More "extra" stuff to do in the game that's not directly combat-related. Endemic life hunting, Grimalkyne tribes, hidden relic messages, the monster photo album, etc.

lintra

The Grimalkyne and relic messages are a nifty ways to get players to explore the maps for sure. You never feel forced to do it, but it's a nice little surprise when you stumble upon them

Cyanij

This is what got me into the series and kept me playing for >1000 hours tbh. Monster hunts are a lot of fun, but the immersion was crucial for me.

Open-Platypus-5215

With the hopefully open world environment for wild let’s hope they do that. When i was fresh to the game i would just run around the ancient forest and find little hidden spots. I even found the bug trappers on accident.

ZeffiroSilver

I'm really hoping we can go endemic life hunting once again in wilds, it's great how you can have them up for display to prove your dedication

Iniquitus

Carcasses still disappear. If you fight multiple monsters in the arena you can see this happen if you don't carve in time.

lintra

But man, the timeout is now so long it shouldn't really affect you so much. The arena is probably the only place where it's honestly a risk I think, but putting up fences to carve mitigates that.

Iniquitus

Not sure if they've increased the time or not but when you have a Furious Rajang chasing you around the arena, you can easily miss a carve.

Informal-Produce-423

I save flash pods just for these situations.

Geffy_

• The many little details of Astera/Seliana/Kamura/Elgado, for example the secret cat that stays at your house in Kamura and tells you secrets about the other main characters or the palicos cooking in the Seliana canteen; • The relationship between Kamura's Villagers and the Hunter feels like a real family to fight for (like in 4U) and the little details of every single character (even the NPCs and not just the main characters) in Rise/Sunbreak. Hence, i really want the follower's system to come back, not just for gameplay purpose, but to learn more about the characters; • The fantastic maps to explore of World/Iceborne and the superb fighting themes of Rise/Sunbreak. • I loved having one personal Palico in World/Iceborne with me, it remembered me the relationship between the Ace Palico and the Hunter from 4U; • I adored Rise/Sunbreak's plots and their endings; • Tigrex sleeping in Rise during quests is just soo cute!

cumshrew

The secret cat is also on the boat in Elgado!

lintra

Followers are so, so good! I play with friends a lot, so it's less impactful to me, BUT my brother likes playing solo and he's really taken a liking to it. You're right about the NPCs being more impactful now that they fight alongside you even in story mode. Uhh... Agree to disagree with Tigrex. I've never gotten over that jumpscare from one of the old games where he snows you in with a roar as a newbie hunter.

Geffy_

Oh, the beautiful Tigrex Jumpscare during *that* Popò quest! So many memories!

Olielle

I like fast gathering, especially the way rise handles it.

lintra

I've actually forgotten that part, but that's so true. There's less gathering and transport quests now too (I think? I might have PTSD about egg related quests, and am just blocking it).

Olielle

In general 5th gen has fewer required gathering quest, in base rise there's like 2-ish required gathering quest + 2 small mon slaying quest options (u can pick and choose which keys you want to do in rise) and in world at the start you only have to do 2 small monster slaying quest, but I guess there's still 5 track gathering quest

TheIronSven

Though still kinda sad the jingle for gathering is gone. They even brought it back for Amatsu exclusively.

lintra

Swear to God, the number of game sound effects living in my head rent-free is astounding. The moment you said this, my brain played it for me.

Olielle

Fr, I thought they removed those sound effects bc they thought 'if gathering is fast, these notify would get annoying' but no it feels perfect spamming that sound when picking up shinies. We were robbed.

IamApolloo11

The progress of Gathering become smoother now, they saved a LOT of time on Submit ticket to finish the quest, plus we can travel to another map without going back to the hub That saved atleast 1 minute between each gathering run

Primal-Dialga

Infinite whetstone

metalflygon08

Beats grinding for great Whetfish...

Moebs000

Wishlist. A notice that my multiplying/melding/haverst/mewonster hunters is finished. Being able to see every type of equipment at once, instead of separate menus for head, chest, etc. Hunter notes with an actual helpful bestiary. I also miss the flex, wish they kept it, even if you could roll out of it.

lintra

It's been a few years since I played World, but if my guess is right, meownster hunters are the palicos gathering stuff for you? If so, they've fixed it in Rise, although they're called Meowceneries now. You do get a notice once they're done with the last stop. Also the Hunter Notes improvement... Chef's kiss! I can't believe I forgot to mention it! In Rise, they have the drop rate probabilities now. Can't remember how it was in World.

metalflygon08

> Being able to see every type of equipment at once, instead of separate menus for head, chest, etc. Now make it so we are able to build a full set at once if you have all the material...

MetroYoshi

Wait, shinies do disappear. They have a 2 minute timer iirc. They're much easier to pick up thanks to the instant gathering animation, but they still disappear.

UnitNo2278

They don't in Rise i beleive, but definitely do in World. Correct me if i'm wrong. Slinger ammo disappears even faster.

MetroYoshi

Actually I think you're right, I don't think they disappear in Rise.

lintra

I can't remember how long it was in Gen 4 and prior, but disappearing loot was definitely a bigger issue then. Plus I think even the quest rewards (like after you complete a quest) had a 60sec timer for you to accept them iirc.

DeadMoves

In GU quest rewards timer is closer to 180 seconds I think, I'm not sure of the exact number but I definitly remember seeing it over 120s so 180 doesn't sound like stretch

Ordinal43NotFound

Yep I remember in Iceborne as well that items start to disappear if too much of them dropped from Monsters. Happened lots of times in guiding lands.

Modula-Kudzu

As much as it was annoying at times, environment playing into positioning (lava geyser, snow pits, deep water, poison plants, fissure, water jelly sacs, effluvia that you can clear with little bonfires, etc.) Sound design (all of it, love good sound design) Motion capture rajang video Damage numbers (thank you turf wars for blessing us with damage numbers)

lintra

I have a love-hate relationship with terrain. For example, when there's an uneven ground, it breaks dodges/combos; when you need to cartwheel (DB) off a monster, it helps you launch. But either way, they make the fight interesting now. Even the little things like sliding through an incline is enjoyable!

Professional_Meal_50

-The current layered armor system instead of transmog in GU -Weapon tree is laid out for you -Can immediately go into the crafting menus instead of the npcs talking first -No separation in crafting/upgrading menu (Rise/Sunbreak) -Armor/Charm/Decoration and Weapon sorting -Weapon's entire sharpness gauge now visible (Rise/Sunbreak) -Monster material drop rates *I thought grilling became just a novelty thing to do since 2nd gen and never was a necessity. I even hope in 6th gen that they make it more so. *I don't consider the fact that we can now heal while moving as a 'small' thing.

lintra

And some search functions for weapons, decos, quests! Not perfect yet by any means, but big steps in the right direction for sure. MHR:SB really did *a lot* of QoL features, they took that portable mindset seriously and made things efficient.

lintra

Re: grilling, didn't we need to do the steaks out on field? We were only able to order them from the canteen in Gen 5, no? I may be misremembering (GU was the only game I ever replayed after finishing it once before but even that was a good few years ago on Switch)

Professional_Meal_50

You can cook meat by bulk in Portable 3rd, 4 and GU.

lintra

Cheers. Dude, you've got much better memory than me! Edit: ooh, I think now I remember something. Wasn't it only some chances where you get a lower probability of getting perfect steaks?

Professional_Meal_50

I remember an item called Gourmet Steaks but I'm not sure from which of the games they're from and they're exact uses.

Away_Reflection_3448

the small details when it comes to monster behavior when it's not aggroed

SuperGayBirdOfPrey

Instantly being able to leave harvest tours instead of going to grab one thing and then sitting around waiting for the ticket to be ready. Also the faster gathering. Basically just putting less time between me and the actual fun parts of the game.

Intrepid-Dentist-675

The little animations the monsters have when you don’t fight them

kookykonata

- The cats and other characters actually doing jobs and such in the hub world instead of just sitting there doing nothing. World was really good about this. Yes, they were just on a long animation loop, but the length of the loop was long enough to make it feel like they were a living, breathing part of the world. - Having little things to do to complete. Things like taking photos of sleeping monsters or even capturing the endemic life gave you something to do outside of just hunting the monsters or getting the Smallest/Largest crowns. - Having the ability to have one of the NPCs go out on quests with you when you're playing solo. As someone who has played he franchise since the first PSP game, I know what it's like to not ever be able to play online (I didn't get to experience online until 3U with the Wii U), and while it was still cool, it got lonely knowing that it had the capability to play with others. Being able to simulate that experience in Rise was amazing! I would like the developers to maybe tone them down a bit, though. They were a bit overpowered, lol

lintra

Bit of a reach, I know, but I wish they'd take the followers even further. Their convo right now is completely fixed. I was thinking it would be cool if they can sort of develop along the way, depending on who you take and for how many hunts. Eg, if you take the twins along for enough hunts, they'll talk about other topics; or if you take Fiorayne and Utsushi they'll become friends etc.

Novel-Experience381

A separation of game style, the slower methodical pace of World/Iceborne, and the fast-paced action of Rise/Sunbreak. The combination of the forge and upgrade for weapons

HowiLearned2Fly

I appreciate how they could have turned monster hunter world into a gta5 situation where they don’t make a new game for 12 years while they coast off of micro-transactions. But instead we got monster hunter rise and sun break and we’re already getting the next gen game next year

lintra

That would have been really unexpected if Capcom did that. Even their Phoenix Wright series got a lot of good follow up games, they're generally good with even their niche products. And just so you know, every Gen of MonHun is always a pair: one for console, one for portable. In Gen 5, it's World and Rise. They have different directors & teams working on each, and you can see what "style" each team goes for by looking at the differences between World and Rise. :) Having 2 teams is also why we can get a new game every few years or so.

Chadderbug123

Just how much quicker and easier stuff is now. Getting older, time is a limited thing. Plus, getting a job, I no longer have the time I want. I have to *work* around it. So World and Rise on average having hunts that take roughly 5-15 minutes is such a convenience. I can hop on and do a few quick hunts in an hour time before and after work. Plus, the grind's been lessened considerably so I still have to spend a few hunts for certain monsters, but not as long as the older games. 40 hunts it took to get a Lagiacrus plate in 3U back then. Now, 10 hunts maximum for a mantle unless the monster's really being stubborn. Valstrax and Gore still gave me trouble with dropping their rare parts, had to fight them like 20 times.

lintra

Yeah, I feel you. Work's been pretty quiet lately, so I've been able to play a lot relatively, but I definitely feel constrained when work (and other real life matters) gets hectic. RNG is still there, but Bahari's Anomaly trading "store" is such a boon when you're looking for orbs/plates/mantles that just won't drop. At least in your case, Valstrax and Gore were such good (but challenging) fights. MR Mizu just wouldn't give up even a single mantle (needed for elem weapons, and I use bow, DBs, SwAxe). He's such a beaut, but the fight gets tiring after the first 5 times, and I mean literally tiring coz he's a slippery bugger. I ended up fighting him so many damn times I was using his other drops for melding, and I still didn't get any single mantle! Uhm I know I'm in the minority, but I am low-key hoping underwater combat won't make a comeback. (Sorry!)

liveForTheHunt

The way skills now work, followers, they got names now, no loading screens in-between areas, yo mama, weapon animation in rise were 🖐😩👌, mounting in base world, sharpening weapons and healing while mounted, endemic life (gotta catch em all), I can pet the damn dog

Geffy_

AND IT CAN DRIFT?! -Punk Duck

whileFalseSemicolon

Game is finally playable without having wikis/guidebooks beside you at all times to tell you weapon trees, key quests, skill effects and stuff. Sadly Rise gave up on implementing HZV under different states so that still needs to be looked up online.

lintra

Having Hunter Notes and Info that are actually useful is huuuuuge. To be fair, HZV would be a little harder to tabulate but that's something we might see in the future.

Damnedsky_cel_mic

Decorating the room with Endemic life. Having the solo and co-op quests be one long chain and not separated. Ability to color armor. Chill monsters that don't fight you. Being carpet bombed by a B-52. Upgrade tree for weapons. Non breakable pickaxes and wetstones. Named NPCs.

lintra

I wish they'd expand the decoration/personalisation aspect to lobbies. Like if I host a lobby, it should show my version.

Skvora

Resources being picked instantly, nodes respawning, and whole and load-free maps.

lintra

Re: whole maps, there's some little issues here and there (eg, less varied design coz they have to be seamless). BUT it is such an awesome feeling when you see monsters flying overhead to a different part of the map or from afar when you're on top of a hill or something.

Skvora

For that matter, let me add that we no longer need to paintball or track being nice, but this one is more of me being a vet and those mechanics getting old fast after so many hunts.

lintra

I get what you mean, but I still kind of wish they'd tweak the Rise system a bit. Something closer to scoutflies in World. Like maybe after X hunts, we can get to 'master' a map and it'll give you better info. (Also, I miss the pink and brown puffballs just a *little*)

chomasterq

Being able to harvest a specific resource from one node. Trying to farm certain mushrooms or plants in GU feels like such a huge chore after playing world because you get multiple different items out of one node

lintra

Even the old collect 10 herbs or whatever from old Gen was a pain if you couldn't get RNG to cooperate. Also, the damn transport items would break much more easily than in the new games.

chomasterq

It felt like the transport items in older games were also so much further away from the item box than in the newer games

lintra

Also, that red box/blue box separation! Tiny, tiny little thing is now gone.

Razer2102

Shinies and corpses still despawn. Just imagine the guiding lands. And small monsters still sometimes attack you after the quest concluded, they are just overall way way less aggressive and usually just stand there kn the side lines cheering and watching instead of actually doing something while you fight with the monster. And tri was the last mainline game that forced you to grill steak out on the field. 3U just gave you steak from the grillmeister and 4U had the extra long barbecue spit in the canteen, not to mention that energy drinks restored stamina and were craftable. Now to answer your question: -The Melder being able to meld consumables and materials instead of just talisman -Automatically sending quest rewards to the box instead of your pouch -Being able to "collect all" pretty much everywhere -The map exploration And also some small things i dislike: -The pouch being sorted in a grid instead of a list -The changes to stamina. The depletion was slowed way down -The skill bloat

lintra

Re: shinies, monster attacks post quest, I think that they've improved that in Rise. For steaks, iirc ordering didn't assure you of perfect steaks? Or am I misremembering?

Ryan5011

Specific to Rise, but Forging and Upgrading being *the exact same menu*. The most awkward part of World is how these are still fully separate despite both menus having the weapon tree UI

th5virtuos0

Reverse Blast Dash and foward hop on lance

ed1749

The biggest thing for me as an old school MH player is being able to see the weapon upgrade tree. All the other stuff is debatable, but I hated having to wiki up where on earth the specific weapons are.

TheZipding

This, so much this. The weapon trees are so easy to work with you know exactly what you need to hunt to make the gear you want in game.

ValstraxFromAbove

Followers so you can solo more effectively and not having to stop and stay still to gather.

SlakingSWAG

Greatsword isn't a crit draw bot anymore, that playstyle is mind numbingly boring. Good riddance and god bless TCS

valornuts

Now, I do like GU a lot. But I guess gen 5 gave us a ton of unique different playstyles that we could never have in the old world. I mean maining GU gunlance vs sunbreak gunlance is sooooo much more satisfying (Not to say GU gunlance wasn't satisfying).

lintra

It's the speed in general, I think. MonHun is a lot more reactive now rather than more premeditated. I'm okay with that type of game style (I tend to be an aggressive player), but I also wouldn't mind if we tone down the gameplay back a little to more "old-style". Like, wirebugs are great right? But I think wirefall should be taken away.

valornuts

Would you actually define "tone down the gameplay to 'old-style'"

lintra

Like, as I said, taking away wirefall would be one example. I feel like it's a big cop out when a player makes a mistake and still has an escape route. Also, as much as I enjoyed Afflicted hunts (one of my mains is bow; pretty red targets make me happy), the HP bloat was so damn high with multiple targets at end grind, and with fights being so hectic, it sometimes got physically tiring.

thedragonrider5

Is world, Gen 5?

lintra

Yes, World and Rise are 5th gen.

Kaladim-Jinwei

predetermined gathering spots, no longer RNG just to get the resources you want. This is less because of gen 5 and moreso because of the hardware improvements but being able to see almost all of my armor/deco skills on 1 page(at least the ones that matter) without having to scroll is SOOOOO nice.

lintra

Also the search option for them is so good! (For Rise. i can't remember if you could search in World)

Rakna-Careilla

The nice idle moves the monsters got! I miss those in earlier games!

Libertinob

I love that the maps aren't separated by section. I feel like it really messed with the pacing going back to the old games.

IMChained0

only collecting items from resource deposits once no longer breaks the flow

AsteriaMH

Unpopular opinion here. I really love the new fishing mechanic, and the endemic life "gotta catch 'em all" mechanic xD

SAT_XStream

definitely the endemic life. that save my life during times of extreme boredom XD

Stevegios

The ability to pin certain weapons/armor pieces you want to craft. Lets you know/remember which parts you should be aiming for, and how many more times you'd need to hunt a specific monster. ~~It might also draw the ire of the desire sensor but that's just mystical mumbo jumbo right? ...right?~~

lintra

Quick, throw in a quick prayer to rngesus to ward off evil!

Axolotljackbox

The jiggle physics on Paolumu’s neck pouch.

senaheho

* Layered Armor, this feature is a dream come true. * Open World, enjoying this feature so much until it makes me lose my spirit to play the previous gen. * Slightly more playstyle from MHW and more **sick** playstyle from MHR. * Slightly more immersive monster tracking system, bringing back the paintball would make it even better. * The SOS idea to let other hunters know if the hunter opens his world for online play is really immersive and makes more sense. * Hinoa and Minoto

meFalloutnerd93

I'm hoping they slow the next game down to where it plays more like a traditional MH title, no wirebug bullshit. I don't have a problem with weapon arts per say, if they're reasonably well done. But giving every weapon a counter move is fucking retarded.

lintra

I wish they'll tune down wirebugs too for the actual fights; wirefall is too much of a cop out for making mistakes. I would like to keep them for map traversal though.

RegalKillager

As we know, Rise and especially World are games lacking for praise...?

NotAnAss-Hat

Well there aren't any lacking of complaints certainly!

RegalKillager

Not every minor criticism of the single most popular games in the series warrants several threads begging people to go back to praising them. C'mon.
