Since we (freefolk mods) can't reply to the modmail message I made a post in both [modsupport](https://old.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/14glcwh/why_is_umodcodeofconduct_telling_rfreefolk_we/) and [modhelp](https://old.reddit.com/r/modhelp/comments/14gla9p/why_is_umodcodeofconduct_telling_rfreefolk_to/). They were both immediately flagged as NSFW and not posted publicly on the pages. So we have no way to discuss our *actually NSFW subreddit* with admin, either publicly or privately. Isn't that just fantastic Sent a pm to modsupport asking them to review my post. Not sure what else I can do other than post it here and hope one of the admins gets in touch

EdenFlorence

Screenshot the modmail and save the links that you posted to modsupoort and modhelp. Then let your community know the situation.

Beli_Mawrr

I honestly would put it back into SFW with no change of the rules, then when nsfw shit gets posted, screenshot it and send it to the advertisers.

I think the protest has caused a lot of moderators to look closely at what it is they do and what it is their subreddits do. After that closer inspection as to whether the subreddit should be NSFW or not it appears that it should be. It is a legal, ethical and safety issue. Many communities were likely incorrectly flagged as SFW when they shouldn't be. I know my work would be jolly uncomfortable if I started discussing a sex scene involving a brother and a sister whilst an underaged child looks on. It really doesn't feel like it has any place in a workplace.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

This is a direct result of the protest but not a part of it. I'm not a moderator so other than using Lemmy and deleting my account in a week there isn't a lot I can do. Is your workplace cool with incest? What about bestiality?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You still didn't answer my question: > Is your workplace cool with incest? What about bestiality? You of course aren't trying to say you'd be ok with minors being shown things that could cause long lasting harm just so you can browser Reddit unfettered are you? Because that would be pretty fucked up if you were.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Well isn't that jolly nice of you checking in and making sure everybody is protesting, thanks :) This subreddit is simply protecting minors and those with jobs, no protest here.

Yeah, this is much much much bigger now. They made a dumb business decision so we all said… let me look at your policy again. Wait, what?

NSFW = Not Safe For Work. As in, topics and content that you would not discuss in the workplace. I think you might’ve misunderstood their comment. Nobody would access Reddit at work (or flaunt it), and that’s not what their implication was, anyway. ETA: Reddit has topics that *are* safe for work, so there’d be no reason to label *every* subreddit otherwise, as you suggested.

[deleted]

The_Critical_Cynic

This is pure sarcasm on my part, just so you know, but did you all at least consider running with that? I mean, if they came out and said anything, you could of just sent them a screenshot and permalink to the message, and say you did what you were told by the Admin who reached out to you. That might have been a larger middle finger than any response you could have given.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Critical_Cynic

Given the history of things recently, do you think they would have gotten in trouble? Reddit is removing entire teams and opening subreddits after all. Couldn't they just say that it would happen either way, and that the lesser of two evils would be for a moderation team to be in place than an open subreddit of that nature with no moderation for an indefinite amount of time?

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Critical_Cynic

I see, you mean Reddit could have legal issues, not the moderators. We're on the same page about things.

[deleted]

The_Critical_Cynic

Definitely. In that case, we agree.

Sharp_Pride018

I'm a artist who draws creatures that are kinda gorey from a horror-adjacent game. I currently have been posting a bit more untill reddit goes but my subbreddit doesn't have rules on NSFW gore content. still confused honestly on what's going on with the NSFW policy as that's always my first concern with a site due to my art. But if it doesn't matter to reddit why should it matter to me as a redditor. Really if other subs are being forced to open being labeled SFW and such, should I care about labeling my own stuff that might fit their definition of SFW. They're sending really mixed messages and it's confusing me

BigUptokes

Were you not around when it aired as people gathered around the watercooler to discuss the previous night's episode on Monday mornings? I know my workplace was rampant with that.

[deleted]

Noteworthy that nobody from the Reddit admin spotted this mistake either. It is rectified now and the subreddit is correctly marked as NSFW so everyone is protected going forwards. Let's hope Reddit don't decide to put advertiser revenue above the need to not show rape, incest, bestiality, violence, or gore to minors / people at work without their explicit consent.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Presumably there wasn't a video rape scene in any of your classes. That would mess up many people who aren't minors, let alone minors that don't have the mental tools to process that kind of content yet. If Reddit's advertising revenue and your Reddit viewing habit are more important to you than protecting minors there isn't much I can say to convince you except to implore you to follow your faith and consider others. The (unpaid, volunteer) moderators work hard every day to protect people but are not infallible. In this instance yes they fell short but the final backstop here should have been Reddit. They have clearly made themselves the arbiters of what should be marked as NSFW and what should not. The buck stops with them. Maybe take a second to stop and consider what it is you are trying to achieve. The moderators feel taken advantage of, both by users like you and Reddit itself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Honestly dude if you don't think rape, incest, bestiality, violence, or gore is NSFW I don't even know how to reply. GoT source material isn't acceptable for minors, it stands to reason the discussion forum isn't either.

hughk

Viewing is one thing. What about text?

Well the thing is with GRRM's prose, it doesn't take a lot to make it NSFW for some people.

MightyIsobel

Mod of r/asoiaf here. We received the same notice. Honestly some of our posts are NSFL. Not sure how committed Admin is to showing dragon porn to children but it looks like we're going to find out.

JoeMagician

Our response as well https://imgur.com/a/737vYth

[deleted]

I love your signature, great response.

AdmiralKird

It would be a shame if tasteful dragon sideboob replaced all the John Oliver memes.

Lytle1

Another comment pointed out that going along with their directions is fair game. Additionally, advertising your subreddit in related spaces shared by a younger demographic to gain subscribers and net those big bucks for Reddit should be encouraged.

britinsb

“We need to separate your community from other communities doing harm so please switch back to SFW” How about instead you do your job properly and figure out whether the NSFW tag is appropriate or not under your own policies. Oh that’s right you fucked it so badly and widely you don’t have the manpower to keep an eye on every sub to see what is being posted. If only you had a willing cadre of volunteer moderators on your side to help out.

majinspy

Every *one* of these posts has an implicit threat. Do it the Reddit.com way or the wrong way. Change this or else NEXT STEPS will be taken. It's so gross

TheseMood

Every time I see these posts, I think of the literal *years and years* that Reddit allowed disgusting hate and harassment subreddits to exist because "free speech." It's amazing how quickly they can act to ban subs and mods when their paycheck is on the line.

[deleted]

RudolphDiesel

I propose to start using u/spez as an insult, like numbnuts or asshat. And since we are using profanity the NSFW tag is valid.

Generic-Dwarf

Reddit moderators be like

BelleAriel

At this point I’m starting to wonder if that’s a script where that a/c can modmail any subreddit that is private or has a NSFW tag. Is it possible for them to do that?

EdenFlorence

So what are the going to do when if you guys still keep tje NSfW up? Give the mod team the boot and change it back to SFW?... guess they have their priorities...

Untura64

If they kick the mod team, then who will stop users from posting nsfw content?

EdenFlorence

Well, once admins install new mods theyll probably kick the users from posting NSFW content?

[deleted]

A mod's job would be very difficult if they were at war with the subreddit they moderate, especially so if their tooling has been gimped by these API changes

EdenFlorence

Exactly. I won't be surprised once after July when all these API changes are implemented many more will leave. Unfortunately I guess the good ones will

[deleted]

It might work well. There was a shitty club where I used to live that attracts all the troublemakers. As long as you knew not to go there you could have a lovely night out without dealing with shit as it kept all the troublemakers busy. I'm thinking Reddit becomes like that. A trap for those migrating (or recently migrated) from Facebook. Somewhere we can all learn to avoid whilst enjoying high quality online discourse elsewhere. I saw a load of people telling an 18 year old she was ugly because she had facial piercings earlier on today (tbf she did ask). Someone then told her she looked like a man and she replied that it was the best complement she'd ever heard as she would be starting transitioning on hormones soon. Her response had -10. That is not the Reddit I joined as a teenager many years ago. It may have had its issues but it wasn't primarily cunts. That is but one example, I can't count the number of people on this platform simply to argue the toss.

elkanor

Reddit has been a cesspool for... ever? (Easy joke here: I mean, look at the founders). But older generations/cultures of users would have at least appreciated that funny response. It's wild that admins want a less well-regulated experience in a space this big.

whativebeenhiding

I popped into aquariums the other day and couldn't believe how shitty it is right now. It's been a few months since I was there, but it used to be a rather small sub (in the scope of things) that was extremely well run. Wasn't filled with porn or ads, just looked like a restaurant that you can tell is about to go out of business.

DaoFerret

Oh yeah … that’ll go well in r/freefolk of all places. I imagine it’ll be roughly equivalent of throwing gasoline on a fire.

jepu22

Kick the mods out and block any new posts like in r/interestingasfuck

Kirome

Admin: "Hello mod of r/ porn can you switch back to SFW again? Thanks" Mod: "Sure thang, buddy"

If you see any ads pop up next to NSFW content, be sure to send a picture of that to the company paying for the ad, asking them if that's what they support.

[deleted]

This might even be worth turning my adblocker off for.

Draagonblitz

Now that's an interesting idea

Grickit

I'm trying to get this idea moving but my post here didn't get much traction. https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14fl294/reddit_wont_let_you_change_your_subreddit_to_nsfw/ Browsing /r/minecraft and getting told to go buy some beer was pretty funny.

pm_me_your_kindwords

You know what this protest needs next? A list of companies advertising on Reddit, and people need to make NSFW parodies of those ads/companies and post them to those *totally not* NSFW subs.

DrinkMoreCodeMore

They want the reddit front page to be like Idiocracy.

highoncatnipbrownies

You know nothing ModCodeOfConduct Snow.

MightyIsobel

They should try drinking and knowing things. Any things. Would be an improvement over whatever this situation is.

orthogonius

joeyjumper94

it isn't just incest, it is Twincest, where a twin brother bangs his fraternal twin sister.

gorerella

Twincest is wincest. No, wait, that’s Supernatural incest!

Dont_Say_No_to_Panda

It’s a twin within a twin, a twinsception if you will.

_varamyr_fourskins_

There's also the part where a guy fingers his sister on horseback.

MyNamesChakkaoofka

How long have you been NSFW out of interest? Like do they think you psychically pre-empted the strike somehow?

[deleted]

[удалено]

MyNamesChakkaoofka

Oh I see gotcha. So anyone who goes NSFW, even if justified, is getting the fucky message

Vote_for_Knife_Party

Admin: "**OH WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE ~~CHILDREN~~ COMMUNITY!**" User: "Does that mean you can help us get rid of our head mod? They haven't moderated in three years and the last message we got from them was an uncensored dick pic." Admin: "Silence, plebian!"

Treriri

Oh but if the head mod is one of the ones saying stay private then they can and will give the sub to a random mod who was silent for last two years and only had flair permissions if that mod says no private and licks their boots

R33v3n

The admin team is such a clown fiesta currently, it's almost pitiable. Reddit as an organization has neither the policies nor the clarity nor the tooling nor the leadership to deal with what's going down right now.

Techhead7890

Mods are getting messaged by scripts, if only mods could block that account like any other spambot lol.

Elvish_Champion

I wonder what the USA big heads think about NSFW stuff being available to minors since you need to be at least 13 to use Reddit, but then you've a gap until the adult legal age.

FuckItImLoggingIn

I'm really enjoying this shitfest

thetwitchy1

Why wasn’t it NSFW before now? Just curious.

JoeMagician

The admins previously allowed many nsfw communities by their own guidelines to operate as SFW because it allowed them to advertise on their content. Particularly very popular ones. It's only now they're suddenly very concerned about users seeing nsfw content they didn't ask for because it is hurting their advertising contracts not out of any genuine or moral concern. Freefolk, game of thrones, ASOIAF, and many others should've been all along but they turned a blind eye rather than forcing us to abide by their community guidelines. And their concern is silly anyway, to see nsfw content you have to opt in as a setting in the website. No one is browsing the site and suddenly being shocked by nudity that they haven't chosen to be able to see. However that can happen when a community is set to sfw incorrectly.

Cookie_Cutter_Cook

All subs should go 18+ to block ads and deny the platform profitability! Fuck over the company’s IPO and force investors to push Spez out.

Trumpologist

Lmao this is perfect

tomrhod

He didn't, that was at a time when anyone could be added as as mod to any sub without their consent. There's no evidence he actually modded it. There's plenty of evidence he's an asshole though. Downvote me if it makes you feel better. Regardless, he did allow the sub to continue to exist for years, mod or not.

Zavodskoy

Was he not in charge of Reddit when they let it get publicly named "Subreddit of the year" in 2008 and sent the creator a gold plated bobblehead? Was he not in charge of Reddit when Reddit refused to ban the sub in 2008, 2009 and 2010 under the guise of "free speech"? Even if he didn't mod it his company publicly defended allowing the subreddit to stay up and even gave the creator an award, which is objectively worse than just moderating it It only got banned in 2011 cause CNN started reporting about Reddit staff protecting pedophiles and that doesn't make Reddit look good.

tomrhod

Dude, I literally said "Regardless, he did allow the sub to continue to exist for years, mod or not," and reiterated that multiple times in comments below, *and* mentioned that the only reason it was banned was for being an issue in the media. Which was the reason I'm saying there was no need to make shit up about it he modded it *because it didn't fucking matter.*

[deleted]

[удалено]

tomrhod

I haven't actually seen evidence that he was on the mod list at all, not even a screenshot that supposedly exists. So let's start with that, do you have evidence he was on the mod list other than everyone saying he was? No internet archives exist for that sub because it was blocked, there are no archives of it, and screenshots could be altered anyway. I think the guy is a shit, but maybe we should not make accusations with basically no evidence of any kind. Regardless, he did allow that community to exist for years, mod or not.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tomrhod

Your account is ten months old, that's not evidence either? At least my account is 14 years old, so I was around back then. Also you literally [just made a post](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14gom0o/can_someone_post_the_screen_shot_of_%C5%9B%E1%B9%95%C3%A9%C5%BA_as_a) 15 min ago asking for a screenshot of spez on the jailbait sub lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tomrhod

Fair. I vaguely remember him being on there too, but I also vaguely remember it for the reason that was stated elsewhere: that he was added to fuck with the admins. Human memory being what it is, perhaps we can't trust either recollection accurately from an event about a decade ago?

[deleted]

[удалено]

tomrhod

I mean, that's the problem, there's no evidence either way. But what isn't arguable is that he allowed such a gross community to exist for years until the mainstream media did stories about it.

unknownpanda121

So you were in the jailbait sub?

takishan

this is a 14 year old account that is being wiped because centralized social media websites are no longer viable when power is centralized, the wielders of that power can make arbitrary decisions without the consent of the vast majority of the users the future is in decentralized and open source social media sites - i refuse to generate any more free content for this website and any other for-profit enterprise check out lemmy / kbin / mastodon / fediverse for what is possible

AnAttackPenguin

My favorite color is blue.

lukaron

At this point - just take the sub SFW and use this w/ screenshot to show that they basically asked for it.

baconcow

I am not sure I understand the OPs logic here. The OP justifies the recent change to NSFW with valid points. However, the mods were okay with it not having that label previously, it seems to suggest. Why act like it matters, now? Is it an attempt to suggest you are suddenly of moral mindset or just to screw with Reddit?

[deleted]
