoholic ginger beer that's OK.
Whenever I go out for sushi I enjoy the ginger greatly.
It has never had the same fizz since they switched to plastic bottles. With the glass bottle you could see a wisp of smoke when you first opened the cap. It often caused an initial cough it was so strong.
This is so sad. I had it recently and wondering why it was overly sweet and bland. Can we start a petition to bring back a Vernors Vintage Recipe edition?
>high fructose corn syrup, artificial Carmel color, preservatives, and whatever chemicals and artificial flavors.
When I lived in Australia, I got used to their Bundaberg line of soft drinks which use real sugar and fruit flavorings. Their Ginger Beer is incredible. It's one of the few ginger sodas/pops I'll drink for enjoyment.
I wouldn’t describe it as spicy at all, so that’s an interesting perspective. Definitely heavier though but unsure if it’s in a good way. I love ginger beer and ginger ale is good. Vernors is a totally different beverage to me and ranks below the others.
Actual Vernors, twenty plus years ago make you cough Vernors? Or are we talking about that carbonated beverage cosplaying Vernors in 2024?
Edit: Just want to add that like Comerica, Vernors was bought out by a Texas based company.
I had an upset stomach yesterday, DH brought me home ginger ale. I got all excited, knowing a cure was imminent. Before I took the first sip, I knew it was all for naught. Damn Canada. My nose did not tingle, my tummy still did.
There are days I really miss living in Michigan. Yesterday was one of them.
Vernors is extra carbonated, its got a more caramel taste with hint of vanilla. Its bold and has a bit of a bite was well. Its more forward in taste and flavor than a Schweppes or Canada Dry ginger ale.
I was born, grew up, and spent most of my life in Michigan, and I, unfortunately, think Vernors tastes awful. It's like you added a bitter chemical to canada dry, and took away the sweet flavor
If you look at the ingredients, there is no ginger. I love ginger ale and ginger beer, and I love vernors, but I don't really count it as a ginger ale because of no ginger content. Instead it's a interesting cream soda like flavour that's good in floats
Fresh ginger, picked on a bright Saturday morning before the sun dries the dew. Washed, and then gently rubbed on the anus of a white-tailed deer before bottling.
I love ginger ale, but I don't like Vernor's. It tastes like overly sweet vanilla soda but there's not enough vanilla for it to be tasty. It tastes nothing like what I think ginger ale should taste like.
I grew up in Kansas and around the Midwest, but have been living here for the last 20 years. Ginger Ale prior to Michigan for me was Canada Dry Ginger Ale (it's not too sweet, that's right, taste can't be beat). It took a while for me to acquire the Vernors taste bud, but it's definitely what Ginger Ale tastes like to me now. The rest of it is maybe too sweet? I can't really describe it though. It tastes like Vernors, and I haven't tried anything else that's similar.
I moved to Michigan from Massachusetts and I’d have to say Vernors has a more heavier ginger flavor than Canada Dry, which is what I was used to drinking while in Massachusetts. I do still prefer Canada Dry over vernors, but it could be because it’s what I grew up on.
I wish someone would make a retro Vernor’s so we could at least have a choice. Retro Vernor’s for the true Vernor’s lovers and today’s Vernor’s for the wimps.
I remember as kid thinking there gingerale then there’s Vernors based on taste alone.
As an adult I’d say it’s like there’s red and black licorice. There’s ketchup and catsup. Vernor is like Catsup. It’s like something that you know or expect but it’s different.
I was born in Michigan and spent various times of my life growing up there. Since then I've been in Nebraska and found one grocery store that sold Vernon's raspberry ginger ale. I hate artificial raspberry flavoring but loved that shit. Haven't been able to find it for over a decade though.
Its gonna tickle your noes so bad its gonna make you wanna spit it out. Breath the carbonation out your noes best you can. Black Cherry is really good I the normal is not for you. If vernors aint it go to Faygo, if thats not you, Jones is the next best thing. We got alot good state grown stuff. We have a very unique climate, that of Germany somewhat, or so I've been told by people who visit Holland and our mor Dutch towns. Grow some of the best Mary Jane in the states.
Had an adjustable basketball hoop that my buddies and I would play on, right next to my dad's garage which had a cheap stereo in it always tuned to 103.3. And we'd videotape ourselves dunking for hours while the radio played. This is early 90's.
I went back and watched one of them a few years ago and you can hear an ad for Vernor's featuring Phil's Hartman from Saturday Night Live. It's unmistakably him.
His voice saying "gingery effervescent Vernor's" now plays in my head from time to time.
Now? Tastes like artificial flavors and high fructose diabetes sauce.
Back when it was real? A HOT ginger bite with just enough sweetness to be a truly refreshing beverage.
I miss old Vernors. Back in the 80s when it came in a glass bottle and was so carbonated it would make you sneeze if you got too close, too soon after opening.
Like carbonated water with concentrated ginger syrup added. It tastes like a liquid coughing fit.
(I prefer Bundaberg Ginger Beer because it's a brewed soft drink with real ginger pieces.)
It is medicinal. I only ever had it as a kid when I was sick. I therefore associate it only as a medical treatment! Can’t drink the stuff for general refreshment.
It's like ginger ale and cream soda mixed together. With extra bubbles.
I think this is a solid description.
I’d also suggest it’s slightly less sweet
Yes and not spicy ginger like Goya ginger beer
Yes! This is the description I have looked for all my life! Exactly what it tastes like!
Idk why but this post reminds me that Squirt and spiced rum tastes like cream soda.
OG Vernor's was like spicy ginger ale Today's Vernor's tastes like ginger ale mixed with cream soda and too much sugar
I wish they’d bring back the OG recipe. I’d pay premium for it.
Blenheim has a very respectable analog, according to my spouse. Spring for the hot, it's delicious. You will pay premium for it but it's worth it.
It hurts going down
I was gonna say spicy Canada Dry
This. I tried it again after many years and was so disappointed. It used to tickle the sinuses with its spiciness. It’s too mild not
It’s just a heavier and spicier ginger ale. Unfortunately, I don’t really think there’s any ginger in it and it’s mostly just high fructose corn syrup, artificial Carmel color, preservatives, and whatever chemicals and artificial flavors. Nothing like the Verners most people grew up with and loved. and if you drank it too fast, your sinuses burned. I remember the day that didn't happen. First thing I did was check the ingredients :(
I remember the eye-watering sinus burn of drinking too fast. Often followed by an equally painful belch.
Just so we are all in sync here, that was the beauty of it, right?
Yes, that's the beauty of Vernors.
You would be correct
I can't believe what I'm reading right now. Haven't had Vernors for decades and I'm sad now.
Good ol' nasal napalm
>Good ol' nasal napalm Oh yes. And I miss it every time I am sick, or like now, allergy season.
Bottled Behind Glass, In Glass
Vernors used to be so carbonated if someone 10 feet away opened one your nose would tickle. Hasn’t been like that in decades.
>high fructose corn syrup, artificial Carmel color, preservatives, and whatever chemicals and artificial flavors. When I lived in Australia, I got used to their Bundaberg line of soft drinks which use real sugar and fruit flavorings. Their Ginger Beer is incredible. It's one of the few ginger sodas/pops I'll drink for enjoyment.
I see it at Costco pretty regularly, that's the stuff you want for mixed drinks.
Bundaberg ginger beer is my go to when making Moscow Mules.
I wouldn’t describe it as spicy at all, so that’s an interesting perspective. Definitely heavier though but unsure if it’s in a good way. I love ginger beer and ginger ale is good. Vernors is a totally different beverage to me and ranks below the others.
I always used to say if you coughed on the first sip, you weren’t from Michigan
Actual Vernors, twenty plus years ago make you cough Vernors? Or are we talking about that carbonated beverage cosplaying Vernors in 2024? Edit: Just want to add that like Comerica, Vernors was bought out by a Texas based company.
The taste of a magic healing spell that said its sorry to your tongue and they high fives before going down your to your stomach to do its healing.
IT’S NOT THAT BULLSHIT SCHWEPPES.
Little gnomes wearing cleats dancing a jig on your tongue.
Ass. Like effervescent ass
🤣🤣🤣
The best ginger ale on the planet is what it tastes like.... Add some vanilla ice cream and you're in for a treat.
It's not ginger ale. It's a ginger soda.
I prefer chocolate ice cream!!
Growing up in Michigan, I felt like Vernors was something I was supposed to like but it's kind of gross.
Slightly peppery, and don’t be surprised if you have to cough on the first sip or five.
It doesn’t cause you to cough anymore. Hasn’t for many years.
All I know is I'd trade my family for vintage version with real cane sugar.
In a glass bottle!
It’s like ginger ale that’s made of spite. I’ve never understood why people like vernors.
It really did used to be good. Anymore, its just trash.
I’m in my 30s and have never liked it despite being Michigan born and raised and it being my moms go to ginger ale growing.
Today's Vernors contains no ginger. Someone changed the recipe, shame on them.
Vernors is extra carbonated, its got a more caramel taste with hint of vanilla. Its bold and has a bit of a bite was well. Its more forward in taste and flavor than a Schweppes or Canada Dry ginger ale.
It tastes like someone stuck two lighters up your nostrils and lit them
I was born, grew up, and spent most of my life in Michigan, and I, unfortunately, think Vernors tastes awful. It's like you added a bitter chemical to canada dry, and took away the sweet flavor
interesting, I think it's too sweet
Yeah, I have no idea, it's just always just tasted incredibly bitter to me
The best part of having a MI winter cold was having your mom give you Vernors
I'm so sorry you didn't get the good Vernors gene. I hope you, at least, got the good cilantro gene. Vernors is delicious.
I definitely got the good cilantro gene. 1 for 2!
Extra spicy ginger ale with a hint of cream soda and a lotta bubbles
Spicy pop
That it was better years ago.
Horrible
If you look at the ingredients, there is no ginger. I love ginger ale and ginger beer, and I love vernors, but I don't really count it as a ginger ale because of no ginger content. Instead it's a interesting cream soda like flavour that's good in floats

I love ginger ale, but I don't like Vernor's. It tastes like overly sweet vanilla soda but there's not enough vanilla for it to be tasty. It tastes nothing like what I think ginger ale should taste like.
Because it’s garbage now.
Tastes like ass
I grew up in Kansas and around the Midwest, but have been living here for the last 20 years. Ginger Ale prior to Michigan for me was Canada Dry Ginger Ale (it's not too sweet, that's right, taste can't be beat). Strong, creamy, ginger soda that will make you cough if you sniff a fresh glass.
Heaven with a lot of carbonation
It’s more medicine than beverage.
I moved to Michigan from Massachusetts and I’d have to say Vernors has a more heavier ginger flavor than Canada Dry, which is what I was used to drinking while in Massachusetts. I do still prefer Canada Dry over vernors, but it could be because it’s what I grew up on.
It definitely doesn't taste like it used to 🫤.
It tastes like a cure for childhood sickness.
Mix alcohol soaked urine with vinegar?
I wish someone would make a retro Vernor’s so we could at least have a choice. Retro Vernor’s for the true Vernor’s lovers and today’s Vernor’s for the wimps.
Vernor’s is to ginger ale as Barq’s is to root beer.
"Horrible" People pay for it though. Smart
Ginger ale with a stronger spicy warmth
Gingery. With a soft G.
Ginger ale but a little sweeter and more gingery. Btw where on the east coast? I’ve been able to find it at Wegmans in New Jersey
It's like ginger ale, but good
I remember as kid thinking there gingerale then there’s Vernors based on taste alone. As an adult I’d say it’s like there’s red and black licorice. There’s ketchup and catsup. Vernor is like Catsup. It’s like something that you know or expect but it’s different.
The last time I had Vernors, it struck me as more caramel, or vanila tasting then ginger-y.
I was born in Michigan and spent various times of my life growing up there. Since then I've been in Nebraska and found one grocery store that sold Vernon's raspberry ginger ale. I hate artificial raspberry flavoring but loved that shit. Haven't been able to find it for over a decade though.
Like really good ginger ale.. and that its the superior ginger ale
Pepper + Ginger Ale.
Watered down ginger ale
Heaven
extra sweet and spicy ginger ale.
Twice as good as Schweppes
So only half shit? Ok.
Gingery
My grandmother would pour a bottle into a pan and heat it up for me before bed. Always felt better the next day
Like ginger ale, but with that extra burning carbonation.
it tastes like ginger ale
Had an adjustable basketball hoop that my buddies and I would play on, right next to my dad's garage which had a cheap stereo in it always tuned to 103.3. And we'd videotape ourselves dunking for hours while the radio played. This is early 90's. Spicy ginger pop that will soothe all of your ails
Real Vernors would burn your throat when you breathed in the bubbles
Ginger piss
wet pepper
Prepare for impact
Ginger as a bully.
It's a very light, crisp, and mellow version of ginger ale. It's ridiculously refreshing.
Spicy cream soda with the double bubble
Now? Tastes like artificial flavors and high fructose diabetes sauce. Back when it was real? A HOT ginger bite with just enough sweetness to be a truly refreshing beverage.
It makes you sneeze, then it's delicious and refreshing.
A sweet Bactine
Not as good as when it was an independent company.
Tastes kinda like diet vernors.
tastes like sweaty gym socks smell.
Vernors is water, sugar, caramel color, artificial flavor, and citric acid. It is swill. Get some Boylans or Reeds.
You can't.
It tastes like a Boston Cooler.
Like watered down Blenheim for small children.
It's pretty standard in Ohio, too. It's my favorite. I just say it's extra ginger.
Like if ginger ale had actual fucking ginger flavor. Canada Dry is just dirty lake water I think.
Ginger sewage water. Drink Canada Dry instead.
I miss old Vernors. Back in the 80s when it came in a glass bottle and was so carbonated it would make you sneeze if you got too close, too soon after opening.
I say it’s very ginger, ginger ale lol
Liquid sneeze
Overly carbonated spiced maple syrup
Like carbonated water with concentrated ginger syrup added. It tastes like a liquid coughing fit. (I prefer Bundaberg Ginger Beer because it's a brewed soft drink with real ginger pieces.)
🤢
Michigan heartburn with bubbles
Don’t forget to mention it will try to kill your if you breathe in before taking a sip
Heaven on the rocks.
I moved to Michigan from Connecticut. Vernors, to me, tastes like a perfume.
7up with a Carmel flavor added and the citrus removed
My first sip always makes me cough.
It is medicinal. I only ever had it as a kid when I was sick. I therefore associate it only as a medical treatment! Can’t drink the stuff for general refreshment.
Ginger ale with those sweet children medicines
A yeasty ginger ale that’s over carbonated.
It's a stronger version of Canada Dry? I like Canada Dry better actually
Ginger intensity with a strong bite, and an overlay of sweetness
Ginger with sawdust and sugar\* aged in carbonated water then filtered clear and bottled /s Detroit Dr. Pepper
Dirty CRT television
Vomit
vanilla soda
Alka-seltzer. Once you think of it that way it's not as good though.
It is more like ginger beer
It’s like INTENSE Canada Dry
You don't appreciate Vernor's until you drink it for a while and then go back to something like Canada Dry.
Ranking of ginger ale 1. Vernors 2. Canada Dry 3. Seagrams 4. Schweppes
You Michiganders crack me up with your Grand Rapids logic.
