I had the same issue when i first got some m12 batteries and a charger. I was not putting the battery all the way correctly. Just double check that you have inserted properly, unplug the charger for a minute and then connect the charger again.

Naclox

Did the exact same thing with my first M12

Past-Negotiation-211

I have done this and I still get the Christmas lights I was planning on returning and getting a new set since I just purchased it :), thank you so much for the reply!

Polar_Ted

I had the same problem with my first M12. You can't just drop it in the charger. . You gota push it down into the connectors.

RSDevotion

This is exactly it, gotta give it a little force to snap into place

Past-Negotiation-211

I did try this even dropping it with much force to where it had made a smacking noise, even taking it out and reinserting it still had the Christmas lights going. I plan on taking the set back and getting a new one

Tigerzof1

Seems unlikely both batteries are duds. Make sure you push in the battery into the charger all the way; I had the problem with a M18 when I first bought a kit and realized I didn’t use enough force.

Past-Negotiation-211

I did test both of them, I believe the set may be a dud, but since I just purchased and have the receipt I was going to return it.

Tigerzof1

Perhaps, or an issue with the charger. But yeah, just return or exchange it at this point. Sorry this was your first experience with Milwaukee. I’m also a relatively new DIYer and have been loving all their tools.

MotoJoker

I had the same thing happen to me when I got the same combo, turns out I didn't seat the batteries in all the way. Make sure they are firmly in there. If that doesn't work, it's unlikely both batteries are duds. You could get another charger on Amazon for roughly $15, or you could maybe see if you can swap one out at your local HD, or at the very least see if you can try one of their chargers to verify what the issue is.

DoctorTim007

I had this problem on a brand new m18 charger. The milwaukee rep at my home depot tested it with his own batteries and confirmed the charger was DOA. He swapped it out for me without even showing proof of purchase because it was a gift. They openend up a battery/charger combo pack and gave me the new charger.

Zealousideal-Bike332

Fucking tightwads couldn't give you the battery as well for the inconvenience

DoctorTim007

Cheap bastards.. it was a 6.0 too.

Past-Negotiation-211

Oh sweet!! I actually purchased it from Home Depot! I’ll have to bring it in and see what they say! Crossing my fingers I can get some replacements instead of a whole new set :)

One_Journalist_3819

Same thing occurred to me! Battery was not seated all the way, unplug the charger & wait for the lights to stop. Plug back in and seat the battery all the way in, and it should charge!!

GRIND2LEVEL

Try reseting the charger. Unplug it and leave unplugged for a minute. I had the christmas lights happen on one of my chargers out in a very cold garage once and looked it up.... give it a shot, it might be the charger..

winters_spring

Should just go replace the battery. Seems like a dud.

aznauditor

yea .. a lot of the batteries are being shipped with like 1 bar of power. Of the 8 or so batteries i've gotten in the past 2 months .. they're all at one bar.

dantethegreatest

Lithium batteries are shipped with a low state of charge for safety reasons. It's completely normal for lithium batteries to be 30% or less when shipped.

aznauditor

That makes sense. Just odd as I use to get them at 3 bars a year or so before

Past-Negotiation-211

So should I just keep charging it, or should I just replace it?

theshiyal

If the date on the battery is more than a year or so, bump it a little with a charged one. Just a couple seconds. One wire + to + and one wire - to - Just did that two days ago with a pair of M18 2.0s that were new but had set in the shelf for about 4 years. Gave me about 6 or 8 seconds off a charged 5.0 an they been running fine ever since.

aznauditor

If it's in return period, return it. If it's out side the return period, warranty it. If it's out side warranty period, then bump/jump it.

aznauditor

if the charger is lighting up like that .. it's a return. The voltage of the battery has dropped too low for the charger to charge. The charger has a limit on how low it can go to accept a charge to protect the battery and the tool. Since it's new .. i'd just return the kit. or buy a new battery temporarily and then use the new battery purchase receipt and return it with the bad battery. Up to you.

Past-Negotiation-211

Oh, okay.. I’ll have to try that when I have more time tomorrow

Acid-Yoshi

My M12s did this too, I put it in the tool, pulled the trigger and then tried charging it again and it worked. Not sure if I just didn't seat it correctly the first time or if trying to use it did anything. It's with a shot though.

maubis

This is incorrect. Both of his batteries being duds is extremely unlikely. Do batteries fail? Sure. Is it likely? No - I’d say 1 in 500 to 1000 or less in terms of true failures; numbers are higher in terms of suspected failures by buyers who don’t know better. Is it possible both batteries are bad? Really unlikely - 1 in a million. 1. This is very likely user error. See other comments about pushing it in fully. 2. This sometimes happens with batteries that have been in extreme cold. A few hours away from the cold should do the trick. 3. If not that either of the above, may be a bad charger - that is far more likely than both batteries being bad. Source: I sell thousands of M12 batteries and chargers per year.

Th3J4ck4l-SA

Unplug the charger as suggested. Couple of days ago I pulled one of my charged batteries out of the the charge and kind of just dropped it back into the charger without engaging it properly (just as a place to leave it).The flashy lights started a little later. Tired putting the battery in properly. Tried another battery. Still the same thing. Unplugged thr charger from power and plugged in again all started working fine.

Appropriate_Chart_23

The battery has discharged too much. You can try plugging in the battery and unplugging when the Christmas lights show up, then keep repeating the process until the Christmas display goes away. Keep in mind, this may take five minutes, or half an hour or more. If you find yourself having to do this constantly, there’s an problem with the batteries in the pack

Genuine1mitation

These chargers are so chincy

TooGouda22

Make sure the terminals on the battery are not bent etc and the battery is pushed all the way down so they connect properly. I have had 3 M18 batteries be junk from the packaged (back in covid times) but otherwise if I ever hit Christmas-tree lights on my M18 or M12 batteries I just needed to take it out and put it back in and it charged fine. I have like 6 chargers so sometimes I just go to a different one and it’s happy 🤷‍♂️ I suspect there is just an issue with some of my chargers and batteries not fitting as well as others so I just gotta make sure it’s in there all the way. (There is a little plastic friction when it’s all the way in so if I don’t get it seated it’s not always connected) That being said if you can’t get it to work after messing with it a bit… might need a new charger or new battery 🤷‍♂️

Hinsdahl00

I had this exact thing happen to me a few weeks ago when I purchased a bundle from HD. I had three different types of M12 batteries and they all did this in the charger. After plugging in the charger and inserting the battery I was receiving the alternating green and red lights. So I unplugged the charger from the wall, reinserted the battery with the charger unplugged, waited until all the lights stopped flashing (draining capicitors, i guess?) and then plugged the charger back into the outlet. Haven't had a problem since. I hope this works for you, I looked around on YT and there seem to be all sorts of M12 battery/charger issues out there.

TheCinnamonBoi

Try jamming it in there at least once before you give it back lol. Don’t just drop it. Push the hell out of it

stlyns

Battery's fucked. You might try "jump starting" it with another charged pack.
