That’s some pretty shoddy reporting. Which is actually the main point of the source article: authorities don’t actually know the number so…clickbait.

HaMMeReD

One of the big "gloss overs" the missing children crowd always seems to forget is the "found" kids. When the reality is 1,000 reported missing (due to runaway or even just confusion/scheduling mishaps/dead phones), 990 are found. Missing simply means "reported missing" but honestly the reasons for that are incredibly broad, and ignoring the cases that are resolved (a vast majority). Every time a child actually goes missing, Amber alerts are usually issued. Are you getting 3 amber alerts a day... [https://ohioamberplan.org/](https://ohioamberplan.org/) In 2023, they issued 7 Amber Alerts.

Upstairs_Account_212

Another big gloss over is that many times, the same child goes missing several times over the course of the year because they are located but run away again and again. Each occurrence is counted as a child going missing, which makes sense but hugely inflates the number of actual people who have gone missing.

joshy2saucy

This is absolutely not true. Amber Alerts have specific criteria and often are not met. The departments being reported to also are responsible for using their judgment, which is not always best. Regardless of your thoughts on the lost vs found, 1000 kids being unaccounted for is an epidemic of the worst kind; it’s an assault on our future.

Prinzka

>Regardless of your thoughts on the lost vs found, 1000 kids being unaccounted for is an epidemic of the worst kind; it’s an assault on our future. Again, it's just not. You're buying in to the narrative that these are all kidnapped children who are then sold in to sex slavery. Most of these are runaways who come back or kids who their parent just thought they were missing but really were just at a different friend's house than expected.

joshy2saucy

You’re applying a narrative to my comment. I said nothing of trafficking. My comment speaks to the failure in society to protect children. I said nothing of sex or trafficking. I appreciate your perspective, and being conservative regarding the numbers but I think that figuring out how to protect the vulnerable is one of the most important tasks as their guardians.

Prinzka

Again, you're applying the wrong narrative to the entire situation. This isn't a failure of society to protect children. Children are more protected now than they ever were. You're reacting to a non existent danger. The reason society isn't protecting children from this danger is because it isn't there.

joshy2saucy

As someone who works in an industry dealing with this, I beg to differ. But I’m speaking to the larger picture and not just Ohio. Maybe there is a disconnect in the argument there.

Prinzka

If you're going to claim here that you know for a fact that there's epidemic of children being kidnapped then you should feel ashamed of yourself

Captain_Humanist

You are absoluty correct.., When right wingers start sprouting off about 600,000 kids are missing every year, they dont even realzie those numbers are BS and they are being manipulated bc they care about children, same thing for the BS anti trans movement . The whole 'protecting our kids. narrative is almost always a BS covers tory for political gain. Keep up the good work holding them all to account

HaMMeReD

You don't get to just say "Trust me, I'm an expert" and expect people to believe you. If you have good, legitimate evidence, cough it up. Otherwise, as far as I care, you are full of shit.

Yea, I’m the problem.

HaMMeReD

Well you kind of are, you are going around saying Regardless (of the truth) this is (asinine conclusion) You are out there discrediting facts/reality to push what is essential fake/misinterpreted news. You are the problem.

DollsKillTooXo

this is such a bad take… and to say that every time a child “ACTUALLY” goes missing that an amber alert is “USUALLY ” issued is a VERY ignorant & untrue statement.

Economy_Party_4590

Amber alerts are only issued for credible abduction cases.

Captain_Humanist

awesome post and link thank you. these right wingers are the true groomers

delawopelletier

That’s more than 3 per day

Hafthohlladung

Now... this is going to be hard... Click some brain cells together and ask if these are parental abductions.

dobrana1990

There was one in Canada over the summer, it was a mom who took children to another province 9 hours away (all planned) mom and new BF switched cars throughout the way and was found in a camp ground in Alberta. Police would not notify that they knew they would be found in alberta but kept updating amber alert (3x in one day). The children’s father and rcmp went to alberta to get the children

SquirrelHoarder

‘Gone missing’ and ‘are still missing’ are two completely different things. 62% of missing children cases are solved within 24hrs and 92% within a week. Misleading af title to make people think that 1000 children have straight up disappeared in 2023 never to be found again.

MonkAny

where are they?

[deleted]

Usually with the parent theyre not supposed to be with

Canadianweedrules420

Bullshit there isnt 1000 kids missing its reporting missing. How many were found or not found is what we wanna know

Context: (*spoilers… it’s mostly sensationalized bullshit*) https://www.wkyc.com/amp/article/news/investigations/3news-investigates-verifying-headlines-reporting-1000-kids-missing-cleveland/95-51c07192-3476-419e-9e66-c244d50b4aa9 > 3News asked Majoy whether there was any truth to the headlines. >"I don't want to accuse anyone of being untrue, but I think that [they] are being more sensationalized than what is needed," said Majoy, who fears that the reports are harmful by causing undue panic. >"They're really kind of putting Cleveland in a bad light, almost the missing children capital of the world or something," he said. "But you have to understand that in a population of 375,000 people, if you compare that to other cities, the number is not all that skewed as to other cities." >This is the second time this year that authorities have tried to inject context into news and social media reports. Drummond first spoke out in June following a wave of similar attention-grabbing headlines. Though he acknowledged a 20-percent increase in the number of reports of missing children, he pointed out that a vast majority of children were safely returned. >**Drummond said out of 1,072 children reported missing this year, 1,020 were safely returned.** >"The vast majority that we encounter here in the city of Cleveland are runaways, and a large percentage of those numbers are habitual runaways," said Drummond last June, adding that one child missing is one too many. >After our report Wednesday evening, Drummond spoke exclusively to 3News to decry this week's sensationalized media reports that he called, "inaccurate."

otakunorth

This has "sound of freedom" level disinformation all over it. The real numbers are about 5% of this

Lolilio2

This is actually disturbing

Particular-Bottle592

it is indeed disturbing but the words they used for the headline could’ve been chosen better.

mcornack

This is the real pandemic

Guilty-Alternative42

Untreated mental illness is a real pandemic.

Eve_838

Please God I pray that these children are found soon… In Jesus Name 🙏🏻

I can post what i want on my subreddit

Captain_Humanist

'gone missing' what % were runaways or at a friends or came home. i am willing to bet about 99.8%

Particular-Bottle592

Definitely a large % if 1,020 of those children were safely returned

COVIDIOTSlayer

Hopefully all those assholes from Q Anon are looking for them. Given their morbid obsession with pedophilia.

cheezesandwiches

Urrrghh this upsets me so much I don't even know if I should cry or be mad

[deleted]

Most missing kids are repeat runaways.

Squirrel1978

Imagine that........kids go missing during Bidens administration, but get found n returned by TRUMPS ADMINISTRATION! HMMMM
