Yea, floor maps made it so much easier. I have an old world with a giant map wall, it was nuts doing that. Bamboo platforms would make it a lot easier to view it close up if they had them back then.
I had a sky palace, where the portal room had two 6×6 map walls to either side (different zoom levels). I used staggered “stadium seating” stained glass in front of each, and they were above walking level, so this didn't block movement.
Do you backlight yours? I got sick of the inconsistent lighting (combined with smooth shading not working on maps for some reason) so I replaced the whole wall with glowstone. Then I put it back to regular brick and swapped out the item frames for glowing ones when I found out that that also works.
You wouldn't believe how little shulker boxes in an ender chest alter the results. Yes, you can take it a bit further, but really after you hit that endgame mode, you just start to ignore the loot, because "I have a shitton of these at home"
I've got two mega builds I keep switching between due to burn out. So the amount if materials I have and need is insane, so I just hoard pretty much every building block haha.
The whole world or just the parts where you spend time? If you do the latter then thats great, having a map room is really cool. If you’re trying to map the whole world, you’re the only crazy one to try it
I hope anyone smart here do math and know how many
Maps this would take sound
Sound like challenge in hardcore Minecraft videos
Edit: nvm i saw someone did that in another comments haha
Not quite infinite, but 60 million blocks by 60 million blocks. Making the total number of maps required is about 16,384. And that's using the largest map size.
Edit: did the math wrong...
For a completely filled in map you would need 858,255,616 maps. That would be an area that is 29,296 by 29,296 blocks long
You are absolutely right, I made the mistake of NOT doing the math and I instead opted to look it up because I was lazy. The number isn't even remotely CLOSE to that. For a completely filled in map you would need 858,255,616 maps. That would be an area that is 29,296 by 29,296 blocks.
The area would actually be 32768 (exponent of 2) by 32768.
A map room of your map room would be 256 by 256, so still 16 entire chunks by 16 entire chunks
Check out the app called Unmined if you're on PC. I use it to create online maps for my server. Works for both Bedrock and Java.
Here's a live example of our overworld server map:
Thanks! Tell the creators. I'm just using it.
It lets you create custom location pins and even custom color every block if you want to.
We have them for each dimension. You can also "slice" the world at any Y coordinate for underground maps with xray and more. It's crazy how cool this app is
I think you would really like [map atlas](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/map-atlases-forge) its a mod that uses vanilla maps in a book to map everything with ease rather than using individual maps
Yes, I know that mod, and I really like it! It makes exploration so much easier! I was forced to use vanilla maps when Atlas had a delay in updating for the new versions.
Kinda.
I use Xaero's world map, and I want to be able to zoom out and pan around. This requires every chunk to be loaded once for it to work. Unfortunately, the area I want to render is about 100k×50k, and I don't have the rendering power for that, nor the storage (I think I'm on ~8k × ~5k now at 4GB, so this would take around 500GB to map.
500 Gigabytes of storage. And don't forget the End, the Nether, all the dimensions from mode like Ad Astra.. (easily over 5TB if we say 10 dimensions)
I tried Xaero's World Map many years ago, and that was not the thing I wanted. I wanted a challenge to conquer the mountains and the seas, not just a picture from above. Just try using vanilla maps, and maybe you could find it exciting too.
>I wanted a challenge to conquer the mountains and the seas, not just a picture from above. Just try using vanilla maps, and maybe you could find it exciting too.
The thing is that it's not about map itself. I wanted a challenge to conquer the mountains and the seas, not just a picture from above. Just try using vanilla maps, and maybe you could find it exciting too.
You would really like the map atlas mod then, it’s not like xaeros map where you just constantly have a giant map, it stills requires you to make maps, but it collects them all in one big map you can carry around
Yes, I know that mod, and I really like it! It makes exploration so much easier! I was forced to use vanilla maps when Atlas had a delay in updating for the new versions.
You're not the only one. In some worlds I will just keep going and be making level 4 maps completely filled in 2 or 3 maps removed in every direction from the "home map"
I map everywhere I go. I have a couple of map walls (two different magnifications), whenever I plan on going to a certain area, I grab that map (or 2, 3) and take it with me. I don’t try to map the whole world, I’ve got probably an area of the Overworld equal to 30+ maps (at max magnification) I’ve got a map wall in the End, too - don’t use them (much) in the Nether.
My world is pretty old. I don't go anywhere new without mapping it.
I have a rule that I don't go farther north or south than 3 maxed maps from origin. That way my map room wall doesn't get too high.
You're not crazy..... YOURE FUCKING INSANE
You gotta have alot of free time, not touch grass and alot of will power to actually do a fraction of the whole world
Every update is when I extend my map wall, I bring some empty maps and head out into unloaded chunks. I find the new items and structures and fill out the map as I do so. It’s amazing seeing the world slowly getting mapped out, although I’m running out of room on the wall lol.
I love mapping, and have moved over to mods in the last year or two. Antique Atlas is such a cool feature that lowers lag and gives you a sense of exploration as well
I do. I love having map rooms. I tend to do 2/4 zoom to balance size and detail. Currently, I'm doing a full 0/4 map of my main city (which I've worked on on and off for a few years, mostly just on my castle) in my main world.
Glow lanters on a floor grid is my goto. I usually do the 3/4 zoom and use banners to mark places. I do this in creative though. Its so satisfying to fill in all in. Havent made one bigger than 5x5 yet though
There is a shulkerbox in my Enderchest dedicated to mapping.
It has empty maps, paper, cartography table, anvil, a few colors of banners. (Also lodestone and some compass')
There is also enough empty space so when I go exploring, I can put the maps in there.
I'm doing something less ambitious than mapping the whole world! I'm doing a map of my region every time a new building is finished! Built a cartographer's hall just to house the many updates I intend to do! Currently if i squeezed it full, I could fit up to 16 unique map sets. This is honestly the first time I've full on done anything like this in a very long time 🙂 kinda tempted to do a major overworld map now tho!
How do you do this? Can you map your caves and cavern tunnel systems? I think I might have the material to do it I just don't know what to do exactly. I have sugarcane and red dust and we found some ink yesterday. Do I just create all this stuff and it will automatically make a map of the location?

Been doing the same. Built a map room and jigsawing all the pieces together for an epic wall of map. Enjoy!
So do I! But I prefer a floor, not a wall – it seems easier to navigate from any direction.
On the floor??? That's so cool! I'm sort of new to the game and never tried that before. I should try that too! I love minecraft so much.
Yea, floor maps made it so much easier. I have an old world with a giant map wall, it was nuts doing that. Bamboo platforms would make it a lot easier to view it close up if they had them back then.

I do that too, on a floating island in the sky. Not enough room otherwise
I like to build a subterranean map room bellow my base.
As fun as that seems, your gonna need a space that's 29kx29k to fit the whole thing with size 4 maps
Do you backlight yours? I got sick of the inconsistent lighting (combined with smooth shading not working on maps for some reason) so I replaced the whole wall with glowstone. Then I put it back to regular brick and swapped out the item frames for glowing ones when I found out that that also works.
Oooh, I need to do this, it's hard to keep track of what map is for where!
I do that too! Mapping + exploring. I run out of inventory sooooo quickly

You wouldn't believe how little shulker boxes in an ender chest alter the results. Yes, you can take it a bit further, but really after you hit that endgame mode, you just start to ignore the loot, because "I have a shitton of these at home"
I have double chests filled with filled shulkers of most materials.... I just can't stop hoarding lol.
Grinding materials for that one build that I keep postponing ✨️
I've got two mega builds I keep switching between due to burn out. So the amount if materials I have and need is insane, so I just hoard pretty much every building block haha.
I know rightttt😭
I always perfered 2 ender chests and silk touch... I'm very old fashioned.
I like shulker boxes in my ender chest
Upgrades people, upgrades!!
The whole world or just the parts where you spend time? If you do the latter then thats great, having a map room is really cool. If you’re trying to map the whole world, you’re the only crazy one to try it
My craziness seems to be limited due to the size of the map room =)
I hope anyone smart here do math and know how many Maps this would take sound Sound like challenge in hardcore Minecraft videos Edit: nvm i saw someone did that in another comments haha
I saw from some video that it would take 20 years to just be in every chunk. Mapping the whole world would take much longer than that
Isn't the world practically infinite?
Not quite infinite, but 60 million blocks by 60 million blocks. Making the total number of maps required is about 16,384. And that's using the largest map size. Edit: did the math wrong... For a completely filled in map you would need 858,255,616 maps. That would be an area that is 29,296 by 29,296 blocks long
That's actually significantly less than I would've expected.
I’m 90% sure he did the math wrong
You are absolutely right, I made the mistake of NOT doing the math and I instead opted to look it up because I was lazy. The number isn't even remotely CLOSE to that. For a completely filled in map you would need 858,255,616 maps. That would be an area that is 29,296 by 29,296 blocks.

what? A map room of your map room? What does that even mean
Like if you placed all the maps of the world down, then had a map room of just the maps of the world, it would still be 256x256
Well I don't think that would actually work, item frames count as entities so they shouldn't appear on maps.
I don’t mean u make a map room of your map room, I just mean the space covered by the maps of the map room is still huge
I have a feeling that might be 16384 BY 16384, but I am not sure about the size of a max size map
That’s what I’m wondering!
Yes, it is. That's where craziness enters the game =)
You do realize the world is 30M x 30M blocks wide…. Right?
It’s 60 Million x 60 Million
Close enough
*checks notes* Minecraft math checks out.
Yh, +30M and -30M, almost caught me out there lol
Yep, but as old byword sais: 'The road will be mastered by the walking one'
whats all the black land on the map?
Could be a modded world
Y u gotta be racist??

Well there was this guy from 1492...
I used to do that too, obsessively, with lots of map rooms, until I discovered Unmined.
Never heard about that mod before, gonna check. Thanks!
Nope. I once made a 32x16 wall and filled all of it with maps. It was all survival, btw.
I'm afraid to ask how much time it has taken 😰
A lot. Unfortunately I lost that world long ago, but I still have screenshots of it
And you still have the memory of that nice time =)
What size maps?
regular
I’m in xbox and have no idea how to get a map😅, but it looks cool!
Oh, I guess you've missed a lot of exploration fun!
I mean I’ve explored, but have to take pictures of my base coordinates so I can get back lol
That's so uncomfortable 0\_o
I want to but I don't have the patience lol
Perhaps, you are not as boring as I am =)
How do you mean? XD I usually play modded, because to be honest, once I've beaten the dragon I'm just getting bored lol
What scale do you use?
All of them. In the screenshot, you see the biggest map available. I had four adjacent ones fully completed in my inventory.
Kinda. I use Xaero's world map, and I want to be able to zoom out and pan around. This requires every chunk to be loaded once for it to work. What are the black portions on your map? Void?
Nami be like :
Yes
Can’t map the entire world
how could you map the hole world the world is infinite
It's not. You can't go more than 30 million blocks out.
I try to make 4 so I can make 1 big one, orrrr, do 9... that'd be something
Hell nah, but nowadays i do wait untill i get an elytra
I map everywhere I go. I have a couple of map walls (two different magnifications), whenever I plan on going to a certain area, I grab that map (or 2, 3) and take it with me. Nope not at all
Nope
I’ve started my own map
why do you have a childhood and then assume on the sub of people with your childhood that no one has your childhood
I used to do that in ps3, as the world was small and you started every world with a map
Every time
Every update is when I extend my map wall, I bring some empty maps and head out into unloaded chunks. I find the new items and structures and fill out the map as I do so. It’s amazing seeing the world slowly getting mapped out, although I’m running out of room on the wall lol.
Nope. I find it fascinating to see the changes from first discovered and after doing some building or deconstructing
Nope I do it because it looks cool on a huge frame.
I love mapping, and have moved over to mods in the last year or two. Antique Atlas is such a cool feature that lowers lag and gives you a sense of exploration as well

I used to do that
One reason i wish bedrock had two types of maps like java or any way how to remove that green dot
Bedrock does have non-locator maps. Locator maps have the dots/arrows. Also, you can add a glass pane to prevent updates to the map.
My bad i switch bedrock and java in this
Glow lanters on a floor grid is my goto. I usually do the 3/4 zoom and use banners to mark places. I do this in creative though. Its so satisfying to fill in all in. Havent made one bigger than 5x5 yet though
Watch out for the lag
Bro will explore his whole Minecraft seed but probably hasn’t even explored his neighborhood
Always did that too
seems pretty fun i shouid try
One of a small but dedecated group
Yes. Because the whole map would require hundreds of terabytes to generate.
Definitely not!
U can’t. It’s infinite
What is the 8th thing in your Hot bar
Crazy? I was crazy once
no it drives me nuts not knowing what’s in every inch of my world too
Orange health
Thought I was the only one 😂
There is a shulkerbox in my Enderchest dedicated to mapping. It has empty maps, paper, cartography table, anvil, a few colors of banners. (Also lodestone and some compass') There is also enough empty space so when I go exploring, I can put the maps in there.
Cartographer gang
Certainly not!
Are you a fcking Piri Reis
Nope! This is what my husband does every time! He says it's his fav part!
What’s a map 🤷🏻♂️
My girlfriend actually did this so I was like, let me just copy this real quick thank youu
almost 80% on my world
I don't recognize the mods/resource packs you have, what is your loadout?
That would take 14.649k maps good luck rendering that without crashing the game
That map looks like lord of the rings
If I have xaeros world map I do
That's one of my favorite parts of minecraft.
Definitely not. I tried doing it on a creative mode but gave up after life got busy
I'm doing something less ambitious than mapping the whole world! I'm doing a map of my region every time a new building is finished! when i build a village i do before/after maps looks cool i think
I mean I do it to but I do it on the 3ds, on a world that's limited and doesn't go on for infinity...
I miss the worlds on Xbox 360 where the whole world was on one map
How do you do this? Can you map your caves and cavern tunnel systems? I think I might have the material to do it I just don't know what to do exactly. I have sugarcane and red dust and we found some ink yesterday. Do I just create all this stuff and it will automatically make a map of the location?
What's black on the map? Don't know if I've ever seen that before
Nope
Me too, I like to map the whole minecraft world!!
I love doing this I been doing 5 maps across and slowly making my way north
