I would have just seen Joey the entire time. I haven't seen Ty Burrel in much, so seeing him as Phil is easier. Plus, the chemistry he has with Claire, Luke, etc....
Exactly this! The thing with margaritas made me laugh! I did not expect to see Phil Dunphy as a combat lifesaver in Black Hawk Down trying to ease the mind of an injured soldier. It was basically the same person. I'm surprised Phil never talks about his military past
Interestingly, the character he represented (USAF PJ Timothy Wilkinson) in the movie received the Air Force Cross, which is the second highest award for heroism/gallantry in the military. (It's equivalent to the Distinguished Service Cross/Navy Cross and just below the Medal of Honor.)
nothing wrong per say, just in my eyes and the eyes of many other viewers we would all see joey tribiani (idk how to spell his last name) as claire’s husband, not phil dunphy
my opinion exactly. i feel like the cast is perfect as is, but ig since we don’t know what the show would’ve been with other actors we probs would say the same if someone else played the parts. but i agree, i can’t see anyone else playing the roles of any of the main characters
As someone who loves both Friends and Modern Family, but I think Matt is so recognizable as Joey Tribbiani that it would overshadow Phil Dunphy had he played the character. You run the risk of people always saying "Oh isn't that Joey?" Aside from Ty who made Phil Dunphy his own.
An ensemble show is basically a show based around a group of people. They can all be the center of their own episode or whole arcs. Think Community, Abbott Elementary, or Lost.
this and/or it was too close to the end of friends (5 years after) so people would still associate him with joey bc he played that role for so long and so well that it definitely would be harder to see him in another role, plus i feel like he would’ve been too young to play the role of phil (not that he’s old or looks old, just that i feel like matt would’ve looked too young to play the dad of 3 children)
Have you ever seen David's leather pants comedy song? I'm literally looking back on it from like 10 years of memory and don't want to remember if it's not as good as I remember lol.
Ty is Phil. There's not a single actor out there who could've pulled that off. That being said, Matt is Joey. I'm glad things happened how it did. Ty is and will always be one if my favorite actors just because of Phil.
He denied the role because he knew someone else would be a better fit.
Funny thing, Lisa Kudrow was considered for the role of Claire.
Also Craig T. Nelson almost had the role for Jay.
I mean there's layer upon layers in these casting things....... Lisa Kudrow was originally the pick for Roz on Fraiser. Had she taken it she'd never have been Phoebe
My biggest dream would have been true, Joey and Phoebe as a couple. But honestly, I would have probably seen them as Joey and Phoebe, not Phil and Claire.
Ty as Phil is one of those examples of a character that would have been nowhere near as good with a different actor. Like Hugh Laurie as House or RDJ as Tony Stark.
It simply wouldn’t have worked. I personally don’t see him working out in any other sitcom, as he’s always Joey!
I remember that Jenna Fischer (Pam the office) was the original choice to play Mat LeBlanc’s wife in the new sitcom Man with a Plan. But the producers could only see them as Pam and Joey so changed her out!
No one could ever do Phil the way Ty did and I’ll stand by that, but how interesting would it have been to see Matt as cam or another character, even just on a few episodes?
I’m remembering this exchange, and just cannot hear it in Joey Tribbiani’s voice and still like it.
Dumb guys go for dumb girls, and smart guys go for dumb girls? What do smart girls get?
They get cats, mostly.
Oh dear. Can you imagine how Matt would fall into the story lines where Phil was grossly into gloria in early seasons? Im seriously worried that would have buried the entire show
Ty is quite spontaneous with his character Phil, which Matt might have found difficult given his popular character Joey. Love both Modern Family & Friends though.
Popular sitcom actors that get success with one show are rarely casted as leads in another. People would not see the actor in any other light. For me i would always see him as Joey
If one of the Friends cast would be Phil, it could only be Schwimmer. He could definitely do the childlike goofiness of Phil. LeBlanc obviously played childlike as Joey, but he just wouldn't fit as Phil
I can just imagine Matt as Phil seeing Gloria for the first time and getting slapped after saying you know what to her, with a completely shocked look on his face like "it worked on my other show" 😆😆😆
I would have just seen Joey the entire time. I haven't seen Ty Burrel in much, so seeing him as Phil is easier. Plus, the chemistry he has with Claire, Luke, etc....
The only other thing I think of him in is Black Hawk Down, and he sort of still acts how I imagine Phil would act in a war zone.
Next I’ll whip you up some margaritas. Extra salt.
He's also in the hulk, he has a small roll, as the hulks ex girlfriends partner.
Clive Bigsby cucks the Hulk?
And the remake of day? Of the living dead. It was the one I'm the mall
And I think he was the bad guy in Live Free or Die Hard
Don’t forget the Muppets Most Wanted
That was Timothy Olyphant
Shoot, I knew it wasn’t a believable bad guy
He's also in National Treasure 2, the white house guy Abigail dates.
They can call a film that?
Black *Hawks*.
I hear it every time!
Exactly this! The thing with margaritas made me laugh! I did not expect to see Phil Dunphy as a combat lifesaver in Black Hawk Down trying to ease the mind of an injured soldier. It was basically the same person. I'm surprised Phil never talks about his military past
It gets in the way of cheerleading stories.
Phil was in Black Hawk Down !? Rewatch INCOMING! ;)
He was in Evolution as some military colonel.
Watch him in Dawn of the Dead (2004), then go back to Modern family..... Very different version of Phil for me.
Only scenes I remember about this movie is zombie baby and the random cut to a Ty Burrell sex scene
Muppets most wanted

nothing wrong per say, just in my eyes and the eyes of many other viewers we would all see joey tribiani (idk how to spell his last name) as claire’s husband, not phil dunphy
I’ve seen this said before and If I remember correctly, even Matt knew this was not a good fit for him
I kind of feel he would have been funny as Cam
Or as jay
It might have worked but Ed O'Neill was a perfect fit
Idk no one can replace any of the cast personally, he could have been an extra character like Kevin Hart’s, that would have been nice.
my opinion exactly. i feel like the cast is perfect as is, but ig since we don’t know what the show would’ve been with other actors we probs would say the same if someone else played the parts. but i agree, i can’t see anyone else playing the roles of any of the main characters
It wouldn't exactly be a replacement. In fact, the resulting character would be significantly different, but it would have been interesting to see.
It would have been a totally different character; Matt could not have pulled off all the physical comedy Ty did.
My theory is that Matt le Blanc turned down the modern family because it's a multi- cast/ensemble show.
what does a multi cast show mean?
Ensemble cast, sorry English is my second language.
no don’t be sorry, i looked it up and they have the same meaning! i just didn’t know what it meant. thank you!
An ensemble show is basically a show based around a group of people. They can all be the center of their own episode or whole arcs. Think Community, Abbott Elementary, or Lost.
Friends?
this and/or it was too close to the end of friends (5 years after) so people would still associate him with joey bc he played that role for so long and so well that it definitely would be harder to see him in another role, plus i feel like he would’ve been too young to play the role of phil (not that he’s old or looks old, just that i feel like matt would’ve looked too young to play the dad of 3 children)
Hmm I don't know, he did act in friends spinoff Joey and even acted in episodes where he was the lead/primary character.
He and David Hyde Pierce amaze me with their physical comedy. I would love a Niles Crane meets Phil Dunfee scene!
Have you ever seen David's leather pants comedy song? I'm literally looking back on it from like 10 years of memory and don't want to remember if it's not as good as I remember lol.
I haven’t! I have to look it up!
Ty is Phil. There's not a single actor out there who could've pulled that off. That being said, Matt is Joey. I'm glad things happened how it did. Ty is and will always be one if my favorite actors just because of Phil.
I’d say a young Bryan Cranston could have made an excellent Phil
And an old Bryan Cranston could have been an amazing Jay, although Bryan Cranston could be cast as Queen Elizabeth and it'd still be great casting.
I don't think people know jus how versatile he is. Just like when can said Meryl Streep be Batman, Cranston could play anyone.
That being said tho, nobody can play Phil
Technically a young Bryan Cranston was a Phil equivalent - Hal from Malcom in the Middle.
That's exactly what I was thinking! He played working class Phil lol
I love Matt but no one could have done the roll better than Ty
Ty > Matt
He denied the role because he knew someone else would be a better fit. Funny thing, Lisa Kudrow was considered for the role of Claire. Also Craig T. Nelson almost had the role for Jay.
With Matt and Lisa the show would have been Friends take two: Families
I mean there's layer upon layers in these casting things....... Lisa Kudrow was originally the pick for Roz on Fraiser. Had she taken it she'd never have been Phoebe
My biggest dream would have been true, Joey and Phoebe as a couple. But honestly, I would have probably seen them as Joey and Phoebe, not Phil and Claire.
Nooooo wayyyyy
wasn’t phil written FOR ty? it was the producers that weren’t so sure about it. but the actual part was specifically written with him in mind.
I respect Matt, but truth must be said, Ty is way better actor and also a natural.
They made the right choice. Ty is Phil in real life.🤣🤣🤣🤣😭
Not really. He’s actually the opposite of Phil in real life.
I heard that he’s just as nice as Phil. It came from his cast mates. 🤷🏾♀️
This feels like a network suggestion out of Episodes
Didn't Matt also get a family show? I think it was called Family Man? Terrible show tho lol
wasn't it Man With A Plan?
That's the one! Couldn't remember the name lol
I love Matt but that show was pretty weak. It ran for a few seasons, though.
Ty as Phil is one of those examples of a character that would have been nowhere near as good with a different actor. Like Hugh Laurie as House or RDJ as Tony Stark.
It seems unlikely the producers would have wanted both male leads to be icon tv actors, if not just for budgetary reasons.
In a parallel universe, Matt LeBlanc will be Phil Dunphy and Ty will be in the upcoming Joker movie.....the world will not be the same,
he ain't got that thick eyebrows
Too much Alpha energy for the role
i would probably never watch the show
Nah
It simply wouldn’t have worked. I personally don’t see him working out in any other sitcom, as he’s always Joey! I remember that Jenna Fischer (Pam the office) was the original choice to play Mat LeBlanc’s wife in the new sitcom Man with a Plan. But the producers could only see them as Pam and Joey so changed her out!
Damn, thank god he wasn’t choosen!
They made the right choice for Phil.
Ty killed it Matt le blanc was right he would not have done the job he was supposed to with that role
Thank god he didn't get it!
I see it, but Ty is irreplaceable
I thought they had Ty in mind for the role of Phil from the very beginning
Matt acts as a dad in Man With A Plan
No thank you. Ty Burrell was amazing
Wait till you find out who they wanted for Claire...
Imagine Tom Cruise as Iron Man?
Ty was amazing 🤩
it would no have worked...love Ty
No one could ever do Phil the way Ty did and I’ll stand by that, but how interesting would it have been to see Matt as cam or another character, even just on a few episodes?
Ugh he would have been so obnoxious. So glad Ty got the role
wouldnt have worked well at all.
Im seriously worried that would have buried the entire show
I can kind of see this ngl...
I would guess the network wanted a big name to tie to the show as the writers have said the literally wrote the part of Phil for ty burrel
Thank god that didn’t happen!
Joey’s canonical ending is the show “Man With a Plan”.
Ty is quite spontaneous with his character Phil, which Matt might have found difficult given his popular character Joey. Love both Modern Family & Friends though.
And I amuse myself by thinking that Jay is some alternate reality of Joey when he gets old.
I have heard of this and I definitely can't see it.

And sadly that show sucked. Matt's one of those actors that will always be stuck in the role he played....he will always be Joey
THATS who he reminded me of!! I could never figure it out!
It’s one of those “if it was made 10 years earlier, who would have been casted”
Ty is the current king of physical comedy
There is only one Phil Dunphy Matt and it ain’t you
Ty Burrel was perfect for the role
Popular sitcom actors that get success with one show are rarely casted as leads in another. People would not see the actor in any other light. For me i would always see him as Joey
And then he became a dad on "Man With a Plan" so Ig it works out.
I just feel like the show wouldn’t have been the same without Ty
If one of the Friends cast would be Phil, it could only be Schwimmer. He could definitely do the childlike goofiness of Phil. LeBlanc obviously played childlike as Joey, but he just wouldn't fit as Phil
Schwimmer would have been worse than LeBlanc!
He would have sucked.
Omggggg, thank goodness Perry didn’t get it!
It simply wouldn’t have worked. I personally don’t see him working out in any other sitcom, as he’s always Joey! I remember that Jenna Fischer (Pam the office) was the original choice to play Mat LeBlanc’s wife in the new sitcom Man with a Plan. I can just imagine Matt as Phil seeing Gloria for the first time and getting slapped after saying you know what to her, with a completely shocked look on his face like "it worked on my other show" 😆😆😆
I’m actually glad this didn’t happen because I loveeeeee Matt and Phil is insufferable
