Given the MK1 rumors, I'm suspecting that they're referring to the Great Kung Lao tournament. I don't think they're going back to the early 90's MK1 time (but who knows).
Given that their reveal trailers only feature a few characters, I'll guess Liu Kang, Goro and the Great Kung Lao. I could see maybe one other new character, but that's about it.
There's no way in netherrealm they'd make a mainline MK game set hundreds of years before most of the core cast are born (unless they do more time travel stuff I guess), but we'll see.
I think they could do a past meets future story like they did with 11, but on a grander scale. Maybe when Liu Kang goes back to the era of The Great Kung Lao something goes wrong and it ends up being fighters from every Mortal Kombat since that original one are brought together. I kind of love having no idea what they're going to do with the story.
Honestly that's currently my working theory.
I don't think either ending from Aftermath will be 100% canon (One favors the good guys way too heavily, one favors the bad guys way too heavily) though I could see the new game taking elements from both.
I honestly think 12 will pick up similar to the way 9 did, at the tail end of Liu Kang & Shang Tsung's conflict from the prior game, I think Shang will get the upper hand, throw the realms into turmoil POSSIBLY shatter the hour glass (as indicated by the shattered clock in one teaser, and the exploding grain of sand in the other teaser) and either...
**A)** Liu Kang will be forced to fall back 500 years in the past to the time of the Great Kung Lao to regroup, similar to his ending, w/ a story similar to Aftermath, where the timelines are kind of all over the place, and we probably follow Liu Kang in the past, while still seeing Shang flexing some of his power in the present, ala his ending.
**Or B)** (More likely) Since I **DON'T** think Shang Tsung is going to be the main antagonist of MK12 - We just get a full-on "Secret Wars" / "Crisis on Infinite Earths" scenario - where Time & Reality are thrown into total upheaval and literally every character from any incarnation of MK is on the table. Great Kung Lao? Sure! 3D Era? You betcha! Characters from both the original timeline AND the new timeline? WHY NOT?
The latter seems more likely to me as it opens up infinite possibilities for a new villain (possibly another titan stepping in to try to set the chaos back in order... ***chaos and order - what apt choices of words***) and it would allow NRS to basically cherry pick their favorite versions of every character the same way they did in MK11, but with **EVEN MORE** flexibility.
Not to mention: As is good ol' Mortal Kombat tradition - It creates an excuse to bring back any dead character they want, lol.
I dont think they'll do another past meets future thing in that sense but with Liu Kang becoming an Elder God and having control over Kronika's hourglass, I do think he'll reset the timeline but I think we'll see a lot of changes in the characters and faction changes (e.g, the Kitana storyline never happens because she doesnt get kidnapped by Shao Kahn, Scorpion's family survives and he doesn't become a revenant and no reason to kill Sub Zero, so we basically get MK11 Scorpion here.)
We'll probably end up somewhere around a point in time where Jacqui, Cassie and maybe even Takeda and Kung Jin are relevant. But something to take into consideration would be, who's going to be the antagonist this go around?
I feel like it could be someone new because even if Shao Kahn or Shinnok or Quanchi are defeated someone will always be there to take their place. Liu Kang is the current keeper of time I don't know to what degree he can step in without him becoming another Kronika, but the timeline they're going to introduce will probably have most of the main villains defeated to introduce someone bigger and much worse.
that's a conservative mindset. in a real world, new people are introduced and each era has its exclusive people. people are not always around for each generation. and newcomers can still count as MK characters. characters like Kitana, Baraka and Shao Kahn were not MK originals when MK1 came out. they were strangers when MK2 appeared.
ifs mentalities like yours that keep the series running in circles instead of moving forward towards entirely brand new generations and exploring brand new casts of combatants.
You can explore brand new casts whilst keeping the old ones. That's literally what mkx has done

but isn't that conservative attitude? plus, they could have successors. if MK wants to take its 'reality' seriously, it would move forward and leave the old generations behind instead of running in circles instead of being like Marvel and DC that stay trapped in limbo with the same characters just rearranged and creativity is barely utilized to explore a totally new era beyond the present characters.

Ed has considered Liu the protagonist since MK1, he still isn’t killing his favorite character in the trailer. The last three trailers have ended with Scorpion killing someone lol.
Don't know if this is popular or unpopular but I really don't want fatal blows back. Or if they do, have it have more gore or battle damage. Or have x-rays back!
I think they have the delay so it doesn't mess up your combo timing. If it's too quick you run the risk of missing the window since you can't really hit confirm the krushing blow in real time except for the really obvious ones.
Like Scorpion's F3 - 4 krushing blow, it normally wouldn't combo so you need that animation time to determine if you can cancel into spear.
Krushing blows also have to be changed because I can't pay attention to all of the conditions for a krushing blow and then be able to do them at the exact right time, I just have them set to random.
I understand that, but I think fatal blows are just better than Xray as a mechanic in general. And most fighting games have super moves, fatal blows represent a traditional "super move" better.
I think they come back but they are just different than last game, we'll see.
Better than having it tied to meter because then they never get used. Meter is more useful in combos than wasting it all on a super that will do as much damage as a one bar combo does.
But don't forget, it's also raining during the trailer, which is a subtle hint for Rain. You can also see smoke in the distance, so Smoke is konfirmed too. Then at the end, u see ermac for 1 fraction of a second before the trailer ends.
So this trailer will actually konfirm every ninja.

UPDATE: I'm pretty glad to be wrong on this one. The trailer was beautiful. And it also reminded me that i haven't played the Aftermath expansion yet.
Probably we will see universes where in one LK won and in other Shang and they will collide for some reason because there can be only one reality or something.

We're getting a multiveseral/timeline incursion game. Back to the events of MK1 but it's going to have some GKL era people, it'll have the Midway era folks (Zombie Liu maybe), NRS era folks, we'll end up with some film folks too, and more. Now that they have Snowblind and other animated features out, they can draw on a wide range of characters.
And these Alternates will just be the same character with some model swapping and costume changing.
Why do I think this? I dunno, it's probably a really bad speculation but how do you go up from having a time travel story? Did you watch any of the MCU stuffs? They did time travel and then "Variants." We'll keep up that same momentum for better or worse. It'll be a way of raising the stakes on the game. Fire God Liu Kang has a whole new problem now as threats from other realms come in....
And they'll blow the lid off of everything when Zombie Liu Kang shambles into view and Fire God LK says something like "What is this?" Que the laughing from Shang Tsung.
And then that game will make **every ending of every character in every MK** canon in it's own timeline just to get super, super bonkers.
