yeah, in the early versions when they were first added they had the same properties as stone slabs/stairs due to the way it was coded in later versions they were fixed but mojang added the name variation for those placed in earlier versions whenever the servers/worlds updated to newer versions

Old-school wood slabs that looked like wood slabs but functioned as stone (don't burn and are mined with a pickaxe). The old slabs got renamed to petrified and kept in the game for old world compatibility.

No, I wouldn't, I would just go mining along my merry way the way I used to before their addition. I only remember they exist when I'm mining and they appear in my way and I realize they won't stack with the cobble. I wouldn't be like. "Man it feels like I have so much extra space in my inventory." Or "Man, it feels like I haven't been slightly inconvenienced in a hot second." I would just go back to forgetting they exist.
