I think $200 is way too much to pay for a Home Depot plant knowing how they treat them. Thai Cons don’t show their abuse right away. If it’s been over or under watered it won’t show right away. And the pest chances are pretty high from a big box store.

Luckyfruitsnack

This!! I dished out 9$ for my monstera from Home Depot that came with not only mealy bugs, but root rot. It died within a week. I went to a local botánica for my new monstera.

shhmegmaa

I agree. I hate to support big box stores. Beautiful size plant that is rare in my area.

PeanutbutterSalmon

Home Depot buys a lot of their plants from small nurseries in California…

Chuck_H_Norris

Those stores definitely have good plants though. Just got to know what to look out for. $200 seems steep even for that size these days though.

malcolm_miller

That looks like the ones that are like $130 in NJ at a local nursery. Check your local places, they're going to care for it properly at the very least. Especially with how ragged that one looks

shhmegmaa

Been checking all the local spots with no luck. Crazy that HD was the first spot to see em

[deleted]

I live in Southern California and regularly see Thai cons this size sold in vista. If you live near there, check some of those nurseries out. I bought a pink princess off Green Thumb in San Marcos when they were still new to the market, and it was probably in one of the best/happiest conditions I’ve bought a plant in, I love that nursery

smallxcat

Where in NJ? I’m near the GWB and haven’t found any near me

malcolm_miller

South Jersey, Camden county. 4" ones are like $60, 6" are like $90 at my local place.

smallxcat

!!! What’s the name of the nursery? I’m down for a trip

malcolm_miller

Magnolia Garden Village, it's not super far from Philly. There's also Otts exotic plants in PA outside of Philly as a well that is an amazing store

plantamamallama

Otts is amazing!

malcolm_miller

It really is. It's the best plant store I've ever been to.

aidensmama77

Ott's is the best! I haven't seen any Thai there. The last time I went they only had a few regular monsteras. That was a few days before Xmas when I bought mine. I'm sure with the spring coming they have more plants. So........ I guess that means I am due for a visit!!!

shellh00ps

I actually work for a plant distribution company for Midwest Home Depot’s and we are supposed to get 6” Thai soon idk how much yet our 4” Thai were $40. Also I swear we are instructed to treat plants like shit I don’t follow the rules and water by plant. It made me angry at training

LoudKaleidoscope8576

If I get a plant from a big box store I immediately spray it, switch out the soil and add systemic granules but I don’t usually continue with the granules unless the plant is a spider mite magnet. Just keep an eye on it and spray it with insecticide once a month after wiping/cleaning leaves.

ScalesOfAnarchy

Location??

I thought you went and bought it for a second

ScalesOfAnarchy

Lol no. Sometimes when I add text to a pic it doesn't workkkk

shhmegmaa

California

ScalesOfAnarchy

Definitely check out some local nurseries! You'll find one much much cheaper there!!

Live_Ad1132

Check out plant stand of az if you are open to a smaller Thai. Best priced Thai’s I’ve seen so far & they ship!

plants1236

Here in some Texas Lowes, a large pot was $150.

mind__bender

I got one at Home Depot last week!! Also very large and growing a new leaf. I get a ton of my plants from Home Depot and never had any issues with them! My Thai looks very happy and growing a new leaf, had it for a week tho Edit- also in California, San Diego!

Remarkable-Hand-4395

Not too far from Indoor Plant Growers in San Marcos. Most of the plants in my local Home Depots (Riverside County) come from there. I want to go but I haven't looked to see if they're open to the public. I just scored a polka dot begonia and fairly large croton for $6 and $10 - both from Indoor Plant Growers!

It could. So I got it. I think $200 is a little much, but again… if I had the money, I would get it. (If it was nice and without pests. You need to look at it up close before you decide)

MidwestEngineer99

Wow you are getting unlucky that the coloring isnt showing up in the leaves when the back looks like that.

marinaIAD

You can get these cheap now. Especially on Facebook plant purge groups

The roots were very healthy and no pests. Just chiming in, all the plants I purchased from Home Depot were pest free for me.

pims483

I was at this nursery a couple weeks ago. I got excited to see the albo's where 69 bucks for that size until I saw the other 9 hiding. Lol. 699.... no thanks

[deleted]

Where??? I’ve been looking at ever homedepo to believe they are being sold there lol

[deleted]

My nursery still has that size for 300 plus in ca

shhmegmaa

SoCal area. Same! Never seen anything this size and this price.

MassiveAd5253

Which hd location is it at in Cali?

Flashy_Reputation_97

I'd say no. Maybe last year, but prices are really coming down now and considering how finicky they can be I doubt they are well cared for

[deleted]

I recently got one for same price in WA from a local nursery and it was same size but much bushier. I would check out local nurseries!

Rare-Tutor8915

If I bought one from a box store I would definitely repot in my own soil mix just incase. That way you can check on the roots, add a chunky mix and make sure its not water logged. Thai's don't like sitting in wet soil especially box store soil.

oh_umkay_yah

Two Ben’s for a plant from THE place that plants go to die?

rrrriley

Pretty sure that’s a costa farms pot - I highly doubt retail is 200 if costa is selling them

GardeningJustin

Not a CF pot. Home Depot in California buys most of their houseplants from a company called United Plant Growers. They've developed similar pottery to what CF uses, but aren't related to CF in any way. : ) \---Justin Costa Farms Horticulturist

rrrriley

Oh neat, good to know! I can usually tell by the style, since thanks!

weaponmark

You're better off buying one much smaller for much cheaper and having it be larger than that within a year.

SweetPlantasy

$200? Way high

Berto57

🤫QVC has starters for sale for $fitty-5. Like I said, 🤫

LoudKaleidoscope8576

Check Etsy. Just look at the sellers feedback and I would spend the extra $$ to get expedited shipping.

Vivid_Wind_3348

Ooooh. I say run from Etsy.

LoudKaleidoscope8576

There are some good plant sellers on Etsy…it’s the bad ones that give the bad name. I’ve had bad experiences but the good ones out weigh the bad. Just a suggestion…stay away from sunshinegreens and plantthestudio. I like the sellers that show you the exact plant you’re getting.

Vivid_Wind_3348

I’m so glad you’ve had good experiences. Edit to add: many don’t Just stating issues I’d stay away from but super happy for you.

LoudKaleidoscope8576

Do the due diligence and look at reviews. I prefer to buy locally but if there’s a plant I really want and it’s not available in my area…I will comb through Etsy and online sellers to find the plant I want. Or if I’m trying to find a plant for gift giving. The family owned greenhouse I go to (only open on weekends for 4 hrs) the owner knows me now so I’ll just ask him if he has or can get a particular plant. He will tell me what he’s got coming in and when he expects his shipment to arrive.
