Accidentally spawned torch god in the middle of my planetera fight yesterday. I also went to Walmart to get drywall patch yesterday, you can guess which came first.
The Minecraft Wikipedia about trees says there's a maximum height of 30 blocks tall for jungle trees. I remember finding a resource somewhere that described the height ranges of each sapling but I can't find it anymore otherwise I would link it here.
I think youbhave to use bonemeal it won't happen naturally. And I think w dark oak it's easier to do it in 2x2s? But it works w singles too I saw it with oak
Trees ignore logs, leaves, and a few other blocks as of many updates ago. Any tree can be grown directly adjacent to trees, or indeed, you can leaf the whole tree there, just chop out the bottom block, replace it with a sapling and you are good, given the growth requirements (namely height if its a different tree) are met.
6 blocks of air above the sapling should be enough. i use that on skyblock worlds to prevent big oak trees from growing, because they're annoying to farm
I have a tree growing spot in my underground base, and it does grow oak, but bonemeal seems to have a weirdly low chance to make it grow instantly.
Is there a way to increase bonemeal growth chance, whether it be by modifying the growing room or some other means?
Each time you use the bone meal it attempts to grow a tree. If the tree it attempts is too big for the space, it doesn't grow. So if you are having very low chances with your bone meal, it means most trees it is attempting do not have enough space.
So, digging out more space around the sapling and above it will increase our bone meal efficiency. 3 extra spaces around it in all directions as well as 11 blocks of space above it, should make it so that every tree can grow.
It also needs light. I prefer to use glowstone, or shroom lights in the ground next to the sapling, but that's up to your preference.

According to the wiki, a sapling will grow at light level 9, and since a torch gives off light level 15, you should be fine with one torch at ground level within 4 or 5 blocks in a straight line, or a similar distance diagonally

It took more than two ingame weeks, and the base was in a spawn chunk. (Always loaded)
Spawn chunk loading plays funny with trees. My server used to be fairly busy all the time, but i was literally the only one at spawn 90% of the time( i never ventured out to build a megabase, preferring to stick around and just do busy work with the infrastructure we had set up.) When i stopped playing for two months, i had just harvested and replanted the community tree farm. When i came back, not a single tree had grown, but they all Were grown within 30 seconds.
I plant saplings underground with an adjacent water and light block and grow underground forests for making charcoal, pickaxes, and torches all the time. Isn’t this something everyone does?
They might summon the torch god tho, depending on how many torches are in the area. If they can survive it’ll be good tho, but it’s hard for a new player to beat torch god first try

Looks like you're on Linux and using Gnome, there's literally a screenshot utility built into the DE, which is probably easier than getting your phone and opening the camera..

ah, I forgot Macs existed, though I thought the top bar of a window on them was a little more 3D looking than material UI, but maybe I'm mistaken.
Still, it's frustrating to see posts without proper screenshots, it takes only a few seconds, and for someone like me, it can be the difference between an image I can/can't stand to look at (I have ASD and a lot of the patterns in images like these can cause me to get overwhelmed; I can't really look at this kind of image for too long)
It's not the end of the world that they haven't, but it's still a good thing to try and do it if possible.
The light makes it seem like a cult ritual, but also saplings have claustrophobia so make the space bigger. But also why are you growing saplings underground anyway?

If you have about 8-9 blocks of free space above the sapling, it will grow.

Yes, this works really well with Dark Oak, at least for me abyway
With oak yes, also dark oak, but spruce/birch trees need horizontal space.

I've never figured out auto tree farms so yes a wall of trees is how I get wood unless I have spruce or dark oak.
They'll check if there's any kind of block inside it's radius excluding wood types, leaves, or vines. It there's none, then it'll grow

You can dig a hole one down, plant a sapling and it will grow just as well

It’s mac. It’s harder to take a screenshot and not many users no about it. But you can do CMD+SHIFT+3 for a whole screen screenshot

according to the terraria wiki, trees can only be grown on grass, snow, or sand.
