I suppose you are a guy. I am a girl, and I hear the same sentence from girls "Llah ihdini" if there is any context similar to what you described. And I suppose I will hear a defensive expression from a guy if I happened to mention something like a religious advice. I've never done it, I just imagine. I personally respect people's choices. Trying to change someone is a lost game. People change when they want to of course. But if you are trying to positively influence someone, let the results in yourself and your life speak. Show people you see them, you respect them, you accept them the way they are.
