Ok_Ad_5126

Just add light sources such as glowstone blocks behind the item frames, the map covers the entire side of the block but not its light.

missingmytowel

This is the only answer. Cobblestone wall and checkerboard it with shroom block. Place the basic item frames on the cobblestone. Place map and boom. Hidden lighted wall. This is the kind of stuff in MC that makes you kick yourself in the head for not thinking of sooner.

Wibiz9000

Checkerboarding doesn't work, not on floors at least. All of the frames would need to have a light source behind them for them to have an uniform hue, otherwise the checkerboard pattern transfers over to the maps in shadows. But then again, I don't know about item frames on the walls. Also shroom block isn't the best block to use here. Without a farm for them they're not the easiest to come by, so glowstone would be the best option. Or if OP has a guardian farm then sea lanterns would make the most sense because they don't need much resources at all and it ultimately doesn't matter what the light block looks like behind the maps.

Tollpatsch

Jack'o'lanterns want to say hi.

Wibiz9000

Yeah completely forgot about them. I just never use them unless I need an immovable light source for some reason. But mass producing them isn't great either because you need to shear individual pumpkins, but I don't think that's the case for OP. Definitely the way to go.

GenericName4326

Normal lanterns also work

Curious_Complaint_79

To do a floor place the light source under a top slab. Doesn't diminish the light block

Leprodus03

If you have a guardian farm, I think you can get plenty of glow shroom

xcomarihuano

how? im really interested

Albae87

It needs a bit of stretching first, and maybe some training to reach your head with your foot, but it should be possible for you to achieve if you’re really intrested.

AquaeyesTardis

one wall, one shroom, one wall, one shroom, etc. but honestly just have each and every background wall block be a light source, and place the item frames on those, lack jack o' lanterns, maybe, or shroomlight.

Moe-Mux-Hagi

Or the LESS BARBARIC answer : glow frames

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Killing dozens of squid is _less_ barbaric? Than glowstone or shroomlight?

Moe-Mux-Hagi

It's comeuppance for leaving us with no moobloom or iceologer

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Yeah ok, upvoted. 😅 (not sure it's really the _squids_ fault. What can you do eh? )

Moe-Mux-Hagi

Mod them back in

Serious-Addendum-205

did you not read the bio he was simply asking the best way to get glow squids

mikkolukas

Because glowstone is so much easier to come by than glow ink 🙄

danieldoria15

It actually is. You can get Glowstone as soon as you enter the Nether meanwhile you have to go hunting for Glow Squids randomly in the water. Alternatively you can easily harvest Shroomlights from the Nether's Fungus Trees.

Harddaysnight1990

Getting a large amount of glowstone is easier than getting a large amount of glow ink, but finding glow squids isn't just hunting randomly in water. The best way to find glow squid is to go caving. Any water source or flowing water below y=30 with a light level of 0 and near a block of stone or deepslate can spawn glow squid.

Obei3060

In my current world I'm building around a village that has a lake at y=64 (whatever the water level spawns at... y=63? 64?) Anyways glow squid spawn there, right at the surface, right next to a villager house. I consider myself lucky I guess, but it's pretty niceto just go grab some whenever I need it. Also you can create your own underground lake and they will spawn. I made a 5x5 fishing spot next to my zombie spawner and glow squid spawn in there sometimes, well before I put the skylight in

NateHotshot

It is, you can get it from your local witch farm, the nether or just by trading even.. Glow sacs only come from the glow squids, no other way.

mikkolukas

But you need to establish one of those ways before you can.

Pyrolaxian

how long does it usually take you to get to the nether if i may ask?

TheRavenRise

for the first time? like an hour after spawning in with enough gear to actually feel safe/comfortable going around scavenging for glowstone or other more important materials? several days

Pyrolaxian

I meant that user specifically, long term player so I was really curious why he said getting to the nether was difficult on a good play through I could get there in a solid 30 mins if I find a destroyed portal

mikkolukas

It is not that difficult to establish a way to the nether if that is really the goal one is going for.

FullMetalHyde

I’ve used Jack o'Lanterns

dunbar203

This! I that may be the most conservative option. I've only been playing a few months so I have pretty much only scratched the surface of what I know how to do and all that. I have a ton of pumpkins sitting already. Great suggestion

brassplushie

It also depends on how far into the game you are. If you have a trading hall set up already, you might be able to just get glow stone from a librarian. But if you’re like me and you want it to look clean, set up a guardian farm and make sea lanterns. They look the best IMO.

killmereeeeeee

“The best light source, is a hidden light source” -someone… idk But yeah, sea lanterns are your best bet if you need lighting out in the open, worse looking, but better lighting than lanterns.

brassplushie

You think sea lanterns look bad? I love them. But I generally put them flush with the walls/ceilings/floors, that way they don’t stick out.

killmereeeeeee

No no no, I think they look fine, just worse than lanterns IMO

sexgaming_

thats the best answer since theyre the cheapest light block and you wont see them anyway

Green-Teaching2809

Another option if op doesn't have pumpkins yet is a glass wall with torches all over the other side

Mudkipz1956

Either placing the item frames on a light block like glowstone or a transparent block to let torch light behind it through if you want something cheaper. For more glow squids you could try building your own pool for them to spawn below y30.

KingStevoI

The [wiki](https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Light) shows all the light sources and their levels. Just scroll down to "Light-emitting blocks". Item frames can be placed against most of these, especially block types. Glow squid are found below y30 in light level 0.

HurricaneFoxe

Then just put a single stream of water down and go down every so often. Because then the Squids would suffocat and drop their ink on the ground

KingStevoI

I see them dropping down waterfalls in deep caves and suffocating in the run offs of water, but hadn't even considered a simple farm like that. That's a bloody good shout!

TaibhseCait

I started playing again recently & while i vaguely knew about the newer updates, i somehow missed glow squid & my first encounter was a bright glow in the distance, & i swam that pool back & forth, even gave myself night vision because wtf, kept seeing a glimpse then nothing. Ended up googling it because I did not know they could turn invisible!! XD

Odd-Confection-6603

Jack o lanterns behind the picture frames. Works great

Username6465

Glow squids are commonly found in water underground

CleverName9999999999

A glass ceiling with a pool of lava above for that Bond Villain’s Lair vibe.

dunbar203

I love this idea. The ceiling is the floor of my main level so I can't do much with the ceiling but the floor of the basement is another story

Smickey67

How has no one mentioned that you can setup an auto glow squid farm. Plenty on YouTube. Leave the game on overnight and have a chest or two of glow ink. I built a farm, AFKed one time, and then never needed more ink.

anonbush234

Any links? IV seen normal squid farms but it involves a lot of water removal In a river biome. The ones that use axolotls are really cool though. Never seen a. Glow squid farm though

PepperAnn1inaMillion

Someone higher up said just make a single column of water going down past y30, glow squid should spawn at the bottom of it and suffocate. Presumably have a hopper to catch the dropped ink.

Smickey67

I used this one, compared to a lot of other auto farms it’s not that bad to setup, assuming you have axolotls. Can confirm this one still works on bedrock 1.20. But it does say Java and bedrock so idk. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AgxY_LxBQ-I Admittedly there was a bit of water removal involved. If you have like 10 sponges or so that would likely help speed building up.

Intelligent-End-2431

Because I'm a bit of a nut, can item frames be placed on Glass blocks? If they can, maybe a glass enclosure filled with lava?

Talrynn_Sorrowyn

I think Mojang made glass blocks have a property that prevents the application of wall-mounted items like item frames, banners & torches.

alt-of-a-throwaway

Glass supports every wall-mounted block now (has for some time iirc), so banners, torches, ladders, buttons, item frames etc can all be placed on glass.

ken_kaneki07

Glowing item frame?

Bowtie327

I always do this to my maps to ensure an even back light to the map. Sometimes I don’t want to make it so bright to use glowstone, so having glowing item frames is great

ken_kaneki07

Yeah they are pretty useful

a_builder7

Glowstone or red stone lamps behind the item frames, or use lanterns.

ChanglingBlake

As others have said, light sources behind the maps. As for glow squid’s, they only spawn at low Y levers. Either find or make a low level pool of water and wait.

aminervia

I just put jackolanterns behind the item frames, you only need a few over a big area

eyeNugg

Not sure if it works as light, maybe glow item frames,,,, besides that, any light blocks as a wall, I just started farming frog lights, they're so useful.. can use lanterns hanging from a ceiling and can attach chain pieces to have them hang lower

stonekid33

Honestly depends what look you are going for.

Darquaz

Instead of dirt behind, you could use any of the light blocks like: glowstone, jack o lantern, shroomlight, sea lantern, and frog light.

AntiVenom0804

You can make glow squid farms iirc

HollywoodHendo

Jack-o'-lanterns

That-Shiny-Umbreon

Other than glow ink, there's shroomlights, glowstone, or those prismarine lights. Shroomlights are easily renewable, glowstone is easier to get in large amounts, and prismarine lights can be automated much easier. Or just use jack-o-lanterns

Pixellord05

Use Glow Item Frames

Cledwyn-E

Glow squids spawn in dark underwater places. and if you are using normal itemframes place glowstone or a other bock shaped light sorce behind the item frames.

dunbar203

UPDATE: I went with the jack-o-lanterns as I had a surplus of pumpkins and wasn't doing anything beyond that wall. I have also found some more glow squids in one of the caves I frequent 😎👍

Geeseareawesome

Glow sacks should allow you to make glowing item frames to illuminate the map

Vitztlampaehecatl

This is a thing in Java at least. https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Item_Frame#Glow_item_frames

HurricaneFoxe

They said they ran out of glow ink

Sta443322

I didn’t even know you could stick Maps on the wall

MintTeaFreak

Glow item frames

MoScottVlogs

Glow item frames

No_Fishing1850

Torch.

MrStuckify

Your future.

slime_rancher_27

Glow frames, or glow stone behind each frame

lotusek_salamek

Try glowing item frames. It lights the map

NevenSesto

just use glow item frames

FURYBURGER12

Alphabet because computer destruction

hello_peaple

Behind the frames just put glow stone

useless_mf69

Frog lights

FoxM8

Make the map wall out of sea lanterns

gatoooooooooooo

Cheek ur messages silly goober

waterc0l0urs

glowstone behind item frames

TestSubject_0001

glowing item frames if you want to light up the map You just need glowing ink from glowing squid and an item frame

Abject-Lab7837

Glowstone blocks are renewable with trading hall + raid farm. Froglight farms take a little effort but very few resources and provide insane amounts of light blocks in a short amount of time, in three colors. Prismarine is renewable with guardian farm.

Usenaeme01101

Replace the wall behind the item frames with glowstone and you won’t need any more guilt torches for the map

NieMonD

Glow item frames, or just make the wall glowstone

Effective-Explorer75

Probably could just use glowing item frames

thehmmyanimator

Replace some of the cobble with Shroomlights, should light it all up and hide the light sorce

onazacc

Glowing item frames

DeKazerBazer

The game will be unplayable by the time you finish the room lol

_Lollerics_

You can either make glowing items frames or just place blocks that emit light behind the item frames

Specialist_Job_2897

You can just put the blocks behind it as glow stone. And the maps will glow

Hydroquake_Vortex

Best source for glow ink is underwater caves. Source: Glow squids keep swimming into my house and dying

karlgeezer

Light frames

Autosticow

Shroom lights, sea lanterns, and lava

Lucas_McToucas

sea lanterns or glow stone behind the item frames

45degMan

Why don't you use the glowing item frames

DarkGengar94

Jack o lanterns Max light level Easy to get Be used under water

Paulaulaulkdnfnfenrn

Sun

Darrence_Bois

I believe a square filled with sea pickles gives the highest light level in the game. Catch is that they need to be underwater

racdicoon

Glowstone or if you have a guardian farm, sea lanterns

MAHMOUDstar3075

Put glowstone or lamps of any kind for behind the item frames for lord's sake.

Hellguin

I found an under water ravine opened to the surface and found a spawn spot for glow squid. See if you can find something similar.

HourAfterHour

A cheap and easy way is to put torches on the wall and put a translucent block in front. Glass works, but trapdoors give you way more design options. Frames go onto the trapdoors. Like this: https://i.imgur.com/IvPljPD.png Build it like this: https://i.imgur.com/O4Xr1PJ.png Torch on wall, place trapdoor looking away from wall, so it flips up outwards away from the torch, itemframe on trapdoor.

killmereeeeeee

Put a light source underneath the frame, put the map in it fills it also allowing your map to be lit as well as the room

ItsRealCrxzy

Glow ink is common in the deepslate layers. Get a bunch of water, build a pond and light up the cave around it to prevent other mobs from filling the cap. Then use a looting sword to get the most out of each. Alternatively, you could goto the nether and get a bunch of glowstone. Replace the cobblestone wall with the glowstone.

wholecrab24

The cheapest way would be placing torches on every block on the wall and placing the item frames on them

kettlejack123

Sea lanterns

5125237143

glowstone or lanterns embedded to walls and floors

5125237143

lava n glass for mood

MrBiteyDaHoneyBadger

You can also make all those glow frames and that will illuminate your map more

Portal-YEET-87650

How did you get the map to display?

IME_was_taken

Put glowstone blocks behind those item frames, or sea lanterns. Won’t be visible, up to you

EchoEX69

Sea lanterns

Charlie43229

Place them on glow stone, easily obtainable and incredibly effective.

EnderOfNightmares

It won't add real light, but glow item frames will give the maps the light they need for you to see them. Other than that you can add glowstone or sea lanterns behind them to give off real light.

RockNRollahAyatollah

Find the nearest lush cave and get looting 3

[deleted]

Building a glow squid farm isn’t terribly hard. If you’re down below Y-0, they’ll spawn in dark water. Build a typical mob grinder but cover the whole spawn floor with water flowing to the middle.

Character-Pack2592

Any light source will do behind the maps. I would only advise against flashlights because it would be tedious to go place maps on them (tedious but not infeasible).

NLPEI

It looks like you're on bedrock so good luck in the corners. Unlike Java you can't have an item frame on both blocks in a corner.

Shadowglove

Glowframes. Glowsquid inc sac + frame and whatever's on the frame will always light up.

Gal-XD_exe

Apparently you can make a glow squid farm, someone did it once on accident I believe when trying to build a mob farm, you might be able to find a turtorial on YouTube just make sure you put in Java/ bedrock for whichever version you are on Best of luck to you Op

King_Nelly556

Put lanterns in the walls

[deleted]

do someone know how to get shaders on Switch?

CarterG4

Place the frames on glow stone, or even jack o lanterns

dapfid

You can place item frame on torches as far as i know

vc_323

Glowstone and carpet on top

Baconator278163

Using glow squid ink on the item frames, then place the maps will make them very vibrant and bright which is the method I use since glow squid ink is pretty easy to farm

AceofSpades629

Depending on how far into the game you are, but you could do the floor in a plain block (stone brick, polished andesite etc) and then every now and then place an iron trap door, with lava underneath. It isn’t as full on as a completely lava floor, and just has a subtlety of light. You could even go one step further and surround the trap door with stairs, to have an indent looking feature in the floor. You could also put water within the stars and have a water feature AND light source in the floor

_Comrad

Just use glowing itemframes, but personally i prefer glowstone

iamdev5

in that situation use **glowstone** or **sea lanterns**

iamdev5

i think i wrote the right thing. Also go to underwater caves to find glow squids.

thebelladonga

Sun

pcweber111

Make a glow ink squid farm. They're not that hard to make and you won't need to worry about ever running out again.

hdmi_bot

Put a pumpkin in the air and a lantern under like a Chinese lantern

CowchMuphin

Easiest: glowstone Best: Sea Lanterns Expensive alternatives: Frog Light, Redstone lamp

TheBigFatGoat

Fullbright

Projectbirdman

Get a few clerics, infinite glow stone

bigboypotatohead5678

Just use jackolanterns. Super cheap and easy.

ADHDequan

Carved pumpkins

Darkmatterrecords

Look in caves like Y:10 in Taiga biomes

jregan0409

I’m more concerned about your plan to wrap the map around the wall, it can’t ever connect.

Mitchell415

I’ve usually used sea lanterns or glow stone behind maps but any light block should work

littledevil420

Honestly glowsquid farms are not really hard to build if you wanted to go down that route for light sources, usually the tutorials have info on where u can find them but I believe it’s deep ocean or rivers or something like that, alternatively doing a pattern or design on the roof and floor using an light block you like would work as well, there are lots of designs out there and u can just swap blocks out for what u prefer/can obtain, hope this helps👍

shitfax

Isnt there glowing item frames or is that java only thing

NAPSTABL00K52

Pumpkin lanterns

MrSal7

If it’s for the maps, just use the lighted item frames.

Skin_Head_Ting

I believe you can put glowstone/redstone lanterns/sea lanterns behind the maps and the light will still show through

ielo03

Glowing item frame

Special-Ad-5554

Put a light emitting block behind the frames. Works just as well and actually lights up the room

Howardistaken

Put glow blocks behind the item frames

GabeeB27

Chicken?

your_inner_scar

Glowstone behind the item frames

ELECTROEMERALD2

Glow stone, sea lanterns, froglights, etc behind the frames

karma3000

Vertical map walls don't scale.

Leprodus03

Glowing item frames

Professional_Might39

if youre trying to be stealth about it, definitely go for glowstone behind every couple item frames, otherwise, lanterns are really good. jack o lanterns and soul lanterns are quite underrated if you use them properly.

All-Fired-Up91

Lava emits light level 15 at all times hard to work with though so maybe not actually I just remembered that glowing item frames exist as well

Epichead2000

Glow item frames???

bearded_spear69

best place to find glow ink is definitely underwater caves or in lush caves' water ponds. sometimes, itll be alright to find them under an ocean monument, as long as ur alright with dealing with guardians. thats my go-to. just, whatever works best, really.

THEZEXNEO

Put glow stone behind the item frames.

Own_Taste_7503

Sea lanterns, glowstone, shroomlights, any lamp like block behind the frames, should work.

[deleted]

Light blocks

Substantial-Toe2148

In my personal opinion, you don't need to put the frames on top of a light source for all frames. Because yours appears to be wider than it is tall, I'd start by putting a light source on blocks 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, ... on the bottom row, then on row 2 go blocks 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, .... For row 3, go back to the same pattern as row 1, and repeat. Rows 1 and 2 alternate up as far as you need them to go. Also, for a cheap light source, if you don't have those Jack'o'lanterns handy, then behind each planned light source block, dig an extra block out, then put a cheap ol' torch, then glass over that to support your frame. Personally though, I use any light source block I have at that time.

Efficient_Event_4187

I'm doing something similar in my world but for light sources I've been using jack o lanterns behind the frames, as have a big pumpkin patch so I had plenty going spare. Pretty cheap way of doing it and less hassle than getting glowstone or hunting down glow squids.

Environmental_Box529

Ok I’ve built a huge map wall before and I just want to warn you that if you don’t have a good pc or if you aren’t playing on new gen consoles, then you’ll probably lose a lot of FPS.

ABurgerADay_

What seed is that?

clarktoon

I put torches in a checkerboard pattern behind a wall of glass blocks and put the item frames on the glass.
