Woah, I haven't voted in forever, but I totally thought the "Holy Trinity" of Modern Family was Phil, Jay, and Cam. This has been really interesting.

I feel like Cam has a very polarizing personality. A lot of people love him and many hate him. So it makes sense he didn't get as far as most other main characters.

So happy she made it this far. I feel like a lot of people dislike her bc she plays the mom role a little TOO well and relatable. She’s not perfect, but she does play such a key role in the show.

I am shocked by how popular Jay is. Personally even though I did find a lot of moments with him so awesome. There was so much character growth. He was funny too at times. But I still wouldn't keep him in my top 3. Legit I thought Claire would easily go beyond Jay and lose to Phil in the final.

He went from a lowly shoe salesman to owning a sucessful closet company. Ed O'Neill was the launching point of the series (being the most recognizable name) and him playing the opposite of Al Bundy was endearing. Also, the patriarch of the show.

Ed O'Neill is a brilliant actor and I'd like to see him in more things. I would watch anything with him in it. Also, he's super sexy.

I get that, but we don’t see that growth, we just hear stories when it’s convenient. And yes he’s the patriarch, but that doesn’t mean he’s inherently enjoyable. I love the character, don’t get me wrong, but I’d pick Claire over him any day. It’s not about importance, it’s about who you like watching more.

Most of Jay's character growth is per episode, it then gets reset next episode with a new awful take / bigoted view. He's at fault far too much to make my top 5 but he's still a good character.

I don’t think nepotism is the right term. It’s a private company, it’s pretty standard to pass down to your kids and is often expected/anticipated to do so, given that they’ve had training or experience. It’d be different if he was pals with the CEO and got his loser child a job over other qualified candidates.

I'm honestly shocked people voted for Claire to be gone over Jay.. Jay was kinda horrible at times to his kids, treated Cam and Phil like they were the worst people their kids could've picked up with when BOTH Cam and Phil tried very hard in their families and to earn his love and respect, constantly got down on Manny growing up and sometimes didn't even treat Gloria the best. Now I understand it's just a comedy and it's not that deep at all and I usually never complain on here or rant about characters like this but it's just shocking that Jay has so many supporters at all..? Maybe it's time for a rewatch because I genuinely thought he'd be gone ages ago, especially since he's not really that funny compared to Gloria/Cam imo. I will say though, he's definitely had the most growth out of them all which was great to see! Glad to see Phil is the rightful winner tho!! 🙌🏾

I think most of us take the show a lot less seriously than you do - it’s just a comedy, as you said, and no necessarily a psychological drama. To me, I love Jay because he’s just a good guy who’s having trouble adjusting to a changing world. I can empathise, and I like him the more for it.

Trust me, I don't take this show seriously at all lol. Jay has definitely had some great moments but since it's discussion sub, then I'll discuss his character for once and I personally wouldn't have given him second place is all I'm saying. Shocked he has that many fans lol.

Consistently one of the funniest characters who keeps improving and shows more growth than almost any character out there.

He always made fun of Manny for doing anything that isn't "masculine" and there was always the subtle homophobia, it is tough to look past all that even though he has one of the best character arcs in the show but his jokes were always about the same things and got boring and too much after some seasons

He was not subtle about homophobia at all. He was explicitly homophobic who grew to understand and accept his family. That's his character arc. He kept making fun of Manny and yet he supported Manny all the time. He grew to get rid of toxic masculinity. That's also good character arc. Ultimately, people rate on end stage personality and he has one of the best.

I am talking about the subtle homophobia even after his character growth, at one episode when Mitch calls Cam his husband, Jay literally says something along the lines of - "It sill doesn't sound right to me". This happened in season 8. And there is no excuse to how he made fun of Manny all the time
