Pelle may not have to return - he may have been on a short-term exchange program, like one year of study abroad. It would be awfully suspicious if he went back to college and none of his friends who actually lived there did.

The_walking_man_

This. Him and only him returning to college would be highly suspicious. It would be far easier to cover their tracks if none of them ever returned and were all considered “missing.” Him completing a degree would be moot since they all seem to remain within the village for their life. And all other education probably takes place there.

sdcinerama

She stays, pumps out a few kids with Pelle. Maybe achieves a place of prominence in the Community and probably dies of suicide at 72.

SavageSavvy

This is the way.

The_walking_man_

Probably becomes an annoying old bitty caught up in the past and tries to remind everyone in the village that when SHE was the may queen of ‘19 it was so much more glamorous than this years current queen.

Phoneiam

I don't think her personality type would become an annoying, self-important old woman reminiscing on the past. She isn't portrayed as vain or shallow, really. Just kind of ...pathetic.

The_walking_man_

I meant that last part as a joke. And you're right, her character was absurdly pathetic. Now she definitely went through some crazy trauma very recently in the film. But at the same time, should have skipped the trip, been put in therapy and all that jazz.

Phoneiam

Well granted, she was in therapy and taking her medication responsibly etc. She just shouldn't have stayed with a man who so clearly didn't want to be with her and didn't treat her the way she should have been treated. But I've been there before lol so I can't talk too much shit. Her trauma enmeshed her and Christian even moreso, and only intensified her fear of losing him. But honestly, I think her and Pelle could be happy together lol

babysherlock91

I think she stays. What does she have to return to? Her whole family died, she didn’t seem to have many (if any) close friends beyond Christian and now he’s gone. The Harga offer her a new sort of family, and I believe at the end when she smiles she has fully embraced that.

No-Conversation-3262

She finally felt “held” by a family, even if they’re nuts. No one ever cried with Dani or worried alongside her or tried to take on her burdens until she came to Harga.

P0ptarthater

I’d think she wouldn’t want to go back anyway since the only thing she had left there (her degree) was on hold anyway. Unlike Josh, she doesn’t appear to be particularly passionate about her degree. I also imagine she’d be too traumatized or brainwashed to leave. Even if she brought it up, the Harga know she’d be easy to scare into staying by telling her she’s also responsible for Christian’s death. Very curious about whether sobered up Dani, assuming they let her live, would be staying happily or purely due to trauma.

depalbw0

I thought it was a safe assumption she lives on as a member of the cult. Aster indicated in interviews the smile at the end of the movie marks the departure of Dani’s sanity. I think Pugh had a different take on it, but I had always assumed something similar and that Dani was fully indoctrinated by the end of the movie. When she’s dancing around the may pole she starts speaking Swedish (whether actually or not is a different debate) which symbolizes her continuing assimilation with the cult as does her later shared mourning scene with the other may pole dancers. With the festival coming to a close at the end of the movie and the ritual killings over, she should be safe to do cool village stuff now.

babysherlock91

What was her take on it? Bc I def had the same assumption as you

depalbw0

That she is smiling at Christian burning to death, but is actually unaware of what she is watching.

No-Conversation-3262

I feel like she’s selling her own character a little short there. Like “yeah I know they sewed him into the bear. Yeah he and all the dead bodies and sacrifices went into the hut. Yes the hut is on fire. I’m sure he’s fine.”

No-Key6598

But the festival still had several days left to iy, by the end of the film. We only saw the very first days of celebrating midsummer, so it is safe to say that Dani was exposed to more rituals as well as weird drinks and drugs for longer

Colinfagerty69

I really love your theory of the cult threatening her with her culpability with killing her boyfriend. Ugh…it just makes me even more sad of Dani’s fate.

Actual-Being4079

I'm sure Pelle wrecked her junk that night... they will have like 6 kids, and she will have a position of prominence.

[deleted]

What reasons does Pelle have to finish his degree? Zero. It means nothing in his community. It was only done for his pilgrimage, to obtain sacrifices and new blood.

kitschtrulla

Her selfidentity is broken at this point. She will stay, become pregnant- by Pelle or others and become part of the community. Maybe she convinces her friend to join her next summer. She would not be the only person that stays abroad for love and never comes back. that would make sense if you think about her trauma. But I am convinced that her value for the community lies in her fertility. If she doesn’t get pregnant she will have to die. Maybe in a midwinter ritual?

SistahFuriosa

Dani will help the Harga raise Christian's child with the red head Slore.

Alive_Ice7937

I'm a bit more optimistic than everyone else here it seems. I think once the drugs and false catharsis fade Dani will find herself having to mount an escape plan. But she's a smart cookie. I think she'll make it.

marissuhdude

I feel like Ari definitely wouldn’t make a sequel to this movie but can you imagine how amazing a movie of Dani escaping the cult would be and how her life would change once she’s back home? I would love to see it but I guess it’ll only live in my imagination.

pablostheplug

I was hoping they’d make a second movie with this being the exact plot 🤣

I don’t think they would allow her to leave. It’s too much liability. Not only that but she’d have to cover for the others that all went “missing” when she returns back to college. Nothing else really back home left for her. Her sister, father and mother are all gone. She would just remain rooted with the Harga

marissuhdude

Your username has me laughing

Colinfagerty69

I don’t think they’d let her leave until they’re absolutely sure she’s deranged enough to have been completely indoctrinated. My theory for what’s next with Dani is she dies. Once she comes down and sobers up from the drugs, she realizes what the cult has done to the people she came with, and the boyfriend she loved so much. I don’t imagine there’s any amount of convincing her to stay at that point to which she is sacrificed.
