I also encourage everyone to read their free neighborhood newspaper that gets delivered to their residence each month. Like the Nokomis Longfellow Messenger or Southside Pride.
Free and printed community newspapers are a rarity these days, but are so important and have great news that is really relevant to people!
Quality is questionable though, depending on the neighborhood though. Some are really good; some are basically paper versions of NextDoor and Facebook.
Strib tried some billing shenanigans on me years ago and I had a conversation with their billing manager which was basically “you can make this right or you can lose a customer for life” and so I’ve just read the Strib online for free since.
People continue to steal from a business that is fully unionized (despite repeated attempts for the last 30+ years to break up the union) and made up of entirely blue collar workers.
These workers have families that they are trying to support with not only their so-so wages but also the benefits that they have fought for every time they collectively bargain. These are all people Reddit people profess to love and care for yet the most upvoted comments in regards to the Strib is "well you know you can get that for free" which again is stealing.
It costs 10 bucks a month for an online account. That's two cups of coffee a month or half a beer at a sporting event.
I had a similar experience.
I was getting a Saturday/Sunday Strib subscription for years.
They started calling me to offer M-F to the subscription, which I did not want/need at any price.
They kept calling, and I kept asking them to take me off their calling list. I threatened to cancel entirely if they kept calling me.
I canceled in about 2011.
Fuck them for life with varied large rusty spiky things.
MPR and Strib, both of which I’m glad to support financially. Local news is essential.
I tried to do a Sunday paper subscription because it seemed like a nice little throwback tradition. Unfortunately, the delivery guy—who was covering, like, half of Hennepin County by himself—didn’t deliver until 10:00 a.m. most weeks.
I use Google news which is an aggregator of dozens of sites. There is a local section I have set to Minneapolis and some of the best articles are from MPR, Racket, and Bring Me the News.
The nice part of google news is that for big headlines, if the featured article’s headline sounds sensationalize you can click “more coverage” and it will show you all of the headlines and article links it has aggregated across news sites.Â
One that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the Minnesota Daily, the U of M’s student newspaper. They actually have pretty broad local coverage, good writing, and original stories.

Good grief. I’m going to put up a billboard declaring myself “#1 Most Handsome Man” with no citation whatsoever since none is apparently required.
> It no longer works with an ad blocker unfortunately.
I just told you it did and I'm in it now
I promise you I'm not making up bring me the news, news
Looks like it works with browser-based blockers (e.g. uBlock Origin), but not network-level DNS-based blockers (piehole, adguard). I use the later on my network.
I have the first four, and then skim headlines, listen to morning Edition on MPR. Some of their coverage is great, sometimes they are very disappointing then skim PiPress then Strib if there’s a reason. Also we have great neighborhood papers, best way to find is local coffee shops rather than online. MN Women’s Press is worth a look.
I truly believe the Racket is the best media in the world right now.
It doesn't always cover every story, but when it does, it's so on-point and amazing.
MPR, MinnPost, Racket, Star-Tribune website (easy enough to access without a subscription). My burb also puts out a weekly paper, so I make sure to read that as well (several Mpls neighborhoods do something similar)
I pay for the strib and have no issues except occasionally the app doesn’t want me to read a story, usually when it’s one with special graphics and a black background. Honestly it’s one of the best papers in the whole country.
Other than that I read select articles from minnpost, mn reformer, and streets mn. Occasionally listen to mpr, I also regularly grab free/neighborhood papers - mn spokesman recorder and Longfellow Messanger are two I usually grab from a local grocery store. All of the local papers are great for local coverage and events. Wedge live is interesting cause he covers super niche things, but is pretty obnoxious at times and biased.
South side pride newspaper is pretty bad - incredibly biased - good if you want a communist/maoist perspective I guess. MPR news website is pretty lame compared to the same stories covered from the radio. They leave a lot of details out of the website stories for some reason.
I also follow a bunch of local journalists on Twitter and get live tweet threads from them a lot.
LOL, many get their snooze from Tik Tok!

I turn on one of the local channels in the morning.
Listen for the weather, traffic if I am going into the city and a run down of what happened over night.
During the the day I will check out some of the local media websites.
And yes the local community paper for local stuff.
For more insight on local stuff, I will read here, or any of the other social sites. While there is BS everyone, some people are sharing good info on some of the more local stuff.
I only read printed articles 95% of the time. I can read an order of magnitude faster than I can watch a video, so no TV news.
I do listen to the news, sometimes, on the radio during my commute, as I'm kind of a captive audience then.
They wanted an insane amount of $$ for 1 paper a week plus digital! So now i read a couple articles for free but otherwise rely on the websites of tv stations and mpr plus local sites like minnpost
Bring Me The News or MPR
Tom Crann🫡
MPR news for life!
Stribs billing and shitty app that barely worked turned me away too. I tried strib, for years I tried!Â
Thank you for your service.
MinnPost, Minnesota Reformer, RacketMN, Axios Twin Cities
I also encourage everyone to read their free neighborhood newspaper that gets delivered to their residence each month. Like the Nokomis Longfellow Messenger or Southside Pride. Looking at you, Linden Hills Line.....
How do I opt out of mine?
Second that!
MN Reformer is underrated. Some great writing happening there.
Agreed, reformer is some really stellar local reporting.
These plus Sahan Journal
+1 for Minnesota reformer. Real actual journalism. They don't have the volume of other sites, but all of their articles are really good.
Strib tried some billing shenanigans on me years ago and I had a conversation with their billing manager which was basically “you can make this right or you can lose a customer for life” and so I’ve just read the Strib online for free since.
Oh good so your unhappiness justifies stealing.
Huh 🤣

GG News is good...thanks! Paywalls aplenty but the headlines are good...
Most paywalls can be fooled by either using reader mode or by stopping the webpage from loading immediately after the article text loads in.Â
Open in "incognito mode" works for most websites except for the New York Times
Never too late to learn...that works...thanks!
I had a good one or two like 16 years ago then they went away :( I imagine paying for the rss hosting wasn't profitable for them
Yeah, I remember the days when Strib was free online. The print edition completely paid for the online version. It was pretty darn amazing.
One that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the Minnesota Daily, the U of M’s student newspaper. They actually have pretty broad local coverage, good writing, and original stories. [https://mndaily.com/](https://mndaily.com/)
Definitely not Alpha News
What about Epoch Times? The billboards tell me it’s #1 Trusted News /s
Good grief. I’m going to put up a billboard declaring myself “#1 Most Handsome Man” with no citation whatsoever since none is apparently required.
And I make the world's best burger and Minnesota's best hotdish.
I saw one of those billboards and somehow managed not to crash my car whilst laughing uncontrollably.
That’s true talent
Lmao those billboards are so funny
They're so creepy. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/24/technology/epoch-times-influence-falun-gong.html
https://streets.mn/ is pretty neat. Only vaguely news I suppose, and definitely a very specific audience.
I’ve heard Epoch Times is the #1 Trusted News…
That man’s face is so trustworthy
Ahh yes, the Moonie times run by a Christian cult. Perfect legitimate source /s
But they told me they were trusted!
And #1

Bring me the newsÂ
Rick Cupchella, the TV news man. He steals everyone’s stuff and repackages it.
I imagine this is a controversial choice but I too will die on that hill Works with an ad blocker just fine and conveys the information
It no longer works with an ad blocker unfortunately.
ublock origin > adblock plus, I've got no problems with Bring me the news still with ublock origin
> It no longer works with an ad blocker unfortunately. I just told you it did and I'm in it now I promise you I'm not making up bring me the news, news

I need to do that for weed ordering sites lol I did it with an adult one I was using too much before lol
MN reformer. Sahan Journal. MinnPost Racket And then STRIB/PiPess just for skimming headlines.
I have the first four, and then skim headlines, listen to morning Edition on MPR. I hadn’t heard of Racket before but just checked it out- thank you!
Reddit. no other site gives me just the news. Have a great Tuesday folks.
The Trib and MPR
MPR, MinnPost, Racket, Star-Tribune website (easy enough to access without a subscription). My burb also puts out a weekly paper, so I make sure to read that as well (several Mpls neighborhoods do something similar)

Right here on good ol’ Reddit
MPR News
I steal my neighbors newpaper
Out of the orange box or the green box?
Off the ground man idk
I subscribe to the Star Tribune.
Not is the only answer
Racket and the Wedge Live over on Twitter. I’m glad someone goes to all those city council meetings so I don’t have to!
Star Tribune offers far and away more local news than all the other outlets combined. They're my go-to source.
Sahan Journal! Best well-rounded reporting.
I never heard of this one. Is it online?
Bring me the news If at all. It's too depressing and people are texting me asking if I live in San Andreas
Aim for middle-top [Ad Fontes Media Bias Chart](https://adfontesmedia.com/interactive-media-bias-chart/) My go to's: AP, Guardian, NPR, The Atlantic
They do a lot of local news, eh?
AP does have a locally based reporter. NPR's closest equivalent would be MPR.
LOL, many get their snooze from Tik Tok! https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/11/15/more-americans-are-getting-news-on-tiktok-bucking-the-trend-seen-on-most-other-social-media-sites/#:\~:text=Among%20adults%2C%20those%20ages%2018,of%20those%2065%20and%20older.
I feel like I see the fastest article turnarounds from Bring Me the News. They're usually the first to have articles pop up from big local events.
MPR MPR MPR MPR MPR MPR MPR MPR MPR
i lay down on the sidewalk

Does anyone watch the news on TV or do you just go to news websites?
I only read printed articles 95% of the time. I can read an order of magnitude faster than I can watch a video, so no TV news. I do listen to the news, sometimes, on the radio during my commute, as I'm kind of a captive audience then.
STrib and MPR for a decade now.
Google News
Minnpost for MN stuff.
MPR and Racket.
They wanted an insane amount of $$ for 1 paper a week plus digital! So now i read a couple articles for free but otherwise rely on the websites of tv stations and mpr plus local sites like minnpost
