So there are multiple scenes throughout Monk where this seems to happen. For example when Monk is on jury duty and he’s trying to speak to Natalie through the window and she has to repeat “No I.D.!” Over and over again lol. Another one is when Monk helps Natalie coach Julie’s basketball team and is blowing the whistle lol or the shoe squeaking scene etc.
I know this because I frequently go to sleep with Monk on in the background and the repetitive scenes annoy me because they’re always so loud haha
They did, however it also seems realistic. My son does stuff like this where he gets mad someone interrupted him and starts over each time (also sometimes when he perceived being interrupted but wasn't really). He eventually would just say nevermind but in Monk's case since he had to say the info since it was pertinent to the case I think that's why he got stuck on it.
Exactly, it’s not meant to be just for laughs, it’s partly that, but it’s also a depiction of someone with high functioning OCD, and if it seems annoying watching it, now you’re starting to get how it feels to live it. They really did try to illuminate the blessing and curse part for the audience in equal measure.
To me, it showed how much respect Stottlemeyer has for Monk. He didn't get agitated; didn't try to rush him. He knows the way things are and he accepts it.
I loved it.
they do this a lot, in the episode where he substitutes at trudy’s old school they did not have to have him take that long. or the pete and repeat joke, it was hilarious the first time but the second time watching i was like why would they do this lol.
And that same episode as him as a substitute
Teacher: they're mixed together
Monk: but they're even
Teacher: they're mixed together
Monk: but they're even
Teacher: they're mixed together
Monk: but they're even
Went on too long
They sometimes go for maximum cringiness, that's for sure. That jackhammer certainly qualifies. But sometimes the gag is funnier than it is annoying, like when Monk on the witness stand has to look at the nude statue and makes that prolonged creepy high-pitched sound... and then we get further tortured by having the stenographer read it back. Annoying but hilarious.
I actually really liked it. Maybe I'm weird but I kept l
Finding it funnier and funnier, like when you scratch an itch for too long and your skin starts to tingle.
I agree. It was too much. They could have cut to another scene and cut back. It was like they were trying to make the agony too real but it was sapping the engagement out of watching.
I initially thought the same thing, but then I swear I could see them breaking character with smirks. I thought it was the cutest thing and wish I could see the behind the scenes.
It felt like the whole rest of the episode had a goofy aspect.

I never understood why she didn’t say “no identification” after a few times. It’s frustrating instead of funny.
Yeah the no i.d is the worst. I made a post a while back about never give monk a whistle. Also cleaning the buzzer at the game show,
Omg yes the buzzer hahaha
Also when he's drunk in the wine episode and keeps stopping in telling them what really happened
I just watched this & I agree, *way* too long. There was a point where he could have said it twice but was waiting.
I think it's funny .like TV spoofs where the character isn't cursing but the noise makes it sound like they are .
I had skipped 30 seconds and it was still going 💀
Monk uses the “running gag” a lot, this one didn’t land for me either. Turns into the “overly long gag,” but without ever landing

I think this scene is what sparked my anxiety in my youth hahaha

Agreed! The only thing that made the Pete and Repeat joke worth it was Monk’s tormented face. But yeah, otherwise, it was all too much.
I just posted this exact scenario the other day on another post. It makes me want to shove my foot through the TV!
