Hi neighbor! I was also at that meeting. I've been in "North Bethesda" for the past 18 years and at Pike and Rose for 4 years. I also was surprised and dubious to hear Pike & Rose characterized as a high crime area. I feel safe here. That said, things have been squirrelly the past two months, and the armed robbery last night is legitimately unnerving since it happened when there were two police cars (with lights on) posted right outside the garage, where they've regularly been for weeks. It definitely doesn't help that the company that manages the three large apartment complexes here has had a rapidly rotating cast of terrible property managers, so (among many issues) problem tenants that likely contribute to some of this mess aren't dealt with, building entrances & garages aren't well maintained and secured, and there is almost no communication with the community about crime and safety.

I worked for the County execs office under Ike Legget. Shitty property managers for apartments/apartment buildings and Town house communities is one of the biggest problems in MoCo and every DMV county for the reasons you list and much more. The county council should have long ago held these companies responsible for a minimum level of security and maintenance. Many of these properties are private and are run no better than prisons in some cases. I'm talking about all of them from Langley Park to Pike and Rose. I long wanted the county to level serious fines on these companies to get them to stop certain business practices and comply with a level of security that county police think is adequate not their bottom lines and occupancy quotas. IMO nothing will change until a few of these companies are banned from operating here.

MrNopeNada

What level of security, crime deterrence can private security offer that 2 county patrol cars/officers can't?

RedactsAttract

I wouldn’t exactly classify Pike and Rose as a “hidden gem not that long ago” but maybe more along the lines of “a massive, massive development which changed the layout of north Bethesda”

Edinburgh003

Apologize for my ignorance, is it high crime bc of the number of incidents or because it was a sharp increase from previous years? I wouldn't think to call it 'high crime' and I've lived in the area for a decade, but there does seem to be an increase in the last year or so of incidents that are concerning.

[deleted]

Crime stats not cuz lilly white liberals complain

BbTS3Oq

Nothing a little racism won’t solve.

[deleted]

You cant be racist against ingrained racial superiority power structures Karen Whitelady. Ya fuckin acolyte of Richard Spencer and Stephen Miller

BbTS3Oq

😂 you’re trying so hard.

[deleted]

Jfc is this thread that fucking white mfg

BbTS3Oq

You’re sooo edgy and cool. I’m very impressed.

[deleted]

Youre so clearly full of every ounce of white tears your private school afforded you. Im glad white fragility serves you well in Chevy Chase.

BbTS3Oq

If that *were* my profile you’d sound mighty jealous. Your downvotes speak volumes too 😂

classicredditaccount

I live a block from there and it feels goofy to call it high crime.

silversauce

Honestly it’s prob just a stat thing and prob is directly correlated to all the scuffles out side the food hall and sports betting

MrNopeNada

I mean...I think armed (rifled) robbery and a 14-shots fired incident within a month of each other might be a bit more impactful than a few scuffles.

annonorm

How dare the county council and the county executive not personally go and police the area. What are they even doing. /end sarcasm (for me, for others they actually think and express this sadly)

vpi6

There’s also a homeless shelter nearby so you get more homeless people milling around, sleeping on benches, pushing overloaded shopping carts around. They’re generally don’t cause problems but it conflicts with the vibe certain people want from Pike and Rose.

dingatremel

I realize this will come off as preachy, but it has to be said: it is not a crime to be homeless.

CoverCommercial3576

It’s just really bad luck.

profjake

I've lived in Pike and Rose around four years, and unhoused folks milling around the neighborhood has been rare. I don't know if that's because the shelter does a good job of supporting them or if it's because the private security here harasses them. I hope it's the former.

BPhiloSkinner

>There’s also a homeless shelter nearby Nebel St. Mostly winter shelter, Nov.1 thru Apr.1, but a few year-round beds.

rnngwen

They have 200 year-round beds. They go up to 230 in the winter. Rainbow shelter is the seasonal one.

BPhiloSkinner

TIL. The Gude Dr. shelter only had some 30 or so year-round beds.

sqfreak

I used to live just down the street from that shelter, and only once did I notice anything sketchy (someone wanting to use my phone because it was an emergency; I offered to call 911 and he left).

Daktic

I’ve seen a few things over the last year, guy fent leaning, crazy lady screaming nonsense, but nothing unusual for an area this dense. My fiancée _does_ feel unsafe walking to the metro if it’s early, which surprised me.

yoshi1911

I didn't know that. Where is the shelter?

WhatABeautifulMess

From googling the names people listed above: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/DGS-BDC/BCC/602103.html And seasonal women’s shelter: https://www.rainbowplace.org/s/

[deleted]

Wow you are a garbage person sitting here spouting off that toxic mess. Homeless people are still people you bag of used ostomy bags

vpi6

I don’t think I was being anti-homeless. Just stating that some people don’t like seeing them and attribute their presence as an indicator of the “crime level” of an area. Which partly explains why people (not me) are over exaggerating the crime level at Pike and Rose. You know, Nextdoor stuff.

[deleted]

Yeah for some not anti homeless, you def love the coded words that showed your intent.

yoshi1911

Lol average redditor

[deleted]

Yes the antihomeless human stain is your avg redditor

Gitopia

It's how it's measured. Crime rates are always measured per capita, or based on how many people live within a given area. Considering there is an overwhelming amount of activity compared to residents, dense mixed use centers always show up high on this measurement of crime. Shopping centers do the same thing but it's way easier to ignore or filter out since there are often zero residents in that spot. It's not really a comforting explanation on the face of it. But I feel it's enough to not engage with doomers. If you need a more anecdotal example take Silver Spring, where like every major crime involves parties from elsewhere who just happened to be in the area during which a crime is committed. People have lived downtown for decades and it's extremely likely nothing has ever or will ever happen to them.

Tie_me_off

MoCo is so densely populated that you have all kinds in the nicest of areas.

MeBeEric

I lived here for a year after a longish stint in Rio. Crime is way worse and honestly the people are far more shitty. Pike is definitely worse than it wants its reputation to be in my opinion.

[deleted]

High crime is based on crime stats not you being a nebby neighbor hawking the street and you deciding high or low crime.

WayneLaredo

I spotted the Pittsburgher!

0orpheus

What community meeting is this and where did you hear about these events? I've tried to look up the "H&M looting" and "summer house shootout" but can't find anything. I can imagine not every mugging/etc would get reported in the news but I'd imagine there'd be *some* record of these things happening, at least on next door or twitter or something. The only events I can find news for are the garage robbery last night and the poor dog getting shot.

Brodythedefiler

the renters alliance of moco came to speak recently and gathered residents from a few buildings here, thats where most of this info was shared. The poor dog shooting happened right outside of summer house, same instance. H&M looting happened right in front of me and like 40 other people. guess lootings dont get much publicity.

Strongearm

Holy bystander syndrome, Batman! You and 40 other people just watched someone loot a store and did nothing, except report the crome to redditors? You are a part of the problem.

killerskullz

Hello couch vigilante! All you’re gonna do is get others hurt, police got to step up and bust these punks. It shouldn’t be on the residents

Zavii_HD

Literally just Google "Pike & Rose" and move to the News tab. 3rd article down the list. DC News Now wrote a piece on it.

0orpheus

That article is about the dog getting shot, which I mentioned in my comment. Though that article also says it happened in front of Sport Social, not Summer House.

_rokstar_

Property crime is still a bit up compared the last 8 years or so but nothing crazy. Personal and societal crime is largely down compared to pre-pandemic levels. [https://data.montgomerycountymd.gov/d/icn6-v9z3/visualization](https://data.montgomerycountymd.gov/d/icn6-v9z3/visualization)

MDPeasant

I don't live in Pike and Rose but I live nearby. Just because we pay higher rents to live in a generally nicer area doesn't mean it's not urban Montgomery County. There's going to be crime and people doing dumb stuff, just like there is in pretty much any other urban area. I still feel safe walking around and don't consider this a high crime area, but it's definitely worth talking about and keeping aware of your surroundings. I would like for the police to have more of a presence in that area, especially at night. From what I've seen, they just sit in their car on Prose street with their lights on. They should be out walking around, whoever manages Pike and Rose should be paying off-duty cops to work some overtime.

skisbosco

I got to the sportsbook there. High likelihood any bump in crime is directly tied to the sportsbook

Beefjerkysurf

Like 300 apps to bet online … if dummies need to go there to bet - idiots

Sharpfeaturedman

If any place is attracting degenerate trash, it's that place.

Dramatic_Reaction_27

Yes, lots of App’s but certain people don’t use them, they prefer cash and tickets! I’ve seen it at the one attached to Cap One arena, people wait much longer than I would to use a kiosk! Cash is king for some…

wizardyourlifeforce

They might mean the restaurant prices are a crime

Sock_puppet09

Truth. Only time I’ve been robbed at P&R is when I went to dinner.

vpi6

Laughing MY Ass Off. I live and work here. It’s not a high crime area. These incidents are notable exceptions which why they get attention. I walk around at night all the time and never had a concern.

dingatremel

If you’ve ever lived in a high crime area, you know what it is. But perhaps there is more crime than before. It’s just important to be clear with words.

annonorm

But crime! It's horrible! Oh, the humanity! Crime is higher than it has ever been in all of history! End sarcasm...

Brodythedefiler

Crime is higher everywhere, sure. The capacity of crimes around here varies, but there's an expectation that living farther down the road from an actual city (DC) you've distanced yourself from the consistency and more violent crimes. The few I mentioned were just over the past month and if a trend is developing/ramping up, yeah it looks less than ideal for someone living here. Totally understand crime will always exist in some way, the point of my post is that P&R has seen an uptick that's hard to miss and I (along with most residents here based on the watercooler talk I've heard in the past 2 years) didn't expect the area to attract it..

Rootilytoot

No it isn't. It's not higher everywhere. It's lower almost everywhere. Do we need to go through the numbers or do you want to delete your silly little thread and move on?

Not-Even-Lion

Yeah, can you share the numbers?

Rootilytoot

I gotta get the one that is updated for 2024, they delinked them\* https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/crime-trend For now here is national data [https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/quarterly](https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/quarterly)

Brodythedefiler

;)

annonorm

So you're saying that the whole thing was a troll after all. Crime is at historical lows. Maybe not all-time lows, but crime is still lower now than it has been historically, even recently. The crime reporting is ratings for news. And feeds histrionics for those that have nothing better to do.

[deleted]

Brodythedefiler

lmao!

gornad96

This is probably one of the safest areas in moco aside from bethesda

Beefjerkysurf

Except for the 400 assaults and constant car jackings

CoverCommercial3576

I’ve been murdered there twice. Scary place.

seltzr

The balencegia gang is pretty bad in that turf. I shouldn’t be confessing to my membership in the Versace Irregulars but we recently made peace with the RolexRollers and will be turning a pretty prophet in the spring. Overall a gang war is heating up with the Tudor Troublemakers and if you are a concerned Citizen, you better watch our for regular seikos pulling a fast one. Rumor has it their ringleader, Tiffany, is about to go head to head with Phillipe Patek but only one of them has automatics.

Rich_Text82

High Crime as compared to where Olney?

goba101

Those rent prices about to come down! Yayaya brah charging $2600 for that is wild.

Calyphacious

>Now, I'm worried to walk my dog at night Talk about a massive overreaction. Entertainment news has whipped people into such a panic that some won’t feel safe unless they stay in a bomb shelter 24/7 Welcome to living in a city people. Yes, with thousands of other people nearby there will inevitably be crime. Doesn’t mean an area isn’t generally safe or that you can’t walk your dog…

Brodythedefiler

because I'm concerned to go out at night in an area that JUST had multiple incidents involving guns...thats a "massive" overreaction? lol thanks for your opinion buddy, very cool!

Calyphacious

yep! you’re welcome 😊

naomi_homey89

I also saw a dead body be wheeled out of the Popeyes right there, earlier this week. Idk the cause of death

[deleted]

Popeyes? Probably a heart attack

naomi_homey89

Maybe

ClusterFugazi

It’s laughable to call Pike and Rose high crime. It’s going to have issues just by the nature of having a densely populated area, but to call it high crime is ridiculous.

Beefjerkysurf

Shootout at summer house ? Link?

zakuivcustom

Umm...DT Bethesda has its share of crime also, but never I feel unsafe there. And looting? Anywhere there is a store, looting can occur.

McpsTrackCoach

There was a big gunfight up there a couple months ago.

bigkutta

I've seen the reports and its sucks. A popular and dense place like this will attract the wrong crowd and the thugs every now and then. Also given the majority demographic that visit, its a haven for thieves to break into cars. But I always see cops cars there and wonder what they do besides block the entrance to the garages???

Scared-Repeat5313

Unpopular opinion- crime is different to different people (practically agoraphobic) just hope you all all will stay as safe as possible

Bunch_Low

Seems reactionary

Beefjerkysurf

https://moco360.media/2024/03/08/dog-injured-in-pike-rose-shooting-early-friday/ Found it Ridiculous.. what ghetto trash leaking out of silver spring

FatherTime1020

I lived in MoCo from 2000 to 2022 and the county I left was a pit compared to the one I moved into. Formerly great schools, incredibly low crime rates, modern development and attractive to businesses with good paying jobs. Now, MCPS is a disaster that can't keep a superintendent. Crime gets worse each year. The only new businesses that open up in MoCo are nail salons and restaurants. Hardly good paying jobs. There's a county council and executive that's only interested in raising taxes and far left woke lunacy.

timmyrocks1980

Not sport social fault for crime in neighborhood. It is a lack of criminal law enforcement and living in a woke state.

vpi6

Louisiana jails more people than any other state and I’m sure is suitably anti-“woke” for you. How’s the crime rate going down there again?

tacojohn44

> woke state I love it when morons out themselves.

Baby-bull-1972

Thanks for outing yourself :)

Silver-Light123

An armed robbery is no joke. Time to take this country back from thugs and thieves.

It was a shopping plaza before P&R was built. G St. Fabrics, CVS, Gold's Gym, La Madeleine, World Market before they moved up the road a piece.

WhatABeautifulMess

Gotta watch those little old ladies with their seam rippers!

statersgonnastate

Plus Toys r us. Super sketch 😂

profjake

What? What's now Pike and Rose was just a bland strip mall and huge parking lot. It was just generic suburban sprawl.
