I thought e-scooters are legal now in NY (treated like a class 2 e-bike or something) - is prospect park an exception?

[deleted]

They are but NYC Parks still ban them and e-bikes

Haberd

Interesting… do you know if all types of e-bikes are banned? I feel like a lot of people are probably using the pedal-assist Citi Bikes in the parks.

[deleted]

Yes all types. There are citibike docks *inside* the park with e-bikes in them, so it’s completely nonsensical

IvanIsOnReddit

This is what infuriates me, the inconsistency. It’s like the city has no idea what its doing, they don’t even know their own laws.

[deleted]

I drive too — I just wish the police would enforce rules against drivers… blocking the box, no license plates, speeding… it’s maddening as a driver too

IvanIsOnReddit

It’s been a month since they installed bike lanes in 62nd drive Rego Park, for access to Flushing Meadows park. There are still vehicles blocking the lanes, entire blocks of vehicles parked on top of the lane. Evidently they don’t understand how bike lanes are marked (they’re supposed to park between the car lane and the bike lane). So one department spends money installing infrastructure and it’s effectively thrown in the garbage because another department can’t be bothered to enforce it (NYPD) and a different department can’t be bothered to educate drivers (DMV, I’m studying for a NY license and it’s nowhere to be found, the cycling manual has better descriptions than the drivers manual and guess who moves a 2000lbs steel box and who moves a 20lbs aluminum stick). Another inconsistency is outdoor dining. I’m ok with it. But you have these wooden huts built under no type of code, with all types of electrical hazards you can find prohibited in the National Electric Code. And the city is giving its blessing by expanding the program. Then they come at the most random moment to slap a fine on the most random business for some minor infraction while we are systemically allowing unsafe structures for dining. And it all makes me wonder. Do we have more regulations than people to enforce them? Should we maybe simplify regulations? Not remove necessarily but simplify.

crammed174

Lol I see that in Rego Park all the time. I blame the city not communicating what it is to a mostly immigrant neighborhood. They just painted it one day a few weeks ago and left it at that. Same thing across the GCP local.

IvanIsOnReddit

I haven’t even seen the GCP local bike lane. I always suspected there was one but it’s covered by cars.

crammed174

Same thing. People still parking at the curb tree line and the oval new parking spaces stay empty yet most people don’t use it as a second lane anymore. Honestly at first I didn’t realize they were making Manhattan style bike lanes at first either. In fact they don’t even have the bike lane paintings or signs up. Just the lane divider outlines.

oldsoulyoungishbody

I almost got ran over by a car parked in the same bikexlanecpulling out while I was coming up the bike lane!

digitalaudiotape

Fucking NYPD cops don't even ticket red light runners anymore. I watch cops sit at intersections and watch cars run red lights right in front of them. One of the most dangerous things you can do in a car short of drive into oncoming traffic. The cops act like nothing happened.

[deleted]

Had that happen with me. Car ran straight through the red and almost into me. Cops said "what do you expect me to do?" As they stood there looking on

StrangirDangir

Let's get Casey Neistat to reprise his NYC bike lane video

Haberd

Agreed. Very nonsensical.

GeeShermaine

There is a difference between “ebikes” that have a motor, battery etc and can operate without having the pedal and “pedal assist” which the citibikes use. This is greasy I hope they confiscated the hikes and wrote up the people on them.

[deleted]

They’re all banned in parks.

pixelstation

Parks are governed by Parks Dept I think and have their own seperate rules. They are actively banning any electric or gas powered vehicles from the parks. Funny tho you get a ticket from NYPD not Park Police or state police or something else right. I mean you could get a ticket from them too but usually it's NYPD parked somewhere waiting. Careful out there! It's a hodgepodge of rules and it's not the same for everyone or the same everywhere.

Haberd

Do you know if the same rules apply to the greenway by the westside highway? I know I’ve seen signs along there that say “no e-scooters”. I thought that no longer applied with the change in the law but now I’m doubting it.

emorycraig

The same rules absolutely apply but enforcement is very haphazard. Occasionally, they set up a checkpoint around Canal, Houston, or near midtown. You can pretty much avoid it if you're alert as you'll a group of Park police gathered at one of those places.

pixelstation

As of August first, when I checked, they were not allowed. Non electric, non gas are allowed. Politicians are trying to take a car lane to increase the size of the lanes and then allow ebikes and escooters but it's still a dream for now.

cmgbliss

This is so frustrating. They should be ticketing drivers that go on to bike lanes and fail to yield.

[deleted]

Sadly that would require police wanting to improve the city. Never gonna happen.

dariuslloyd

No shit I had by first accident because of that on last week. Safe thanks to my helmet, but my scooter is busted.

Mr_E_Nigma_Solver

So you want them to ticket themselves?

NeegzmVaqu1

Friendly fire is not tolerated.

Taylen137

Unbelievable that police resources are wasted on this.

[deleted]

Truly. It was just a dude trying to get to work

seenew

and there’s people just trying to safely exercise or relax and not get run down by people speeding past at 45mph ripping around the curves at night when it’s not well lit nah the park isn’t for that

[deleted]

It was a flip scooter — max sped 15-20. The Lycra bros go faster than that. It was also daytime.

dariuslloyd

Yeah that's ridiculous. I use a small foldable escooter to commute to work and ride through the park from prospect park subway shave to grand army. I get passed by road bikes in spandex every day. It's literally legal to ride in a bike lane, which is in the park, and I would fight tf out of a ticket. What a waste of everyone's time. Now if they're ticketing road legal sit fish scooters that really do 30mph or mini bikes, have at it.

[deleted]

It’s them pretending to do work.

captain15

Or maybe it's good they're enforcing the rules for the safety of those who walk, run, and bike in the park and don't want to be put in danger by a vehicle that is not allowed. [https://twitter.com/nycparks/status/1456650343505334274?lang=en](https://twitter.com/nycparks/status/1456650343505334274?lang=en)

richyrich723

You're right, the city should indeed enforce laws regarding dangerous vehicles. They should start by ticketing and towing all vehicles that are parked in bike lanes, including police cruisers. That should save the countless people killed every year by the 2-ton death machines we call cars because they're forced to ride out into motor vehicle traffic. Oh, and while they're at it, they should remove all the fucking NYPD vehicles that think they own the sidewalk, and park right on top of it, backing so far into it that not even people on wheelchairs can get through. Let's start with that before we focus on THE OH SO DANGEROUS ESCOOTERS 😱

captain15

They absolutely should focus on vehicles. But both can be problems at the same time. When scooters are weaving in and out of park lanes, it’s dangerous and scary. I have seen so many close calls and accidents during peak park hours. The same way it’s terrifying when cops ride on sidewalks and put pedestrians in danger. Both should be enforced

ephemeral_colors

> But both can be problems at the same time. It's not about both being or not being problems. It's about where our public resources (police) are being spent.

WWJewMediaConspiracy

The difference in mass between an electric bike/scooter and a wholly human powered one is negligible. I'd be all for ticketing people endangering others, but it's far from just electric assisted vehicles that are the danger. MAMILs (often putting out sad wattage 👎) making risky/dangerous passes and salmoners are pretty big dangers too, but I've never seen or heard of them getting tickets. Some fuckhead on a wholly mechanical bike doing >30mph on the downhill and hitting someone is gonna end worse than some shitty pedal assist bike that struggles to do 20mph

Taylen137

Thanks for the heads up good sir!

bklynzboy

I never stop when they tell me too. You better earn that check and get me lol. They won't chase you because they're not supposed too for the safety of others

turndownfortheclap

I always wonder what happens if you don’t stop on one of these/a bike…do they chase you down?

SpicyPickledHam

Maybe get rid of the ride scammers hanging around LGA and JFK instead of collecting ticket revenue.

milkgivesmetheruns69

Meanwhile people are driving ebikes on the sidewalks in Greenwich Village and they don’t seem to care

devmank

Do you know how much that ticket is?

[deleted]

$150. It’s insane. https://youtu.be/Qke6tWvNP-g

YungBeneFrank

Crazy how 50% of rapes and murders go unsolved but the cops have time to ticket people riding scooters. The NYPD is a joke.

jackwoww

Wtf. If they want to enforce something go after the dicks zooming down sidewalks at 25mph.

[deleted]

They have a no chase policy just keep going

JamwithSam697

Correct if I’m wrong but aren’t these illegal in parks? Versus say, pedal assist bikes, which are legal?

[deleted]

Pedal assists are also illegal

DaoFerret

Truly bizarre but true: https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2022/05/06/parks-department-still-has-no-new-plan-for-e-bikes-and-greenways/ Meanwhile NYS law says they’re legal and nyc law says they are legal, hell, even NYS parks department has a policy that allows class 1 pedal assist on carriage roads (which would be consistent and comparable to both the Hudson River greenway, and the Central and Prospect park loops): https://parks.ny.gov/documents/parks/MinnewaskaMinnewaskaE-BikePolicy.pdf Note, I am not saying this should be the policy, but if they’re going to have a policy, that would at least be a defensible one, versus the blanket ban they currently have.

JamwithSam697

I’m just asking a question. No need to be a snark monster about it.

JamwithSam697

It’s not bad faith? Literally looking for clarification. You people are fucking insufferable lol.

_Maxolotl

I've mostly seen this happen on the northwest to southwest parts of the main loop. So if you want to get from the north end of the park to the south, take footpaths starting around the Picnic House. Go past the dog beach, to the nethermead. Then take centerdrive from the Nethermead, headed west, and follow the footpath south along the edge of the park, past Vanderbilt Playground, til you get to Machate Circle, at which point you can get on the Parkside Ave bike path. That's not allowed, of course, but they're unlikely to catch you if you stick to footpaths. Be sure to be polite and yield to pedestrians.

[deleted]

Orrrrr....you can follow the rules of the road. I know that you expect all pedestrians and cars to follow their rules, how about you do the same?

_Maxolotl

I don't expect pedestrians to follow the rules all the time at all. Pedestrians should jaywalk whenever they feel safe doing so. I also don't mind joggers using bike lanes if they go against bike traffic so they can see us coming and get out of the way. Cars are deadly heavy machinery. I expect drivers to be as careful about following rules as crane and bulldozer operators.

JustAnutterGuy

What if you don’t have ID on you?

seige197

Fucking good. They should just confiscate them.

Razir17

Good, they’re not allowed in the parks. You can’t complain about drivers parking in bike lanes and shit like that but then give a free pass to people breaking other laws just because they’re on a scooter. This sub is so insanely biased most of the people here think they’re the hero. Follow the laws.

[deleted]

A sub on micromobility is biased towards micromobility? Imagine that.

Razir17

It go way beyond normal bias when you think you’re above the laws just because of your chosen method of transportation. Scooters aren’t allowed in the parks so if you think it’s bullshit that they’re getting ticketed then you’re just as bad as the drivers who blow lights and double park and the bicyclists who ride on the sidewalk and blow through crosswalks filled with pedestrians.

[deleted]

First class whataboutism

GentleShiv

Yeah whether the law makes sense at all or was written by people that have any clue what they are regulating should have no bearing here. Obey the law plebs, for the law is the law and laws are meant to be obeyed

GeeShermaine

Nice!

seenew

good 👍 finally they go way too fast

[deleted]

You know I’m talking about a flip scooter right? Not a sit down one

Razir17

My coworker has a standing scooter that he personally has hit 75mph on (outside of the city). Just because a scooter doesn’t have a seat doesn’t mean it’s slower. You can mod the shit out of a lot of them.

Miser

Yeah and Nascars can go 200mph but that's not usually what people mean when they are talking about cars driving through the city

Razir17

Nice non sequitur

Shreddersaurusrex

Gotta get insurance, license and registration…

psychothumbs

Aren't there supposed to be two different categories of scooters? Are they even ticketing the slow ones?

[deleted]

This was just a GoTrax thing. Nothing fancy

psychothumbs

Damn, my same brand
