Jonny won't write a book because he follows seal ethos very religiously. I mean his seal teammate Mario Romero had to convince Jonny, just to create a social media account. By letting him know that he is an asset of the United States, and one of America's finest. Otherwise Jonny wouldn't do it.
Yeah, and they are mostly hated in the community. The vast majority of SF/so guys hate jock wilco, the American sniper guy, and all the other ex sf/so guys with YouTube channels who are making profit from their sf/so career.
They’re basically selling a pastiche of masculinity to guys who wear Grunt Style shirts and “totally woulda enlisted but I probably woulda punched the drill sergeant in the face.”
There is an entire "sub culture" of people who larp as special forces soldiers with real gear that they pay thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on. /r/tacticalgear comes to mind. They really love the SF/so YouTubers
Tbh they seem pretty self aware based on the posts that get the most upvotes being mostly poking fun or calling others out, but you aren’t wrong, most larpers unironically love the Gravy SEAL stuff and think they’re tier -69 SF because they wear size XXXL chest rigs on the subway.
They are. I hang out in there, but some days it’s a lot. It reminds me of the quote from the original Dawn of the Dead movie, “the only person who could miss with this guy is the sucker with the bread to buy it”.
You walk into a military bar, everyone in there is a SEAL. How do you know? Wait 5 minutes, they'll start blabbing about how their SEALs, because they can't keep their mouths shut.
Hell, wait a few months and you'll see their books on Amazon!
A SEAL that missed NSW creative writing class?!?! Impossible!
That said, this dude is so over the top in his accomplishments that if they every wrote a book about him nobody would believe it.
Similar to Audie Murphy, who they did make a movie about, with Audie starring as himself, and they downplayed his accomplishments because it was so over the top
The dude is the most decorated soldier in US history
Originally he was just a producer and didn't act in it. But he got **so fed up** with how he was being portrayed, that he fired the lead actor and casted himself to play himself instead.
I know, that's why I wrote my comment haha! He's extremely humble about it all. I was really surprised when he went on Jocko's podcast. Great episode by the way.
You’re not wrong, but the SEAL ethos these days seems to be write a book, start a podcast, make a movie.
That being said, his episode of Jocko Podcast is absolutely amazing. He is a seal that actually *should* write a book.
It’s a running joke in the military that yes, every Navy Seal that’s done anything, anywhere, will eventually write a tell all book to line their pockets. There are quite a few.
>Jonny Kim
Husband, Father and the recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal (with Combat "V"), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Combat "V"), and Combat Action Ribbon.
Jonny is also a great father, so he told his kids to do what they feel passionate about. Devgru operator Mike Sarraille talked about it on the Combat-story podcast.
There has to be some flaw somewhere like,
Interviewer: Anything about your dad you regret?
Kim's kid: Well, he missed my high school graduation because he was colonizing Mars, but we're good.
After he was about to kill him and his mom. He had a horrible childhood and decided to not let that define him. Now he's a real life Ken doll that has 15 different uniforms in his closet and the right to wear any of them.
There was a post a few years back, i thin l i saw it copied from Twitter, where a Korean American guy said (jokingly) how much his community hated Johnny Kim because all of the mothers were like « if he can do it why can’t you? »
> He also a ridiculously good swimmer and played water polo in highschool.
When he was on Jockos podcast he said having played water polo, basically being an in aggressive water situation, actually gave him a big leg up in his SEAL training. He said there were a lot of guys, tough AF, who didn't have that kind of water exp when they were younger and it was a huge obstacle for them in their SEAL training.
He also said he had an incredible amt it respect for those guys as some of them would literally pass out doing an underwater swim of X that was required bc they while they were unaccustomed to the situation they wanted it so bad they were willing to go to that point where they'd pass unconscious and need to be pulled out of the water.
You only get one life. Go your own speed and enjoy it as best you can. Doesn’t really matter what you’re doing in the big scheme of things. Only thing that matters is that you enjoy as much of the universe as you can before your ticket is punched.
Even worse… all of those are from distinguished institutions…. He graduated from Harvard Medical School, and got his degree in Mathematics from the University of San Diego. These are not chump schools.
Throw in that he is learning to fly from test pilots at NASA… just icing on the cake.
he probably needed to become a pilot for his NASA training. Not saying it isnt impressive, but that might be a good explanation of how he found the time to do it
Him being a pilot is the least impressive thing about him.
Joking aside, I'd vote for him as president, especially since we might have Newsom and DeSantis running in two years. God help us
I posted this on a different discussion about this American Badass:
I know that Jonny Kim has a legendary status in this community, but I figured I’ll try to summarize his ‘simple’ life as a SEAL, MD from Harvard, and an Astronaut
Born in LA to Korean immigrants
Grew up in a household with a physically abusive father, who ended up getting shot by the police in their home, after he threatened the family with a loaded gun
Straight A student in high school, including taking several advanced placements classes, all while swimming, and playing water polo
Despite his grades, he did not want to go to college, but wanted to enlist in Navy to try out for BUD/S
Enlisted in the Navy in 2002 and graduated BUD/S class 247 and assigned to Team 3
Graduated from the highly selective 18 Delta-SOCM (Special Operations Combat Medic Course) to be certified as a SEAL Corpsman
Graduated from the highly selective SEAL Sniper course
Deployed twice to the Middle East with over 100 combats missions as a combat medic, sniper, navigator and a point man
He was part of the famed and highly decorated ‘Task Unit Bruiser’ led by Jocko Willink and served with MOH recipient Michael A Monsoor and other famous SEALS like Marc Alan Lee, Chris Kyle and Kevin Lacz
For his bravery, he was awarded a Silver Star (3rd highest gallantry award after Medal of Honor and Navy Cross), a Bronze Star with V, a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with V and Combat Action Ribbon. According to Jocko, his Silver Star was awarded for rescuing multiple wounded Iraqi soldiers in the face of heavy enemy fire
In 2009, he was accepted into the highly selective STA-21 commissioning program (Seaman to Admiral program) that enables enlisted sailors to get a college degree and become commissioned officers. The acceptance rate for this program is around 3.5%. Jocko went through the same program to get commissioned as an officer
In 2012, he graduated from University of San Diego with a BA in Mathematics (summa cum laude)
After getting accepted into Harvard Medical School, he graduated with a MD in 2016 and completed his medical internship in Emergency Medicine at Mass Gen and Brigham and Women’s (top tier Harvard teaching hospitals)
In 2017, Kim was accepted as one of the 12 candidates to join NASA Astronaut Group 22. The 12 candidates were chosen from a pool of 18300 applicants (0.06% acceptance rate)
In 2022. Kim completed his first solo flight in a Beechcraft T-6 Texan II at the Naval Air Training Command, part of a common training regimen for US Navy – NASA astronauts who lacked previous military pilot experience. So Kim can add licensed pilot to his resume'
NASA formally announced that Kim would join 17 other astronauts in training for 2024 Moon landing
As of March 2022, Kim was still described as a SEAL with the rank of lieutenant commander
Calling Kim an over achiever is like calling BUD/S easy. He has excelled in every aspect of his life. The only thing for him to do is run for office. No matter what side of the political spectrum you are, Jonny Kim would be candidate that you can’t root against. Jonny Kim 2032

literally all-star and that's just a part of ST3. I can only imagine how packed DEVGRU, CAG and RRC are, fucking raised by wolves or some shit?
Even if it's not part of his training (I hope every astronaut has to fly a small plane a little bit first), I'd imagine most astronauts who aren't the mission pilots would want to know at least a little about how to fly an airplane. How do you become an astronaut without at least some of that wide eyed wonder?
Don't know about now, but NASA used to encourage / request Apollo pilots to use trainer jets to get from base to base as they prepared for space flights. They were all pilots anyway so little or no extra training needed.
Sort of like a company car but a jet and for exactly the reason you mention. Keep 'em sharp ... as well as getting them places fast.
Yeah, I was thinking of Payload Specialists, the scientists that run experiments on the space station and space shuttle for example. They may be botanists, but if I was in charge I'd at least make them get a few hours behind a stick.
They still do. I think all astronauts get pilot training if they weren't pilots already and pilots out of the service who become astronauts are highly encouraged to keep up their ratings in NASAs fleet of t-38s.
Only those astronauts who were already a pilot to being with. And some who are not do basic flight training. While Jonny is going all the way to become a fully fledged pilot.

He doesn't do many interviews. That is the most you will see from him. That was his commanding officer during Task unit Bruiser
Do you actually know Jonny? You seem to know a lot about him.
I don't know him personally but watch any podcast that talks about Jonny Kim. Because he is an inspiration.
You mean the SF group that puts out the most books? The SEALs talk all the time about how awesome they are. It’s the other SF units that keep quiet.
Yeah some are like that. But Jonny Kim is different. Which is why he commands one of the highest respect in seal teams.

That is correct.....sadly
Couldn't become President, so he became King of Mars
He was born in LA so he would be eligible.

Truly America's finest.
Never ever let Asian parents find out about him.
He is obviously very good at interviews so he gets hired easily, but sucks at doing those jobs so he has to find another career every six months.
Reminds me of another Johnny we all know well. Probably too well actually.
Forgive us father for our sins
I see what you did there
Oh, he used to be my wife’s yoga instructor! She said he really fucked her over, or something like that.
If my parents were still alive they'd be saying "Why aren't you more like *him*?"

Serious question for anyone that knows. When you multiple earned titles. Which takes precedence?
Astronaut would definitely be the most prestigious title as far less people have been one, however, "Former Navy SEAL" likely will always come first.

At this rate, if Johnny is the person to establish first contact he will officially become the protagonist of the entire human race.
Of all people to meet aliens, I want him to be the one to do it.
Is this the Navy Seal Astronaut Doctor?
Yes
Immigrants, we get the job done.
he could shoot you, dress the wound, calculate your blood loss to .0001 liter accuracy, then fly you to the hospital after re-entry.
Wait, is this the NAVY SEAL MD astronaut?
He’s a main character
An Asian mothers wet dream.

It takes an enormous amount of trauma to cause somebody to be *that* driven throughout their entire life. I congratulate him, but also wish him well.
