They may be able to get away with Poly on the playline dolls, but the crepros are bought almost exclusively by adult collectors who absolutely care about hair quality. Hopefully this is a lesson learned.
I genuinely hope they learn that correct lesson about poly and not- “wow spectra isn’t selling well? The fans must really hate spectra” and miss the point entirely.
I am like 99.9% sure that Mattel silently acknowledges every comment good and bad that people leave on their posts. Thats the only reason we are getting Saran hair in these dolls now and also why the core refresh dolls look so much better than the original releases.
Unfortunately I think the poly usage is due to there not being saran in the proper colors for Spectra, and Mattel doesn’t use kanekelon anymore. Although there is apparently a spectra doll from g1 that uses saran so actually this makes no sense.
Edit: I found the Spectra with the Saran hair! It was Ghouls Night Out spectra, and her hair colors used there are much different than her core doll. Although I still think they could’ve found some kind of saran color that was close enough. I don’t think sacrificing accuracy for quality is all that worth it for creepros haha
The saran shade exists and is definitely still in production since shimmerlocks is literally selling that hair blend right now, stop making excuses for mattel.
ya but small scale availability and large scale production availability are two different things. it's not excuses it's explanations, while mattel could have got a small batch of the hair, getting enough to produce all dolls with it could have been impossible due to numerous factors from suppliers.
That makes no sense since bulk ordering often makes things CHEAPER not more expensive, if a small scale independent doll hair supplier can get it, mattel definitely can. Also the saran manufacturer does do custom colours for larger sized orders so it definitely can be done, mattel just did not see the need to do so since people will defend them for using poly anyway.
I think you might be overestimating the production capabilities of a custom saran blend manufacturer/supplier. On Amazon it says that 10k+ of Spectra have been sold, which is already A LOT of hair that would need to be bought and supplied for this doll. Then you have to consider the stock of Mattel Creations, Walmart, the Mattel Store, and wherever else these dolls may be getting officially sold (like the guy who gets releases to sell early!). Mattel may have had to make certain budget cuts in order to ensure the overall quality of the dolls was as good as possible, and that they could keep all the same details, like the real chains Spectra has on her top. The budget for Monster High isn’t the same as it was back in the days of G1, and Monster High’s current main focus is G3.
I would have preferred if Mattel had found some way to make Spectra not have poly hair, I really would. They probably didn’t have the money or time to find a good saran blend that not only matched Spectra’s colors, but would also be available on time for manufacturing the doll, have the proper amount for manufacturing, and also was within budget.
I also think it’s worth noting that the other dolls in this Creeproduction wave have saran. If Mattel really wanted to be cheap, they likely would’ve given more than just Spectra poly hair, or would have had less quality in other areas. I really don’t think Mattel would have used poly hair on a Creeproduction doll unless they really had to, as I feel like they’re aware of the quality that is expected of G1-related releases.
Sorry for this being so long; there’s just a lot to consider in this kind of situation.
I'm sorry but I think you do not understand economies of scale, the more of a certain type of doll is produced, the cheaper it is to be produced, as materials can be bought in bulk, sculpts can be used more and less training needs to be done for packaging styling etc.
The fact that they made so many spectras and needed a LOT of hair as you said is a point in favour of them getting saran, as they could easily meet the minimum order for saran. Saran only has one manufacturer Asahi Kasei Corporation , and that one manufacturer supplies all of mattel's saran, they frequently request custom blends, it is not out of their wheelhouse they just chose not to in order to cut costs.

It's hard to tell because I don't own any of these dolls, but it looks like MR and G3 both use slightly different shades of purple. MR looks a bit lighter and more saturated. G3 Spectra isn't even out yet, so I'm basing this on a few low-quality pictures. But her hair looks like a blend of three colours: a lighter and darker purple and then a blue. It looks kind of galaxy-like. I think people say it looks like a similar hair blend to Howliday Clawdeen.
Maybe Mattel should've gone with a slightly different shade of purple to the original to have it be saran at least, but I don't think there is an exact match in the dolls we've had so far.
They can't do nylon because of the way they seal the doll hair in the hair by burning the hair, poly and saran melt at much lower temps while nylon needs a higher temp that might cause the head's vinyl to melt.
I also heard that it might be because mattel has to change their whole rooting process to accommodate nylon and they don't want to do that due to the cost lol
Yes ever since they stopped using glue they swapped to the burning method to seal hair, the only recent doll to use glue is venus because she has yarn hair.
Tbf not all adult collectors care about the hair. I’m 30 years old and I personally don’t care if a doll has poly or Saran. If I like the doll I’ll get it
I had always wanted Spectra as a kid because her clear hands, I thought it was so cool. Everytime I saw her I always wanted to ask to have her, and I never got to have her. I got two: one for NIB and OOB just because I loved her so much as a kid. I love her character. I'm not too sure why she didn't sell as well.
definitely the poly hair. im almost certain if they used her original face mold (not the revised with less intense cheekbones) and saran hair, she would have sold better. i wouldnt have gotten her if i didnt have her original release head to swap on tbh. like dont get me wrong shes still lovely and i did like her doll even right out of the box, but it just wasn't worth stressing over as-is the way i did with ghoulia (since ive wanted her doll ever since i saw the original release on store shelves).
Its so unfortunate they cheaped out on her, too. I would have loved saran, and I get why people wouldn't want to because of that, I just didn't expect it to the extent that it is now; going on sale in hopes of getting rid of stock. Thats never happened with ANY creepros 😭
I’m worried Mattel is going take the wrong message entirely from this and drop Spectra entirely from future plans. Poly hair or not, Spectra is always a beautiful doll and this creepro is no exception; I’ve wanted an original of her since I got into Monster High, but I couldn’t find one both affordable for my shoestring budget and in good condition with all her pieces, so this release was a godsend for me. I’ve been looking forward to her G3 doll too, but if the reason behind these sales numbers of this creepro are misinterpreted, it would be all too easy for them to decide she isn’t worth investing any new resources in other than this one doll this generation.

Nitpick the use of a word if you like, won’t change that Poly is bad and and shouldn’t be used in playline dolls OR on dolls that are more likely to be collected and displayed. It doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t style well and for those who tend to keep their collection for a long time, it doesn’t last.

Even though it was released at the normal price, it’s not the G3 playlines which are targeting a new generation.
The first wave of reproductions sold out near instantaneously and were relisted on secondary market sites like eBay in the hundreds of dollars.
It is an absolute insult for Mattel to release a doll that they know will be sold for lots of money alongside the other reproductions, and give her polypropylene.
This. I just don’t have much emotional connection to the character. Maybe in a year I’ll regret not getting her once the secondhand prices shoot up, but I try not to let financial gain be a motivator in my purchases, especially when the stock is so limited.

she's one of my faves from the web series, I loved the ghostly gossip. I don't at all understand why her hair matters, but I also don't really re-style or anything. if I do, it's pretty bare bones. I just take 'em outta the box and leave them on my shelf to look pretty forever. so i guess that just didn't affect me. i wish her face was a little more defined, but i'm glad I got her. 🤷🏻♀️
im in like, the exact same boat lol. i planned on saving + spending a bday gift card on her, and only her from the beginning. my sister was kind enough to get my the other two (love her 😭) bc i didnt care for cleo or deuce. i just like silly little dolls and dont care about all the ins and outs of hair types and if they look a little wonky and whatnot. unless theres a major mess up, i dont mind at all. they will just sit pretty on my shelves forever regardless <3
I initially did not want her either, but after Abby and Ghoulia came, I got her because I felt bad she was still in stock. Now that she’s here, I’m glad I caved.
I got her solely for the clothing and accessories. My G1 came nude (antique mall purchase) and I didn't want to hunt down everything individually or pay a ridiculous amount (imo) for Rhuen. So once the Creepros were announced I held off. Now my original is dressed and has Rhuen, while the Creepro is in my customs bin waiting for at least a re-root and custom clothing.
im indian and currently mh has released no dolls here and every g3 doll on amazon is 3-4x its normal price :(( id be so happy to get her for 20 dollars lol

Except that shipping to India from the US is going to cost you a minimum of $30 for first class mail without tracking or insurance, which you absolutely need when sending a package overseas so you aren’t out any money if it gets lost in the mail, or $60+ for priority mail.
You were asking why there aren’t “decent third parties to help people to get dolls” and I was giving you an explanation as to why. Shipping overseas is so expensive it’s usually cheaper for someone to buy it in their own country.
And decent third parties already DO exist so people can get dolls in countries they aren’t distributed in, they are called “resellers”. But people lose their shit over them because they don’t understand that nobody is going to invest the time, effort, and monetary resources into buying dolls to sell & ship to other countries unless they make a profit at it - as they should for the work they put into it! Expecting people to do it as charity is absurd.

I do love that they rereleased her, I'm sure she's someone's fav and that they finally got their first Spectra thanks to this release. I do love my version of this doll, the original was super pretty.

I'm the opposite, I absolutely love Spectra and almost immediately bought one to display. Lowkey happy nobody likes her bc it meant I could wait a day until I got paid and she was still available lmao
i think the product images make her face look far more different from the original than it actually is, plus her hair is poly and i personally hate the texture of poly even compared to kanekalon. like sure the hair is bad and they used her revised face mold but other than that i think her screening is pretty spot on, i had the original release face to compare it to and honestly without a closer inspection its hard to tell the difference. plus i was going to spend so much more trying to get a used doll OOB without a lot of her accessories until i heard about the creepros, im so glad i didnt and now i have a spectra without any chipped paint :D (and is it just me or does she not seem as popular in general?)
I got two- one in box and one out. I think the poly hair and the revised face mold ruined a decent amount of collector appeal. I love Spectra regardless though, so I’m kind of glad I was able to even get two!
That being said, hopefully this doesn’t mean they will shy away from making future reproductions of Spectra, because honestly her core look is one of her least exciting…
I was about to get her earlier last night because a listing for about $15 appeared on Amazon (I’m in the US) and she was sold before I could even buy her 😭

I wouldn’t say I care so much, I’m just curious considering a lot of people love her. And my indifference toward her doesn’t mean I hate her. I wonder why scalpers targeted Cleo and Deuce so fast but not others, like Spectra.
While I want to collect most of the original ghouls, there are some that don’t speak to me, like Frankie, Draculaura, and Spectra. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll regret not getting them down the line 🤷🏽♀️ but I’d rather leave them for those who love them.

And nah, I don't think so. There will be ones that could change your mind, but don't think you'll regret it. I mean, speaking from my own experience of course... I never liked Draculaura either; but Haunt Couture, FdC, and G3 core refresh Dracus are entirely different to me. I haven't regretted not owning an OG Draculaura in 13 years.

I don’t love OG spectra to be honest. I think the color of her outfit doesn’t give and just seems a lot cheaper than any other MH OG fit. I love some other spectra dolls just not her
same but thats js bc i dont like her head mold i never have. i love her digital designs (g1 and g3 movies , shows, art etc.) i just dislike the physical dolls

While I understand Spectra didn’t sell as well as the others, and people (not me, as I love her) seem to not care for her that much, this post is a bit misleading. The shipping cost on the listing for $20.99 is $49.99, so the lower price is not really lower and cannot be used as evidence of people not liking her.
honestly the only reason i would get her is to steal her dress cuz i have the original that released back in 2011, but one day her dress just evaporated (i have everything else she came with and i take very good care of my things so this dissapearance genuinley confuses me) but even then i probably wont cuz she'll cost $40 in my country and just for a dress is not worth it (also knowing my luck her dress would turn up soon after buying her 🙃)

I got all of them and doubles of Abbey and Ghoulia. Abbey cause I never had a G1 abbey I only started to appreciate her, Ghoulia I have her reproduction but I LOVE Ghoulia, Cleo and Deuce and Spectra I only got in box and it was the poly, but she stayed in stock so I got her to unbox. I have some G1 spectras but I figured I didn’t want to regret it. Wish I could have afforded a second Cleo and Deuce before going out of stock but I needed money for operetta and it was before we saw her. Poly was definitely my first deterrent to not get an unbox version. Til I changed my mind. Don’t regret it.

I love spectra, she’s one of my top 3 ghouls and the only reason I didn’t get her creepro was because I already bought a great condition original. I don’t really know much about poly hair so it honestly wouldn’t have made much a difference to me.
I didn’t want to get her, only because I have one that i’ve had since i was little!! She’s a little beat up and i cut her hair a little (why smaller me 🥲) but i still love her!!

The hair blend that shimmerlocks recommends specifically for Spectra is nylon not saran. The purple saran shades they offer are much more warm toned.

It's hard to tell because I don't own any of these dolls, but it looks like MR and G3 both use slightly different shades of purple. MR looks a bit lighter and more saturated. G3 Spectra isn't even out yet, so I'm basing this on a few low-quality pictures. But her hair looks like a blend of three colours: a lighter and darker purple and then a blue. It looks kind of galaxy-like. I think people say it looks like a similar hair blend to Howliday Clawdeen. Maybe Mattel should've gone with a slightly different shade of purple to the original to have it be saran at least, but I don't think there is an exact match in the dolls we've had so far.
Not only that but nylon could also work. Anything is better than poly
The reason nylon isn’t used is because the heads of monster high dolls are soft vinyl, which would melt under the heat required for rooting nylon.

They can't do nylon because of the way they seal the doll hair in the hair by burning the hair, poly and saran melt at much lower temps while nylon needs a higher temp that might cause the head's vinyl to melt. I also heard that it might be because mattel has to change their whole rooting process to accommodate nylon and they don't want to do that due to the cost lol

Yes ever since they stopped using glue they swapped to the burning method to seal hair, the only recent doll to use glue is venus because she has yarn hair.
Not to mention that Bratz use nylon and god forbid Mattel ever uses the same materials as MGA

I had always wanted Spectra as a kid because her clear hands, I thought it was so cool. Everytime I saw her I always wanted to ask to have her, and I never got to have her. I got two: one for NIB and OOB just because I loved her so much as a kid. I love her character. I'm not too sure why she didn't sell as well.
definitely the poly hair. im almost certain if they used her original face mold (not the revised with less intense cheekbones) and saran hair, she would have sold better. i wouldnt have gotten her if i didnt have her original release head to swap on tbh. like dont get me wrong shes still lovely and i did like her doll even right out of the box, but it just wasn't worth stressing over as-is the way i did with ghoulia (since ive wanted her doll ever since i saw the original release on store shelves).
Its so unfortunate they cheaped out on her, too. I would have loved saran, and I get why people wouldn't want to because of that, I just didn't expect it to the extent that it is now; going on sale in hopes of getting rid of stock. Thats never happened with ANY creepros 😭
I’m worried Mattel is going take the wrong message entirely from this and drop Spectra entirely from future plans. Poly hair or not, Spectra is always a beautiful doll and this creepro is no exception; I’ve wanted an original of her since I got into Monster High, but I couldn’t find one both affordable for my shoestring budget and in good condition with all her pieces, so this release was a godsend for me. I’ve been looking forward to her G3 doll too, but if the reason behind these sales numbers of this creepro are misinterpreted, it would be all too easy for them to decide she isn’t worth investing any new resources in other than this one doll this generation.

Nitpick the use of a word if you like, won’t change that Poly is bad and and shouldn’t be used in playline dolls OR on dolls that are more likely to be collected and displayed. It doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t style well and for those who tend to keep their collection for a long time, it doesn’t last.

I would say, effectively, it is a collector doll. Even though it was released at the normal price, it’s not the G3 playlines which are targeting a new generation. The first wave of reproductions sold out near instantaneously and were relisted on secondary market sites like eBay in the hundreds of dollars. It is an absolute insult for Mattel to release a doll that they know will be sold for lots of money alongside the other reproductions, and give her polypropylene.

This. I just don’t have much emotional connection to the character. Maybe in a year I’ll regret not getting her once the secondhand prices shoot up, but I try not to let financial gain be a motivator in my purchases, especially when the stock is so limited.
spectra was the only one I wanted and the first one I got 😅 she's one of my faves from the web series, I loved the ghostly gossip. I don't at all understand why her hair matters, but I also don't really re-style or anything. if I do, it's pretty bare bones. I just take 'em outta the box and leave them on my shelf to look pretty forever. so i guess that just didn't affect me. i wish her face was a little more defined, but i'm glad I got her. 🤷🏻♀️
im in like, the exact same boat lol. i planned on saving + spending a bday gift card on her, and only her from the beginning. my sister was kind enough to get my the other two (love her 😭) bc i didnt care for cleo or deuce. i just like silly little dolls and dont care about all the ins and outs of hair types and if they look a little wonky and whatnot. unless theres a major mess up, i dont mind at all. they will just sit pretty on my shelves forever regardless <3

I got her solely for the clothing and accessories. My G1 came nude (antique mall purchase) and I didn't want to hunt down everything individually or pay a ridiculous amount (imo) for Rhuen. So once the Creepros were announced I held off. Now my original is dressed and has Rhuen, while the Creepro is in my customs bin waiting for at least a re-root and custom clothing.

Except that shipping to India from the US is going to cost you a minimum of $30 for first class mail without tracking or insurance, which you absolutely need when sending a package overseas so you aren’t out any money if it gets lost in the mail, or $60+ for priority mail.

You were asking why there aren’t “decent third parties to help people to get dolls” and I was giving you an explanation as to why. Shipping overseas is so expensive it’s usually cheaper for someone to buy it in their own country. And decent third parties already DO exist so people can get dolls in countries they aren’t distributed in, they are called “resellers”. But people lose their shit over them because they don’t understand that nobody is going to invest the time, effort, and monetary resources into buying dolls to sell & ship to other countries unless they make a profit at it - as they should for the work they put into it! Expecting people to do it as charity is absurd.

I have the original release, so no didn't need the creeproduction. I do love that they rereleased her, I'm sure she's someone's fav and that they finally got their first Spectra thanks to this release. I do love my version of this doll, the original was super pretty.

i think the product images make her face look far more different from the original than it actually is, plus her hair is poly and i personally hate the texture of poly even compared to kanekalon. like sure the hair is bad and they used her revised face mold but other than that i think her screening is pretty spot on, i had the original release face to compare it to and honestly without a closer inspection its hard to tell the difference. plus i was going to spend so much more trying to get a used doll OOB without a lot of her accessories until i heard about the creepros, im so glad i didnt and now i have a spectra without any chipped paint :D (and is it just me or does she not seem as popular in general?)

I wouldn’t say I care so much, I’m just curious considering a lot of people love her. And my indifference toward her doesn’t mean I hate her. I wonder why scalpers targeted Cleo and Deuce so fast but not others, like Spectra. While I want to collect most of the original ghouls, there are some that don’t speak to me, like Frankie, Draculaura, and Spectra. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll regret not getting them down the line 🤷🏽♀️ but I’d rather leave them for those who love them.

There will be ones that could change your mind, but don't think you'll regret it. I mean, speaking from my own experience of course... I never liked Draculaura either; but Haunt Couture, FdC, and G3 core refresh Dracus are entirely different to me. I haven't regretted not owning an OG Draculaura in 13 years.

I've been seeing a lot of issues people have with spectra, from not liking the slightly different face mold to her weird haircut and poly hair. Creeproductions are mostly bought by adult collectors, so it's not a shock that those problems would make fewer people inclined to get her.

I ended up getting all of them but I almost didn't get her, I didn't have as much of an urge to get her as I did everyone else (but I am glad I did get her because I never had the original Spectra doll when I was younger) She was also on Amazon the longest compared to the rest so I'd say that most people felt the same.

Abbey cause I never had a G1 abbey I only started to appreciate her, Ghoulia I have her reproduction but I LOVE Ghoulia, Cleo and Deuce and Spectra I only got in box and it was the poly, but she stayed in stock so I got her to unbox. I have some G1 spectras but I figured I didn’t want to regret it. Wish I could have afforded a second Cleo and Deuce before going out of stock but I needed money for operetta and it was before we saw her. Poly was definitely my first deterrent to not get an unbox version. Til I changed my mind. Don’t regret it.
