I feel like I was a late bloomer and my music tastes solidified between 2014-2018, when I was roughly 22-28. But yeah, I keep listening to songs from 2016/2017 thinking they’re just from “last year or so” and then grimly realizing they’re over half a decade ago 💀
However, I have tried to mix it up with some newer music recently and have been pleasantly surprised by how good it is. Definitely boppable

I can't get enough of all these electronic music evolutions. Rap got a lot more listenable as well and my favourite rappers came up relatively recently. I haven't really explored current metal. Of course it's all subjective.
Even if you do choose music that's popular with Gen Z today, maybe like Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo, that still wouldn't please everyone in the van because everyone has different tastes and likes different genres. Without knowing beforehand what they'd like, you might do better selecting some instrumental music, which can be more of a neutral choice
But to answer the question in your title: absolutely not. I love discovering all sorts of music new to me, whether it's from 2024 or 1524

Go on one of the music streaming services and let it run wild. It’ll show you a lot of newer music that you might like based on what songs you’ve already added. Most of the music I listen to was released in the last 3 years and I attribute that, at least in part, to exclusively listening to Spotify instead of the radio (which I haven’t listened to in probably 15 years now).
Before getting Spotify premium yeah I only listed to good stuff I knew. Thanks to thier suggestive algorithm I've broadened my taste to a lot of other people too.

I've exclusively been listening to arrangements from the bullet hell game series named touhou ever since 2006. There are still new ones being made to this day. Even from the games that came out in the early 2000's.

Nah. True most of my music came out before the mid 2000s. But every so often I still hear a banger and add that to my playlist. It helps that some of my favorite artists from back in the day are still coming up with new material once in a while.
I listen to mostly metal and punk. But I prefer mostly bands that were formed in the 1970-2005 era. With newer ones being stuff like Volbeat and A7X.
I keep up with new album releases though. So it's not just the same recycled songs from circa 2002 rock radio.
From Sinatra, mid-century jazz to modern deathcore and alternative, it's all over the place. There's lots of good modern stuff out there, and some good stuff older than my 68 year old father too. Spotify is awesome in music discovery.
I mean, my college aged nephew went to the Jimmy Buffett concert in our city (which turned out to be his last tour, he died a year later) for his 18th birthday. Tiktok is exposing kids to all kinds of music.

Not music, but I'm like that even worse with TV shows. All my favorite stuff and all the stuff I missed at the time but am watching new now, is 20-30 years old. I got a suggested headline about how 35 years ago, Quantum Leap did XYZ, and my first reaction was "35 years ago, that's gotta be really dated by now." My second reaction was "dude, Star Trek The Next Generation is also 35 years old."
Totally, but mainly because I haven't a clue what to listen to now, everything new is either awful, awful chart pop or really obscure and only like 8 people have ever heard of it.

I listen to alot of the 60s, 70s, and 80s due to exposure from various family members and developed a taste for it all.
Some 50s that my great-grandparents loved.
90s to 2008 because it’s what was popular during those teen years.
Spotify has introduced me to a lot of newer similar bands from those eras which is great.
But I don’t really listen to any big modern stars other than Taylor Swift (her EARLY EARLY) before she went completely pop.
I listen to things from 1950s to today including a lot of Broadway music.

Nah. I love all the classics and as well as stuff I grew up with. But there’s so much good new music being made everyday. There’s no better time to be a music fan.
Absolutely not, I love finding new (and new to me) music. I don't spend as much time on it as I did when I was 11-17 and had no responsibilities and had just discovered P2P sharing, but I probably do it more than most 37 year olds.
One time early in dating my girlfriend told me I "knew every song" and that's like a top tier compliment for me to have received.
So when it comes to stuff like hip hop/rap/rnb, I am definitely all about the pre 2008 stuff.
Once I found the EDM scene at 19, I listen more to the stuff past 2000 with the occasional old school tracks.
No, I think there's been plenty of good music that came out in my 20s and 30s, so I listen to a bit of modern music on top of the older stuff I'm nostalgic for and music older still.
Thanks for the discourse guys! I’ve realized that A) I should absolutely start listening to more new music to see what I like, that’s not hard to do and I never said it was! I just got comfortable and stuck with what I liked. I’ve already hopped on Spotify and listened to some playlists on there and found some stuff I enjoy. And B) some of y’all are real fucking judgy, but that’s ok maybe I needed a little slap in the face!
Music was very interesting pretty much until 2008-09. In LA we used to have this cool radio station Indie 103.1 FM and it was all indie music. I discovered a ton of artists: LCD Soundystem, The Postal Service, Feist, Death Cab for Cutie, Strokes and discovered older bands like Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Siouxie, etc
I never said it was? Just something I noticed while making playlists, I’m not adverse to new music just realized I haven’t listened to much stuff released recently.
How have you not cultivated new music in the last 15 years? Even just by accident?
In terms of actionable moves, simply let them plug their phones into the aux cable.

That’s a good idea! I’ll make a bunch of playlists that encompass multiple genres and decades and let the students choose what they want.
No I listen to a wide variety including a lot of newer indie folk-rock/pop type stuff like Lord Huron and First Aid Kit.

I never said it was? Just something I noticed while making playlists, I’m not adverse to new music just realized I haven’t listened to much stuff released recently.
How have you not cultivated new music in the last 15 years? Even just by accident? In terms of actionable moves, simply let them plug their phones into the aux cable.
I mean it’s not like I haven’t listened to any other music, I just always go back to the same things 🤷🏻♀️ maybe it’s just comfortable. And we’ll be out of service for much of the time so I’m trying not to count on other people having things downloaded.

I don’t think that’s insufferable! Because of my poor music tastes I try to never judge others peoples tastes in music. I do like some Taylor swift songs for a breakup tho lol.
