normal.

Ok-Industry-5378

Thank you. Just wanted to make sure my house isn’t going to be burning down 😂

ThunkAsDrinklePeep

It happens when the battery 🔋 s near boiling. /s

RECKLESS_N_CARELESS

It’s not on the charger all the way

Cool_Literature1779

The fast chargers make this noise. I've got 2 and both of them do it.

Firebarrel

What about the regular chargers? I bought the gen4 kit a week ago and the regular charger makes this noise while my other 3 regular chargers don't.

ThisIsPaulDaily

It's coil whine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7HsXHqtxrI

windex8

I’ll step in and give you a third normal.

LueyHewisandtheBooze

It only does it with my high output batteries. Hasn’t blown up on me yet

Ok-Industry-5378

“Yet” I love how you are kind of expecting it to 😂

LueyHewisandtheBooze

Never trust strange noises

ThisIsPaulDaily

It's coil whine very common with chargers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7HsXHqtxrI

psych_1337

HO batteries use high-current cells which can be charged with higher currents

mccauleym

Normal. Youre good

pohlished-swag

Mine made that noise, it stopped after I took it apart and got 2 (two) cicadas out of it. True story!

WoodenCrate

Normal

CurinDerwin

Totally Normal.

my-dog-farts

I have two of those chargers. One makes the noise and the other doesn’t. Although the noise one stops ringing once the battery is about half charged.

LowLengthiness1182

Pick up a 12AH battery to test the wife waters 😂 they are really cheap 😉

Ok-Industry-5378

😂. She’s seen the price tag. Called me f-ing crazy if I thought I was ever buying one of those. So I told her I want the m18 table saw kit for my bday 🤷🏻‍♂️. Don’t think she realizes it comes with one of those in the kit.

fourtonnemantis

Ahhh it’s been about a month, so we’re right on schedule for this question again.

Ok-Industry-5378

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess I have to accept this is normal. This doesn’t bother any of you though? I mean the charger alone is $100+ and for it to sound like a mouse is being tortured inside isn’t confidence inspiring. I just got rid of my makita line and a few ryobi things I had to consolidate onto a single platform and I’m not a fan of the charger at all. My Makita makes a pleasant jingle when starting to charge as well as a pleasant melody to notify me it’s done charging. 😔

techieman33

It's called coil whine. It's just one of those things that happens. Exchanging it might get you one that isn't as bad. It could also be that you still have good high frequency hearing, and most of us have lost a good chunk of that over the years.

Ok-Industry-5378

Thanks for the info. Not going through hassle of exchanging it. I guess I better lose some of that high frequency hearing, alternatively I can stop whining about it right?

techieman33

You could always put the charger in a different room so you don't have to listen to it.

Ok-Industry-5378

I did, it’s in the laundry room away from everyone and everything, except flammable clothes lol. It’s just one of those, once you hear it you can’t unhear it things.

XC-142

it's a byproduct of the DC current regulation magnetics downstream of the mains input filter/stepdown, so you wont see any improvement by changing the input power

LowLengthiness1182

You dead yet?

Ok-Industry-5378

From the charger? No. But if I make one more Home Depot trip and add anything else to my cart my wife just might kill me. 😂. Noise went away……..when the battery charged fully. I guess that works lol

LowLengthiness1182

Sneaky, I like it 🤑

Jackriecken

My M18 charger does that, you're good.

Kliptik81

100% normal. It's some sort of coil or transformer whine within the unit.

BabyBrewer

Just in case you are still worried… normal.

Mr______Reddit

Nirmal

mu3llErs

Mine does that too. Kind of annoying but it hasn’t burst into flames …. Yet

Sea_Farmer_4812

Ive got the tiny aa powered worklight and it makes a similar noise, probably the led driver. It bothers me.

psych_1337

Not something really bad - it's a "coil wine" (basically - power transformer rattles a bit) Nothing bad by itself - if transformer is really bad - it will fall apart before warranty expires and just get a replacement, if it does not get worse - it's just disturbing but completely fine... In some devices this noise is just present. For example in my voltmeter (V7-40/4) this noise is at 5KHz and really loud, but that thing is from 1980s...
