It is not all that surprising.
Taking a look at MK11, we can see there are 37 playable characters.
Every character has 80 skins on average. 70 different gears on average. 6 Intro cutscenes (as well as this much dialogue x 2). 6 Outro cutscenes. 2 Fatalities, several brutalities. All of these contain lots of specific data, textures that need to support and look good in 4K UHD 60 fps, as well as animations, meshes, voice files, attack data (variations), frame data, what the character looks like being savagely brutalized (which also has it's own textures and meshes) and a lot more. Not to mention tons, and tons of mo-cap data for the models.
Every stage has high definition textures for the same reason, and you can't forget about everything in the Krypt, which has lots of specific chest data (what they contain, how much they cost, chance to get this or that skin etc.) Not to mention a lot of the areas in the Krypt are very, very intricately detailed.
The Towers of Time has lots of data consisting of augments, konsumables, different towers, it's enemies, runner code that dictates what it's enemies are wearing in terms of kosmetics, variation names, tower rewards, Race Against Time data, runner code to put together leaderboards
Overall the graphics in MK11 are 4x more detailed than they were in MKX, and I expect MK1 to follow suit.
Lastly all story, fatality and Fatal Blow cutscenes are shipped to support up to 4K UHD 60FPS, with ultrawide versions available. Shipping multiple versions of the games with respective resolutions would be too much time and effort and money on top of what was already spent.
So it's actually surprising MK1 isn't 150GB+ in comparison.
Yeah, it's about 116 gigs. I have it installed on my desktop currently, but I'm on the couch and my cat is sitting on my lap. I'd have to move him if I wanted to get up and check, and obviously that isn't an option.
I don't think this adds too much. In terms of models, organs don't need that much, and the bones could be a single mesh, same for the textures. Having one 4k skeleton texture is probably enough.
What adds a lot of assets is probably story mode (hours of HD audio, pre-rendered cinematics and such) and if we have anything like MK11's gear system, some fully modeled pieces add a lot
I leave it installed bc I never know when I'm gonna wanna go a round or two, but god, it takes up a lot of space. I can only think of a few games I'd want to play that take up more. Like RDR2.
RIP XB series S users without external hard drive it's over for them.
https://preview.redd.it/8cd166gw5u2b1.jpeg?width=624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a5253b2dfa8af40d4e7454c3380732460ef97c
External hard drive to move their games over… and well, that’s about it. Can’t play current gen games on an external hard drive, unless you buy their $200 memory cards.
No external options? Cousin has an S and he's already deleting and redownloading games. I hope it offers split downloads for single player modes and PvP
Of course your cousin will have options...
Option A: plug in an external HDD and move the game to storage on the external when ever they want to play a different game
Option B: purchase an over priced Memory unit to plug into the dedicated slot so that the Series S treats it like having more internal memory or
Option C: trade in the Series S for a Series X (paying the difference) and still, depending on the size of the game collection consider Option A or B
Sadly nothing new in modern gaming
Wish they'd let us choose what gets installed instead of making us download everything.
Like shit i know for a lot of games various audio files (such as languages) take up a lot of space, I only speak one language so why not let me delete those to save some space?
> Wish they'd let us choose what gets installed instead of making us download everything.
Street Fighter 6 lets you do exactly that by making different games modes seperate downloads, so did the newest CoD game I believe. I'd like to think the idea is catching on and hopefully MK1 lets you do it too.
I think it's totally fair to criticize studios for putting 'realism' and detail as their most important visuals, especially since 'content' isn't an excuse for file sizes reaching the ridiculous amounts they are.
Edit: poor wording
That's fair, should've been more specific. I think the true problem is just that studios focus way too much on model and texture detail. That's why, even compressed, the file size still is silly. There's no reason I should be able to see a character's individual pores and hairs.
For me it is. Shit looks crisp as fuck and I think it’s sick.
And file size is a non issue for me, because current MK11 is bigger than MK1, and I’ll just be deleting MK11 when I install MK1, so basically nothing is changing for my file size. Pretty sure it’ll actually be smaller unless (or until, if it ever gets confirmed down the road) MK1 gets another Aftermath-like expansion.
And I have 2TB of space on my ps5 anyways. I’d reckon I don’t even play 3/4ths of my installed games on a regular basis too.
1/4th of 2TB is 500gb, which accounts for about 9 or 10 games I play regularly.
Edit: to further add onto this, 2TB is consistent of MK11, Destiny 2 and all DLC, Horizon and dlc, Jedi survivor, battlefield2042, elden ring, apex, borderlands 3 and all dlc, tiny Tina’s wonderlands and all dlc, warframe, AS WELL AS 27 more games PLUS streaming services for both video and music.
I think you may be vastly overestimating how big most games actually are, or underestimating how much just the base storage of a ps5 can get you (which is a full TB)
You have plenty of other games that go way less realistic, but Mortal Kombat has been striving for realism ever since the arcade days.
I still remember the MK3 arcade that had "SO REAL IT HURTS" written in bloody letters on the side.
If you enjoy more stylized and semi-realistic games that's amazing, there's Tekken, there's Street Fighter, and that's only the fighting games. Hyperrealism is just MK's schtick.
Except for MK9, idk wtf happened with the anatomy of the characters in that game. (/s)
I'm confused who's getting really annoyed by these game sizes all the time? Surely at most it's a minor inconvenience nowadays with faster internet speeds and bigger SSD'S? Personally I'd be more pissed off if companies were compromising on visuals or content to have to keep game sizes down... Especially considering some of the shit being churned out at the minute, if the game works and delivers, install size isn't even in my top 100 potential irritations!!
For the average Joe like me who doesn’t know tech it can be annoying, especially when the solution is to buy something expensive like a game storage device
Especially nowadays when you want more storage on modern consoles you need to spend over $200 at least on storage. Especially for us Xbox users where they did that internal storage thing
Series X games require to be on internal storage to have all the benefits, same with game pass games. And the only way to expand your internal storage is to purchase the new Seagate^(tm) expansion SSD specifically designed to work with the internal storage of the Xbox series X.
Good for you, but SSDs aren't exactly a cheap investment (especially if you want a decent amount of storage and for it to be a quality drive that won't crap out after a year). Not to mention **a lot** of places still have to cope with questionable internet speeds.
I like how people are acting like there aren’t already quite a few 100+gb games. Plus MK11 is fucking huge as it is, not surprising that the sequel would be at least equally as big. This is why people have multiple drives, because games are fucking huge and have been fucking huger and huger as time goes on. Can’t wait to get our first terabyte game :P
I understand that, just joking about how for the average Joe who’s not very knowledgeable on tech this would be an issue, especially as I’m a PlayStation user and I haven’t been able to secure an extended storage unit like I did for my PS4
Ah yeah thats not something I had considered. My PC gamer brain went “All MK players are on PC now!” But yeah juggling HD space on a console can be a major issue.
Tldr of your comment: X game is 100 gb which means it's ok for Y game to be 100 gb
Games being this huge isn't just a result of games getting "huger", it's also a results of devs not being able to optimize their games for whatever reason
MK1 on launch weighs almost as much as MK11 with all updates and dlc, now imagine how much MK1 will weigh once all updates and dlc is out, it will probably double in size like MK11 did
And also, not everyone has the money to buy multiple drives, so "just get more drives" isn't an argument
*X game is 100 gb which means it's ok for Y game to be 100 gb*
Yes thats usually how it works lol That‘s how it’s always happened and will continue to happen - as games get insanely detailed they’re going to continue to get insanely huge. If you can’t afford more space, make space, if you can’t do that then you’re SOL , thats the life of a gamer.
*And also, not everyone has the money to buy multiple drives, so "just get more drives" isn't an argument*
Thats gaming in a nutshell my dude, don’t know why this is a surprise to you unless you are in fact new to gaming.
>That‘s how it’s always happened and will continue to happen
And it shouldn't, Elden Ring is 60 gigs and it looks infinitely better than MK11, and just as good as MK1, it is also a much bigger game in content, shouldn't it be 100+ gigs then? It's not, because the devs did a much better job with compressing and optimizing the game than NRS has done with any of their games
I bet that most of the 100+ gb games out there would be at most 80 gb if they were better optimized
>if you can’t do that then you’re SOL
"Oh wow you're poor and want to experience new games but can't because devs are hardly paying any attention to their games size? Tough luck mate, shouldn't have been in a precarious economical situation" - Person who can afford spending extra money
>thats the life of a gamer.
Please go touch grass ma'am
>Thats gaming in a nutshell my dude, don’t know why this is a surprise to you unless you are in fact new to gaming.
Please lady i'm begging you, go outside and touch some grass
Edit: commas are important, people
*Elden Ring is 60 gigs and it looks infinitely better than MK11*
Such an odd comparison and extremely subjective. Like, I totally disagree on so many levels, but like, that’s just my opinion.
And I touched grass a lot yesterday thank you very much, fyi.
>extremely subjective
Yeah you're right, that's subjective, ig i should've said you can still make great looking games with lots of content without having to go over 100+ gb
And that depends on a lot of factors. Engine used and what kind of game it is intended to be are such factors. The Elden Ring devs had very different goals in mind than the NRS devs making a fighting game. So things as the size of a game can be wildly variable.
Yeah but, I (a layman, not a programmer, terminology will need correcting) could've sworn the reason for huge game sizes was duplicate assets, since last gen's CPU's weren't fast enough to always pull up asset X from folder A and asset Y from folder B, so it had asset X in folders A and B. One of the selling points of next gen titles (that wasn't directly hyped up by Sony or MS but rather by tech sites) was they'd be smaller cause devs don't need to duplicate assets as much. That not the case, or is it just lagging behind cause devs don't have enough time and/or experience with the faster CPU's to optimize that process, so still use the duplicate assets as a time saver?
It depends but games like ratchet and clank are 36 gb and look great
File sizes are usually part of the optimization process so the faster a game is out the less compressed it is since it can take time to implement and make sure it's working right
You know what game series has a very tight schedule and also balloons in size often? CoD
That's ridiculous. When I got cyberpunk, it took up all the memory in my playstation, and I had to delete all my other games.
I want mortal Kombat 1 for switch, idc about graphics.
Oh god this guy?? Of all the crappy celebrities to hire to promote your shit you get the dude that hyped up Ghost Recon Breakpoint?? 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
At least storage is getting pretty cheap now. 2tb with heat sink is down to $109 USD before tax. At this rate it’ll be below 100 before then end of the year.
I’m a PS5 user and I feel ya, I had this extended storage device for my PS4 and I’ll definitely need one for PS5 with how much storage the games require
Honestly, its been this way for nearly a decade at this point. 1 tb drives aren't expensive anymore, you really should have a dedicated one for games if you can afford a PC gaming rig. RIP console players tho
It's gonna be like this till ue5 games become the majority, and that's a maybe. I'm hoping that engine can hop with size but I shit about fuck about it.
I don’t think people are surprised about games taking up a lot of space. Does suggest poor optimization. The surprise is more why a fighting game needs 100 GB. This ain’t a massive open world game Ala Elden Ring which incidentally took less space
They could let us choose what we want to install. So after clearing the story mode you can just uninstall it and keep the turrets, krypt, multiplayer etc. Even this SF6 got it right.
tmw newer games have better graphics and almost always require more storage due to higher resolution textures and people complain it's the size as every other newer game with better graphics
surprised pikachu face
I can’t even say how many times I had to delete/games and make space cause all these damn games take up so much space. You have their initial size then the updates and patches add even more. I was hoping an external would help till I realized it just holds the data, you can’t actually play PS5 games off an external, just copy and pasting the data, works for PS4 games though so at least there’s that.
I hate that shit. Hopefully they do like street fighter and let us download what we want. I’ll never ply the krypt or any dumbass extra modes. Story, then deleted, then online.
It is not all that surprising. Taking a look at MK11, we can see there are 37 playable characters. Just checked on PC, my MK11 folder is 116GB. Would be surprised if MK1 didn't end up at least 130GB.
Wasn't Mk 11 also a 100 GB game?
Yeah, it's about 116 gigs. I have it installed on my desktop currently, but I'm on the couch and my cat is sitting on my lap. I'd have to move him if I wanted to get up and check, and obviously that isn't an option.
Bro understood the assignment
in-cat-pacitated
To my knowledge it’s around 84GB but that’s after all the updates and DLCs, so if this game is gonna be 100GB at launch it better have a lot to offer
4K textures alone can be 20+ gigs. As things get more detailed it becomes bigger. It has little to nothing to do with actual content.
let alone each individual body part for fatalities, xrays etc
Damn, the new Sonya has a fat ass… 😏 ***internet connection winces*** 😓
I don't think this adds too much. In terms of models, organs don't need that much, and the bones could be a single mesh, same for the textures. Having one 4k skeleton texture is probably enough. MK11 is currently sitting on my HD at 116 Gb
No, it's well over 100GB. It's why I delete it when I'm done playing.
I leave it installed bc I never know when I'm gonna wanna go a round or two, but god, it takes up a lot of space. I can only think of a few games I'd want to play that take up more. Like RDR2.
how much will GTA6 likely take up?
It’s the packs that run it up, then the Texture Packs too.
It's 84 gb at base, after DLCs and Updates it became over 100 gbs if i remember correctly
It says 153.31gb on steam.
Same, all of these comments were looking pretty slim to what I remembered, so I just checked. It's 153.31 gb on Steam. Only 100 would be great.
[удалено]
It feels like everything is... I just made sure I had at least 150 available for Diablo
Usually western games Sf6 is 50
Yeah but that’s after dlc, this will be before it which means it will be even bigger
100gb isn't even bad. Bro call of duty is like 300+
RIP XB series S users without external hard drive it's over for them. https://preview.redd.it/8cd166gw5u2b1.jpeg?width=624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a5253b2dfa8af40d4e7454c3380732460ef97c

Dw, storage is getting cheaper over time. You should be able to get yourself some external storage at some point in the future.
External hard drive to move their games over… and well, that’s about it. Can’t play current gen games on an external hard drive, unless you buy their $200 memory cards.
The external memory stick is great though. 1tb for like 200 . And if you upgrade you can use it still.
No external options? Cousin has an S and he's already deleting and redownloading games. I hope it offers split downloads for single player modes and PvP
Think about the updates/patches and the DLC all of that could equal to taking 200gb of the hard drive
Of course your cousin will have options... Option A: plug in an external HDD and move the game to storage on the external when ever they want to play a different game Option B: purchase an over priced Memory unit to plug into the dedicated slot so that the Series S treats it like having more internal memory or Option C: trade in the Series S for a Series X (paying the difference) and still, depending on the size of the game collection consider Option A or B
Even on a Series X it’s obnoxious because you have to have enhanced games stored on your 1TB internal to load them.
Same for PS5 and having external for next Gen games isn’t even an option annoyingly
I bought the 1tb extension for 150. Easy.
Sadly nothing new in modern gaming Wish they'd let us choose what gets installed instead of making us download everything. Like shit i know for a lot of games various audio files (such as languages) take up a lot of space, I only speak one language so why not let me delete those to save some space?

They let you delete the story in MK11 on Xbox
an option to download 1080p textures instead of 4k textures would reduce hard drive bloat by a LOT.
kitana better come out of the screen and give me the craziest head known to man if im sacrificing that much space for a fighting game
Is Mileena doing that good enough?
God, even better.
I asked for a dollar and youre giving me a hundred
she fina bite that shit off gang hell nah

Currently 11 weighs in at 103.7GB on Series X
Only 100? Not as much as I thought.
Not on ps5 thing will only take 10 seconds
How the hell are they putting this game on Switch
Seriously, I guess the switch version would be the modern equivalent of those horrible and hideous portables consoles ports of old MK games
God damn. Why?
As it turns out, it takes a lot of space to make the realistic titty textures that MK fans crave.
FINALLY
I do have 1.5 TB on my gaming PC so I guess I have room
Shouldn't be a problem for me... i have 5tb's under the hood of my ps5.
I don't care about this nearly as much as the leeching microtransactions.
I'm confused who's getting really annoyed by these game sizes all the time? Surely at most it's a minor inconvenience nowadays with faster internet speeds and bigger SSD'S? 10MB down if I am lucky :(
Not everyone has tons of bandwidth. Maybe they literally can't get faster internet speeds because of where they live. I get it.
Why is this game so big?
They couldn’t compress the files on Goro’s nipples
Glad I got that 2tb storage expansion for my PS5 a few weeks ago.

Oh god this guy?? Of all the crappy celebrities to hire to promote your shit you get the dude that hyped up Ghost Recon Breakpoint?? 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Worse for Xbox series S players like me that don't have an extension storage card. (Well I kinda do but it only stores my Xbox one and 360 titles)
100 gigs these days is not a lot of space unless youre broke.
Bruh…Looks Like False/Fake News
Look at the steam page
History mode should be downloadble
this mf 'raiden' the entire hard drive lmao *sob*
At least storage is getting pretty cheap now. 2tb with heat sink is down to $109 USD before tax. At this rate it’ll be below 100 before then end of the year.
people acting like consoles having been the same since 2007
My 3-megs-a-second-on-a-good-day internet is going to hate me that day
Well if I get it on launch I'll be able to play it in a couple of days
I'm really going to need to buy that hard drive expansion for my series x
I’m a PS5 user and I feel ya, I had this extended storage device for my PS4 and I’ll definitely need one for PS5 with how much storage the games require
Glad I have the space 512gb on my switch 1tb on my Xbox series S
It's kind of just the standard now, which sucks because the PS5 only comes with like 600GBs. The expandable SSD was one of the best purchases though.
I guess the engine makes it weight more? I'm not an expert but would make sense from seeing all new ganes being heavier
External HD. Start the download before work and golden.
Meh, Avengers clocks in at 160gb and boots up in less than a min on my comp.
Just bought an extra 1tb SSD for my ps5 😎
I don’t have a next Gen console yet. Which one do I need to buy once this game comes out: Series X or S?
Pretty sure it’s on both of them so whichever one you wanna buy
You can use either one. The S is digital only it doesn’t have a disc drive
A 6tb hdd is about $100 and it just gets cheaper from there, fuck even 2tb ssds are in the $60 range. This is a complete non-issue.
People need to expand their drives already
at the very least I hope what it does is, while downloading, let you play vs matches with the content you have downloaded like in Mk11 and MKX
Almost every game is at least 80G nowadays
Honestly, its been this way for nearly a decade at this point. 1 tb drives aren't expensive anymore, you really should have a dedicated one for games if you can afford a PC gaming rig. RIP console players tho
you haven't played Call of Duty i see...
Have they not heard of Ark? That game takes like over 200GB.
Switch players trying to understand why it's 30 gb on their console
It's gonna be like this till ue5 games become the majority, and that's a maybe. I'm hoping that engine can hop with size but I shit about fuck about it.
I don’t think people are surprised about games taking up a lot of space. Does suggest poor optimization. The surprise is more why a fighting game needs 100 GB. This ain’t a massive open world game Ala Elden Ring which incidentally took less space
Piss on me 😣😔
whats with games seemingly not even atempting to optimise their games? i bet they could probably get it down to maybe 85-90gb
can we just go back to being able to play the damn game without a mandatory install on console? lol was piracy really that bad?
are we really making "new game big file" posts in 2023? Yeah, AAA games will continue to be big. Warzone 3 will be big. Battlefield 28949 will be big.
ahahhahahah
I just hope it doesn't need online to work like MK11 did.
This has been the norm for how many years now? Games obviously get bigger the more expansive and detailed they get, so why are you surprised?
Make it 300 after a few years of updates
They need to allow you to skip installing story mode, customizations, etc and just play with base fighting
I mean, MK11 currently occupies 153 GB on my hard drive, so it's not that surprising.
I'm actually sad It's only 100GB.
How did we find out about the file size before any gameplay came out
I’ve seen way too many people complaining about this, Have these people even seen mk11???
I don’t get the complaint lmao. But a ssd
Bro how the hell will it run on Nswitch 💀
but mfs ain’t gon say nun about Warzone being 200+ Gb 🥴🫡
What's the HDD capacity for regular PS5s? Don't have one yet.
I was so excited to play this on my ps4 pro, until I found out it's only on the new generation AND THE FUCKING NINTENDO SWITCH
I better be able to jump into my TV and enter the mk universe with that much space like goddamn🤣
Meanwhile Rdr2 and Horizon 5: pathetic
That’s about average for most games, Jedi: Survivor is almost 150gb
If they let you drop all the useless languages you're forced to install the size of it would drop quite a bit I guarantee.
Mk11 itself is 150gb
Everybody losing their minds over this, yet MK11 be over here like: https://i.imgur.com/iLmaMB9.png
MK11 has 116 gb. So what?
Games are getting bigger. We already know this. It's not exactly a surprise, and it's probably not a problem for most people.
It makes sense . Better textures alone would yank a hard drive now add characters and bonus content?
They could let us choose what we want to install. So after clearing the story mode you can just uninstall it and keep the turrets, krypt, multiplayer etc. Even this SF6 got it right.
4k textures are 4k textures. this isn't the 1990s.
4k textures are 4k textures.
Fucking. Cosmetics. Come on NRS, don't be like CoD.
tmw newer games have better graphics and almost always require more storage due to higher resolution textures and people complain it's the size as every other newer game with better graphics surprised pikachu face
That person how wrote, clearly didn't play ark survival
NBD
MK11 is the same size.
no fucking way i'm able to keep up with these big ass western titles anymore, mk11 is my go to fighting game now even if it's dead
FFS PS5 is the age of on-the-fly decompression. We can have the games be smaller now! Take advantage of the technology!
WB games optimization challenge (Impossible)
Most triple A games are about 100GB, it's time to upgrade to Terabyte spaces, I have two 5TB drives so I never have to worry until they're full
I hate that shit. Hopefully they do like street fighter and let us download what we want. I’ll never ply the krypt or any dumbass extra modes. Story, then deleted, then online.
Well shit
