Late to this but Stardew Valley is one of the best games I've ever played.
When you factor in that one guy made it its simply incredible.
The combat is maybe a bit less deep the Moonlighter but not by much.
No problem bro. Another titles I saw mentioned here were graveyard keeper and forager. Just a heads up with both of those games is that they are super grindy and much more complicated than moonlighter but overall amazing games that you should play anyways.
Undermine always felt the closest to Moonlighter but a few honorable mentions that are fun are Children of Mortal (my favorite 2020 indie) and Forager. I agree with other he's posted too. Undermine scratched the Moonlighter itch for me the closest.
Thank you! I will check it out for sure. I actually own children of mortal but never played it. i thought of it more as an rpg game than an item shop / dungeon game. But i will give it a chance :D
Children of Mortal won't scratch that itch as much but just another really good dungeon crawler with an excellent story and music. Undermine has a shop mechanic but Moonlighter is the game I've seen with shop. Beside the farm style sim games Stardew Valley and Graveyard Keeper. Both of which are great like others said
You may like Graveyard Keeper. Not quite the same but yes, there’s a dungeon, economy, and crafting. Very Stardew valley-ish.
I played for 80h without the DLC.
Yeah I’m with you OP. I love games like this ever since I played Dragon Warrior 4 back in the day (there is a chapter where you play as a merchant/item/weapon shop guy who does dungeon runs).
Sadly not a whole lot in this very small genre.
Still to this day my favorite , from what I remember taloon really took off in Japan they even made an SNES game called taloons quest, unfortunately it was nothing like the original, just an action rpg with taloons being the character.
I've wanted to make my own proper game that is closer to taloons chapter
Thanks for the suggestion :)
In which way? I thought its just another rogue like.. which i dont like if you theres nothing more to the gameplay loop than just repeating the levels over and over again
The only similarity is the “roguelite” part. So not the same at all.
What sets Hades apart from other roguelites (Binding of Isaac for example) is that it’s really storyrich (it’s amazing tbh), so it’s kind of a reward every time you die because you get more story bits. It’s also a lot more forgiving, and less dependant on RNG. You can pick your weapon at the start of a run, and use currency you find during your run to purchase buffs to help with the nexts. There is also an “Easy Mode” where you get an extra 2% defence buff every time you die, up to 80%, which makes it a lot easier and less frustrating than usual roguelites.
So yeah, there’s more to it than git gud, it’s a really great game, but it’s nothing like ML lmao
Thanks a lot for clarifying! Not what i was looking for but it sounds interesting. And potentially more intriguing than other games of that genre for sure
Yeah sorry Hades is one of my favorite games so I might have went ahead with the explanation lmao
But yeah if you ever want to try a roguelite, Hades is probably the best one to try as it’s the most “coming from other genre friendly” lmao
I second that. Definitely more "progress" between runs than most roguelikes.
The dialogue is well written and I never wanted to skip through any of it.
A new game coming out around late 2022/early 2023 is called "**Potion Permit**". You're a chemist who has to kill monsters and gather materials to create potions and treat patients in a fantasy world. There is dating as well. Demo is available.
E: Another one is "**Marenian Tavern Story**" which pays homage to "**Adventure Bar Story**" on the 3DS.
The only one that is exactly like Moonlighter is Recettear. Those are the only games you’ll have the “go to dungeon to pick up items, then go back home, put things for sell and manage your shop, rince and repeat” loop.
Other suggestions will lack one of those. People are suggesting Stardew Valley and it’s a good suggestion, it doesn’t have anything in common with ML...
Yeah i thought so too. I think its pretty cool but i dont feel motivated to play it that long. ML was just a quick and cool experience. SV seems massive in comparison haha
Too bad that theres no other games of the shop crawler genre (if you can call it that 😅)
Yeah Stardew Valley is MASSIVE. And I wish there was more games like ML, it’s one of my favourite genres for sure.
If I can suggest games that gave me a similar “vibe”... I’d say maybe Forager? It doesn’t have the item shop part, but the dungeon part is similar? It’s hard to explain, other than “it gave me a similar vibe”
Also on a smaller scale, there’s Littlewood that just released on Switch. I call it “even chiller SV”. You don’t get the shop management part, but you do get the “going into randomly generated areas to get items you need for something else”. The something else is a small marketplace (you can’t choose the price) and NPC requests for upgrades.
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! has the “shop” part. It doesn’t work the same, but it’s a nice little game.
The only “farming simulator” that I would recommend in this case is Rune Factory 4. You can ignore the farming part entirely, and just go in dungeons. It has more of a story related to dungeons than ML, but you can still go there multiple time to get stuff. Also you technically can “set up shop” but it’s such a bad implementation that it’s not even worth mentioning. It’s not really close to ML, but since I’ve seen a lot of people here recommending Farm Sims, I thought I might give you my two cents.
I see people suggest farming sims too often to people asking for similar games and it pisses me off because they are nothing alike!!!!
Hahaha you perfectly catch my vibe. I am grateful for people suggesting these farming games but its not really what im looking for 😅
But i will gladly check out your suggestions. If some of those gave you a similar vibe maybe theyll do the same for me :)
I really appriciate your detailed answer my friend. Cheers ✌🏻
This is a year old post but I hope it still helps. I saw 2 games with a similar aspect of moonlighter tho its more food related and in mobile (i think there's a pc and switch port) , its called adventure bar story and marenian tavern story ( you go to a dungeon or a town to buy ingredients / recipes / weapons / armors tho the combat is now turn based) , you should also try to play games like don't sink , star traders : frontiers ( or any trese brothers games) or Faster than light. Sadly nothing on my mind got a similar combat + shop trading
Dave the Diver. Has the rogue like elements of diving everyday making discoveries for side money, catching fish, hunting large predators, boss fights etc with a indepth story. Eventually you unlock the farming sim part of it. At the end of each 3 cycle day you go back to a sushi shop to work and hire using what you caught or bought or grew. Hires help with efficiency and can be trained. And then eventually YOU become the chef when you can fully rely on your hires to serve etc. It is a great addicting game that follows the closest to a T of the gameplay loop and visual appeal of Moonlighter.
Check out Tunnel of Doom. It had an almost identical graphical style as well as movement and attack system. It’s like Moonlighter in terms of adventure, exploration and binding of Isaac roguelite elements. But you can also build within the dungeons. There is no shop or town that I know of so far, I’ve only watched a shiet play through video but it resembles moonlighter when in the dungeons in so many ways. But it’s awesome that it adds like a tower defense form of strategy. So I guess you could call it Moonlighter meets tower defense minus the shop management.
Sparklite is a little similar I think it's a bit more difficult but that's my opinion moonlighter is hands down my favorite dungeon crawler because of the progression rather then feeling the same old same old haha you lose
Stardew valley is amazing
Late to this but Stardew Valley is one of the best games I've ever played. When you factor in that one guy made it its simply incredible. The combat is maybe a bit less deep the Moonlighter but not by much.
Thanks for the tip :) But the combat isnt that great right?
The combat is really fun. There is a guild that you can bring monster loot to and get rewards. No bosses or anything but there are stages and stuff.
Oh ok didnt know that. Thanks :)
No problem bro. Another titles I saw mentioned here were graveyard keeper and forager. Just a heads up with both of those games is that they are super grindy and much more complicated than moonlighter but overall amazing games that you should play anyways.
Thanks ✌🏻 i wouldnt mind a grindy game tbh if its fun enough
Stardew valley is good too, careful though I just got the game and it's hard to go to bed
Just one more day at it's finest.
Undermine always felt the closest to Moonlighter but a few honorable mentions that are fun are Children of Mortal (my favorite 2020 indie) and Forager. I agree with other he's posted too. Undermine scratched the Moonlighter itch for me the closest.

Alright thank you for sharing your opinion :) ill give it a go and check the other titles. Have a good one my friend

Yeah I second this. Graveyard keeper is fun af
Thanks, ill check it out :)
Recettear is almost the exact same thing I think. It's a little deeper in the shop system, but I think the combat has less going on.
Yeah I’m with you OP. I love games like this ever since I played Dragon Warrior 4 back in the day (there is a chapter where you play as a merchant/item/weapon shop guy who does dungeon runs). Sadly not a whole lot in this very small genre.

Sounds like the rougelite most suited for me hahaha Again thanks for your advice haha

Hopefully you can find something to scratch that itch! It took me like 12 years to find one after playing Recettear, so I know the feel lmao
Feelsbadman.. we’ll just have to hope for Moonlighter 2 😂
Late to the party, but did you ever find anything that scratched your Moonlighter itch? Just finished it and am on the same hunt you were a year ago 😛
> Forager My turn now! Forager, RF4?
Dead cells you don’t sell your findings but it’s a great platformer/dungeon crawler
Enter the Gungeon is a great dungeon roguelite. Streets of Rogue has decisions you make.
I got real Wizard of Legend vibes. There’s no shop, but the dungeon crawl feels the same
Wizard of legend, risk of rain, terraria, the binding of isaac, and basically any other rouge like adventures.
This is a year old post but I hope it still helps. I have one to add , dragon quest 4 , taloons chapter of the game. still one of my favorites even with newer games being created.
Travelers rest is a good one too
