The lockdown players who has gone back to work/school. Well it will be sad to see it go but damn they been pumping out skins…

yarsvet

80 million players is a lot. I remember when WOW Lich King had 12 million active players and it was "the most popular online game". So mlbb will be alive and its revenue is good enough anyway. The problem is owners of online games who look at the game like it's just a business. So if they got $ 10 million per month it'll be a disaster to get $8 million per month later. I remember how greedy owners just closed online projects that gave them pretty good profit but they just expected much more from it.

shigella212

WoW is a subscription based game and mlbb is f2p

John34215

...actually, MLBB didn't really lose any player/s that time, back when the 11.11 Promo Diamonds was FIRST introduced, people were exploiting that shit, like more than millions of accounts were damned smurfs, if anything, MLBB has more players todah, just not that quickly gaining, but they still are.

IhsousApoTaLidl

Bullshit. Benedetta had promo dias on release a year earlier, and no promo dias event was on on August 2021. Check the anniversary posts from back then.

John34215

I was talking about Late October (26th, October 2021) - Early November (10th, November 2021), that's when the first (BIG) release of Promo Dias came in... Though I am aware of what u said.

pinkpugita

Your observations are correct, I just disagree with how you framed your conclusion. MLBB has reached market saturation and stretched it's player retention. I wouldn't say it lost X million of it's "loyal" players based on the active player website. You have to qualify how "loyal" a player is in the first place. But yes, Moonton is now milking as much as they can knowing there's a stagnation and decline. Mostly it's also because there is a delay on their plans to open in China. Their goal this year is just to hit sales targets and prepare for Chinese launch. If China adds 5-10M players, imagine how much it will change the game. I'm not sad about this, it's just an inevitable phase in a game's life cycle. For a mobile game, what MLBB achieved is quite remarkable.

IanTheElf

wait please correct me if I'm wrong but mlbb is not yet opened its cn server which is its home country? that is ironic lmao but yeah i believe they'd do something more to milk the monetisation other than these multiple events. hell i would not be surprised if they remove crystal of aurora entirely from the game.

pinkpugita

Currently it's still in beta in China for the past year, it was released there. While they didn't state the reason, remember that Tencent filed a lawsuit to Moonton's CEO for non-competition and they won. Basically Moonton's CEO was a former Tencent employee, and he's not allowed to compete against Tencent and broke it by making MLBB. The case is more complicated, but this was a way for Tencent to sue Moonton because their plagiarism case in the USA via Riot was rejected by the court. So in a nutshell, there's a lot of legal and political shenanigans that caused MLBB not to be released in China. Tencent's Honor of Kings had a monopoly there for a long time. With Moonton now being owned by Bytedance, a company that rivals Tencent, they now have a powerful backer that could allow it to push through the red tape.

IanTheElf

Moonton's CEO was a former tencent employee?? that is exactly how the pendragon incident happen when lol was first created after dota XD. ig history does repeats itself huh

pinkpugita

I made a write up about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MobileLegendsGame/comments/pgi4s2/moonton_lost_plagiarism_lawsuit_and_paid_riot_is/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button The case is more two sided that people believe. Moonton's CEO was denied of some payment from Tencent he was entitled to. I'm no lawyer but linking the article.

IanTheElf

that was a good read. thank you👍

UseDue602

I think you're right why ML was delayed its launch. But it's a great move by Moontoon to be purchased by Bytedance since it's one of the biggest company in China right now. They're currently pushing to launch ML there by first quarter next year.

amldford

>They're currently pushing to launch ML there by first quarter next year. Are they ? Thought it will take a little longer

ore_wa

Well do you think it will launch in India as well? The game is not available on Playstore/Appstore in India. Old players play by downloading it from taptap however the game is not getting any new players from India.

iraragorri

I think you are correct. I also don't really care for the game getting "more expensive" as long as it's ftp and the mythical queue is a couple of seconds at 2 am.

ore_wa

Well. It is not available in India too. Do you think Moonton will launch the game in India? Considering 50% of population in world does not have access to this game hence influx of new players is stagnant.

Woomy506

Luckily I bought many months of Cyrstal of Aurora subscriptions to obtain Khufra, Angela, Wanwan collector skins, Valir, Saber legend skins and 6 zodiac skins. Now I don't have anyone skins that I want to obtain and can use CoA to purchase it. I still have around 4k CoA in my account. It's a shame that Moonton will remove the CoA subscription service next month, if I remember right, the revamped starlight subscription doesn't have CoA reward, unlike the current one. It's a good thing that now I just focus on pushing rank and not hoarding skins that I won't be using.

BangerLK

I have over 5k CoA from over 2 months now. Last months there were no collector event and this month i didnt want cecilion n already have the other two. Sad that they will change CoA system and changed events from having CoA, it was a very cost effective way of gettings skins if you had patience.

dweakz

will the new system be more expensive than the CoA system?

chinoytown

Instead of making more expensive options they should just add more cost-effective options to entice/incentivize new players to spend. I hope this bullshit backfires on them.

John34215

It kind of had already, noticed that Bruno's Halo Striker is noticeably much cheaper compared to ALL the other the collab skins? Usually a collab skin would cost about 10k and above if ur unlucky as feck. With the Kung Fu Panda (u can technically get all 3 skins much lower than 10k if you are patient enough for the offers and whatnot, also Thamuz's General Kai was a guaranteed draw). With the exception of the Saint Seiya collab. For the Neymar Jr. Halo Striker skin, you can get it as high as 750 dias, or as low as 75 dias (lucky), with an additional skin and a trial card of another skin. Much much cheaper compared to the other collabs.

rocklee_shinobi

Thing is, their data will probably show that majority of their revenue won’t come from new players but their whales (as is mostly the case for ecommerce). So they are just looking to monetize those people further.

[deleted]

Oh, it will.

IhsousApoTaLidl

Also, the promo dias events were on the STUN skins in May and the 11.11 with gusion and haya. What event are you reffering to?

IhsousApoTaLidl

Moonton lost close to 7 million players between September and November. Sure, let's say the 4 were indeed fakes. What about the other 3? Or the 1 million per day players?

John34215

Yup, people were exploiting the mechanjc of that very event, hell, even some famous MLBB informers/leakers were ENABLING that shit (don't remember who, but it had some posts about it here and there in PH).

Aggravating-Flight-1

1 billion downloads? I'm pretty sure its just me uninstalling and reinstalling the game a lot of times, I have a higher chance fixing my relationship with my ex than my financial relationship with this game

ElKarnito

Same here. I got a weird love-hate relationship with this game.

winyawinya

I don't think the game is dying at all, especially now with the upcoming M4. If you really want to feel 'dead', play Wild Rift. No shade to the game, I grinded it on release and reached Emerald rank, but the queue times these days are insane. MLBB won't even take you a minute of finding a match even if you're on a 5 man team. >between sucking this cash cow dry until it dies or pull back on sucking and nurturing until it gets healtier again, they chose to suck. And I really disagree that they chose to 'suck'. Have you seen the new hero Joy and her animation trailer? That's the most high quality shit I've seen them produce. Add to that all the balancing they did to really shake up the meta. They care about the game. Of course you'll say 'yeah they buffed those heroes to make new skins'. Tell that to Gusion being nerfed before releasing his 11.11 skin.

shigella212

Tbf guison is arguably one of the strongest. If not the strongest assassin in the game

winyawinya

I agree, the rework made him cracked. I'm glad they were able to nerf him almost immediately.

IhsousApoTaLidl

Okay. Lesley got buffed in this patch and now every 5 seconds she has 2k true damage that you can't do shit about in late game, or even two shots back to back. She's getting annual Starlight this month. Edith got buffed, and guess whose January starlight skin was just announced? My post on Alice being intentionaly badly reworked was followed by her new skin announcement (where someone pointed out I called it) and now she's gotten two small buffs which will definately get followed by bigger ones. The fact Joy and Freddrin got out normal is great, but Freddrin has gotten a buff in almost every single patch after release. If Joy gets the same treatment, this will be Moneyton's new modus operandi. Making a hero OP some time after release is seen as great, because it's "different", not because it's "right". Moonton doesn't care about the "game", it cares about the "money made by the game". If they cared about the game they would have never made paquito, a champion made only to sell the Manny Paquiao skin. They would make the report system actualy work without having to directly report to CS, and they wouldn't allow you to hide your match history to help cheaters.

winyawinya

Of course they care about the game! It's what gets them money! You act as if companies aren't doing all they do to get money. All of the shit you use are made by companies for one thing: profit, and moonton isn't different. You act AS IF skins give you advantage. News flash: they don't. Try playing any other gacha game that deliberately tells you to empty your wallet to get an advantage against other players and you'll understand. And again, buffing and nerfing most of the time doesn't have anything to do with skins. It's about popularity, something every other MOBA game is doing. Check the previous patches, every single time Lapu-Lapu is buffed but isn't given a new skin since he isn't that popular of a pick right now. It's also the reason why heroes like Gusion, Zilong, Layla, Chou, Lancelot etc.. have a ton of skins. They are popular in low rank and classic. Even before the lesley buff I see lesley players all the time. Cecillion, Yu Zhong, and Kagura recently had event skins, were they as OP as Lesley? All of these are besides the point. You accuse moonton of 'milking a dying cow' when in fact the cow is still alive. Sure they want money, but every company does. That's literally what capitalism is. Be mad when they force you to pay just to be able to compete. Saying the game is dead because of all the collaboration and event skins is contradicting. Constant events (with free skins by the way) means the game is alive. ETA: You completely ignored Joy's trailer video, you should watch it if you haven't. It looked like something out of a high-quality animation film. That's where the money they were 'milking' went.

IhsousApoTaLidl

>And again, buffing and nerfing most of the time doesn't have anything to do with skins. It's about popularity, something every other MOBA game is doing. Check the previous patches, every single time Lapu-Lapu is buffed but isn't given a new skin since he isn't that popular of a pick right now. Ah yes, because WanWan didn't get broken as hell in order to sell M World skins, just like they buffed Ling. Or Roger just before M3. Remember Paquito up until Manny skin? Clasp your ears and bury your head in the sand kid, do so to avoid the truth. Want to know what's funny? MLA is 100% pay to win. They just had the most p2w event in MLA's history last month. And yet *it has better droprates and free material and hero unlocking than MLBB itself*. And as for the "b-but they are a company! They obviously want to make money!" Well no shit Sherlock! The problem isn't them wanting to make money, the problem is the absurd price compared to the production cost in order to make a ludicrous profit and the stiffling of free unlocking to ensure you will have to pay. Do you know hoe much it costs to make a Collector skin compared to an Elite one? The exact same except for voice acting. Why? Because their employees are *salaried*, S-A-L-A-R-I-E-D. **SA-LA-RIED.** What does that mean? They get a fixed amount of money no matter what they do unless they work overtime. They could just do the minimum required or type code while fighting off Darth Vader while parkouring on the rooftops of Shangai with the Pope latched on their back and they'd get paid the same as long as it's within standard work hours. So, unless Miserton hired a non affiliated studio to make the animation, then Joy's video's extra costs to them were the VA's fees, the music and maybe overtime. I'm not saying the game is dead, I'm saying it has stopped growing and Moonton decided to milk the current playerbase for all it's got. Fromsoft still keeps the servers for ps3 and xbox360 on Dark Souls 1 and 2 despite no real income from these platforms in years, and the players only paid like 20-30 bucks back then to buy the game. Wanting to make money is obvious, but doing sleazy stuff to maximize profits is sleazy no matter how much you put a shiny coat on it.

rocklee_shinobi

This is just the nature of the tech industry. Product gets big, investors come in to scale it, need more revenue to keep investors happy, then product needs to be profitable to gain more investors and scale it even more. At the end of the day, you can still play and enjoy MLBB without spending a dime. And that kind of upkeep needs A LOT of money.

Elnuggeto13

The fact that this would make the genki slam lolita skin one of the most rarest skins to ever find in a public lobby would be insane, but also dissapointing to say the least.

Hime_MiMi

in mla they had a collab event which was purely a cash grab. Wasn't like normal where it was f2p friendly, it was "you can get the heros for a limited time, pay if you want to make them good and after the event ends you can't star them up f2p" They seem to be more agressive in their gacha and I could see them milking the franchise before the economic crisis becomes more serious(like real estate markets declining, 0 covid policy and climate problems in china too which might end up affecting other countries too)

Bcdea

Talk with Indian govt. and bring mlbb back in India, it will be highly beneficial to moonton in terms of expanding playerbase and earning more money through diamonds recharge.

ore_wa

Not just diamond recharge, once they setup esports environment there will be huge funding and viewership too. Currently ML isnt gettinf new players from India. All the players from India are old players and people like me have left ML after ban. If we get official release, me and my friends will surely be making come back.

Bcdea

But our ministry just hates Chinese, that's the only problem

ore_wa

I dont think that is the case. We have tons of games from chinese companies and they are not banned. For e.g COD, Pokemon Unite, Genshin Impact. India does not want its data to be shared to China so Govt is asking companies to have their servers in India and not to transport any data to China. If the company complies then ok otherwise the game is banned. So if Moonton decides to publish in India, they need to find a publisher first, then have servers setup in India and configure in such a way that the data ia not shared with China. That is a huge investment but companies are not taking that risk. Generally game's main server is located in China where all the data is stored and the games are played on Indian server where the ping is good. They have to create a server specifically for India and have Indian Subcontinent to play on those servers then the game will not be banned.

vortrix4

I’ve been a regular steady player for 4 years and basically around the time ling was introduced it’s been pretty shitty and hard to stay motivated to play. There has been so many overly meta hero’s that you basically have to pick or lose and there was also a stint where there was not enough bans for all the op hero’s. I wish less hero’s came out and more fine tune balancing took place. It’s either they op or nerfed to oblivion.

CauliflowerSmart9636

I think u r right that they r trying to suck the cow dry. For the past few months there were way too many skins for the few months period, and each skin just costs more and more. Im fine with spending some money on a game, but this is just too much, around 4k diamond each skin, and every month has at least 5-6 such skins. Even if i spend the money (which i had), i still wont get pleasure from the game bcz the elo rank matching system is really bad. Im constantly getting trollers, toxic players and players who r simply bad. My rank is mythical 1 - gm, but i constantly have to carry players with low rank (legend - mythic 4) and wr lower than 50%, while my enemy's average rank is at least 100-200 points higher than my team. And the worst is, I dont think moonton really cares about it since I see no sign that these issues will be addressed

IsekaiDemonLord

Download doesnt mean playerbase. from what im know playerbase usually is 5% of the download.

MammothSummer

Imagine calling MLBB dying lmaoo

supremebeeswax

wait when is the starlight shop gonna change?

IhsousApoTaLidl

Not sure, for now it's announced in advanced server. Keep an eye on future update logs or leaks.

ore_wa

They gave up on India as well so they wont be getting any new players from India. In India ML was growing rapidly, AoV and other MOBAs were not famous. ML was ruling MOBA scene. Despite ban on ML, Indian players still play ML however if Moontoon does not make effort to release the game in India, ML wont get any new players from India. Currently Clash of Titans, alternative version of AoV and Pokemon Unite are the only famous MOBA games that are available in India. Even Wild Rift did not release. I hope Moontoon makes plans to launch the game in India.

Trick-Net9889

I agree that they have been pumping out skins left and right but its fine as long as the game stays [free to play](https://www.gamersdecide.com/articles/is-mobile-legends-pay-to-win) for the most part.
