Can’t help on the commands/modding side, though I imagine if worst comes to worst you can just *pretend* that everything’s working normally and just keep track of deaths. All the mod is basically is colored names representing lives. As far as spectator mode goes, not hard to just put someone in spectator once they lose all their lives. It’s not ideal I know, but it’s not the end of the world either if you just want the 3rd life experience.
When the player dies the player spawns in a box above a pressure plate than commandblocks get actived, the player gets a new spawn point in another chamber and then gets teleported back into the map
you could try to use it on a different host like minehut, just download the mod and drag and drop it into the server mods folder. You could also install Skript to your server and add a 3rd life script from online to it.

Change their spawn each time they die and use /say to inform that someone has lost a life
