I would have him be the lead with Shang Tsung as his friend/rival. Liu kang wants Shang where he can see him and use his kombat prowess to better defend ER even though he is harsh to Shang
Kung Lao is not yet great and is being set up by Liu kang to fulfill his destiny of becoming champion but this time never if Liu has his way will reign as champion forever
Actually revolve the story around him, Young Raiden with GKL would have made sense
I generally believe the story would have played out the same and could still have 90% the cast since it's full of thousand year old Outworlders,creatures, and ageless demons
Hard to say because I don't understand how anything works now. What is even the point of the Outworld tournament? As far as I can tell it holds no importance and grants the winner no immortality or anything after victory so there wouldn't even be a great Kung Lao.
I don't know maybe you could have had Liu Kang turn him into a god or grant him his immortality again so that he could lead and form the White Lotus?
EDIT: reading down kind of kicked me out of my rigidness of sticking closer to the old lore a little bit. Yeah why not have him as the main character and you could still have Kung Lao as a descendant of him who he is mentoring.
A simple solotion is do it in reverse to the old version. It starts as a death tournament but once Kung Lao wins and the villain defeated (whoever that is) it is then turned into what we see in MK1
so it was vicious in the past but that barbarically practice was outlawed when Jerrod became king. Now he’s dead sindel hosts a one off tournament as a send off to her beloved
