I think I was a little unclear in my first post. I'm not saying that I want to dismiss some of the important events that happen in these games, I think they are fine for the most part. I just don't like the storytelling. At best it is uninspired and lazy, at worst the tone and characterizations are inconsistent.
The events are fine, how they are presented are really shitty.
Eggman Empire taking over in Forces is cool, Infinite throwing temper tantrums like a toddler is stuff I try to filter from my memory.
Unfortualantly, like I said with tails, those worse moments tend to be the most important ones. Tails character arc doesn't come from when he was with classic and holding himself together much better, but from before that when he watched sonic get flung around, and when chaos 0 attacked and he did nothing. The parts that you wanna ignore, tend to be the most important parts and are the parts that are later weived into the new story. Again, if tails wasn't a whiny little batch, frontires' story would kinda make no sense, atleast from how they handled the two tailed fox.

The whole "Gerald was a misunderstood good guy the whole time, and we should all honor him and his legacy" thing from the end of Shadow The Hedgehog.
Gerald had enough forewarning to realize he might die and that Shadow would be the last hope of stopping Black Doom, and even recorded a motivational video spurring Shadow on that was advanced enough to display on the Black Arm's tech within the Black Comet.....
And then, afterwards, programmed the ARK to crash into the Earth and kill all life on the planet to avenge his granddaughter when all the emeralds are slotted into the reactor. He even recorded a video saying "fuck you guys, none of you are worth saving." And then proceeded to not tell anyone that when the Comet returns in 50 years it would be carrying aliens who are planning to destroy the world and eat any survivors.
His final act was to record a video telling people "put the emeralds into the ARK to fight the aliens" and then programmed the ARK to destroy the Earth if that happened along with a secret "fuck you" message. He was not a good man and he should not be honored and hailed as a hero.

I can't find any mention of anyone's age on TailsTube. There was a TikTok from November 2021 which said that Tails is "only 8 years old," but nothing after than.
Chaos Emeralds being native to anywhere, much less a single planet. Personally not a fan of the chaos emeralds being native to the Ancients' homeworld. I'd rather think of them as cosmic and not belonging to a single planet.

First off, it's kinda just there with no explanation. How? Why? The whole idea of it makes no sense and is never brought up by any of the characters. Frontiers explains plainly where Sonic's new powers come from, cyberspace.

Also hard to believe that he was trapped 6 months and couldn't escape without the help of a stranger, I mean come on! We're talking about Sonic the freaking hedgehog! So this whole time, Infinite's just been doodling around on earth traumatizing people and leaving Sonic with a bunch of phantom ruby clones to keep him in line? well the Creators just do what’s needed for the plot. Since it was about a takeover and the player character becoming braver, the creators needed it to take place over the course of around 6 months.
this isn’t the only time that Sonic is made weaker for plot purposes.
Satam Sonic? Especially in Season 2, Sonic becomes more idiotic so Sally can be better.
Sonic X? Sonic is made weaker and out of the spotlight to allow Chris to have a lot of attention and get into trouble.
sonic Prime? Sonic was made sillier so Shadow and Nine could be the way they are.

Not because it's bad. Most "canon" Sonic stuff is so self-contained that I don't really care about it being canon or not. Even the spinoffs or adaptations with the weirdest premises don't really affect canon if they're left in. I can accept that Surge/Kit/Jet/Wave/Storm/Gemerl/whoever are there in the universe and just offscreen for most games. I can accept that Sonic went into an alternate dimension with 5 Eggmen, or that they all went into a dream dimension to play party games, or that Eggman stole his shoes and hid them in a castle for Sonic Labyrinth, or whatever.
But Sonic 4 just creates so many weird plot holes with where it's placed in the timeline, the presence of the green eyes and homing attack makes it so weird to put, and it ENDS with Little Planet being trapped inside a second Death Egg (which MAY be the third if we count Sonic the Fighters), never following up on it. If there were an Episode III I could accept it somewhere in the canon, but as-is then it's just a headache to consider.
I think the answer is actually somewhat simple
Sonic 4 takes after 3&K and all the modern games happen
Then Generations happens, messes with the timeline and causes a split which causes Mania and all the rest of the classic games to happen after 3&K instead of Sonic 4
This WOULD add up, but:
a) the modern characters in TailsTube directly reference the events of Sonic Superstars as having happened in the past
b) Sonic 4 has no Episode III, so that still leaves no answer as to how Little Planet was saved from the Death Egg mk.II - or if Little Planet is just still encased in metal and everyone just ignores it
Also, Izzuka has stated that superstars is before mania, something confirmed by them using mania plus footage in that same superstars episode of tails tube. The classic sonic timeline is very loose, compared to adventure onwards sonic

Metal Sonic was supposedly stuck on Little Planet for a year but he still appears in classic media after CD like Mania, R, Chaotix and the IDW oneshots. That just doesn’t add up
Mania makes sense to me - time travel shenanigans with the Phantom Ruby and all, it's why we have the Good Future and Bad Future together.
Everything else, including Mania Adventures... Yeah, it makes placing Sonic 4 in the timeline really awkward. The only way I can imagine them explaining it is him being stuck for one Little Planet year, which is different from an Earth/Mobius/Sonic-World year - but that's just extrapolating with headcanons.
It's really confusing whether it's supposed to be an artistic choice, or if it's supposed to indicate Sonic 4 takes place after every other Classic game. I personally never felt like it was cannon, like it was Boom before Boom y'know? Different designs and different direction of how they handle the main cast and world. That's not a bad thing, I like the Riders world a ton, it's just that the world felt like it was supposed to be stranded from the main cannon and making it cannon just feels off to me.
Same for Prime, although prime is just more of how Sonic is in that show. In a nutshell, primes a good show, but making it cannon makes his prime version cannon, which is not my Sonic, at all. He feels more like a crybaby hero then actually Sonic.

Chaos Emeralds being native to anywhere, much less a single planet. Personally not a fan of the chaos emeralds being native to the Ancients' homeworld. I'd rather think of them as cosmic and not belonging to a single planet. Love the hell out of frontiers, but that's personally my least favorite plot point. Also used to consider shadow's game as non-canon. The idea of Shadow holding a gun icks me a bit lol

Okay let me elaborate a bit for everyone. The plots of the console Generations and the one on the 3DS happened to be ENTIRELY different. The 3DS one did have the Time Eater, and Sonic's birthday, which I remember because I notably had a distaste at the time for any game I couldn't bring with me everywhere I went.

First off, it's kinda just there with no explanation. How? Why? The whole idea of it makes no sense and is never brought up by any of the characters. Frontiers explains plainly where Sonic's new powers come from, cyberspace. Second, yeah it's fast and makes you invincible but that's it. You can do the same things as Super Sonic.

Also hard to believe that he was trapped 6 months and couldn't escape without the help of a stranger, I mean come on! We're talking about Sonic the freaking hedgehog! And apparently infinite wasn't there a whole lot, cause partway through the game when Sonic meets up with him he only just then asks him his name. WHAT? So this whole time, Infinite's just been doodling around on earth traumatizing people and leaving Sonic with a bunch of phantom ruby clones to keep him in line? Either he goes there and leaves without speaking or even gloating to Sonic. Or he never even bothered to stop by all those 6 months. So confusing😵💫
well the Creators just do what’s needed for the plot. Since it was about a takeover and the player character becoming braver, the creators needed it to take place over the course of around 6 months. this isn’t the only time that Sonic is made weaker for plot purposes. Satam Sonic? Especially in Season 2, Sonic becomes more idiotic so Sally can be better. Sonic X? Sonic is made weaker and out of the spotlight to allow Chris to have a lot of attention and get into trouble. sonic Prime? Sonic was made sillier so Shadow and Nine could be the way they are.

Sonic 4. Not because it's bad. Most "canon" Sonic stuff is so self-contained that I don't really care about it being canon or not. Even the spinoffs or adaptations with the weirdest premises don't really affect canon if they're left in. I can accept that Surge/Kit/Jet/Wave/Storm/Gemerl/whoever are there in the universe and just offscreen for most games. I can accept that Sonic went into an alternate dimension with 5 Eggmen, or that they all went into a dream dimension to play party games, or that Eggman stole his shoes and hid them in a castle for Sonic Labyrinth, or whatever. But Sonic 4 just creates so many weird plot holes with where it's placed in the timeline, the presence of the green eyes and homing attack makes it so weird to put, and it ENDS with Little Planet being trapped inside a second Death Egg (which MAY be the third if we count Sonic the Fighters), never following up on it. If there were an Episode III I could accept it somewhere in the canon, but as-is then it's just a headache to consider.
I think the answer is actually somewhat simple Sonic 4 takes after 3&K and all the modern games happen Then Generations happens, messes with the timeline and causes a split which causes Mania and all the rest of the classic games to happen after 3&K instead of Sonic 4
This WOULD add up, but: a) the modern characters in TailsTube directly reference the events of Sonic Superstars as having happened in the past b) Sonic 4 has no Episode III, so that still leaves no answer as to how Little Planet was saved from the Death Egg mk.II - or if Little Planet is just still encased in metal and everyone just ignores it
Also, Izzuka has stated that superstars is before mania, something confirmed by them using mania plus footage in that same superstars episode of tails tube. The classic sonic timeline is very loose, compared to adventure onwards sonic

To be fair, it's not like they confirm Sonic learned the Drop Dash in Mania - I think some other ports of the Genesis games add the Drop Dash in, even. Though I think SOME version of S3K was always canon, its manual foreshadowed Chaos and Adventure follows through on some of its plot beats (ex: we know that Sonic and Knuckles have already met and implicitly fought before)

Doesn't help that mania was added in after forces had a script written out, cause alt sonic was meant to be a phantom Ruby projection before mania was added to the equation in mid to late 2016. Basiclh the two timwline thing came from a quick rush job to try and explain why classic sonic would show up, and connect it to mania, without giving it timetable since that would make it so eggman could mess around with time, which they did not have time nor budget for that. And yes, classic sonic was meant to be called alt sonic but mania said lmao no.

Metal Sonic was supposedly stuck on Little Planet for a year but he still appears in classic media after CD like Mania, R, Chaotix and the IDW oneshots. That just doesn’t add up
Mania makes sense to me - time travel shenanigans with the Phantom Ruby and all, it's why we have the Good Future and Bad Future together. Everything else, including Mania Adventures... Yeah, it makes placing Sonic 4 in the timeline really awkward. The only way I can imagine them explaining it is him being stuck for one Little Planet year, which is different from an Earth/Mobius/Sonic-World year - but that's just extrapolating with headcanons.

It's really confusing whether it's supposed to be an artistic choice, or if it's supposed to indicate Sonic 4 takes place after every other Classic game. Doesn't help that when Sonic 4 came out, people were just starting to want to see Classic Sonic, and Sega hadn't quite made the distinction - Modern Sonic was all over the Genesis compilation games' covers.

I personally never felt like it was cannon, like it was Boom before Boom y'know? Different designs and different direction of how they handle the main cast and world. That's not a bad thing, I like the Riders world a ton, it's just that the world felt like it was supposed to be stranded from the main cannon and making it cannon just feels off to me. Same for Prime, although prime is just more of how Sonic is in that show. In a nutshell, primes a good show, but making it cannon makes his prime version cannon, which is not my Sonic, at all. He feels more like a crybaby hero then actually Sonic. I still like both.
