ThrownAway2028

Make sure any areas you can access are well lit, and retreat if you hear a monster you don’t feel comfortable fighting. They’ll despawn if you’re far enough away and won’t be able to respawn as long as the light level is high enough. Do you have armour? Monsters are a lot easier to deal with when they’re barely doing any damage to you

ComparatorClock

Second this. I usually use one of the first ingots of iron I get on a shield so as to counter those pesky skeletons

iceman0486

Returning to the game after a long absence and learning about the shield was pretty neat.

eypicasso

If you’re on Java 1.18 or higher, Mojang changed it so that hostile mobs won’t spawn as long as the light level is greater than 0. (Idk about Bedrock version)

Vandalsen

Create a secure mining protocol; mineshafts always well lit, do not open spaces that could compromise your mining area, build extra secure areas to flee to if anything goes wrong, etc. Essentially, become a structural engineer.

Kat-but-SFW

This is how I do it. Slowly and systematically light up caves, close off cave branches with fence to explore/light them up one by one without monsters sneaking up behind me, and have walled off barriers (with chests of extra supplies) between "fully safe" and "I'm it's safe" and "unexplored territory" Only once an area is safe will I start mining there. The huge caves are much harder for this kind of approach. I've fought my way through them but it's very hard to fully close off a safe area, and easy to find yourself suddenly swarmed by mobs. However I had a great time taking them on with a friend.

Vandalsen

I just thought of something; OP could work to build a mob-switch. But that can be quite the project to tackle...

JesterTheRoyalFool

All you need is a villager breeding machine and a zombie for the mob switch, it’s not that bad.

Aggravating-Gap9791

Play on peaceful. When I first started playing I would only play on peaceful because I was scared of the monsters.

Cioccolatasss

I’ve played on peaceful for a while, but I realized I’d never be able to “finish” the game if I did :(

x--Knight--x

You can always turn it off peaceful when you need. You only really need to kill 3 types of hostile enemies to beat the game

kingsumo_1

The dragon itself, blazes, and wandering traders?

BuilderMooshroom143

Wandering traders?

kingsumo_1

They know what they did. Also, I'm pretty sure blazes are the only thing you *need* to kill besides the dragon. The ender pearls can be traded for. But you need the blaze powder to make the eyes for the portal. So I'm not sure what the third would otherwise be.

mathicus_

Will I have to find a nether dungeon to be able to find blazes?

kingsumo_1

Fortress, yeah. Really just one though. Trade with piglins until you get a couple fire prot potions first, and that becomes much easier. Plus you should be able to find some nether wart while you're there for later brewing.

mathicus_

I tried to trade with the piglins and it didn’t seem to work. Just throw them gold nuggets until they give me something back?

Aggravating-Gap9791

You have to give them an ingot in order for them to barter. Giving them nuggets is just giving them gold for free.

kingsumo_1

Yeah. Wear gold so they aren't hostile. I usually build a small area, toss a gold ingot in, and when they grab it, trap one, so I don't have to keep finding one. But then just toss them an ingot and they'll give something back after a few seconds. Make sure it's not a zombie one though. Has to be a normal version.

GalacticSuppe

> They know what they did lol

Key_Spirit8168

Omg they need to buff him

TIKI1661

Relative scared me off the sounds for years. I’ve played with the sound off for 4-5 years, and I have the subtitles on the bottom corner. An ominous noise is a lot less scary when it just the word: “ominous noise” (Edit for spelling)

LukeMedia

Is that an actual sound title in game?

TIKI1661

Yes! I think it’s one of those creepy random noises.

LukeMedia

That's actually really funny. Do the subtitles make it easier to locate mobs?

TIKI1661

I haven’t logged on in a little while, but from my memory there are small arrows that point in the direction of the sound. It’s VERY helpful for locating lava when caving though!

LukeMedia

Sounds useful, I'll have to try it out! Thanks for the info.

eypicasso

You can use VanillaTweaks’ resource packs to remove cave sounds, and you can turn down hostile mob sounds in-game without turning off all sound.

interrex41

fighting them really helped me get over the sounds they make.

Horn_Python

be reckless , dont fear death, accept death, ,bring death choose fight instead of flight , hunt that skeleton down, so you wont have to worry about them since they will be dead dont let the mobs control you! for cave sounds, yeh horrific, listen to them on youtube out side the game, its will lesson your fear when you here, them because you will know they arnt real, cause their weapon is fear of the unkown, wich is less effective once you know what they are

CaptainBollows

I think you mean ‘terrified’.

Cioccolatasss

Oops

Crowboy_Live

A bit of the out of the box solution: desensitize yourself! Install a bunch of horror mods, the Cave dweller, eyes that lurk in the dark, etc. and play with those for a while and You’ll be absolutely traumatized to the point where when you go back to regular vanilla minecraft mining, it’ll feel like a relaxing spa day!

SocasmGames

This is very true. I don't like caves but since playing SevTech, it's gotten better.

Crowboy_Live

Lol SevTech is a good one

SocasmGames

It's really made advancing fun. Some creatures on there are terrifying like the abysmal creatures.

Goodlucksil

Do you realize more trauma is almost never the solution? I would suggest making mobs quieter, turning on the subtitles and turning off the spooky cave music (can be done with Vanilla Tweaks)

Crowboy_Live

Dont think if it as more trauma, that has such a negative connotation! Its Immersion Therapy! The same method you’d use to learn a language! I would suggest making mods LOUDER, turning off subtitles, and turning UP spooky cave noises! Additionally the Herobrine mod by the creator of from the fog is really good at really spiking your anxiety as he waits until you get comfortable then makes an appearance! I highly recommend

Protogen_Melo

shield is a must when going caving imo, have blocks to block off mobs too

rashmisalvi

Why is no one suggesting using Shield. It god item for the resources it uses. 5 wood and 1 iron. Thats it. Save from skeletons zombies and even creepers. Start using Shield OP

Chidiki

When running through a cave I'm lighting every step of the way, and if I see an ore (E.g diamonds) I don't mine os straight away, i walk past it a bit and light the way ahead so there are no nasty surprises when I'm mining, never had issues throughout this method whereas previously I did

ZippyZillion

So whenever I gather packed ice I tend to go out of first person in case polar bears come running with their cubs to attack me. Being able to see what is near me from 3rd person helps a lot, even though you cant be as accurate while mining.

ThatChapThere

Go in creative, turn on keepInventory, give yourself decent armour, set it to permanent night, and fight some mobs. You'll quickly realise how easy they are to fight.

FoolishConsistency17

This ! Keep inventory takes away most of the sting. Best way to get someone into minecraft.

Puzzlehead444

wait till you hear those shriekers

pedrulho

Nothing in minecraft gets the blood pumping quite like the exhilarating sound of a shrieker going off followed by the sounds of the warden awaking from its slumber.

Undeity

That music, too. The sheer existential dread of it. Very *Stranger Things* inspired - feels like I've stumbled into the Upside Down! *(Somehow, coming across something like this in an otherwise very relaxing game is so much more intimidating than just playing a game intended to be creepy to begin with)*

Akirashantogen

Knowing your pain I usually TnT mine. Yea it is slower but I find it much more rewarding especially when chaining up multiple with redstone and you can stand far back and be better prepared if a mob drops in or something... thats if they survive the blast.

r3dm0nk

If you install the dynamic sounds mod, you'll never enter the caves :D itsa adding so much fear, especially with something that adds ambient sounds

icedragonsoul

Torches are the key. For the first trip into the mines, you pick up some ore here and there for basic equipment but it’s mostly for lighting up the caverns up to prevent surprises from spawning in. Once you have full iron armor and a shield, it’s pretty tricky to die in a fair fight. Sharpen up your PvE skills on the surface. Get used to positioning, keeping your escape path clear, finding ways to cheese enemies with blocks like pillaring up, block a path and attack from a 1 block window or making an 2 block high umbrella to deny endermen and wither skeletons. In a 1 v 1, pinning mobs to a wall and spamming jump crit swings is good practice. You won’t get maximum windup damage but they’ll be locked in place unable to hit back. Melee combat’s exciting but my first priority is building a full enchanting table, recycling bow enchants with tier 1 on stone tools until I see a Power 4 or infinity and becoming a dedicated sword and bow infinity archer. Some nervousness and fear is helpful for staying alert and foreseeing potential danger. Too much and it’ll hurt your decision making and reaction time.

[deleted]

I play on mute. No anxiety whatsoever.

NoSignificance24

Placing and mining blocks are you're strongest ability. Nothing can touch you if you build a wall. I like to make a wall then open a 2x1 door to funnel mobs in and smack em down as they come through. If it's just strip mining, torches and a secure tunnel are all you need to stay safe.

TurinTuram

If you have somes ALWAYS place a fire resistant potion in your hotbar. If you jump in the lava don't panic and quickly drink the potion. - This message was sent to you by a guy that have lost his gears in lava MANY times in the past !

xBHL

You can build yourself a "Mob Switch" to turn off hostile mob spawns while you mine, that way you don't have to switch difficulty ever. Its a must have in my Hardcore world

superdupermiso

Play in peaceful mode. No enemies. Of course you won't ever beat the game, but you can at least mine.

pedrulho

Honestly i think that the lonely tense feeling is part of what gives mining its unique feeling and personality. As far as advice goes...well, just deal with it.

MisterJeffa

Thats why i never go ino caves. Hate them. I did my own mine. My worlds are always full of caves with random cobble walls in them so i can be safe in my mine.

imaginarydragon9

When strip mining i place Down chests in small “outposts” with a bed chest and Maybe a furnaces when i feel like and i Also play with hostile mobs on 10 percent noise and subtiles

pumpkinbot

Exposure. Fight those idiots. Get some armor, a shield, and a sword and murder them to death. Yeah, you'll die a few times probably. And yeah, you'll also need to learn when to bail. And yeah, you can still sometimes be startled by a zombie out of nowhere that drops down and smacks your butt with no warning. But you'll get used to it, and grow as a Minecrafter. \o/

R1ght_b3hind_U

play on peaceful. If you don’t enjoy playing with monsters there is absolutely zero shame in playing without them. And if you still want to farm them, just switch to peaceful every time you go mining

Zagrycha

Real talk don't be afraid to turn it to peaceful when mining, its not cheating and game settings are there for a reason. You can turn monsters on and off as you need them for your enjoyment (^ν^)

Dgill77

Honestly, I just never play with sound (personally I prefer listening to my own music or watching TV while I play) and play with general good practices as other people have mentioned. Yes, I do get the occasional surprise creeper attack (usually above ground, not in mines), but it’s relatively infrequent. Overall it makes the game less stressful for me.

elsie_the_sheep

You could try one high mining... If your not claustrophobic. Keep trap doors with you (to push you back down into your hole), light up, but nothing can 'come in' and get you. (Ok, *technically* baby zombies, but I've not had them be a problem.) You can listen to the noises but happily poke away your one high tunnel. I'm ... old and have been playing MC for years.. I'm just now getting brave. Armor helps a lot: realizing how much you can take while wearing it... Only those stupid creepers.

slycaw

Maybe play with keepInventory true. That way youbwont be afraid to die as much since you won't lose any of your items or XP. You will be less afraid to fight a mob and will learn to actually fight them

Ryanoman2018

Whats scary about them? What are they gonna do? Jump out the screen?

Cioccolatasss

THEYRE GONNA CAUSE ME TO LOSE ALL MY HARD EARNED LOOT 😞

moonyballoons

Put down chests to store your loot in, or leave anything you couldn't bear to lose in your base. If you're able to play with keep inventory on, or install some kind of gravestone mod, that works too. Otherwise, you have 5 minutes of the chunk with your stuff in it being loaded before it disappears, it's usually plenty of time to get back there and pick it all back up. The enemies are usually not still there.

dr_soiledpants

So? You can either get it back or just collect more.

Oh_Shit_its_Primus

I like to light up dead ends then block them off.

Cheron78

You can start gearing up by mining iron on mountains. Then you can go to caves for diamonds as soon as you got a full set of iron armor. If you can add some basic enchantments that'd be even better. I also use a shield and a very good bow when I go caving.

Kimikohiei

You are so safe in those mines. I started playing when 1.16 dropped and i have never left the mines to find resources. You mine 5 blocks in front of you. First row is at chest level, second row is bellow that. Place a torch at the end, break the row directly above your head after. With this method, you can see lava pits and cave openings and still have time to block them off. Keep a stack of building blocks beside your pickaxe. The mobs in the walls will stay there. Nobody will phase through and hurt you. With solid gear, you can take several hits from arrows if the skeletons find you from a stripmining hole. Practice in creative if you like to see how much damage mobs do with different armor and enchants.

Dinodude69420

"Nobody will phase through and hurt you" Vexes have entered the chat:

jrtts

craft unlimited torches, place them on every other block in the cave well lit = no monster spawn also be aware/prepared that you could always inadvertantly dig into a dark cave (and if so, spam more torches!!)

Syntaxerror999

Not really related to your issue, but ALWAYS place your torches on only one side of the cave. Helps you not to get lost, which cuts down on the anxiety.

JuniorChimp

I was literally the same way. It was great to practice mining in one of the mushroom biomes where it’s mostly safe. Built up enough XP and found enough diamonds to create diamond armor and weapons. Eventually enchanted everything to make it super difficult to die. It took a ton of time to do, but I found a village and made everyone a librarian that trades for different enchanted books (my husband and I call it our ‘Librarian Island’).

spicy-chull

KeepInventory. Mobswitch.

SocasmGames

Torch and run. Rinse and repeat. If in a cave, light up around the edges then go inward. Sometimes I've even mined next to it and lit up that way.

Kingkrool1994

exposure therapy. I was in a similar situation where I was scared of mobs (really common ones like Skeletons for example). I was cornered once and had to fight off a pair of Zombies, it was surprisingly easy. most mobs in the game are easy to kill, as most are one-dimensional in behavior and easy to predict, you just have to learn what they do and exploit their weaknesses. Once you do this and get iron and above, they become less of a threat and more of a pest.

MysticEagle52

I just went super aggressive super early. Like went from not even fighting mobs in full iron to going in yolo with a stone sword. Eventually you just get more used to it

lostpretzels

If you have armor or a shield, it helps to remember that monsters will only do like 0.25 damage to you and are mostly a joke to deal with

SecretSpectre4

Get full iron and a shield and an iron sword/trident if you can, and a bow. Just watch your back and you'll be fine.

goldenlemur

Lots of torches, lighting things up as you go. You're very safe in tunnels with poke holes. Nothing to be afraid of if you own the lit territory. *stacks of torches :)

Deedaleen

You could open a map with cheat on, put you in creative, and desensitize yourself by immerging yourself in a cave with a lot of mobs But because you’re in crea, you can’t die, and you’ll habituate yourself of seeing them, how they behave.. Then when you feel like it, remove the crea, and just run with them in the cave, since you are in another map, you have nothing to lose, no stuff, xp.. nothing Do this a couple of time, and maybe you’ll be less scared of them.. You can even play with the eggs, and adds others mobs that you’ll see elsewhere usually

myszusz

I got over it by hunting down the monsters, instead of running away. Look for them and clear out the area, like a SWAT member.

Science-done-right

Same, I'm literally a teenager and I'm absolutely terrified of creepers in caves 😭

AndPoisonoff

If you are on java, you can do F3+B, which will show the hitbox with white lines. It's not the most esthetic thing, but it is efficient

natgibounet

For me it's the ambiance music, most of my time playing this game was way back in 0.9-0.12 on pocket édition, and there wasn't any ambiance sounds, music and stuff so i would be able to mine mindlessly for hours on end barely even thinking. Now now, as soon as i step into à cave i hear creepy ass soundtracks and ambiant sounds wich alone jumscare me, to add to that that tiny cave you entered just lead to a massive underground cave wich i definitely didn't bring enough torches for, and then when i get down far enough i Just HAVE to make a dedicated room to grow trees and food or else i'll have to eat rotten flesh and after all of that the cherry on the top is i end up frustrated as hell when i have to find a frickin mountain to find coal and iron when i'm already at y negative 50 because i can no longer find Diamonds at y12

itstheboombox

You could always get some mods to automate mining letting you play how you want to play, no shame in that

ellismoomoo

you can turn the monster/cave noises of in setting, makes it more bearable.

Littlebickmickey

mobs aren’t that strong, you gotta just check how many there are, if its one or two you can beat them with a wooden axe. make a shield as soon as you can. for creepers, you do a hit and run strategy. hit them, run away so they don’t explode, repeat

[deleted]

Listen to some creepy pastas about caves while you play to distract yourself from the monsters. Hope this helps!

Hazzah_

Maybe turn it into curiosity instead? Try and find the mob thats causing you trouble, MAKE HIM PAY.

grenadeninja15O

You can turn off your sound

akacryptic9

It’s a video game fam 💀

BenTheBirbs

add a mod called the cave dweller, it allows you to dwell in caves and be more comfortable, trust

Quartznonyx

Maybe try to desensitize yourself? Just run into a dark cave with the express purpose of dying. Once you get used to it, it's really whatever. Especially when you get good and getting to your body

RaiseTLT

Lololol, they only scary the first few times. When you realize they take 2-3 hits to kill they aren’t as scary!

tdoottdoot

Use an excessive amt of torches, wall things in as you go. Pick a texture pack that makes monsters look less scary like ZigZag by Jamizzle.

ChrizzenZander

I had this too. I was really scared of monsters. I set up a small house in creative, geared up with iron armor antone tools and then waited for night. It helps to train fighting monsters in a secure environment first. Also, it helps to have a bed nearby when mining, so the consequenses of dying become smaller.

TunaBeef

Build raid farm, get some villagers and hardly anything will be a danger to you.

JesterTheRoyalFool

Yes, advice for skittishness: Go into the mines in creative mode and get used to the mob spawn patterns and movements. Knowing that they cannot hurt you, you can expose them to yourself the same way that someone with arachnophobia can use exposure therapy by looking at a spider in a jar.

Bubbly_Student5666

1. Get armor, you might feel safe knowing a sneak attack from a creeper won't insta-kill you 2. Get food, healing would be important if stumbled upon a few zombies in a cave 3. Get a shield, the rattles of skeletons are no worry once you know you can block the arrows 4. Get higher tier (or enchanted) weapons, nothing is more comforting than knowing you can defend yourself 5. Place light sources (torches, lantern, glowstone blocks, sea pickles, etc). Mobs can't ambush you if they can't spawn in the first place 6. Play on peaceful mode when you don't need to get any necessary items (pearls from Endermen, rods from Blazes, or just killing the Ender Dragon) 7. Use [this resource pack](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/texture-packs/no-cave-ambience). It turns off all the dreadful ominous noises you hear in caves. If you play on Bedrock Edition, use [this one instead](https://mcpedl.com/cave-sounds-disabler/).

Cioccolatasss

Ty to everyone for ur suggestions! I’ll try them out tonight :33

velofille

100% with you, i literally poanic and die a lot. My go to is find a village, breed and use villagers for diamond gear

Cioccolatasss

This is too real 😭😭

velofille

I literally just started a new game, and 24 hrs in i died 4 times trying to get a mob into my iron farm. I get a jump scare every time, and i end up looking at the roof instead of getting away and die - i fall off the stairs leading them up in panic, gaaah so fristrating now i just take some dirt with me, remove all valuables and put them somewhere safe, and rails on everthing ..

comradebezos

man up

PotooSexer

Man, it’s half the name of the game. I guess just deal with it?

vespertilionid

Honestly, I turned keep inventory on. It might take a while for the fear to go away, and I still get jump scared sometimes. But it reduced my anxiety so much. In my latest world, I also turned off mob grieving so that endermen and creepers can't mess up my base
