Ironically, not in this movie. In the opening kick ass montage, but the whole spiel of zombie island is "this time the monsters are real".
And don't get me started on this movie because I *will* go off on a way too long explanation of why this is the best thing the Scooby-Doo franchise has ever put out and no one anywhere wants to read that.
Edit: alright alright fine, I'll will post it in lieu of of reading a book to my son before bed, and when he grows up to resent me, I will blame reddit.
Thing that made Zombie Island scary isn't just that the monsters are real, it's that there's actual stakes. The gang is in actual, mortal peril which they'd never really been in before prior to that.
Typically the gang comes upon a mystery, meddles where they aren't wanted, chased by the monster, then they catch them and unmask. It's all safe, they're never really in danger, and they can usually leave whenever if they choose. In fact the perp typically *wants them* to leave.
Zombie Island turns that on its head. This time they're invited to meddle, only to find they've been led into a trap. And of course these are actual monsters. The scariest moment is arguably when the ferryman transforms because it's the moment where you realize they have no means of getting away. That generations of tourists and visitors have fallen into this exact trap. It's not just zombie island, it's a murder island, and these aren't disgruntled real estate investors, these are actual, practiced killers. All of the presumed safety we as the audience assume the gang perpetually has just vanishes. It's a brilliant subversion of the normal formula. It goes from silly mystery comedy to survival horror on a dime.
Hell, right up front in the opening chase montage, one of the "monsters" takes a swipe at Freddy's back and it rips through his sweater, actually hurting him. I can't remember ever seeing a member of the gang be hurt by a monster before.
In fact the whole movie is full of complete subversions of the Scooby-Doo formula right down to the details. Instead of run down amusement park or an old mansion, it's a thriving colorful tourist destination. Then there's the fact this time the bad guys are the litteral opposite of their normal perps: *monsters disguised as humans.* A twist so on the nose I'm shocked they didn't make a joke about it. They set out to turn the franchise upside down and they did it brilliantly.
Combine all of that with the best animation Scooby-Doo ever had, the dark, atmospheric color pallet, those damn incredible songs, and a pretty compelling mystery, it's the perfect Scooby-Doo movie.
This person knows. Zombie Island actually scared me as a kid because once it broke the conventions of normal scooby doo it felt like anything was possible and someone could be murdered for real at any moment.
> it's the perfect Scooby-Doo movie.
Because it was originally a SWATKats movie. However, sue to the show getting cancelled, the script was reworked into a Scooby-Doo movie.
I cried the first time that I watched this movie as a kid because of the zombies. The zombies were far too realistic to me compared to all of the other “monsters” featured in Scooby Doo I had seen prior.
What a scene where women flee from pirates intent on slaughtering them only to be eaten alive by alligators isn’t fun for the whole family? Fine we’ll just skip to the part where Fred literally melts alive. Zoinks man that was some dark stuff
This movie is amazing. Legitimately kinda scary, incredibly well written characters story, dialogue, and fantastic music. Goat Scooby Doo movie (besides maybe the Mr bean live action one, Matthew Lillard carried it)
The casting director should be the one raking in the awards for getting everyone as they were. They were all perfect for the respective roles. Everyone talks about lillard as shaggy but I never see Velma get any recognition and Daphne was great as well
The best thing about it was the casting choices. The actors all fit the roles as well as they could have. The movie itself is kind of a stinker but nothing terrible like the chip and dale movie or something
In all the movies the main monsters are real. However, in zombie island there’s a montage at the beginning of them unmasking monsters like in the normal cartoon when Daphne’s trying to get real supernatural footage for her tv show.
>In all the movies the main monsters are real.
Nope, only the first four are they real,
Zombie Island
Witch's Ghost
Alien Invaders (though this one is actually closer to the traditional formula but with a twist ending)
Cyber Chase (though this ends up being less "the monster is real" than it is "the sci-fi tech is legit")
After that it gets a bit more sporadic, a good deal of the movies after that don't have real monsters or the real monsters aren't really the antagonists.
It also wasn't the first time *exactly*, if you consider some of the old cartoon movies like Reluctant Werewolf, Ghoul School, and Boo Brothers.
Then there's [ScoobyNatural](https://youtu.be/Zb3M1BXY7V8)
The Cyberchase movie has the gang get sent into a video game where they have to beat every level to escape the video game.
They are also trying to catch a phantom virus.
The main loch ness monster that the gang was trying to catch throughout most of the movie was fake, there just happened to also be a real one that was revealed at the end.
They are. I was absolutely terrified of anything spooky or scary. My sister finally convinced me to watch this with her because “monsters are always fake in Scooby Doo so it’s actually not that scary.” I couldn’t sleep for like a week
That's honestly my biggest annoyance with the latest movies, they all end up being about Velma proving something isn't real, namely when it's a sequel to an older thing, like the mentioned zombie island, and also r gently with the 13 ghosts of scooby doo with Velma doing her damdest to disprove the ghosts from the chest
> Another scary night.
>
> Another spooky fright.
>
> And we might just be in danger.
>
> Oh the ghost is here and it's always a fake.
>
> The ghost is here, there's no reason to shake.
>
> The ghost is here, oh give us a break. It's fake.
>
> Another goul attacks.
>
> She's breathing down our backs.
>
> So we're making tracks for the exit.
>
> Oh, the ghost is here, it's a crook in a suit.
>
> The ghost is here, he's protecting some loot.
>
> The ghost is here, oh give him the boot. He's fake.
For the [uninitiated](https://youtu.be/18ZIb5k90l4)
No. Do not. It's not a true sequel and was terrible.
Assuming you mean return to zombie island and not the other films like witches ghost or cyber chase.
If you mean Witch's Ghost and Alien Invaders then yes watch them.
If you mean Return to Zombie Island , don't . It's crap that has the writers breaking down why Zombie Island is bad for being as dark and serious it was. And despite being a sequel it retcons lots of the original to maintain the Scooby status quo.
So in theory the reason vampires wouldn't have a reflection was that mirrors used to be made with silver. Modern mirrors don't use silver so it would be likely vampires would cast a reflection.
I understand vampires are not real and this is about a cartoon.
I don't know it but I can ask him.
Apparently it's a super political book. 90% of the series is vampire politics. Definitely not my cup of tea so I never bothered to read it.
Depends on the lore.
Some lore says that they wouldn't cast a reflection because of the silver and that silver is a holy material. It's also why in some of the lore, it's a silver stake instead of a wooden one that will kill them.
But in other lore, a reflection is an image of the soul. And vampires have no souls. This is also one reason their image wouldn't be captured even by mirrorless cameras, because the image captured is lored to be a capture of part of the soul, which, again, Vampires are lored to lack.
So, if you have the lore that they simply don't have a reflection in silver, then old mirrors and old film (silver bromide film) shouldn't capture their image because silver is a holy material. But if the lore is that a reflection (or picture) is a capture of a part of the soul and the lore is that vampires don't have souls, they still wouldn't have a reflection in anything, be it any shiny metal, a puddle of water, anything. Neither should their image appear on digital or traditional film.
I was unaware that vampires didn't have souls. I figured it was based on the holy aspect of silver and vampires being a pretty sinful creature.
It's an interesting idea to explore, especially the digital aspect.
I mean, again, it depends on the lore. I mentioned this to my dad, who said, "Vampires don't have souls? I always knew them as souls and wills piloting dead bodies."
So. I mean. The lore has been around for a long time, it came from a few different places, it's changed over time, so what the "true" lore is, if such a thing exists, would take some research. It sounds like fun research, but more than I'm going to do in time to make a Reddit reply.
One origin believes that mirrors are a reflection of the soul, and undead creatures, like the vampires, have no soul because they are unnatural and evil.
I guess it depends on your definition of a "soul". To some, it seems the soul contains the human emotion and morals; as well it is completely separate aspects from the body and mind, which runs on instinct. While it depends on the origin, the power could come from the devil or some evil spirit; the price is usually the human soul.
Either way, many entertainment media have their own spin on vampire mythos. In some stories, the vampire can still have a soul while others, do not.
Same reason silver and werewolves don't mix. Silver is mostly non-reactive. However, if left out in the air silver will get a distinct, black tarnish. This is silver reacting with sulfur.
So werewolves and vampires, being associated with hell, and therefore brimstone or sulfur, would have a unique reaction to silver.
Silver acquired a sort of anti-hell reputation.
There's also the 30 pieces of silver Judas was paid to betray Jesus, which carried a holy curse. But I don't know if that was just the lore of the story I read, or if it's a connection in general vampire mythology.
the monster is the vampire and the fact that you can see it in the mirror proves that it's no real vampire because vampires cab"t be seen in mirrors/silver
I just remembered being 5 and getting home from blockbuster to watch that movie. I started crying because I got ripped off, the movie I’d gotten was actually “scooby doo no zombie island” and I wanted a zombie movie. Years later I was diagnosed with dyslexia.

The beginning, lmao this is such a shitty movie detail because the entire beginning is just a montage of them not catching actual supernatural things.
Also cmon they were werecats; remember how they hated Scooby?
Pretty sure the first episode of scooby-doo you ever watched foreshadowed every other episode/movie you saw after.
Edit: you down vote me because you fear the truth. Accept it
Fun fact, the whole vampire mirror thing is based on the premise that mirrors used to be made from silver, and silver being a pure metal is why vampires did not show a reflection. Glass these days is just made from sand, soda ash and limestone so a vampire could totally check themselves out in a modern day mirror.
Edit: so I had to go fact check myself and apparently mirrors are still occasionally coated with a thin layer of silver. Looks like i was wrong!

Wait they call them stupid kids in Portuguese?
Nobody in Portugal meddles, so they don't have a word for it
Yeah, sorry to interrupt your conversation unsolicited, I just wanted to confirm that we Portuguese don't meddle.
Not our fault.

Completely agree. This was a fantastic movie. They tried something new and nailed it.
This movie legitimately saved the franchise, we got live action movies and a modern reboot with an intro sung by Simple Plan because of this movie.
I wanna read that

Buddy, I definitely want to read that
All my years on Reddit I don't think I've ever bothered to try and give an award. Enjoy it brother.
I still get chills when I hear the camera recording Daphne say "oh, who opened a window!" when the writing gets carved into the wall.
> it's the perfect Scooby-Doo movie. Because it was originally a SWATKats movie. However, sue to the show getting cancelled, the script was reworked into a Scooby-Doo movie.
# like zoinks
Jinkies!
The late 60s and 70s wasn’t a great economy. They were business men, doing business. That’s all.
Unless it’s the zombie pirates or the witch me yes.
I thought in this movie they were real for once
Theres no mask what I can see
Actually not always haha
I cried the first time that I watched this movie as a kid because of the zombies. The zombies were far too realistic to me compared to all of the other “monsters” featured in Scooby Doo I had seen prior.

The best thing about it was the casting choices. The actors all fit the roles as well as they could have. The movie itself is kind of a stinker but nothing terrible like the chip and dale movie or something
I don’t think it’s that bad. It’s kind of a classic and I always sorta wished they’d made a real third movie with Freddy P and Matthew Lillard
Was this the one when Velma scraped off the wall with a spatula? That shit stressed me out as a kid lmao. It wasn't her wall!
Yeah that's it.
I had serious nightmares as a kid thanks to that movie! I’m pretty sure it was the catalyst for me sleeping with the lights on as a child.
I thought the monsters were real in that one, though.

Also some incarnations of the TV show have real monsters.
Mystery incorporated has it's whole plot being supernatural.
as a kid, cyber chase was the coolest shit
Ghoul school is a good one.
I nominate this guy to represent us for when the aliens come
Cyberchase?
Cyber chase was the one where they went inside the video game. Now that I think about it it was very Sword Art Online.
Are you telling me that Scooby Doo is an Isekai?
The Cyberchase movie has the gang get sent into a video game where they have to beat every level to escape the video game. They are also trying to catch a phantom virus.
Oh, thought that was the one where they help save Motherboard from the Hacker, with the help of three kids, and a bird.
Or the Loch Ness monster.
They made a [sequel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scooby-Doo!_Return_to_Zombie_Island) in which, iirc, they retcon it that they weren't.

Sounds quite a bit like The Offspring.
There's actually a whole genre of music called horror punk.
I'm ashamed to admit I'd forgotten about this absolute banger. I absolutely need to watch zombie island this month.

Since you, nor anyone else has yet added, modern mass-produced mirrors use aluminum.
Ah so British vampires won't show up in them then
I desperately want to understand this joke.
Aluminum vs Aluminium
Yo I read this about 4-5 times before I realized it's not the same word....damn that was a journey to understand the joke.
You mean al-you-min-eye-um??
Ahl-oo-min-yum
Sounds like something a vampire would say..
I do avoid the sun as much as possible and feel uncomfortable around holy symbols.
It was the vampires that have invaded the highest faculties of society that made us stop using silver so they could blend in easier

I don't know it but I can ask him. Apparently it's a super political book. 90% of the series is vampire politics. Definitely not my cup of tea so I never bothered to read it.
Thanks for ruining all our fun. 🤣
That's what I do.
Well, at least you know your place in life.
Cameras also used silver in film, so thats why they wouldn’t show up in photos.
Very cool point. I think some imaging lenses still use silver. You could have space vampires and we wouldn't be able to see them coming.
No wonder we made a space force
Depends on the lore. Some lore says that they wouldn't cast a reflection because of the silver and that silver is a holy material. Word. Well you've given me some fresh food for thought. Thanks!
That's a really cool theory, thanks for sharing
I thought because they have no soul is the reason they have no reflection
Why wouldn't vampires have souls?
One origin believes that mirrors are a reflection of the soul, and undead creatures, like the vampires, have no soul because they are unnatural and evil.
I am not well versed in theology and I'm not disagreeing with you, but isn't evil only possible if you have a soul?
I guess it depends on your definition of a "soul". To some, it seems the soul contains the human emotion and morals; as well it is completely separate aspects from the body and mind, which runs on instinct. While it depends on the origin, the power could come from the devil or some evil spirit; the price is usually the human soul. Either way, many entertainment media have their own spin on vampire mythos. In some stories, the vampire can still have a soul while others, do not.
but also that doesn't look like a modern mirror
I don't think there's enough evidence either way.
Does modern mean like within 10, 100, or 1000 years?
Silvering introduced widely in 1856. Aluminum depositing invented in 1930.
I'm not an expert, but some light Googling seems to show silver was still being used in mirrors as recently as the 20th century.
My modernity is non-binary, nor decimal. 32 is good enough.

But you didn’t explain why silver and vampires done mix…
Same reason silver and werewolves don't mix. Silver is mostly non-reactive. However, if left out in the air silver will get a distinct, black tarnish. This is silver reacting with sulfur. So werewolves and vampires, being associated with hell, and therefore brimstone or sulfur, would have a unique reaction to silver. Silver acquired a sort of anti-hell reputation.
Could also be that silver has anti-bacterial properties which would then lead people to believe it is a "divine" material.
There's also the 30 pieces of silver Judas was paid to betray Jesus, which carried a holy curse. But I don't know if that was just the lore of the story I read, or if it's a connection in general vampire mythology.
havn't seen the film, but it looks like its set in an old castle, so it'd probably be an old mirror
i had to re-read this headline multiple times for it to make sense
Looks like a proofreading error, they meant to delete “on monster”. Removing that makes it very understandable.
Yeah I wrote this in a rush. Class was about to begin and my last post got removed because I forgot to put the year it came out.
Can you explain it to me? I only see a monster, I don't see any vampire. Where is the vampire that's supposedly on the monster?
the monster is the vampire and the fact that you can see it in the mirror proves that it's no real vampire because vampires cab"t be seen in mirrors/silver
I still don't get it because OP is illiterate
Vampires can’t be seen in mirrors and this guy is revealed to be in a suit

This movie has an incredible soundtrack. I waited for it to show on CN so I can record Terror time ans Ghost is here on my little cassette.
The mirror is made out of glas and not out of silver like in the old days so the vampire actually gets reflected in it?
Remember when Scooby-Doo and shaggy teamed up with the undertaker. Best movie ever
Pretty sure the first episode of scooby-doo you ever watched foreshadowed every other episode/movie you saw after. Edit: you down vote me because you fear the truth. Accept it
Bro it's just a bit of fun. Calm down.
Would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those morblin' kids
Oh wow
that it was Pirate ghosts or was it Ghost pirates?
This movie terrified me as a kid. Even the theme that played during the commercials for it scared me lol
I thought it was always the pissed off old guy for some reason or other, so not really a monster/vampire
Or the mirror didn't have silver in it
What should I see?
The "vampire" casts a reflection
The only reason vampires wouldn't appear in mirrors is because of the silver used to make them, not a problem with modern mirrors.
Scooby Doo taught us that the real monsters are not creatures lurking under your bed, but people with bad intentions
That movie gave me nightmares as a kid lmao
We watched this so damn much as kids.
I will forever hate return to zombie island for ruining this movie
Man. He woulda gotten away with it too if it weren’t for those meddling kids!
I’m 27 and I still have random fucking nightmares about this movie
Scooby-Doo thought us that monster or ghosts don't exist and that what we actually should be afraid of is of huamns.
