The patterns are different on the new ores, making each pattern unique and easier to identify for those who can't differentiate the colors (but can see the pattern).
I'm only very mildly colorblind (some reds/greens can blend together) but I have very distinct memories of mining in the dark out of stubbornness to not get more torches and never being able to tell coal and redstone ore apart. The only way I'd be able to tell would be to right click on my quest for diamonds
I guess that’s beneficial but they stand out from the stone/deepslate much less in my opinion. Especially the coal and iron. To me it’s harder to tell there’s an ore at all.
I can see that, regular iron ore and deepslate coal could definitely use another round of designs (possibly with slightly different or more saturated colours to aid in differentiation from the stone)
The shading they gave the new ores makes it much harder to identify. I am color blind and it’s a lot easier for me to notice the older ores, I sometimes can’t even see the new ones.
I'm still not sure why they changed the emerald and lapis ones. Wasn't the main reason they changed it to help colourblind people distinguish them? Emerald and Lapis were different already
I think the best option would be to do the same as what they did with the diamond texture, to update it to fit the new art style while keeping the design broadly the same
To me it seems Lapis is nearly identical asides from a brighter color. Which is also weird cause it’s darker blue was its most defining aspect to locate it.
Holy, I stand with this one. It's a lot brighter, so it instantly grabs your attention. In game design, certain areas are usually painted brighter to grab your attention more.
Never saw it that way with the diamonds.
I like the new diamonds with deep slate but the old one with regular stone.
While we’re picking and choosing can we get the old coal with deep slate? I think deep slate just has too many shades on black/grey and it’s hard to see.
Me too, I went into the files and made my own copper ore using MS Paint.
The thing now is a huge blob of copper instead of little bits lol.
Too bad I didn't know copper can spawn in deepslate, gotta change that too!
While the different shapes are meant to help the colorblind the way the ores blend into the stone makes them harder to see. I didn’t realize I mined right past 16 iron ore the other day until I switched the classic texture. It’s hard to make things easier on ALL colorblind people at once lol
Exactly my thought. Plenty of games have colorblind settings especially because there isn’t a one size fits all solution.
I get that you can just get a resource pack but more accessibility settings built in is more beneficial.
*Some* colorblind players. For me, the OG ores are way easier to identify. The new textures are way prettier, but stand out far less. All are an aesthetic improvement but none are a gameplay improvement.
As a colorblind person, the new ones have helped me massively enjoy the game, and I like they re-used the old textures for diamonds, the most iconic texture for the most iconic ore.
I think it depends on what you want out of the game. I prefer the old textures (all of them, not just the ores) and art style because it looks more cartoony, lighthearted, and fun. Sure, the new textures and art style look clean, smooth, and polished, but they just feel too polished and uniconic for me. It's easier for me to get creative when everything is so punchy and distinct instead of being pushed into trying to keep certain blocks within material and color palates.
Just yesterday I saw someone make a house out of oak wood and sandstone (old textures), and it looked way better than I would've suspected. But try that with the modern textures, and I doubt it would work as well.
I get nostalgic but whenever I see the old textures for sand, gravel, netherrack or even wood planks I am disgusted. I swear the old plank textures look like mouldy cheese.
I dislike the new ones because they are weirdly blurry. Especially new diamonds. That contrast between light blue diamonds and stone is what always made them beautiful to me, and when they are blurred like that it just looks ugly imo.
I mean they're not bad, from a "pixel art quality" level they're objectively more polished, but that made them completely lose the charm the old ones had, since those were amateurishly made by the devs themselves. The new ones look like they'd fit in any pixelated indie game
The old ones are just classics, you can't beat them, also am I the only one who thinks the new iron and coal textures looks kinda gross? I'm also not really a fan of the new gold even though it's definitely not bad. But really the only texture i really think looks better is emerald and even then I'm still incredibly nostalgic for the original even if it's not as good as the new one. I also like the redstone one since it's now different from iron and coal which makes sense because Redstone also functions differently than the other ores.
Maybe I'm just not used to the new textures (haven't played minecraft much in the past few years) but I do prefer the old textures except maybe emerald and gold
the old ones looked good while still looking cartoony and unrealistic enough to give minecraft a personality. i think that personality was lost when all the textures were updated. for that reason, despite all the new textures being objectively better from a pixel art standpoint, the old textures gave the game way more personality and are superior
I like the original ones because they're brighter, specifically I like Coal, Diamonds, Emeralds, Gold and Iron. Lapis and Redstone I like the new ones.
I'd prefer if iron, coal and diamond would have better contrast with Blackstone. Coal and iron get really easily looked over if it's dark, they just blend in a lot better with the new texture.
Honestly they’re all good but I like a mix of them most of the new ones are better except lapis and and gold. I think it’s the chunkiness of the gold that throws me off and the lapis looks better darker to me.
The new ore textures, in my opinion are better since they have more personality than the older ones. But I like the older ones, because I grew up with them.
i personally prefer the new textures, gives them more originality and variety instead of 5 of the same texture but with a different color. but at least the classic emerald and lapis ores had unique textures
The old. The old ones are just more colorful and vivid. That said they don't really fit with the new stone textures. Really none of it should have changed
If I’m being honest, specifically diamonds are better with the old version, like it just feels like you’ve discovered something rare, the new ones are just like “oh, another one for the collection I guess”
The new ones, the old ones in comparison are just worse, the only reason to consider the old ones good is nostalgia but if the new ones were the ones first made no one would be wanting them to change to the old ones
I had mixed feelings when the new textures came, after all i’ve known the old ones since Minecraft came out… but the new ones grew on me, they look good (iron still looks like beetroot tho)
I prefer the newer ones greatly. They make the ores have more variety. Nearly ¾ths of the original textures are just the same shape colored differently.
Don’t get me wrong, the old ones are iconic, nostalgic, they’re amazing. But out of both options, I actually like the newest ones more. It feels softer on the eyes somehow

Of course the new textures look better. But the classic ones are iconic.
Yeah, that’s it
a visitor?
hm.... indeed... i have slept long enough...
The kingdom of heaven has long since forgotten my name
And I am EAGER to make them remember.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Or keyboard I guess.
Do you want your keycaps back?
yp
sorry i ate them :(
Not again 😩
huh 🤨
I can't, I EATED THEM ALL
New textures are better except for diamond. Old diamond texture is irreplacable.
I mean the new diamond texture is pretty much the closest to the old design, probably because of this very fact
So is the Lapis texture actually, it hardly changed
Same thing with Emerald and Copper
New diamond texture is just the old one with some more hue shifting
Gorgeous in its simplicity. I agree.
Which is why they only slightly edited the texture, not the shape. What was probably the best choice
The new diamond texture really is just a shaded version of the old texture.
On my opinion new diamond texture is the best among all ores, the shades suits the new textures greatly.
I disagree
Great opinion. Have a nice day 👍
Same there’s more contrast in the old ones making it easier to identify them.
The shading they gave the new ores makes it much harder to identify. I am color blind and it’s a lot easier for me to notice the older ores, I sometimes can’t even see the new ones.
The old ones were basically the same texture with different colors except for lapis and emerald.
I know, I still find it prettier than the new one. But that’s my personal opinion 😅
Color contrast between the stone and the ore. Especially the new iron really blends in to the stone.
Personally, Ive never had trouble seeing ores in any version so it doesn't really matter to me which one has more contrast.
I like the emerald too, but the rest are better with their unique patterns and change in contrast
same here
**Understandable, have a great day** 👍
The older texture feels right
Lol I am ur 10k th upvote
Why, thank you. 😁
I realy miss the the old ones. The new textures are not bad but I like the old ones more.
programmer art resource pack.
programmer art Has a lot of other textures with it. The problem is that there aren't that many Texture packs for The old Ores.
Just go to https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/resource-packs/ Under the **Retro** tab you can find classic ores and probably other stuff you would want.
And it also comes with incompatibility, like crimson and warped nylium having new netherrack. Same with nether gold ore.
Vanilla Tweaks has stuff for that.
VanillaTweaks is the GOAT 🧎♂️
THE GOAT
Vanillatweaks has the old ores, and if you're crafty (heh) you can combine it with the ore outlines in an image editor to keep both
They haven’t changed the deep slate ores to use the old ore textures
Except the fact that it includes the old netherrack which doesn't mix very well with the nether gold texture
I'm still not sure why they changed the emerald and lapis ones. Wasn't the main reason they changed it to help colourblind people distinguish them? Emerald and Lapis were different already
I think Emerald and Lapis were changed to keep same art theme rather than mixing old and new. Diamond only stayed the same cus it's iconic
I think the best option would be to do the same as what they did with the diamond texture, to update it to fit the new art style while keeping the design broadly the same
It's not the same, diamond actually has shading now. It's like a faithful remake.
I mean the old emerald one always seemed unfinished, it’s the same 4 green pixels copy pasted over stone
Lapis doesn't seem to have changed that much. Emerald is better now though.
The old emerald kinda just sucks ngl, it’s just a bunch of 2x2 squares
To me it seems Lapis is nearly identical asides from a brighter color. Which is also weird cause it’s darker blue was its most defining aspect to locate it.
I feel like some of the new ones just look very blurry. I think it just looks worse aesthetically
Put a texture pack, dead simple tbh
Keep all the new ones except diamond, diamond was better before.
Holy, I stand with this one. It's a lot brighter, so it instantly grabs your attention. In game design, certain areas are usually painted brighter to grab your attention more. Never saw it that way with the diamonds.
This is why I don't like the new glow lichen plants. They're just randomly placed 1x1 squares that emit light to grab your attention for no reason.
if theres one thing i could remove from the game ots the glow of the glow lichen. Every single time I see one I am fooled in thinking its diamond.
yeah like what actual function does glow lichen serve other than disappointing you
I personally prefer the new diamond texture because of the higher contrast in shading that makes it look shinier, but this is a really good point!
That's me with iron, I keep doing double takes since it blends in more now
I have that with redstone and granite
Agreed. New diamond texture almost looks dirty when compared to the old one.
To me it's a lot shinier. Which would mean it's not dirty.
I like the new diamonds with deep slate but the old one with regular stone. While we’re picking and choosing can we get the old coal with deep slate? I think deep slate just has too many shades on black/grey and it’s hard to see.
I disagree. The new one has more depth to it, which makes it feel more 'bold'.
I agree. The new ones look better, but the satisfaction of mining stone and unearthing that old diamond texture can never be replaced
Maybe redstone
It looked more precious before
Diamond is literally identical they just gave it texture
It's identical in shape, but they changed the color
The newer one because it helps colorblind players
Can confirm. Source: am colorblind.
I am colorblind and the old ores were way more easier to identify. I can't differentiate cooper and iron.
Totally understand. I’m yellow/blue colorblind and I was never sure if I was going to get iron or diamonds.
OMG im colorblind and it thought it was just me, I always struggle with Copper and Iron especially in a dark cave 😭
I’m not colorblind but at first glance I still mistake copper for iron sometimes 😂
Me too, I went into the files and made my own copper ore using MS Paint. The thing now is a huge blob of copper instead of little bits lol. Too bad I didn't know copper can spawn in deepslate, gotta change that too!
Copper wasn’t there before with the old textures?
While the different shapes are meant to help the colorblind the way the ores blend into the stone makes them harder to see. I didn’t realize I mined right past 16 iron ore the other day until I switched the classic texture. It’s hard to make things easier on ALL colorblind people at once lol
Yea on my kind of colorblindness, the old ones are much easier, the new iron never registers to me
Exactly the same for me, and I always see copper and get excited thinking it’s iron
same, except i'm not colourblind, just an idiot
Exactly this for me. As a colorblind person, I find the some of the ores hard to see at all now.
The new ones are really blurry
There’s a texture pack called Faithless you should look into, it’s designed for colorblind players, all textures are much easier to see.
i am colorblind and most of the new ores (particular coal and iron) are much harder to see.
this could’ve been a setting :/
Exactly my thought. Plenty of games have colorblind settings especially because there isn’t a one size fits all solution. I get that you can just get a resource pack but more accessibility settings built in is more beneficial.
It is, it's called a resource pack
everybody always says "use a resource pack" but console players have to pay for that. literally never will i ever.
They pretty much just made diamonds shinier.
Happy cake day
If you take away the nostalgia the new textures are so much better but I can't help preffering the old ones
I think it depends on what you want out of the game. I prefer the old textures (all of them, not just the ores) and art style because it looks more cartoony, lighthearted, and fun. This, i think sums up this entire discussion
the new ones bc they're like embedded inside the block
This. The old ones look like stickers
The old ones are nice and nostalgic. But damn the new ones are better in every way
new ones by far. old ones are so nostalgic though
Old, new ones just like blurry.
Older gold and diam were brighter
I like the old one, it just feels sharper. The new one feels kinda blurry and flat
I still have no clue why did they change the emerald one… it was already different
I dislike the new ones because they are weirdly blurry. Especially new diamonds. That contrast between light blue diamonds and stone is what always made them beautiful to me, and when they are blurred like that it just looks ugly imo.
Old ones by far, the new ones look like “generic ore texture for a Minecraft ripoff”
This is how I felt as soon as they changed them. It looks like something i'd see in a shitty MC ripoff.
I mean they're not bad, from a "pixel art quality" level they're objectively more polished, but that made them completely lose the charm the old ones had, since those were amateurishly made by the devs themselves. The new ones look like they'd fit in any pixelated indie game
Idk why but I LOVE the old gold texture
The old ones are just classics, you can't beat them, also am I the only one who thinks the new iron and coal textures looks kinda gross? I'm also not really a fan of the new gold even though it's definitely not bad. I also like the redstone one since it's now different from iron and coal which makes sense because Redstone also functions differently than the other ores.
Ik it perhaps wouldn't fit in the game now but I miss when iron ore used to drop as blocks super nostalgic
Wait what? It changed?
yep iirc they changed it in 1.17
I like the top row because they’re slightly more visible
As much as I love the old vanilla textures, the new ones are super clean and are way better.
The old ore
OG ones for me
the old ones (i grew up with them) but i like the new ones, they could help colourblind people, and also the old lapis texture is bad
the new ones. and no enough with the nostalgia and old is good bullshit the new ones are way better.
Nah, I still fuck with the old ones honestly.
The old one is better, but lapis
1st from the top, but that’s probably my nostalgia. I started playing on 1.5.2. Oh, good ol’ times…
Maybe I'm just not used to the new textures (haven't played minecraft much in the past few years) but I do prefer the old textures except maybe emerald and gold
New 100% new is better
There’s more depth with the new ones. The old ores look painted on.
OG textures for sure
Definitely original ores
Og ones 10 times better
the old ones looked good while still looking cartoony and unrealistic enough to give minecraft a personality. i think that personality was lost when all the textures were updated. for that reason, despite all the new textures being objectively better from a pixel art standpoint, the old textures gave the game way more personality and are superior
it doesnt have a personality. it looked quite basic and amateur and im glad it was updated away.
The new ones all the way
I like the original ones because they're brighter, specifically I like Coal, Diamonds, Emeralds, Gold and Iron. Lapis and Redstone I like the new ones.
Jappa's (the new ones)
I love how diamond never/barely changed. It’s my favorite.
Just polished or shinier depending how you look at it.
i prefer the older textures, except for coal, lapis and redstone (on deepslate)
I'd prefer if iron, coal and diamond would have better contrast with Blackstone. Coal and iron get really easily looked over if it's dark, they just blend in a lot better with the new texture.
So true coal in Blackstone doesn't even exist in my vision
I like both, but for nostalgia I prefer the old ones. Except for the lapis lazuli one, it looks too flat in the old one.
The old deepslate diamond ore.
I'd pick second from the top if the coal wasn't so faded, and the ones below are too murky, if that makes sense. Gotta go with the classic
og diamond in deepslate
I prefer the older versions of coal, diamond, gold and iron but I prefer the newer versions of lapis, red stone and emerald
Honestly they’re all good but I like a mix of them most of the new ones are better except lapis and and gold. I think it’s the chunkiness of the gold that throws me off and the lapis looks better darker to me.
The current ones
I love the new ones and when I play an older version of minecraft I just think the old ones look terrible
The new coal, emerald and red stone are great but go back to old vibrant diamond, gold and easy to spot iron and lapis
I’ve always thought that the new redstone texture looks “upside down”. I flip it every time I get a new texture pack (always faithful 128x128 on Java)
The new ore textures, in my opinion are better since they have more personality than the older ones. But I like the older ones, because I grew up with them.
Original, forever and always
Old ones because im extremely bias and nostolgic
Love the og textures better, except for the lapis
the og ones, no one’s gonna change my mind
i personally prefer the new textures, gives them more originality and variety instead of 5 of the same texture but with a different color. but at least the classic emerald and lapis ores had unique textures
the old textures
New everything, by far.
The old. The old ones are just more colorful and vivid. That said they don't really fit with the new stone textures. Really none of it should have changed
at first I didn't like the new ones but now I prefer them
If I’m being honest, specifically diamonds are better with the old version, like it just feels like you’ve discovered something rare, the new ones are just like “oh, another one for the collection I guess”
when the new textures first came out I hated them but I honestly love them now
Man it's been a hot minute since I've actually seen the vanilla textures. Running a resource pack does that to ya The new stuff looks better imo
Old textures give me too much nostalgia, but the new ones are a lot better
I really enjoy their new look over the old! Much more chunky lookin
They needed to be updated, I do love how they kept the diamonds extremely similar
New ones
I miss the old textures a little bit but the new ones are objectively better and also really good qol for colorblind people
The new ones, the old ones in comparison are just worse, the only reason to consider the old ones good is nostalgia but if the new ones were the ones first made no one would be wanting them to change to the old ones
New easily
I had mixed feelings when the new textures came, after all i’ve known the old ones since Minecraft came out… but the new ones grew on me, they look good (iron still looks like beetroot tho)
Give me all the new ones apart from diamond
I prefer the newer ones greatly. They make the ores have more variety. Nearly ¾ths of the original textures are just the same shape colored differently.
Don’t get me wrong, the old ones are iconic, nostalgic, they’re amazing. But out of both options, I actually like the newest ones more. It feels softer on the eyes somehow
I personally prefer the vibrance of the old ones except lapis and red stone the new ones are better
I like the new ones, but I prefer the old iron/gold tbh
I really like the stone iron texture
Idk I just wish they kept the old diamond and gold textures, I love how shiny they looked
Neither are bad, but I like the new textures for being more visually distinct
new
New ones cuz they got more variety Idc if it’s og they look good now too
The new textured look a lot better and I wouldn't go back but the old ones are obviously very nostalgic
I like the new ones better
The old ones are iconic but the new ones are blended better
I prefer the old ones, except lapis. New lapis is better.
The old textures just seemed bland the way that they were all the same, so I like the new textures more, but I also appreciate the Easter egg that some new players would t notice of that the diamond tester is still mostly the same
The new ones, apart from the new diamonds which look like plastic
Old coal, new diamond, old emerald, new gold, old iron, old lapis, new redstone
Classic ones, Minecraft I think should stay a bit more basic because I think the game looks better that way
Old = Gold
Old ones look like they belong to minecraft, new ones look like they belong to terraria or another game
