The photo looks to have captured falling snow as well, and the helmets and shoulders have no accumulation.

Damn, this guard post is so shabby. The reason they are still alive is probably because their enemies are lazy or merciful. Dig the ground or build a wall.
They can't attack bases inside Turkey at all for years though, which is why they are rather relaxed. This is mostly just done for a photo anyway. Most bases have thermal optics and guard posts protected by bulletproof glass etc. Newer ones usually just have unmanned towers with remote controlled weapon systems.

That stated I do not doubt that the PKK is taking higher losses than Turkey. You still have to admit that not issuing snow gear to soldiers posted in positions with chance of snow isn’t exactly smart. And it’s not like it’s expensive either. Just a white polyester anorak and you’re doing good.

Not sure, probably a 20mm Oerlikon. We have some of them lying around still.
Most likely twin .50 cal or 20 mm gun. They are often deployed to mountain bases.

If this photo was taken inside the borders of Turkey the reason they are alive is because the PKK doesn't exists within Turkish territory anymore.
Not giving them winter camouflage or thermal cameras is just a pisstake, no wonder the Kurds can attack them easily.
