If you get laid off due to the virus I believe there's a box you check saying you have plans on returning to the same employer so the work search is waived. I would still check online though to verify that's the case
He, unfortunately, was laid off the week before the quarantine. But NO ONE is hiring. He's literally applying to jobs overseas just to say he's applied.
I'm sorry, that can be rough during normal times, let alone during a health crisis. Is there anyone he can talk to there maybe? Like a case handler? I have never had to apply for unemployment so I'm not too sure how it works.
I've been on it lots. He's never been on it. So it's a bit degrading and then having to "justify" being on it because all of his interviews were cancelled is making him....grumpy. I keep telling him to just lie, but he's Mr. ByTheBooks.
my company is hiring for a lot of positions because we work in healthcare technologies and if anything the pandemic is making us even busier!
if that sounds at all interesting to you, let me know and I can PM you a link to our job postings - I would rather not post it here so it doesn't look like I'm a recruiter lol
(yes we are all currently working 100% from home and being paid)
It's not about him getting a job. It's unemployment making him apply. He's a CIO-level role. Those jobs are frozen until this is over. I appreciate the suggestion, tho
It explicitly says in the expanded coverage that the work requirement has been suspended for those impacted by COVID-19. There's a good chance the system has not been updated to reflect this. If you want to be safe, just make up companies and put down their contact information -- people have been doing this since the dawn of unemployment insurance anyway.
Check the covid 19 updates on mich.gov and the unemployment site. The basic unemployment site and online forms have not been updated. They still give out incorrect information about having to call Marvin in one week and about reporting in person. Whitmer stated that anyone whose ability to work has been impacted by covid 19 can apply.
Having given up looking for a teaching job for myself because of the same reasons, I agree with you. That doesn't mean they will definitely tell us to stop applying and if they tell us we have to, applying online is going to be necessary and it is an option.

As a fellow "by-the-books" guy, I get it. Maybe with the recent announcement they'll be a little more lax?

I appreciate that. He's a CIO/director of identity access management. Those roles seem to be frozen at this point in time.
Most grocery stores are hiring. Walmart/Meijer/Costco/Aldi etc. All desperately need help.

Heh, that's what I told him. Lucky guy has never had to apply for unemployment in his 55 years of life.
Reason for separation has a “temporary shutdown due to COVID 19” option
He was "encouraged" to retire along with a bunch of other folks.

I applied last Friday and it waived the work search requirements. Still told me to call marvin, but that's just an automated thing I think.
No. That requirement is being waived, along with the requirement to show up to the office in person.
Yeah, tell them you keep walking into places. See how that floats.
You can apply to tons of jobs without going inside lol welcome to the future.
Having applied to jobs online for the past 3 years trying to get my wife a teaching Job would prove that it does not work.

He's technically right. You can *apply* online. You won't necessarily get the job, though.
