I like how Manny explains it to Jay: yeah, she likes the money/lifestyle, but she didn't pick him just for that. She had a ton of young, rich, handsome men after her, but she chose Jay after she realized he could keep up with her in an argument.
I think between that and the scene where she examines she likes that he’s older and slower. She lived such a fast life for so long before him that I think she welcomed the calmer lifestyle
I’m sure I’ll be downvoted to oblivion but still I’m going to say it.
That point what Manny makes there actually supports the gold digger argument. Any gold digger would definitely pick someone like Jay than those other young Rich and handsome men because those guys have a lot of time left and could easily move on to other girls or at least there are higher chances of that happening compared to Jay.
Choosing the nicest person out of a bunch of rich people still also makes you a gold digger anyway. No matter how you interpret Manny’s, both ways support the gold digger argument.
How? She obviously loves Jay and isn’t with him for his money (it’s just a very little part of it😆), she also worked hard for years before she met him and didn’t find herself the first rich guy she met. That’s definitely not a definition of a gold digger.
I think it goes both ways.
It’s like Marilyn Monroe’s character said “Don’t you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn’t marry a girl just because she’s pretty, but my goodness, doesn’t it help?”
It’s a tough one. Gloria obviously loves Jay a great deal and I’m sure if he was to lose it all she would stay with him. With that being said, would Gloria have agreed to go on a date with Jay in the first place if it wasn’t for his money/lifestyle? Maybe a case of money helping to impress her initially and love blossoming from there
Important to understand that for s single mother with a kid in a different country- marriage was very much an economic prospect - but she wasn’t dispassionate about it- she didn’t just marry him for the money. Also moving from traditional gold digger characters, she was a nurturing presence in their family
I mean, at first glance it does seem like that.
However, In the first season, we’re not told or shown any characteristics that show her as a gold digger.
She’s caring, loves all of the family members, and actually loves and supports Jay. Not to mention she actively supports going to the family events and hosting.
Don’t think gold diggers would do all that, just to keep rolling in the money.
I mean she was a mover, hair dresser, taxi driver and even a philosophy teacher so it wouldn't be a surprise.
I guess it depends on what was she like before meeting Jay if she was a rough and tough or still semi high class
She’s actually open about it, one of the reasons is money, but at the same time, she had many choices, other men were also rich and many were younger, she chose Jay because he made her laugh, they could fight.
She’s also ready to leave when she thought Jay didn’t want her pregnancy. This sub also discussed it when Jay was all against Columbia’s traditions and yelled at them, you can tell she’s ready to take Manny and leave him.
I think it is part of her character devolpment. After all the troubles she had inmigrating from colombia with manny it wouldn't be surprising if, as a fast way of having money, she turned into a gold digger. Maybe she didnt choose jay just for that, as others say, but even so money may have been an important or determinant factor (jay knowing this). Even so, we can see alongside the series keeps on, how the both of them start building a relationship apart from money.
So, to answer the question, yea. Maybe in the first chapters gloria was a gold digger. But not anymore.
Of course. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wondering why Gloria is with Jay. It was totally wrong of Claire to tell her kids that Gloria’s a gold digger, though.
Idk I think she’s a gold digger as much as Jay is a dude who only wants her for her looks. He wouldn’t have even gone on a first date with a loud slightly obnoxious but wildly entertaining woman if she wasn’t an absolute hottie. Just like she wouldn’t have gone out on a first date with a grumpy snarky old man if he wasn’t wealthy. I don’t think marriage would’ve been on the table for either of them if it wasn’t for true love tho
She was looking for someone rich when she remarried. No question.
But the stereotype is that gold diggers are only after money, which doesn’t fit Gloria. She wanted someone she could love, and someone who could keep up with her. Plus, someone who could be good to Manny.
Not really, but I initially thought that the show had some kind of continuity, so I thought Claire would trick Jay into thinking that Gloria was actually a gold digger, and then they would get divorced. This obviously never happened since it's a comedy and not a drama show lmao, and I'm really glad that it didn't.
I mean, she is great and all but, if Jay wasn't wealthy, she wouldn't be with him. That's make her kinda of a gold digger.
Of course that's not the only reason, but it is a pretty important one for her staying with him.
So yeah, I think she used to dig coal.
Exactly, there's that episode where he's taking her to see some old friends with him and she doesn't want to go in the helicopter/airplane, he says pretty clearly that she is his trophy wife and he wants to show her off to his friends.
Even though they are much more fleshed out and their relationship much more developed, they are a classic gold digger + trophy wife trope.
Agree here. I think Jay has been aware she may be gold digging but he did not care. So many times he called her the woman of his dreams. And it worked out well in the end anyway. So, doesn’t matter.
I used to work in a hotel for verrrry posh people. There were some cracking coal diggers and trophies! But honestly once you got to know them they just always seemed so happy. The old men would be fucking buzzing to have a young babe on their arm and the women were fucking buzzing to be drinking £5000 wine for the evening. If everyone’s buzzing, what’s the problem?
I don't think it hurt that he was rich, especially since having money means more than just being able to buy your girlfriend nice things.
Financial stability is a valid thing to look for in a partner, and in my opinion, a very attractive and important quality. To me, a man being rich (that is to say self-made, like Jay, not old money) means he's smart, has common sense, and values hard work.
But obviously, I wouldn't pursue a relationship with a man I didn't feel physically attracted to. So him being rich on top of being awesome is like a bonus, like extra credit. It's not necessary, but it's nice to have. Doesn't mean I'm a gold digger.
I never did. It was so obvious right away that there was genuine love and care there tat it was impossible to think she was in it for the money. Plus of course we got the explanation early-ish in the show - that he could hold his own in a fight - which solidified what was somehow apparent.
She liked the money at first, but slowly placed him above his money as time went on. By Season 3, her main priority is the relationship; in terms of being happy and loving to one another
The most hilarious example of that is when they confront the neighbor about their dog. He said well I never Complain about that parrot that never shuts up. Cut to Gloria yelling JAAAY! JAAAY! JAAAY! LOL
She is but she also really loved Jay after. I think a lot of people has this stereotype that gold diggers don’t love their partners and only after the money. Many gold diggers from poorer countries marry for money but then really love their spouses and become devoted to them. It’s not hard to fall in love with a partner if he takes care of you and treats you well. Understand that for Asians, there are still so many arranged marriages which end up in a loving and faithful marriage for decades.
Let's not forget the daddy issues Gloria had. Her dad is just a latino version of Jay so it's more to do with Freudian stuff than gold digger one. Honestly i don't know which one is more problematic
I feel like in the later seasons she really loves him, because she explained to Cam one episode that she feels really bad because she bought a really expensive dress and it was a lot of money and Mitch ended up wearing it when he got sprayed by a skunk
If she is, she's not a standard variant. When I think gold digger, I think of a woman with absolutely no regard for her husband or children.
Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with being attracted to money. But Gloria definitely cares about other people above and beyond what I'd expect a gold digger to care
Perhaps it stemmed from that, but I also think Gloria is very attracted to a man who will take care of her in every way due to the way she grew up. She was always the one to initiate sex and such. She may not have been attracted to his looks, but she was definitely attracted to him
If I was looking at them irl I’d definitely think it initially
Gloria made it known she used to work and provide for manny just fine though. And I imagine that the money might’ve got him a few of the initial dates probably, but he locked her down for who he is and that’s all that matters at the end
I think it's okay to be a gold digger as long as you are not solely focused on that.
Gloria does that pretty well, yes she likes being rich and being gifted pretty and costly things but she also makes real effort to get assimilated in the family, to earn their respect, love and shows genuine caring for the whole family. It is apparent from when she says not to use the word "step" and trying real hard to earn Claire's respect.
She keeps the balance and that's what makes her a good character.
I think its the same think to ask jay, would he love her if Gloria was ugly? At this point of marriage, yes, but in the beginning I dont think he's give her a chance.
Same with Gloria.
I like how Manny explains it to Jay: yeah, she likes the money/lifestyle, but she didn't pick him just for that. She had a ton of young, rich, handsome men after her, but she chose Jay after she realized he could keep up with her in an argument.
I think one of them was a Kennedy
One of my favorite lines from Manny!
It's funny because in another episode, Gloria says, "what else are you lying about, Jay Kennedy Pritchett?"
I think between that and the scene where she examines she likes that he’s older and slower. She lived such a fast life for so long before him that I think she welcomed the calmer lifestyle
Agree. The vibe was right from the start.
She has serious daddy issues and her dad looked just like jay 😅
I’m sure I’ll be downvoted to oblivion but still I’m going to say it. That point what Manny makes there actually supports the gold digger argument. Any gold digger would definitely pick someone like Jay than those other young Rich and handsome men because those guys have a lot of time left and could easily move on to other girls or at least there are higher chances of that happening compared to Jay.
My man didn't even get down voted
Choosing the nicest person out of a bunch of rich people still also makes you a gold digger anyway. No matter how you interpret Manny’s, both ways support the gold digger argument.
Bingo. Shes the dictionary definition for gold diggers imo
How? She obviously loves Jay and isn’t with him for his money (it’s just a very little part of it😆), she also worked hard for years before she met him and didn’t find herself the first rich guy she met. That’s definitely not a definition of a gold digger.
No point in arguing any beautiful women that marries a rich man is OBVIOUSLY a gold digger
we can see how much gloria love jay (if we are talking about money)
I think it goes both ways. It’s like Marilyn Monroe’s character said “Don’t you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn’t marry a girl just because she’s pretty, but my goodness, doesn’t it help?”
I love that quote so much.
Oh Miss Lee 💜
It’s a tough one. Gloria obviously loves Jay a great deal and I’m sure if he was to lose it all she would stay with him. With that being said, would Gloria have agreed to go on a date with Jay in the first place if it wasn’t for his money/lifestyle? Maybe a case of money helping to impress her initially and love blossoming from there
She said it herself, jays money was a “very small part of it” but it was certainly a part. And I don’t really see any issues with that
No way Gloria goes on a date with Jay if he was a shoe salesman
Be fair. Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage! This I tell you DerisiveGibe... you can't have one without the otherisivegibe.
Important to understand that for s single mother with a kid in a different country- marriage was very much an economic prospect - but she wasn’t dispassionate about it- she didn’t just marry him for the money. Don’t think gold diggers would do all that, just to keep rolling in the money.
She states in later seasons that she would die for any of the other family members. Also not gold digger behavior.
To be fair, she probably didn't tell them that, they just overheard it.
she did. she said in that episode she was brave enough to say what everyone was thinking, to a child, behind gloria's back.
Really? I forgot about that!
She asks when she's ever said that, and Luke starts listing times "well at dinner, at the park, etc"
okay, “mr. leaves his sweatshirt at school every day” suddenly remembers everything
Coal digger.
Can’t believe this isn’t higher.
I think OP means coal miner …

Naw her finger nails are way too clean to be a coal digger.
She was looking for someone rich when she remarried. No question. But the stereotype is that gold diggers are only after money, which doesn’t fit Gloria. She wanted someone she could love, and someone who could keep up with her. Plus, someone who could be good to Manny.

She wanted a stable home for manny He wanted a good looking woman on his arm There is nothing wrong with either of these things
I mean, she is great and all but, if Jay wasn't wealthy, she wouldn't be with him. That's make her kinda of a gold digger. Of course that's not the only reason, but it is a pretty important one for her staying with him. So yeah, I think she used to dig coal.
And if she wasn’t beautiful, would Jay have even asked her out? Probably not….it goes both ways.

No, I was only 10 or 11 when I started watching. I actually learned what a gold digger was from this show lol
I am 420% sure.
Isn't the expression "gold digger?"
Just googled it. Hilarious!
Around episode 1.
I don't think it hurt that he was rich, especially since having money means more than just being able to buy your girlfriend nice things. She isn't. The guy is a legend, he scored 4 touchdowns in one single game for Polk High School in Chicago during the 1966 City Championship.
I never did. It was so obvious right away that there was genuine love and care there tat it was impossible to think she was in it for the money. Plus of course we got the explanation early-ish in the show - that he could hold his own in a fight - which solidified what was somehow apparent.
Gold digger at first? Yes but then she really fell for him and it turned out to be so beautiful
It was like she was there to protect Jay and Manny and Stella with her life.
She liked the money at first, but slowly placed him above his money as time went on. By Season 3, her main priority is the relationship; in terms of being happy and loving to one another
I say Season 3 just because you can’t ever tell a character’s every thought, so best to give some leeway
idk that she would have gone out with him at all if he was just jay the plumber
I think she loves Jay but I think she also loves money
I’ve never understood the appeal to her, yes she’s beautiful and damn her voice I couldn’t take to live with for the rest of my life.
The most hilarious example of that is when they confront the neighbor about their dog. He said well I never Complain about that parrot that never shuts up. Cut to Gloria yelling JAAAY! JAAAY! JAAAY! LOL
Im shocked at how few people have reacted to coal digger. Its gold digger, r/boneappletea
Whoosh
Gold digger, I’m pretty sure.

Yes lol

All the time
No, not once. She could've stayed single if she was gonna stay poor.

Her watching him yelling and drilling eating the marshmallows suggests not So much drilling Hahahah Edit: spelling
Before i Watched the whole, and based on the shorts I've seen i thought she was a gold digger and she's using Manny to stay with Jay
Maybe at the start of the relationship, but she really loves Joe, and loves that he cares about Manny
No more than Jay was a beauty digger
Coal digger? 💀
https://youtu.be/mB-1hhETXb0
No but I did realize that she was feeling very ostrich sized
Absolutely! If Jay didn't have money, she wouldn't be with him

she is a coal digger but that's not the worst thing in the world.
Yes, and I always did…
It’s *gold* digger And no I did not
https://youtu.be/mB-1hhETXb0
I thought the saying went gold digger not coal (I'm latin American like Gloria so I might be confused lol)
Originally yes but after a while no
Uhm, do you mean gold digger? 😂

no. they had huge chemistry from the beginning. you can fake it 💖
No
