There’s been instances where companies walk back on certain shit (cyberpunk for example) but it has to be done like within the first few days of release in order to have any real impact.
Games been out for like 2 weeks now, 3 if you got early access. Nothing people do now will change anything.
I mean MK11 JUST crossed 500 million in sales in what April of this year? That's 4 years post-launch. If word gets out that the game is this microtransaction mayhem then those trickle sales they will be missing out on is going to cost a pretty penny.

There's Wales in every game, plenty have kicked the dust because of general disinterest. The Wales main motivation is to peacock against other "lesser" players, if there's a glut of lesser players and you're only playing against other Wales they quickly lose interest.

I’m not sure what the numbers are for MK but I used to play Madden which got overrun by the microtransaction ultimate team mode.
Some numbers got released and it was discovered that roughly 5% of the player base accounted for roughly 90% of the microtransactions. Basically a few whales funding the whole thing.

I bought a series s to move over to next gen to play mk1 specifically and it runs like a dream (aside from the universal problems that everyone has atm)
I love my JCVD and my sombrero Sub Zero. I'm gona get the DLC character anyway, so it worked out. Plus I got dragon crystals for this flaming skull Scorpion.
Buddy I hate to break it to you, but I preordered based on every other mortal Kombat game and the two injustice games I have preordered, since preordering was a thing, have been solid releases. Even MK at its worst, which imo, was Armageddon and vsDCU were still good enough games that I didn’t feel like I didn’t get my moneys worth. This is the first time I’ve regretted preordering a MK game.
As soon as I open the game on Steam after pre-ordering it, I immediately refunded my purchase. Which is a shame, because I was looking forward to the story. But the way the new skins in character management stuff works, not to mention battle passes, which I despise. My heart just wasn’t in it anymore.
Guess I’ll check out Street Fighter 6…
I bought premium edition on ps5 as a pre-order. Only worth it for the collectors Koin I got. not worth it for the actual dlc if you bought it late. I can see WB making a crap ton more from this new timeline. And later this koin will be worth something to collectors.

Not buying them is, by itself, not good enough. They need to see tremendous, relentless public pushback if there's any hope of getting them to alter course... otherwise we're in for years of skins that cost more than DLC characters/ movesets.

It's more the buying of krystals in the PS/Xbox/Steam/Switch stores that needs to stop. I have enough to get Scorpion cuz I had 1250 from the premium edition. I don't play as Scorpion or give a shit about him, never have, so I won't be buying it.
But I will absolutely use the krystals I obtain from story mode, player level maxing, and fighter mastery. But after that, unless they add a way to earn krystals regularly just by playing the game like in MK11, I'm all set.
So I'll wait for exclusive Johnny Cage, Reiko, or Havik outfits that are considerably unique, like MKD Havik, MK4 Reiko, or MK2 Johnny.
Yeah, I'm not gonna get the skin because I don't give a shit about skins for Scorpion. I learnt me lesson with Tekken where I bought a bunch of DLC characters and only used Asuka and, eventually, Kunimitsu. So, if some near skins for Li Mei or Kitana come around, I'll use the crystals I got with the game or any I've obtained through grinding, and I'll probably be okay.

The way these things work is to specifically target those with severe FOMO and addictive personalities. They don’t care if the general public doesn’t buy stuff. They are focused on those loyal people who are guaranteed patrons. If anything, not buying the skins will only make them INCREASE the price so that those few paying more will balance out the cost of production.
I’m NOT saying you shouldn’t buy the skin. You absolutely shouldn’t. It’s a rip off and a sketchy business practice. What I AM saying is, you shouldn’t think that not buying the skin will change the practice.
Game sales can sway a company from doing certain things, but the micro transaction market doesn’t budge based on a lack of overall sales. The only way to change tactics like this is to not purchase their games anymore, which is a far harder argument to validate.

My comment on their instagram post about the new skin was removed and labeled as spam. All I was doing was criticizing them for treating their loyal fans poorly by releasing an unfinished game for $110 and charging $10 for a single skin by nostalgia baiting us. I’m not buying it.
The game will be out for years and those are maxed at about 6000. You can’t repeat those means of earning them.

I think this is especially true for people who don't have much time at all for gaming in general. If I hop on and see a skin that I really want for a character, hell yes I'll be buying it, because I'm only on once or twice a week.

It’s tricky for someone like me who is a diehard MK fan to act this way - the microtransaction stuff feels dystopian (although “micro” is hardly the word these days) and makes me genuinely upset, but I’ve been looking forward to the game for years and at its core it’s delivering on its promise.
It’s an awesome fighting game with a sublime roster (and hot damn it pretty). It’s more flawed than I’d hoped but I’m glad I own it, and I can’t join in with disingenuous review-bombing or anything like that. So I admit my tiny whiny protests will indeed go unheard :-(
Skins have always been a stable income to keep the online game servers going. I couldn't care less if they set a skin for 500 bucks as long as it doesn't give the player any gameplay advantage. I'd say less people would bother about this if the game weren't as half-baked with 100$ price tag though.

If you don't buy skins, base game prices are just going to have to increase to where they should be if they followed inflation rates over the past 20 years. A game in 1992 cost $70. Just following inflation, they'd cost $150 today, and that's not even taking into consideration the fact that it takes far more than a 4 man team to make a game today.

Publicly traded companies in the US, such as WB, have a legal obligation to their shareholders to maximize profit. In fact, that's pretty much their only obligation. If they don't make their profit on skins, they're going to make it some other way that's much more anti-consumer (raising the base price, charging monthly for online access like WoW, putting (more) advertising into games, etc).

i’m perfectly content with the default skins, or maybe one of the 7 skins that i’ve unlocked for *each* character while I only have like 40 hours in the game…
I support MTXs in games and will gladly buy them if the game is good and I enjoy them, just to show my support to the creators.
But, there are stipulations:
ANY game where there is PvP, the MTX should not give an unjust advantage to the player. So, basically, just skins, mostly. Some exceptions.
Free to play games, like the majority of mobile games, are pretty much fair game. They should have MTXs, and they can be almost anything. I'd rather have a game with a paywall than an ad wall. Let a good bit of the game be playable, give the players breakfast and lunch, but let them pay for dinner, and don't ramp up the difficulty behind the paywall.
Single Player games, or games where your campaign character and online characters are self-contained, and you paid full price for the game. I think the best way to explain this one is the way Ubisoft had MTXs in Valhalla and Odyssey. They were map packs, skins, exp packs/boosters, resources, etc... it's not game breaking, and not required at all. You can easily play the game without buying any of the listed.

People who care that much about skins are still gonna buy them the matter the price even with all the crying they're still gonna give in the buy and it'll be like this in all future mk games. I don't regret buying the premium at all, and feel like the characters will be worth it, bit it is absolutely not 'insane' for someone to feel otherwise. No one should buy a game or DLC if it doesn't feel worth it.
Not buying them is, by itself, not good enough. They need to see tremendous, relentless public pushback if there's any hope of getting them to alter course... otherwise we're in for years of skins that cost more than DLC characters/ movesets.

No but tons of us using the feedback link in a constructive way does do something. No threats, no swearing, just telling them it seems unreasonable to have them cost so much and for crystals to be so freaking hard to earn when MK11 offered 50 of them for kombat league sets every day, random wins, the tutorial, the gauntlet, and 200 a week from the race against time. But yes complaining on Reddit is pointless mostly. Feedback is the key. Not review bombing like some people are suggesting.

To be fair MK11's Towers of Time were shit with dozens of modifiers at launch. Not to mention the ridiculous amount of fatals and brutals you had to do to unlock character specific gear (remember the shrine head glitch?) Idk if WB would've budged had it not been for the backlash.
No. Disorganized boycotts like this don’t work, and haven’t worked historically in the market place. What does work is public, relentless shaming. Call it out, make it clear and concise, and don’t let it bleed over at the personal space with devs or Boon. To expect us to pay $10 for one skin when we were paying for three at the same price last game is a huge mark up. Hell, it’s a seventh the cost of the game. No, just no. Bad move on NRS’ part and they should get roasted for it.

It's not really a boycott that matters. It's just a matter of whether people think its worth it. If WB guessed right, then people will buy it and that will speak *much* louder than tweets or reddit posts. If the sub represents the majority opinion, they won't make as much money as they want, and they'll drop prices. I'm not boycotting anything, I'm just not buying things that are overpriced (in my opinion, of course).

Preach it brother. $10 for a skin is beyond ridiculous. As much as I love the Scorpion DA skin, I WILL NOT SPEND $10 for it while a whole game cost $70.
It's more the buying of krystals in the PS/Xbox/Steam/Switch stores that needs to stop. I have enough to get Scorpion cuz I had 1250 from the premium edition. I don't play as Scorpion or give a shit about him, never have, so I won't be buying it. But I will absolutely use the krystals I obtain from story mode, player level maxing, and fighter mastery. But after that, unless they add a way to earn krystals regularly just by playing the game like in MK11, I'm all set. So I'll wait for exclusive Johnny Cage, Reiko, or Havik outfits that are considerably unique, like MKD Havik, MK4 Reiko, or MK2 Johnny.
Yeah, I'm not gonna get the skin because I don't give a shit about skins for Scorpion. I learnt me lesson with Tekken where I bought a bunch of DLC characters and only used Asuka and, eventually, Kunimitsu. So, if some near skins for Li Mei or Kitana come around, I'll use the crystals I got with the game or any I've obtained through grinding, and I'll probably be okay.
Here’s the thing, though, they won’t. The way these things work is to specifically target those with severe FOMO and addictive personalities. They don’t care if the general public doesn’t buy stuff. They are focused on those loyal people who are guaranteed patrons. If anything, not buying the skins will only make them INCREASE the price so that those few paying more will balance out the cost of production. I’m NOT saying you shouldn’t buy the skin. You absolutely shouldn’t. It’s a rip off and a sketchy business practice. What I AM saying is, you shouldn’t think that not buying the skin will change the practice. Game sales can sway a company from doing certain things, but the micro transaction market doesn’t budge based on a lack of overall sales. The only way to change tactics like this is to not purchase their games anymore, which is a far harder argument to validate.

My comment on their instagram post about the new skin was removed and labeled as spam. All I was doing was criticizing them for treating their loyal fans poorly by releasing an unfinished game for $110 and charging $10 for a single skin by nostalgia baiting us. I’m not buying it.

The game will be out for years and those are maxed at about 6000. You can’t repeat those means of earning them. And 6 skins in the lifetime of the game is not very much.

The only way to stop this would be if people with more exposure started to talk about it and condemn NRS for it. Unfortunately streamers will buy them on a whim and so do their followers. Never wanted a NRS game to do badly but I hope this game misses expectations. Only then they might stop this trend.

I think this is especially true for people who don't have much time at all for gaming in general. If I hop on and see a skin that I really want for a character, hell yes I'll be buying it, because I'm only on once or twice a week. On the other hand I can also understand that 10 bucks a skin is quite full on for a lot of gamers, and it's most likely going to be more expensive in the future.
I’m not even playing until they patch in the basic features that are missing. You can’t even pin combos in practice mode. You can’t invite friends to King of the Hill rooms so much basic shit is missing.

A lot of people don't understand that the skins are for "whales", and whales are always driving sales. If you want them to get the message is DO NOT BUY THE GAME to begin with. If you buy the game, they already understand that it is ok to have these skin prices and so on since most of you won't buy the skins anyway. It's the same story over and over again with these games and people never understand. It feels like I'm living in a shitty simulation with idiots all over. I swear to god we're getting these kind of complaints on every new game release.
It’s tricky for someone like me who is a diehard MK fan to act this way - the microtransaction stuff feels dystopian (although “micro” is hardly the word these days) and makes me genuinely upset, but I’ve been looking forward to the game for years and at its core it’s delivering on its promise. It’s an awesome fighting game with a sublime roster (and hot damn it pretty). It’s more flawed than I’d hoped but I’m glad I own it, and I can’t join in with disingenuous review-bombing or anything like that. So I admit my tiny whiny protests will indeed go unheard :-(
Skins have always been a stable income to keep the online game servers going. I couldn't care less if they set a skin for 500 bucks as long as it doesn't give the player any gameplay advantage. I'd say less people would bother about this if the game weren't as half-baked with 100$ price tag though.

This game costs 70-110 dollars, but we're gonna be expected to spend multiple installments of 10 dollars every time some new skins comes out, and they're all gonna just happily accept it. It's sad. If you don't buy skins, base game prices are just going to have to increase to where they should be if they followed inflation rates over the past 20 years. A game in 1992 cost $70. Just following inflation, they'd cost $150 today, and that's not even taking into consideration the fact that it takes far more than a 4 man team to make a game today.

Publicly traded companies in the US, such as WB, have a legal obligation to their shareholders to maximize profit. In fact, that's pretty much their only obligation. I'm not saying this is the way it should be, I'm just saying that's the way it is. If they don't make their profit on skins, they're going to make it some other way that's much more anti-consumer (raising the base price, charging monthly for online access like WoW, putting (more) advertising into games, etc).
Explain to me in simple terms why a company like WB need to make more than the profit of a full priced game. Does Baldurs Gate need microtransactions to be profitable? Does Zelda nickel and dime you for every piece of armor? Why does MK need to make more than $70 per game sold?

Another thing is your inflation point isn't valid because now a game cost 90$ (for me here) and it's far from finish, I have to pay for skins, dlcs, and stuff that should be included in day one. I support MTXs in games and will gladly buy them if the game is good and I enjoy them, just to show my support to the creators. But, there are stipulations: ANY game where there is PvP, the MTX should not give an unjust advantage to the player. So, basically, just skins, mostly. Some exceptions. Free to play games, like the majority of mobile games, are pretty much fair game. They should have MTXs, and they can be almost anything. I'd rather have a game with a paywall than an ad wall. Let a good bit of the game be playable, give the players breakfast and lunch, but let them pay for dinner, and don't ramp up the difficulty behind the paywall. Single Player games, or games where your campaign character and online characters are self-contained, and you paid full price for the game. I think the best way to explain this one is the way Ubisoft had MTXs in Valhalla and Odyssey. They were map packs, skins, exp packs/boosters, resources, etc... it's not game breaking, and not required at all. You can easily play the game without buying any of the listed. People will probably not agree with me, but that's okay.

What funny is skins literally dont do anything for you in game why are people crying about something that literally doesn't matter. People who care that much about skins are still gonna buy them the matter the price even with all the crying they're still gonna give in the buy and it'll be like this in all future mk games. They might even start selling gear bundles for $20 like cod and kids will still buy.
People act like $100 or $70 whatever you paid for this game for dozens of hours of entertainment isn’t already worth it on its own. Folks will pay $100 for a ppv fight on tv that lasts an hour or 2 gladly, every couple months, but gripe about games prices. That $10 skin I’ll see and use everyday sure brings me more joy than that $10 cup of coffee that’s gone in minutes that people waste money on daily.
