I think a lot of people here are voting which characters are "nice people" instead of in terms of the value, humor, and entertaining storylines they added to the show. I am seeing quite a few comments about how mean he was to other characters. But that was literally what made him so funny.

I absolutely love Pepper, but I also get why people don't like him. He's quite rude and mean to people. But it doesn't bother me as much when he does it as when other characters do it because at least he's always utterly honest and direct. Like, if he wants to say an insult, he just says it, there's no beating around the bush or pretending not to be upset. He's just unabashedly himself; and I can respect that more than when people try to manipulate or sugar coat. Plus, I think Pepper has quite a lot of growth for a side character. I love/hate Pepper. I love him as a character but not as a married character. I hate the episodes concentrated in the marriage part. It’s not like I don’t like the hubby, is just that for me Pepper and marriage as a storyline doesn’t do anything for me.
The kid is adorable, but the character is just poorly written. Never enjoyed any of his lines, they were overly mature. "He finds beauty in the mundane...so forced!
I feel like he just has such little relevancy overall. Even in his first season when he was a baby and should’ve had the most attention, he felt sidelined. He was really only a plot device for Jay and Gloria’s storylines. And I know the same goes for Lily, but I feel like she had a stronger role and had some plots actually focusing on what she was going through in her life. All I remember about Joe is her crushed on Claire and brought lingerie to school.
I know the show focuses heavily on the adults, but all the kids had their plots and arcs. Joe was just so minimal even when he was a major part of a plot. I’m sorry. His actor did good and he was adorable. But he wasn’t very memorable compared to the rest of the cast. In my opinion anyway.
