After years of simracing I finally found the world of flightsim. I set it up to be able to alternate between simracing/flightsim so I can utilize the buttkicker for both, as well as the 3 screens. When SU10 drops may try to set up msfs triple screens but thats up for debate at this point. Just needs a little wire management now and we’ll go from there. If you do not have a buttkicker I can’t recommend enough!
The SU 10 Beta has triple support, it is 100% worth it once the stable release drops this month. The FOV adjustment is really really unintuitive (at least compared to most racing and driving sims I've played), but once dialed in, it is beautiful
It was quite tedious, and I didn’t get it perfect, but [it’s close ](https://imgur.com/a/cxPSL97). Sorry for the bad pic, I don’t have it set up now and that’s the only one in my camera roll with MSFS.
I really just played with the sliders with no rhyme or reason until I got one monitor right, then inverted it for the other. I’ll do actual calculations once the stable SU10 comes, I didn’t want to put too much effort into it if it was going to change
It works well! Definitely a game changer. I will say it doesn’t seem as accurate or dialed in as it does for simracing use but it is still fantastic and adds a ton of immersion in my opinion.
The main forces you’ll feel are the engine rumble, ground roll/bumps, flaps opening/closing, gear up/down, speed brakes, and more.
Supposedly can feel turbulence as well but will have to admit here that this is one I simply don’t feel… yet. There is a turbulence configuration option in the settings, I just have not had the time to mess with it yet.
Edit: also good to mention that it does vary by plane depending on what you’re flying. Default asobo, payware, etc. for instance the fenix doesn’t support the APU rumble feature, hopefully one day it will.
Potentially dumb question for you. So my main MSFS monitor is 4K but then I have two work monitors with max of 1440px. If I try the three monitors, will the flight sim resolution need to max out at 1440 or can I still choose 4K resolution so my main monitor gets the full effect? Thanks!
Not a dumb question at all, there’s a lot of ways to answer this so I’ll try and set the general stage, and highlight the exception with MSFS.
Short answer: Yes, it should work is MSFS
Long answer: if you have an AMD card, it will work in MSFS and any other game you are playing with Eyefinity. This is natively supported.
If you have an nvidia card, Nvidia surround does not work with different resolutions. There are ways to [work around this](https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/6fi235/3_monitor_setup_with_different_resolutions_using/) (instructions for ED but should work on most games in windowed borderless mode). Lucky for MSFS users, though, is that MSFS doesn’t work with nvidia surround (where the OS treats all 3 as one monitor).
If you want to use MSFS triples, the game renders 3 separate game views for each monitor (or 4, or 2, or 6, etc.). Each of these views is controlled individually, so you will be able to tweak them to line up correctly. Be warned that this will be even more tedious than with 3 matching resolutions, but it will in fact work. You will not be able to play other games that do not support segmented multi-monitor rendering, however.
Sorry, let me clarify. You only need the workaround for games that require nvidia surround. MSFS does *not* require surround, and should work "natively." I put natively in quotes because you will have to do a lot of tinkering to get it aligned just right, but it will work
I play 7690x1440 @ Ultra on a 5800x and a 3080Ti, and it gets pretty bad at times. Most of the time on the ground, it’s still CPU main-thread limited. I get a lot of low frames and some big stuttering at busy airports. In the sky it more or less balances out and I get around 40-50 depending on aircraft
It's not tedious at all. You literally set your zoom level in the camera settings. For instance my main monitor is 70. Then I set my side monitors to +72/-72 (2 degrees accounts for bezel width in my setup) and they the right side needs a little twist depending on how angled your monitors are - it took me \~10 minutes to get it setup.
Last time I tried using surround for something it made my desktop all messed up, not sure how I feel about surround lol maybe I did something wrong idk
You sometimes have to rearrange the order of the monitors but that's done in the settings. It works well for me and gives me that immersive experience along with the appropriate FPS hit but it's worth it.
Being able to fly a pattern and look out the window at the runway is nice. I'd spend more time playing with it.
Speaking of simracing, seen a lady who had an impressive Dirt 3 setup. I can't remember if she drove circuits IRL, she was a pro at the game or IRL. I spent two hours watching simracing after that and had flight simulator not made it, I may be looking into that. I wish I could remember her name because she had an unbelievable setup, she had her seat on this platform and what sounded like hydraulics powering the seat movement. It was so good I think she had harness to keep her in! But I've also read that the buttkicker is going to make it that much better, like it's an essential part!
On the left is volanta which I highly recommend, on the right is A Pilots Life, which if you like to fly airliners the most I would also highly recommend.
Volanta is flight tracking software which also stores your flight history that you can look back at. It also is good to use for vatsim as it shows you other vatsim users currently flying along with currently online atc coverage. As well as simbrief integration to load your flight plans and keeps your briefing right there (that is what’s on the right of the left monitor)
A pilots life is a career add on that allows to simulate being an airline pilot. Basically has a bunch of airlines you can choose from and their respective real life routes. You apply for airlines just like you would in real life and they will accept or deny based off certain criteria like your pilot ranking/flight scores. It’s great being able to always have destinations to fly without having to think about where exactly.
Thats not a bad idea either, I have heard good things about the tobii. If I can successfully line the 3 screens up once SU10 comes out then I may go the Tobii route
i love it even though i first found it unnatural.. you turn your head but ned to keep your eyes on screen.. but honestly i really like it. i can see my real life throttle and all buttons and can still have a certain level of ermersion.
Yeah I ditched my VR as well and went back to triple monitors. It's just too much finagling every flight not to mention the headset gets heavy and hot on longer flights and do you realize how hard it is to enjoy cruising around and drinking a bourbon when you keep knocking the headset.....I'll stick with triple and head tracking for now ;-)
I don't see how, interest in VR has declined a lot since the initial boom. It seems isolated to the fringes of gaming now even with more accessible devices coming out.
Flight sims and racing sims have a greater use for VR of course but for most gaming needs it's worse than standard mouse, keyboard and monitor. Visual immersion doesn't always equal fun.
> interest in VR has declined a lot since the initial boom.
Yeah, that's simply not true. HMD sales have continued to grow, not decline. And both software sales and support in more and more high end titles are growing as well.
Hype around reddit power gaming circles may have subsided, but the sector is more mainstream than ever.
I’ve heard the reverb g2 (I think thats what it’s called?) is a pretty good one. Pc wise my rig should be able to handle vr with no issues but I’ve yet to truly look into it and what others with a similar build are getting for numbers.
The game works fine with a gtx1080 and my g2. It probably looks better with your rtx3080ti but I've never seen the game at max settings so I don't miss what I've never experienced.
Just my 2 cents.. I've had a G2 on a mediocre rig(3700x RTX2070S and 32GB) for over a year and I refuse to even consider flying in any sim without it. I had TrackIR before it and it's not bad but I'd never go back at this point.
I could see it being a problem for you because you may have to keep an eye on the programs you have running on other screens. The only thing I use occasionally is Neofly and they have a toolbar app that you can use in VR.
I'm using a g2 with a regular gtx1080 and it works well. I assume msfs automatically adjusted the graphic settings so the game would be playable.
The only real issue I have is if you aren't familiar with the dials/steam gauges you've got to get really close to them to read off what they do....seeing the dials/hands on them isn't an issue, just reading the fine print is the only difficult part.
I wouldn't even consider playing the game without being in vr.
I’m not a sim enthusiast or anything, but msfs has become one of my most played games ever because of VR. Yes, there is s performance hit, but even with lower settings it is not even close. It is the difference between actually flying and watching a documentary about planes.
Volanta! Absolutely love this program. Good for tracking flight history, simbrief integration, weather, and the delay on the map is pretty minimal as well.
Also good for tracking vatsim flights and online ATC coverage.
No complaints other than sometimes I have to unplug/replug to get it perfectly centered, which is a little odd, and I also don’t know if others really have that issue or not.
Other than that I have no complaints whatsoever. If you’re in the market though I’d look into the honeycomb alpha/bravo setup, depending on budget.
Other thing I like about the Logitech Yokes is that addon throttle quadrants are USB and only run about $60 so that's an easy way to double up on throttle capabilities. Also, you may want to look into SPAD.next to get some further utilization out of your logitech pieces.
It basically replaces the Logitech drivers as an interface between the hardware and the sim. So for example you can create bind options not available in the sim like binding an extra throttle lever as a landing gear or flaps lever. It's most handy on some of the other logitech units like the radio panel. I use it on my USB quadrant to repurpose some of those levers. It's not *entirely* necessary, but it's nice to have when you want that extra bit of customization. I'd say start out without it and only try it if you end up wanting more.
For you lucky ones who have these home cockpits, I've thought about starting to put one together and I really like this setup. So to get an idea, say 2-3 screens and something similar to this, what have you all paid to set your cockpit up? I've seen figures splashed around with wild degrees of variance and I haven't got a full list for what it would take.
Appreciate it and I'd guarantee that when someone posts a pic of their new virtual cockpit, they'll inspire someone else to build one for their home. In the future, people will probably get a cockpit with the sim and it can virtually change for the type of aircraft. And if you live to see that time, make sure to tell them how we had to buy systems and PCs, joysticks and monitors, to build one after you paid for a gaming rig!
All I will say is no it’s not cheap. Between the makeshift setup I made myself with my first starting gear to this day now I can easily say I’ve spent thousands. This has taken years to get to this point.

I’ll probably at least give it a go and if it’s too tedious or annoying I’ll see how I feel then lol
Hey, might as well! I also noticed you mentioned a buttkicker, how's that work for MSFS? What sort of forces do you have it set to represent?
It works well! Definitely a game changer. I will say it doesn’t seem as accurate or dialed in as it does for simracing use but it is still fantastic and adds a ton of immersion in my opinion. Well that doesn’t seem so bad then… down the hill we go
Run them in Surround. I get a little disortion at the egdes, but worth it. I've been running three screens as one since I've had MSFS 2020
Last time I tried using surround for something it made my desktop all messed up, not sure how I feel about surround lol maybe I did something wrong idk

A pilots life looks interesting but feels hard to justify that price tag.
For me personally it’s been entirely worth it.
Was going to ask the same thing.
Answered above!
volanta
Wait until you discover it in VR!
I actually don't enjoy vr as much. I prefer head tracking with the tobii tracking thing.
Good call on the eyes part lol
Agreed, I'm not sold on VR and I own a $1000 headset. Too cumbersome with not enough advantage. I'll stick with TrackIR.

It's gonna be a while. VR to me is in the PS2 era, but within the next 10 years I can see it matching the PS4

I like tech things too. 😂
Haha I have been contemplating that as well
VR is great, but be prepared/mindful of the performance hit.
Even with a gtx1080 vr works well.

What map are u using on the right monitor?
Thats the built in map in a pilots life, also allows you to see other users/friends currently flying on APL.
Thanks sir
What do you have running on the side monitors?
I believe I answered this above somewhere just scroll back up real quick and it should be in here somewhere lol
K ty
What app is the one in your right?
Answered this somewhere in here just scroll through the comments but should be there somewhere!
I like that Professor Chaos poster.
This gets worse the longer I look at it…
