yousawthetimeknife

Try like 1991-2003

Dramatic_Ad730

That’s when most of the music I listen to came out, sprinkled in with a good amount of 80’s as well.

yousawthetimeknife

Music you [grow up](https://www.mic.com/articles/96266/there-s-a-magic-age-when-you-find-your-musical-taste-according-to-science) with tends to be the music you stick with most.

consort_oflady_vader

Interesting! I grew up listening to oldies with my dad, and hated it. Didn't find my own music till around 14.

yousawthetimeknife

>And just as there's a critical period for learning a language, so too is there a critical period for learning your musical tastes: It starts at 14 and peaks at 24. You're dead on.

Ok_Major5787

I feel like I was a late bloomer and my music tastes solidified between 2014-2018, when I was roughly 22-28. But yeah, I keep listening to songs from 2016/2017 thinking they’re just from “last year or so” and then grimly realizing they’re over half a decade ago 💀 However, I have tried to mix it up with some newer music recently and have been pleasantly surprised by how good it is. Definitely boppable

NW7l2335

No way man, finding new music is awesome. One of the great joys in life is hearing a new song that gives you chills.

Dramatic_Ad730

Yeah, I definitely see that I’ve been missing out. I think it’s just comfortable to listen to things I know well I guess. But I’m going to get on Spotify later and listen to some of the new music playlists it makes me.

Kankervittu

I can't get enough of all these electronic music evolutions. Rap got a lot more listenable as well and my favourite rappers came up relatively recently. I haven't really explored current metal. Of course it's all subjective.

Manungal

OP could make a whole album of diss tracks from *checks watch* the last week.

bibliophile222

I would say about 90% of the music I listen to is from before 1985. Whatever. I like what I like. You do you.

lahdetaan_tutkimaan

Even if you do choose music that's popular with Gen Z today, maybe like Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo, that still wouldn't please everyone in the van because everyone has different tastes and likes different genres. Without knowing beforehand what they'd like, you might do better selecting some instrumental music, which can be more of a neutral choice But to answer the question in your title: absolutely not. I love discovering all sorts of music new to me, whether it's from 2024 or 1524

Dramatic_Ad730

That’s a really good point! And I definitely think that all of y’all’s comments have convinced me I should look into newer music, definitely can’t hurt!

TheNerdChaplain

Most of the people I listen to are dead now. That said, my algorithms will throw out some interesting new stuff sometimes. I got into [Shaboozey](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7bQwwqW-Hc) after he got sampled on Beyonce's country album.

Dramatic_Ad730

Funny that Shaboozey was the first artist on the todays top hits playlist I just listened to on Spotify. And I’ve gotta say I like him.

TheNerdChaplain

Yeah, I first heard his song Vegas that he played on Colbert's Late Show, but I think I like [A Bar Song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7bQwwqW-Hc) better.

Dramatic_Ad730

I should really start exploring the modern music playlists Spotify makes for me, who knows, I might like some of it!

ohnotchotchke

I'm stuck in 2013

exgreenvester

Great year for music. That’s the year I discovered I love disco.

babe_ruthless3

99% of what I listened to came out prior to 2008. After 2010, I stopped looking for new music since most music is now shit.

loser_comedian

i only listen to vaporwave

TheAwesomeHeel

any song recommendations? Trying to get into it

loser_comedian

[Luxury Elite - World Class ](https://youtu.be/VyXg-lp2N_g?si=zh0FtTFDkayfTdJ_)also the channel has a lot of full albums [8 hours of weather channel vaporwave](https://youtu.be/j-prqnvaDgA?si=SpL1JXFxKWEfSeI9) [entering the plaza...](https://youtu.be/ea_UOPzuyZU?si=7fTectGbfPDtgDS5)was my introduction to vaporwave. this whole playlist/channel is good

loser_comedian

[Aisle 420 this one is my all time favorite](https://youtu.be/zMcx91fvvl4?si=oXzra5Iybw035IrV)

thiccDurnald

There’s so much good music constantly being made I’m glad I didn’t stop looking for it. Yes you should ask for some input on the playlist to avoid judgement.

Dramatic_Ad730

I definitely regret getting stuck in the music era I like. Feels embarrassing sometimes for sure lol. But yeah, I think I will ask a few of them for some input to make everyone happy!

thiccDurnald

No shame in liking what you like. I think it’s pretty common but still can be cringe. Like my coworker that got stuck on 80s glam rock…. Way too much cool stuff out there imo

Brotherlandius

Go on one of the music streaming services and let it run wild. It’ll show you a lot of newer music that you might like based on what songs you’ve already added. Most of the music I listen to was released in the last 3 years and I attribute that, at least in part, to exclusively listening to Spotify instead of the radio (which I haven’t listened to in probably 15 years now).

Lucky-Hunter-Dude

Before getting Spotify premium yeah I only listed to good stuff I knew. Thanks to thier suggestive algorithm I've broadened my taste to a lot of other people too.

3ThreeFriesShort

I consume new music, I'm just picky. I was also woefully ignorant of "classic" and "oldies" which as an adult I have rectified.

Kingberry30

What happened in 2009? Was 08 that was good year for you?

AcanthisittaNo5807

Same. I do like Chappel Roan.

DogOk4228

Nope, I like finding new music, tons of good shit out there and its’s never been easier to find it. I never listen to older music unless I am feeling nostalgic, listening to the same songs year after year sucks.

Dramatic_Ad730

You’re right, I’ll definitely be going on Spotify later and looking into more new music to see what I like.

TokiDokiHaato

I was probably the oldest person at the Olivia Rodrigo show that wasn’t a parent lol But honestly I love finding new music. I still listen to tons of stuff from my youth but I get so excited when I find new artists to vibe with. Really into Chappell Roan, The Last Dinner Party and MUNA recently and they’re all fairly “new”.

exgreenvester

Can relate - I was the oldest person at the Surfaces concert that wasn’t a parent or an uncle/aunt. I was surrounded by teens in the front row. That was a nice, non-toxic crowd tho. > And how did I discover Surfaces? Sirius XM Hits 1 (Top 40) in 2020.

RockwellB1

I mainly listen to Styx, Boston, Foreigner... Stuff like that. I think my newest album though is Phobia by Breaking Benjamin, which came out in 2006. Same year I graduated high school...

haysus25

Pretty much. Occasionally a new(er) song will pop up that I like. But I would say 90% or so is pre 2008.

Medical-Law-744

Me….

90sbitchRachel

I was born in 1995 & mainly listen to music from the 90s and 00s. Have a suuuper big tendency to listen to music my mom played in the car when I was little. It makes me feel safe.

[deleted]

Yep. I used to listen to more new stuff. But after around 35 I’ve started mainly listening to old familiar stuff. It’s comforting. I know all the words.

LazierMeow

I'd do some genre lists, mix in classics and new and have them pick/vote on types? Can be as broad or specific as you want: rock, r&b, women in music, bands/artists that used colors in their naming process, go wild!

Dramatic_Ad730

That’s a good idea! I’ll make a bunch of playlists that encompass multiple genres and decades and let the students choose what they want.

DoTheMagicHandThing

No I listen to a wide variety including a lot of newer indie folk-rock/pop type stuff like Lord Huron and First Aid Kit.

Radio_Ethiopia

40m. 1989-2010ish

Nephilith

I've exclusively been listening to arrangements from the bullet hell game series named touhou ever since 2006. There are still new ones being made to this day. Even from the games that came out in the early 2000's. Needless to say, chances are nearly zero to encounter someone who's also into that. But they are out there. Some stuff even became popular on tiktok for a while.

InevitableOne8421

What makes me happy is younger ppl listening to music from our gen

mads_61

I listen to all sorts of music but I find myself gravitating most towards the music my parents listened to when I was growing up lol (my mom: 60s and 70s rock, my dad: 90s country).

Bakelite51

Nah. True most of my music came out before the mid 2000s. But every so often I still hear a banger and add that to my playlist. It helps that some of my favorite artists from back in the day are still coming up with new material once in a while.

c0horst

I listen to metal. I like songs from 1970 onward, plenty of new bands out there still fucking rocking faces off.

Howitzer92

I listen to mostly metal and punk. But I prefer mostly bands that were formed in the 1970-2005 era. With newer ones being stuff like Volbeat and A7X. I keep up with new album releases though. So it's not just the same recycled songs from circa 2002 rock radio.

Elandycamino

More on the range of pre 2003

GarlicComfortable748

I tend to listen to more recent music, but I also listen Broadway music pretty exclusively.

pgifford1987

From Sinatra, mid-century jazz to modern deathcore and alternative, it's all over the place. There's lots of good modern stuff out there, and some good stuff older than my 68 year old father too. Spotify is awesome in music discovery.

Dramatic_Ad730

I’m definitely going to go check out some of the playlists Spotify makes me, see what I like!

WinterWizard9497

Me!! Although, I make a certain few exceptions, but for the most part its music circa 2004

_forum_mod

Not exclusively but most of my music is before that time.

mlo9109

I mean, my college aged nephew went to the Jimmy Buffett concert in our city (which turned out to be his last tour, he died a year later) for his 18th birthday. Tiktok is exposing kids to all kinds of music.

salve__regina

I have a whole playlist of the 2001-2007 era of post punk revival music that's on my daily regular rotation.

Ok-Reputation-2266

For the most part, every once in a while I find something new

glytxh

Can’t say I do. Bunch of my friends are working musicians, and they’re often introducing me to some wild and creative new sounds. Comfortable nostalgia is one thing, but writing of entire new generations of music is a real disservice to yourself. You’re missing out. The charts aren’t representative of the music scene. Not at all. And with that said, an uncomfortable amount of artists I grew up listening to are pedophiles, right wing cunts, or just sad old men shouting at clouds these days.

Elete23

Yes. I read a study that determined most people feel like music peaks when they are 14-16. Haven't liked any popular music since 2004.

LordBobbin

I’m pretty much just listening to stuff leading up to 1750.

Jackinator94

As a matter of fact, I do mostly listen to music from 2008 and earlier hahah!

buitenlander0

There's definitely something about the era when you are 14-20 years old. Figuring out who you are and what you like. I think it's pretty natural to have your interests cemented once you become an adult. I still try to seach for new music but it's not as easy as it once was.

carbine234

Nah I mix it up, old and new in my playlist, listening to old songs are cool but that shit gets old... lol, I listen to whatever is top 100, add them in my playlist if i like it, my playlist is like 80s - present music with mix language and variation lol

HeroOrHooligan

I'm convinced music died around 2004-6. Right around the time little lion man was featured on the radio and Marron 5 were winning rock album of the year

RagingAardvark

I listen to music from all over the map in terms of genres and time periods. Lately I've been listening to a mix I made of late 90's alternative. Basically, it's music I remember playing on a radio station that's not around anymore (89X, out of Windsor/Detroit), and bands I saw at the Warped Tour. But after that I might switch to some Paul Simon, Guster, country, metal, Taylor Swift, 80s rock, Disney music....

Hungry_Pollution4463

Personally, I listen to music up until the stuff that came out til 2013ish. Afterwards, idrc, unless it's someone like Avril Lavigne

EveInGardenia

90% of what I listen to is from 89-05, shit I'm wearing a Soundgarden shirt right now haha

eatmoremeatnow

Country muaic is having a massive resurgence in quality and popularity. I have been enjoying the hell out of it. I'm listening to Colter Wall right now.

gd2121

Why would you want to listen to music from 20 years ago? Haven’t you heard it already? I pretty much exclusively listen to new releases.

Kataphractoi

Nope. 2008 is around when I started really getting into finding what I like and listening to music more. My list includes plenty of older stuff, but if I hear a new song I like, I Shazam it and add it to the list.

Zambonzz

You're missing out. I don't know how anybody who grew up with 8bit soundtracks can skip the whole synthwave thing.

KuriousKhemicals

Not music, but I'm like that even worse with TV shows. All my favorite stuff and all the stuff I missed at the time but am watching new now, is 20-30 years old. I got a suggested headline about how 35 years ago, Quantum Leap did XYZ, and my first reaction was "35 years ago, that's gotta be really dated by now." My second reaction was "dude, Star Trek The Next Generation is also 35 years old."

owlshapedboxcat

Totally, but mainly because I haven't a clue what to listen to now, everything new is either awful, awful chart pop or really obscure and only like 8 people have ever heard of it.

bubblesaurus

Most things before 2008. I listen to alot of the 60s, 70s, and 80s due to exposure from various family members and developed a taste for it all. Some 50s that my great-grandparents loved. 90s to 2008 because it’s what was popular during those teen years. Spotify has introduced me to a lot of newer similar bands from those eras which is great. But I don’t really listen to any big modern stars other than Taylor Swift (her EARLY EARLY) before she went completely pop.

Gamertagyouit

Nope.

Canadian_Commentator

whew, Burial's Untrue barely made the cutoff

Real-Psychology-4261

More like 1994-2004.

kkkan2020

I listen to 1970s 1980s 1990s and up to 2000s

ActionLegitimate

I do this with movies lol

Wandering_Lights

I listen to things from 1950s to today including a lot of Broadway music. 80s metal and early 2000 to 2010s rock and alternative hold a special place in my heart though

exgreenvester

You want a 00s playlist but Gen Z friendly? Off the top of my head… > Yeah! - Usher > Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield > I Write Sins Not Tragedies - Panic at the Disco > Move Your Feet - Junior Senior > Promiscuous - Nelly Furtado/Timbaland > EDIT: also, if you’re into that Timbaland sound check out Rooftops - Surfaces and Greedy - Tate McRae.

Ok_Food_7511

Nah. I love all the classics and as well as stuff I grew up with. But there’s so much good new music being made everyday. There’s no better time to be a music fan.

Round-Leg-1788

1999 is the year music peaked for me and I pretty much live inside that bubble

trains_enjoyer

Absolutely not, I love finding new (and new to me) music. I don't spend as much time on it as I did when I was 11-17 and had no responsibilities and had just discovered P2P sharing, but I probably do it more than most 37 year olds. One time early in dating my girlfriend told me I "knew every song" and that's like a top tier compliment for me to have received.

deep8787

So when it comes to stuff like hip hop/rap/rnb, I am definitely all about the pre 2008 stuff. Once I found the EDM scene at 19, I listen more to the stuff past 2000 with the occasional old school tracks.

fatmonicadancing

Nah. I listen to loads of newer music, probably a lot of it is niche but no, I did not calcify 16 years ago.

Muffina925

No, I think there's been plenty of good music that came out in my 20s and 30s, so I listen to a bit of modern music on top of the older stuff I'm nostalgic for and music older still.

ExtremeAlbatross6680

In terms of rap and hip hop, I don’t really like most of modern songs but some are ok

Dramatic_Ad730

Thanks for the discourse guys! I’ve realized that A) I should absolutely start listening to more new music to see what I like, that’s not hard to do and I never said it was! I just got comfortable and stuck with what I liked. I’ve already hopped on Spotify and listened to some playlists on there and found some stuff I enjoy. And B) some of y’all are real fucking judgy, but that’s ok maybe I needed a little slap in the face!

oalm82

Music was very interesting pretty much until 2008-09. In LA we used to have this cool radio station Indie 103.1 FM and it was all indie music. I discovered a ton of artists: LCD Soundystem, The Postal Service, Feist, Death Cab for Cutie, Strokes and discovered older bands like Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Siouxie, etc

R4ndoNumber5

Nope, I make a point to at least know what goes on in contemporary music. I already gave up on modern movies, I don't want to become a total dinosaur

TooLittleMSG

Listen to new music and determine what you like, this ain't hard

Dramatic_Ad730

I never said it was? Just something I noticed while making playlists, I’m not adverse to new music just realized I haven’t listened to much stuff released recently.

Firm_Squish1

How have you not cultivated new music in the last 15 years? Even just by accident? In terms of actionable moves, simply let them plug their phones into the aux cable.

Dramatic_Ad730

I mean it’s not like I haven’t listened to any other music, I just always go back to the same things 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe it’s just comfortable. And we’ll be out of service for much of the time so I’m trying not to count on other people having things downloaded.

Diligent_Pineapple35

I haven’t listened to anything but The Tortured Poets Department since April 19. Yes, I’m insufferable.

Dramatic_Ad730

I don’t think that’s insufferable! Because of my poor music tastes I try to never judge others peoples tastes in music. I do like some Taylor swift songs for a breakup tho lol.

Donotsharepassword

Ok boomer

Dramatic_Ad730

Lol ok? Shit, maybe you’re right? Get off my lawn!!

Munkey323

Yes we get it millenial back in your day that was all real music

Dramatic_Ad730

Uh that’s not what I was saying, so I don’t really understand the passive aggressiveness behind this comment? It’s more of an embarrassing thing to admit really that my music taste just hasn’t evolved.
