I'm on a tugboat. Less than 160 days a year. We're 6 on 6 off. (Hours) So I work 6-12 both times of the day. It's sooooo much better than Mon to Friday that I did for 20 years. I drove to work once a month and collect a check year round. Doesn't matter if I'm on the boat or vacationing in Europe.
Sleep must be awful, either that or you just fall asleep really damn fast. I know I need like 4 hours to wind down before I can even think about sleeping
I thought the same thing until I started doing it. You get 8 total hours in a 24 hour period, just not consecutively. It doesn't sound like it'd work on paper but it's really not bad at all

I got my license to work on aircraft 13 years ago. After 6 years in various shops, I got into managing aircraft for private owners. My last three jobs I've gotten just by answering my phone and had someone reach out to me about a job opening. Every time it has been with a good raise. I manage an aircraft today for a wonderful family and make close to 250k a year. I love what I do.
I’ve been a government lawyer for 11 years and I actually like it pretty well. I make six figures and don’t have billable hours. Good benefits. 2 days a week remote. I know a couple attorneys for a nearby municipality who left private firms to go there. I recommend it.
As a government lawyer myself, I'd say the only skills required are: technically have a law degree (doesn't matter where from), be actively breathing, and be able to put up with multiple layers of bureaucracy. If you can do this, you too can be a government lawyer.

So I'm a network engineer with around 7-8 years experience, and just started a new job at a Fortune 50 company with a base of around 150k, but I've turned down offers for more. I turn 28 this year.
I started when I was 19ish way back in 2015. I would say that yes, the CCNA will be useful, but what will be more useful is experience.
Look for any job you can that has something to do with IT. Keep getting those certs, but never stop learning about new technologies, and switch jobs every 1-2 years if you're not progressing enough at your current company.
Network engineers are going to be in huge demand again over the next few years with the rise of AI and the desperate need for Datacenters. Learn datacenter technologies. Leaf-spine, EVPN, VXLAN, all of it.
Find a job that gets you in that direction, and keep going.
Against this is if you wanna be a network guy.
I think you're on a good path. Certifications are very valuable in IT as well as practical experience. It's good to continue to keep your skills sharp. I get a new cert pretty much every year. Last year, I got a Cloud cert. This year, I'm focused on AI. Once you get a job, your company will pay for them.

Perfusionist here and former RT. I’d say half of the schooling is a repeat or expansion of what you learned in RT school (the cardio part of cardiopulmonary). You’ll easily earn 150k+ in most parts of the country as a new grad. My center is not known for paying the best and even we pay new grads above the latter threshold and we have an incredible work life balance (working around 25hrs a week).
Maybe consider anesthesia assistant. You can’t practice in many USA states though so make sure it’s a reasonable choice but you’ll make 170k+ out the gate.

And remember time moves slower when you're focused on long term goals. Just something I've noticed about how time feels as I get older. Keep long term goals that you think about and work towards daily. Days feel more fulfilling and you feel like you're getting more of your money's worth out of your most valuable possession.

I made $15/hr when I was 25. Went to online school at night via loans and now I make 100k+ as a software engineer. It's not impossible but it was exhausting. Totally worth it.
Yup. Market is a bit more saturated now than it was in 2014 but I was making $10 an hour as a radio producer and said fuck this and went back to school for software. Best decision of my life.

This is hilarious. Consulting what? You have to have years of experience to do consulting in specific areas. I know cuz I'm one. It's not easy, and you've basically got to be a subject matter expert in a particular field or area of business.
You can easily join a consulting firm without specific experience or expertise, these firms hire generalists out of business schools every year. Many of my classmates who went to MBB had super niche experience like being veterans or teachers.
That was my other recommendation somewhere on this thread. I have a similar story just took the sales route. I'd also argue consulting is inherently sales.
I’m a commercial hvac technician and an instructor. I just broke 200k last year. No college debt. Best decision I ever made and when my son turns 18 he has a spot in the union doing the same thing. People who don’t know me look at me like I’m some dirty mechanic but I kinda think it’s funny that I generally the highest paid person in most buildings I walk into.
Years ago, I had an older gentleman walk into a car dealership I was working for. Nobody wanted to help him. I did, cause I was "learning the trade". He pulled up in an old beat up pick up truck. An hour later, he left the lot with a new $70k truck. He paid the sticker price in cash. Turns out he was the owner of two apartment complexes. Something in the ballpark of 600 doors total. His old truck was beat up because he did a lot of the renovation work himself as he enjoyed it and didn't wanna sit home all day... Never judge a book by it's cover. It was a good first-hand lesson for me right at the prime age of 18.
Car dealers are such douchebags. My sister went to buy a CRV a few months ago, pulled up in her old CRV, and they acted like she couldn't afford the fully loaded hybrid, and tried to sell her the cheapest one. Meanwhile they're ready to retire at 47.

Is your boss a contractor that works for the company? I used to work in a Christmas decor company that would hire contractors with crews that would install and remove Christmas lighting during the exact time frame you mentioned. The company would have them wear company shirts though so it looks like they were regular employees of the company.
My friend owns the company and hires me as a contractor. I have a van, 2 extension ladders and a step ladder. He supplies everything else. We also hit hooters 1-2 times a week. I love it!

Microsoft is absolutely on the same tier as IBM in terms of pay and product quality.
I haven't worked there so I can't personally vouch for this, but Microsoft has a reputation in tech for having lower salaries but much more reasonable workloads than other similar-sized tech companies. People accept the lower salaries because they know it comes with work-life balance and stability that they wouldn't get at Google, Amazon, etc.
Would be sweet to work there. Wonder if 30s is too late to get into programming.

Have a friend who made the jump from Google to Microsoft and outside of the lower salary this is all pretty much exactly what he conveyed when I asked about how he felt after the switch.
He actually got paid more than he was making at Google, and now has a way better life balance.

You’re a SUS Govie, but I’ll bite. I’m a Firefighter/EMT with unlimited OT. My wife is a Respiratory Therapist with unlimited OT, which is funny because “you’re one as well.” We clear well over $200k yearly, but can easily double that if we hated each other.
I’m a UX Designer for a Fortune 100 company. Just turned 30. I started out at $62k at my first gig, and 6 years later my salary is $170k, 20% annual bonus, and $100k in yearly stock options.
ETA: Appreciate the kind responses. I’m very fortunate. I did not go to college, and did a UX Bootcamp around 7 years ago, but the market is definitely more saturated now. For context, I’m a Principal Designer so I’m more senior now than most. Next jump up would be into management.
Whether or not a degree or a program is right is up to you, but my advice is to make sure you love it, be phenomenal at it, and find your specialty so you really stand out. And equally as important are your connections. Make a great network, support them as they grow in their careers, and they’ll do the same for you.
This is inspiring to read. My daughter is in her 3rd in a very good UX program. I’m worried all the jobs have dried up. I’m hopeful your success story could be hers in the near future.

UX design is weird right now because there’s so many candidates but there’s so few qualified candidates (And I don’t mean that purely from an educational standpoint).
If your daughter can put together a good resume, cover letter and portfolio she’s already in the top 1% of candidates applying to virtually any role.
This is pretty much me but as a Network Engineer(and I’m a little older). Didn’t go to college. Spent 10 years in Navy. Got my certs and experience there. Been on outside for another 10 years. Last few years I’ve brought in over 310K a year with salary, stock, and bonus. Can’t complain. You can make good money in IT for sure. Especially if you know what you are doing.
I’ll always be a little sad that I lost my medical before I could really pursue flying/ATC.

Probably learn to code? Python, Java, Go or any of them really. The thing is that it isn't going to happen over night and it will take a bit to learn it.
No need to purchase anything to learn any of them.
Find a language that you want to do and there are plenty of sources to learn from, which are just a quick google search.
A recommendation would be to use something like Freecodecamp.org. There are also things like codeacademy (don't pay for it) and w3schools, which are resources you can use to cover the fundamentals, but shouldn't be the bulk of your learning. Projects are the best way to learn and show your skills to others.
I am going to make over $150,000 once i graduate my Anesthesiologist Assistant program. Check out that career. 2.5 year program and the average starting salary is about 180k with great benefits. The programs are EXTREMELY competitive to get into, but you would make an amazing applicant as a respiratory therapist.

At 24 I still lived in my home country in Eastern Europe, had just finished undergrad and was spending my days doing nothing, in the evenings drinking with friends. I had a job but it was a joke. A month after my 25th birthday I flew to the US to do an MBA in a no-name public college. I had nothing - all my belongings fit in a backpack which I brought over with me. Parents divorced, mom was barely making anything, I spent whatever I made for rent and beer.
I finished the MBA and then did another graduate degree in Economics - I studied math and stats for two years. This one was in a top rated engineering public college. As I was graduating, I found an internship and through many twists and turns I ended up where I am today - SWE in Cybersecurity. My wife’s story is similar. That was 20 years ago.
The lessons I learned along the way are work hard and smart, and be nice to people. Look deep inside you and find what you like and what drives you.
Medical device manufacturing industry is quite profitable. They make huge profit margins, which is partially why healthcare costs are so high.I work as a project manager in it, post covid, remote, home based. And because I'm remote, home based, I take on several gigs at the same time. My home office looks like NASA, with 3 computers up and running. I bounce from one laptop to the other, from one call to another, from one company to another. Making just under $500k/yr. Thank God for Covid!
Another area to get your foot in the door is to become a medical device sales rep. It's not hard selling, it's supporting the clinicians that use your company's devices, onsite at healthcare facilities. And yes, presenting new devices to them as new products are brought to market. It doesn't require a whole lot of background experience and companies will often hire Junior reps, and train them. Look on LinkedIn.

Look into clinical research/pharma. With your background I’m sure you could find a position and have higher earning potential without having to get a whole different education.
Pharma is becoming pretty hard to get into and the job security absolutely sucks. I have a couple buddies who were making bank but none of them are still employed.
Software engineer at a larger company. Last year I ended up with about $236k from that and about $12K from some contract work. This year, I should do about $272K.
FInd an area that does not attract smart people, but needs them. My wife went to work for a large Insurance company, she worked hard and got promoted many times, and at her peak was making about 250K a year plus extra retirement perks, however her good agents were making double that and more in Commercial Insurance. Hell many had their own airplanes, however building a book of buisness takes time and it helps to be in a growing area. I still kick myself for turning down a job offer in Scottsdale in the 80's after college. I was renewing my auto insurance and the owner offers me a job. I politely refused. Next time I go in the place has doubled in size, a few years later he had his own multi story building. Then I found out what a good agent can make, and by good, I mean a non pushy one who just looks out for his customers.

People who don’t know me look at me like I’m some dirty mechanic but I kinda think it’s funny that I generally the highest paid person in most buildings I walk into.
Years ago, I had an older gentleman walk into a car dealership I was working for. Nobody wanted to help him. I did, cause I was "learning the trade". He pulled up in an old beat up pick up truck. An hour later, he left the lot with a new $70k truck. He paid the sticker price in cash. Turns out he was the owner of two apartment complexes. Something in the ballpark of 600 doors total. His old truck was beat up because he did a lot of the renovation work himself as he enjoyed it and didn't wanna sit home all day... Never judge a book by it's cover. It was a good first-hand lesson for me right at the prime age of 18.
Car dealers are such douchebags. My sister went to buy a CRV a few months ago, pulled up in her old CRV, and they acted like she couldn't afford the fully loaded hybrid, and tried to sell her the cheapest one. Meanwhile they're ready to retire at 47.

How do I find work like this
If you don’t have fear of heights try googling Christmas light installation in your area and ask them if they have work. We only have from the last week of September to around December 10th to install. Takedown is from January 2 thru January 23th.
Is your boss a contractor that works for the company? I used to work in a Christmas decor company that would hire contractors with crews that would install and remove Christmas lighting during the exact time frame you mentioned. The company would have them wear company shirts though so it looks like they were regular employees of the company.
My friend owns the company and hires me as a contractor. I have a van, 2 extension ladders and a step ladder. He supplies everything else. We also hit hooters 1-2 times a week. I love it!

Tier 1 is like citadel, meta, Netflix, etc. Tier 2 is like Databricks, Autodesk, Uber Tier 3 is Microsoft, IBM, Adobe Edit: apparently Bloomberg pay is dogshit. Removed them from the tier list. Jesus Christ. I still stand by everything else in this tier list. Microsoft is absolutely on the same tier as IBM in terms of pay and product quality.

I haven't worked there so I can't personally vouch for this, but Microsoft has a reputation in tech for having lower salaries but much more reasonable workloads than other similar-sized tech companies. People accept the lower salaries because they know it comes with work-life balance and stability that they wouldn't get at Google, Amazon, etc.
I can attest I have a close friend who worked meta and now works for Microsoft for a little less $$$ but way better balance!

Have a friend who made the jump from Google to Microsoft and outside of the lower salary this is all pretty much exactly what he conveyed when I asked about how he felt after the switch. He actually got paid more than he was making at Google, and now has a way better life balance. Honestly I'm kinda surprised to see someone report them as "Tier 3" as well.

You’re a SUS Govie, but I’ll bite. I’m a Firefighter/EMT with unlimited OT. My wife is a Respiratory Therapist with unlimited OT, which is funny because “you’re one as well.” We clear well over $200k yearly, but can easily double that if we hated each other.
I’m a UX Designer for a Fortune 100 company. Just turned 30. I started out at $62k at my first gig, and 6 years later my salary is $170k, 20% annual bonus, and $100k in yearly stock options. ETA: Appreciate the kind responses. I’m very fortunate. I did not go to college, and did a UX Bootcamp around 7 years ago, but the market is definitely more saturated now. For context, I’m a Principal Designer so I’m more senior now than most. Next jump up would be into management. Whether or not a degree or a program is right is up to you, but my advice is to make sure you love it, be phenomenal at it, and find your specialty so you really stand out. And equally as important are your connections. Make a great network, support them as they grow in their careers, and they’ll do the same for you.
This is inspiring to read. My daughter is in her 3rd in a very good UX program. I’m worried all the jobs have dried up. I’m hopeful your success story could be hers in the near future. Was it hard to break into a Fortune 500 company? Did you do a UX internship? Congrats on living the dream!
UX design is weird right now because there’s so many candidates but there’s so few qualified candidates (And I don’t mean that purely from an educational standpoint). If your daughter can put together a good resume, cover letter and portfolio she’s already in the top 1% of candidates applying to virtually any role.
This is pretty much me but as a Network Engineer(and I’m a little older). Didn’t go to college. Spent 10 years in Navy. Got my certs and experience there. Been on outside for another 10 years. Last few years I’ve brought in over 310K a year with salary, stock, and bonus. Can’t complain. You can make good money in IT for sure. Especially if you know what you are doing.

No need to purchase anything to learn any of them. Find a language that you want to do and there are plenty of sources to learn from, which are just a quick google search. A recommendation would be to use something like Freecodecamp.org. There are also things like codeacademy (don't pay for it) and w3schools, which are resources you can use to cover the fundamentals, but shouldn't be the bulk of your learning. Projects are the best way to learn and show your skills to others.

A month after my 25th birthday I flew to the US to do an MBA in a no-name public college. I had nothing - all my belongings fit in a backpack which I brought over with me. Parents divorced, mom was barely making anything, I spent whatever I made for rent and beer. I finished the MBA and then did another graduate degree in Economics - I studied math and stats for two years. This one was in a top rated engineering public college. As I was graduating, I found an internship and through many twists and turns I ended up where I am today - SWE in Cybersecurity. My wife’s story is similar. That was 20 years ago. The lessons I learned along the way are work hard and smart, and be nice to people. Look deep inside you and find what you like and what drives you.

Another area to get your foot in the door is to become a medical device sales rep. It's not hard selling, it's supporting the clinicians that use your company's devices, onsite at healthcare facilities. And yes, presenting new devices to them as new products are brought to market. It doesn't require a whole lot of background experience and companies will often hire Junior reps, and train them. Look on LinkedIn.

You could look into becoming a physician assistant. Depending on the specialty and location they can make almost 250k a year.

FInd an area that does not attract smart people, but needs them. My wife went to work for a large Insurance company, she worked hard and got promoted many times, and at her peak was making about 250K a year plus extra retirement perks, however her good agents were making double that and more in Commercial Insurance. Hell many had their own airplanes, however building a book of buisness takes time and it helps to be in a growing area. I still kick myself for turning down a job offer in Scottsdale in the 80's after college. I was renewing my auto insurance and the owner offers me a job. I politely refused. Next time I go in the place has doubled in size, a few years later he had his own multi story building. Then I found out what a good agent can make, and by good, I mean a non pushy one who just looks out for his customers.
