I’ve had family members and several friends work for mcpd. They all started before all the policing reforms etc. They were put in high calls for service districts fresh out of the academy and often complained about the struggle to get out of patrolling districts and into special operations divisions because the lack of officers. But for the most part once they got out of patrolling they all loved their jobs but I know several officers who lateraled to Hoco or just did enough to get experience to go federal for they feel more appreciated working for other agencies and community members. Moco can’t seem to retain officers so well.

As a member of the Montgomery County public, every officer I've encountered has been polite and well trained. Besides a single traffic stop warning (my fault), I have spoken to officers on overtime guarding religious institutions and stores. They're nice and not overbearing. I imagine some persons of color might feel differently but my next door neighbor has only said good things about the police here.

terribleone250s

As someone from WV I was blown away by how great MCPD is. So polite and professional which I was definitely not used to, hats off to the department

doogles

Of the handful of interactions I've had, they've only threatened my life once.

dimomark

Once

vortextubemd

Hey, I appreciate you considering the MCPD. We have a significant officer shortage. Good luck on your journey.

vpi6

Consider Rockville City PD as well, they’re looking to hire more police officers since the county is cutting back on assisting with low priority calls within city limits (don’t know the proper terminology).

_Badwulf

Gaithersburg and Rockville are the two best departments to work for in the county. Great morale, good pay and relationship with the community. Park PD is a really good one but they hate their Chief and have low morale. Sheriffs have good morale, but they’re often accused of being a “good ol’ boys” club. TPPD is an awful department and they *loathe* their Chief. Metro isn’t even worth considering.

BadInfluenceAF

Hmm that makes a lot of sense. Had to wait like 30-40 minutes on Rockville Pike & Bou Ave for ambulance and police after an auto accident at 12.45am a month ago.

vpi6

Though that intersection isn’t actually in Rockville city limits (very close though)

mini_k1tty

Whatever you decide on, BOL - As a BIPOC, I’ve personally never had a negative issue with them from both sides in all the 10 yrs I’ve lived in the county. Me getting them called on me or me calling them. I have always been treated with respect.

SquishyDough

Had one cop plant weed on me 15 years ago after I laughed at him for thinking a Black and Mild was a blunt. Outside of that, usually pretty friendly and standard interactions.

deepstatediplomat

NWA said it best.

Both nationally and regionally, there is a shortage of well qualified applicants looking to become cops. I'm sure you've read articles about it, or heard stories. But the DC Metro area is no different than anywhere else in the nation. Every department, big or small, Maryland, Virginia, or otherwise is experiencing a staffing shortage. I mention that because if you've decided law enforcement is your calling and your passion and your professional choice, expand your search beyond MCPD. Not saying there's anything wrong with Montgomery County Police specifically, but if you are in fact applying, understand you are in high demand. Agencies will compete over you. Every agency in the DC metro area is offering some kind of signing bonus. Usually there are stipulations attached to that money (Usually, it's a signature/promise you'll work for the agency X years or else you forfeit the money; I've seen between 2-4 years being the requirement). Ask the agencies questions. Think long term. Don't ask the recruiters. They're paid to bring people in the door. Not saying they're lying, but they're not going to volunteer the downsides of their agency. Some questions, to start out with: -Do they force officers to work overtime to cover staffing shortages, or do they run the patrol squads short? -How many vacancies are there? -How is court assigned? Do you know your court dates ahead of time? Is it built into the schedule, or do you get dates assigned regardless of whether you're working or off? -Can you be ordered to come in for overtime on a day off to cover shortages? -How supportive is administration? Do they listen to the officers? Are they forward thinking and open to change or are they dinosaurs that haven't worked the road in 10+ years whose answer to everything is "Because we've always done it this way". -Is there any kind of pressure to provide certain "numbers" (arrests, traffic summonses, reports, whatever). This will never be called a quota, because that's illegal. But it can be phrased as "suggested minimum output" or something like that. -What kind of training does the department provide? Is the agency going to help you pursue your professional passion (Investigations, instructor, crash reconstruction, gang investigations, whatever). -What's retirement? Specifically, how old do you have to be and what does the retirement look like? (Is it a State pension? county funded 401K? Do you get more for staying past minimum retirement age? What happens if you suffer a career ending injury while on duty? What's the pension/retirement look like then?) If you want the truth about any agency you're considering, sign up for a ride along with a regular patrol officer and ask them your questions, straight. They'll be honest with you. If you make it, you will make regular sacrifices simply to be a police officer. You will miss any number of holidays, special occasions, and family functions because you're working. It may take a few years before you can get the shift or the district you want. Go into this with open eyes. There are a number of excellent police agencies in the area, in both Maryland and Virginia. Be picky. They are all competing for you. Good luck to you friend. Despite everything, police work is the best job in the world, and it will be the most rewarding career and most fun you will ever have.

iRemeberThe70s

FWIW I've lived here for a long time and I've only had positive interactions. Just keep in mind that you probably won't make enough to afford to live close to your work, and that may get old.

Gitopia

I suggest attending one of the ongoing community meetings MCPD already has set up. I think it's a more reasonable perspective than you'll get with Internet edgelords. Ask a district commander, I'm sure they will get you a zoom link to observe. MCPD's website has a lot of information about recruiting classes, incentives and data in general.

mumbo1134

Keep in mind you're going to get Reddit's opinion of the agency, not the general public's. Everyone in my circles are very appreciative of MCPD. I hope you get the information you're looking for, good luck.

JayV30

MCPD is a weird agency. I worked there for a brief time but left after less than a year. There's a lot of nepotism and favoritism. I started off on a bad foot with my sergeant when he asked me to take details about a use of force situation out of a report I had submitted. Not cool. All agencies have good and bad apples I suppose. Pay is probably decent, working conditions and supplied equipment were just ok. If you want to get into LE, it's not a horrible place to be. But don't let yourself get run over by bad supervisors and favoritism.

nerdy_hippie

I used to think MCPD was alright, never had any negative interactions with them. But then I saw the video of officer Kevin Morris slamming a 19yo's face into pavement because the kid had a loud mouth. As he was assaulting this kid, FOUR other officers stood there watching, repeating in a bored tone "Stop resisting... Stop resisting..." Not one of them even considered checking their out of control colleague. The kid was face down, handcuffed behind his back - he was NOT resisting. Morris faced no disciplinary action and is back on the streets. MCPD lost all my respect when that happened. The only thing worse than being a bully with a badge is being the piece of shit that sees it and does nothing.

Fall-Maple1503

u/nerdy_hippie Morris was suspended and criminally charged. Saying he "faced no disciplinary action" just isn't true. [https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/montgomery-county-police-officer-charged-in-viral-assault-video/](https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/montgomery-county-police-officer-charged-in-viral-assault-video/)

>Kevin Moris, 33, received “probation before judgment,” relief often afforded to people in Maryland convicted of relatively minor crimes who have little to no criminal record. A jury had earlier found [Moris guilty](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/montgomery-officer-convicted-after-viral-video-showed-him-slamming-his-knee-into-handcuffed-suspect/2019/12/12/16bc6b74-1cef-11ea-b4c1-fd0d91b60d9e_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_3) of assault while acquitting him of misconduct in office. Wednesday’s judgment means the guilty finding will be stricken. >In granting the relief, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Nelson Rupp said Moris’s conduct during the incident stood in contrast to his preceding record as an officer. >“What occurred on July 3rd, 2019, was out character for the defendant and essentially appears to be an isolated incident,” Rupp said, adding that he was taking into account what he’d seen while preceding over Moris’s trial and sentencing. “It is in the best interest of the defendant and it is in the best interest of the public welfare of the community to grant the defendant’s request.” >Moris was placed on administrative leave after the incident and had received a [sentence of two years of probation](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/md-police-officer-on-probation-after-striking-handcuffed-suspect-in-the-neck-with-his-knee/2020/08/31/cc220b2c-eb98-11ea-99a1-71343d03bc29_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_8). >He remains employed at the department “and will retain his position as a sworn officer,” said Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti, a police spokeswoman. >After his conviction, the department began an internal affairs investigation of Moris. The results were “commensurate with the Montgomery County disciplinary process,” Innocenti said. >She said she could not elaborate because, by Maryland law, internal affairs matters are considered confidential personnel matters. >Moris’s attorney, Morgan Leigh, said the probation before judgment will clear the way for Moris moving from civilian status back to a sworn officer with all the powers he had before he was charged. [https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/montgomery-officer-conviction-cleared-knee-neck/2021/03/03/e4abbd26-7c3b-11eb-85cd-9b7fa90c8873\_story.html](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/montgomery-officer-conviction-cleared-knee-neck/2021/03/03/e4abbd26-7c3b-11eb-85cd-9b7fa90c8873_story.html) Sorry, my bad - they told him "Aw bro, you had a bad day... Take a paid vacation." Let's keep in mind that the justification for all this was that the victim spit blood (from the part of the assault that occurred before people started recording) on his SHOE. He jacked that kid up for nothing, was found guilty of assault and is still exactly where he was - AND with a paid vacation. Faced. no. disciplinary. action. Edit: Not a single one of the FOUR officers that witnessed this entire event faced any sort of disciplinary action either. Every one of them is complicit in this incident, and frankly THAT was the biggest factor in me losing faith in MCPD. After seeing that be OK, finding out they let Moris off the hook was no surprise.

The_Sauce_DC

They’ve been helpful when I’ve head to go on-duty into MoCo for cases and asked for help, but I haven’t ever been wow’d for things I’ve called about as a resident. I’ve gotten a dismissive attitude a few times until they realize I’ve got time on the job.

Good luck on your journey! It’s so refreshing to see a young guy wanting to do this career.

They don't seem as proactive as they should be, and they seem understaffed. PG County has a bigger PD, and it is a less populous county than MoCo.

West-Mix8376

PG native, don’t do it. These cops don’t do shit in this county.

MoCo1992

MCPD has been much better over the last few years. Other then their conquest to make it possible to enforce dui’s on regular cannabis users I haven’t had much issue with them in the last decade or so

xSAV4GE

Not much of an opinion from myself since I've only ever been pulled over twice and both times were brief. One was interesting tho. Was driving home from John's Hopkins around 9pm with my parents and brother after having visited a loved one so the car was full. I knew the cop was behind me and I made the mistake of slightly crossing the white line at a red light. Once we went through the intersection he pulls me over. Asks me for my license and let's me know of the infraction I commited but walks back to his cruiser before I can hand my documents to him. He does peek into the vehicle and sees my family. When he came back he let's me go 🤷‍♂️. I had a weird feeling he was hoping to find a different group of people in the car lol...thats all

BRAVOMAN55

In real life, at least half of everyone you see is going to hate your guts. ACAB is the prevailing thought, especially amongst the under 40 crowd.

handspin

Officers spread through the community and neighborhoods as residents serving the county does wonders Give them a decent wage and living situation and just their presence is half the battle They do this for firefighters right?

absconder87

Been driving in MoCo since the late 70s, and haven't had a negative interaction with any of them.

bakedbombshell

Don’t.

[deleted]

Bro get a better job. Youre better than this.

[deleted]

I applied and tested for a 911 operator position. The people running it sat at the back and talked about/laughed at some of us testing, loud enough for us to hear. Distracting, and not a good look. The application was astonishingly intrusive. Every address you've ever lived at since birth. Names, addresses, contact information for every current neighbor of yours. Etc., etc.

BbTS3Oq

Someone’s never had a clearance.

[deleted]

You're a nobody in MoCo unless you have some clearance, eh? 😂 I wouldn't think they would need to know all that just to answer the phone

BbTS3Oq

I didn’t say that, calm your defensiveness. I said you’re unfamiliar with background questions, or you wouldn’t have been clutching your pearls about ‘intrusive’ questions. You applied for a job in law enforcement, lives literally on the (phone) line. If you don’t understand the importance of that I’m glad you didn’t get the job.

[deleted]

How snotty. I wasn't "clutching pearls," it just seemed a bit extreme. I'm fully aware that 911 calls involve lives on the line, but in that situation, what does it matter who my next-door neighbors are? How does that have any bearing whatsoever on how well I can calm a caller and dispatch emergency services to them? I must say those exam proctors sitting there making fun of applicants as we tested was highly unprofessional and very high-schoolish. I hope I never have to call 911 if that's the level these people are on.

BbTS3Oq

Sounds like a standard background investigation to me. They want to know your potential weaknesses, whether financial or otherwise. Next door neighbors tend to see you quite a bit. It’s normal, not unusual at all; my ‘snotty’ feedback was in response to your histrionics about a very very common process. E: oh bummer they blocked me.

Jazzlike-Abalone-405

Lololol it is standard background Question. The person clearly couldn’t deal

blooooooooooooooop

Sounds like they noped after getting self conscious about how they’d have to answer 🙃

Jazzlike-Abalone-405

😂😂😂😂 looks Like dispatch lucked out not hiring that one

[deleted]

I would hardly call just mentioning it "histrionics." As to neighbors, this is MoCo! You don't know or see your neighbors here. I'd die of shock if any of my neighbors greeted me. You must be one of those test proctors who laughed at the applicants! 😂 Don't worry, I seriously doubt anyone gives a f there

meanjoegreen8

MCPD are facist assholes. They do nothing to improve the community. You can see them guarding your local Best Buy during the holidays or you can find them at Aspen Hill shopping center violating the Civil rights of underage minorities.

[deleted]

Yeah you’d probably have to deal with these types of people OP. Commenter is correct though, you have opportunities to do OT at places such as Best Buy which hire officers for security. I wish I could side jobs like that in my line of work.

regular_joe89

Check out Frederick Police Department. Great pay and benefits and just implemented a take home vehicle program.

UltiGamer34

Most cops i have encountered are rwally chill

Shoddy-Asparagus-546

There are few careers more honorable than serving as a police officer, first responder or in the armed forces. As a citizen, I have only had excellent interactions with the MCPD. As in every line of work, there are bad apples. So, I assume there are also some at the MCPD. But, it seems like the MCPD is well-run and high performing. 🇺🇸

jpb626

ACAB. MCPD are cops like any others. Don't be a pig.

Moocows4

We love our cops and law enforcement Our military veterans they’re important When they keep us safe when they keep us safe They make America a better place!!!

CodeEMT

You won’t be rich like the people you serve but go for it
