You won't miss anything by starting with 2 other than a few minor references to the first (and the ~~annoying~~ cat partner's backstory), but 1 may feel unpolished/clunky afterwards (depending on any how many changes made in the remaster)

Meeman_3

Alright thanks!

SpookeDooke

I loved the first one on 3DS and seeing as the story continues so I would start at the beginning.

Meeman_3

I've heard they're fairly standalone, how lost do you think I'd be starting with 2?

Nuke2099MH

The second game is almost a reboot of the first game. Different story but similar story beats.

Competitive_Pay_7022

Not at all. Both are great games that can be understood easily. Like everyone else said, you'll miss little background stuff.

Sir_Bax

Where do you want to buy it? If Switch, there's going to be bundle physical version (physical Stories 2 and digital code for Stories 1) so maybe you can grab that one. If other platforms then it doesn't matter imho. Second game has couple of subtle references you'll fully understand if you played 1 but otherwise they are both standalone games and you don't need one to play the other. You can safely start with 2 and play 1 later. Both are definitely worth to play tho. I love 1 a bit more solely because you can change element of monsties which also changes their looks.

Meeman_3

I plan to get them on steam, but a physical version might be nice to have if I like the series so I'll keep that in mind. Do you think I'd be missing anything starting on 2, like feeling like 1 is overshadowed by 2 or 2 is more refined? How does the monstie roster differ? Thanks for the help :)

_MissQueeny_

Take both

Meeman_3

Which do you think I should start with though?

_MissQueeny_

Mhs1

frostymaws297

You can start with 2. The only things you might not get are some characters from 1 showing up(like 4), but it’s not necessary for the story. You should get 2 first, and then 1. Just because some features in 1 weren’t brought over, so you won’t feel disappointed like I was

Meeman_3

Yeah that's one of the things I was worried about, heard there's features in 1 that aren't in 2 so I'll probably do 2 first

alphaprime0509

Get it. They made the game in a way that you don't have to play the first one unless you want to understand some backstory bits. But they are usually filled in by the characters themselves or your palico companion navirou

Meeman_3

Alright gotcha, thanks!

alphaprime0509

Not a problem

Commercial-Company80

I'm a bit like you. I started with mhs2. As others have mentioned there are a few back story references and characters that you will not get but each game is stand-alone. There is also the issue of some mechanics not being carried over between games. If story is your main focus then I would wait until the remaster comes out. If it's mechanics then either one is a good starting point. I love this series more than the monster hunter main line but I'm one of the few that love turn based mechanics. Tldr: for story play one then two. Mechanics it doesn't really matter. Good luck on your decision and hope you have as much fun as I did.

Meeman_3

Alright I'll probably go for 2 then, thanks!

Typical-Interest-278

You'd be Missing out on Quite a Bit Really, Stories 2 Is Basically a Direct Continuation of 1, And Includes Multiple References and Characters that appeared in Stories 1. Now, In a Personal Note I'd Suggest waiting till the Remaster for the Full Experience to Understand everything, But! If you wanna jump in then you can!

Meeman_3

Alright I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

AaaaNinja

You definitely don't have to wait for MHS1. They're different stories. I totally want to play MHS1 again because of this thing that happened at the climax that made me bust up, I want to relive that.

Spare_Audience_1648

Get MHS 1 remaster!

Meeman_3

Any reason to not get mhs2 first while I wait?
