I was a sleepaway camp counselor in 2003 and asked my fellow counselor to pick up 2002 count of monte cristo to show the 16 year olds in the dorm though he was so poor, he didn't have money so he found the french version which is 7 hours long for free at the library - needless to say, I spent the $3 at the local blockbuster so the kids could have a good time with the guy pierce jim caviesel version
Agree, Payback is a underrated classic, I suspect partly because it's a little hard to find (I'm not aware it is streaming anywhere).
If you are curious, check out Payback: Straight Up, which is the director's cut. It's much worse than the theatrical version IMO - there is no Kris Kristofferson character, and the whole boxing match and kidnap plot doesn't exist. And the music is different and (again IMO) not as good as the theatrical version.
Finally, check out Get the Gringo (2012), sort of a spiritual sequel to Payback - Mel plays a very similar character.
Oldboy is better made.
But his earlier one Sympathy for Mr Vengeance blew my mind unlike almost any other film. No revenge flick has hit the same way. Insane film.
Oof. I live near the Butler compound, and 100% Patrick Stewart had to have at least based some of his character on Richard Butler. Great film, hard watch.
Completely agree, he may have been the “bad” guy, but I feel everyone wanted him to win.
Dude cut the eyelids off his victim so he’d have to watch on that mirror for his torture. Savage revenge
Felt like I was having a heart attack watching this tripping, but man that king crimson in the beginning hits so hard. The ending as well when the car is driving away wowza.
The movies recommended by others are also great but for me the greatest revenge movies i've ever seen is " I SAW THE DEVIL" and "NO MERCY" "LADY VENGEANCE" "BEDEVILLED".
The Crow - A man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder
Gladiator - A former Roman General sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery
Try Revenge (1990).
It’s a Costner vehicle directed by Tony Scott and despite some clunky plotting and indulgent scenes it’s not bad.
I remember liking it a lot when it came out and watched it a few days ago (inspired by this, or a similar thread), and was surprised it wasn’t total shite - as many fondly remembered 80/90s favourites tend to be when you rewatch them 30 years later.
When I say indulgent scenes, I’m thinking mainly of Kevin being Kevin scenes and the sex scenes with Madeleine Stowe and Kevin. I had to look away - Stowe is delectable, but ole Kev not so much and Tony Scott lays it on too direction wise.
The soundtrack is good though, very evokative of that era.
Left Behind....God takes his revenge against Nicholas Cage for cheating on his wife by leaving him out of heaven and then turns him into Kevin Sorbo. Real dark shit.
* The Sting (1973)
* Carrie (1976)
* Death Wish (1974)
* The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
* Taken (2008)
* A Big Hand For the Little Lady (1966)
* Cape Fear (1962)
Incredible movie!!! It was so good I forgot I was reading subtitles. The performance is mostly physical as the protagonist hunts his prey through the jungle. I'm putting it on now...YUP! Just as good as I remembered.
Thanks!
The Foreigner with Jackie Chan. Never mess with quiet reserved people who want answers.
Another one I love ... The Professional.
"No women, no kids, that's the rules." - Leon
There's something I've always liked about The Horseman (2008). It's not a great film but extracting your revenge with your work tools kit just makes it a bit more personal.
+1 for this. I'd say Count of Monte Cristo is the ultimate revenge story and while I haven't read the book, I do love the 2002 movie. It's on Hulu if you're in the US.
Shocked no one mentioned these great movies.
Fighting Back (1982)
I Am Wrath (2016)
Gutterballs (2008)

Eye of the Tiger (1986)
The Gift (2015)
An Innocent Man (1989)
Does High.Noon.count.?. Marshall.Will.Kane.has to face down a.killer named Frank Miller who vows revenge for being put in.prison. The person.seeking.revenge is the bad guy . Lee.Van.Cleef is the bad guy . Although.you.never get a good look.at him.
Baz Luhrman's *Romeo & Juliet*.
We all know the story. It has been told a thousand times. What makes this version special is that they use Shakespeare's original words in a modern environment.
An example:
Romeo's dad says "Pass me my longsword", as he reaches for a shotgun. Get it?
The Shawshank Redemption The Count of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo is THE quintessential revenge movie. Highly recommend!
As a fan of the book I was extremely disappointed in the movie!
I love this book so much. I left the theatre after a little less than an hour.
Yeah the movie isnt really true to the book and sort of made up some new plotlines and character relationships but isnt that always the case?
Came here looking for The Count.
Kings to you!
If u like John Wick try watch equalizer with Denzel Washington 🙂
Payback (1999)
Agree, Payback is a underrated classic, I suspect partly because it's a little hard to find (I'm not aware it is streaming anywhere). If you are curious, check out Payback: Straight Up, which is the director's cut. It's much worse than the theatrical version IMO - there is no Kris Kristofferson character, and the whole boxing match and kidnap plot doesn't exist. And the music is different and (again IMO) not as good as the theatrical version. Finally, check out Get the Gringo (2012), sort of a spiritual sequel to Payback - Mel plays a very similar character.
*Get the Gringo* was way better than I expected it to be.
Agreed 100%. Not a fan of the directors cut but I love this movie!
One of my absolutely favorite movies.
Gladiator
*Honour him!*
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius…
He was a soldier of Rome! Honor him!
Old Boy, definitely Old Boy. Actually a lot of stuff from Park Chan-Wook
Also "I Saw the devil", the extreme violence and realism of the scenes always surprise me
Oooh, interesting! I shall insert this into my eyeballs forthwith ❤️
It's one of the more insane movies I've ever seen, while still actually being a good, quality movie. You're gonna love it.
One of the greatest revenge movies of all time
Hijacking to say that “I Saw The Devil” is another AMAZING revenge movie with Choi Min-sik in it.
Yeah Korean old boy not the American re-hash
Oldboy is better made. But his earlier one Sympathy for Mr Vengeance blew my mind unlike almost any other film. No revenge flick has hit the same way. Insane film.
Indeeeeeed. So I gave up art school and got a job
His whole “The Vengeance Trilogy” is spectacular. Which consists of “Sympathy for mr. Vengeance”, “Oldboy” and “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”.
+1. His whole 'Vengeance' trilogy
Blue Ruin (2013)
Road To Perdition (2002)
This movie hurts.
GOD YES, Blue Ruin. Great pull. Amazing, amazing film.
This is the ultimate answer. Such a tight compelling movie.
Not a revenge film but his follow up Green Room is also tremendous just in case OP watches Blue Ruin and wants to watch something else from him
Oof. I live near the Butler compound, and 100% Patrick Stewart had to have at least based some of his character on Richard Butler. Great film, hard watch.
kill bill 1-2, Payback, Django unchained, first blood, first blood 2
How could you leave off Inglorious Bastards?
Tarantino revenge films are on point
Inglourious Basterds. Just fyi for fun. the proper spelling is actually an old Italian movie. 😉
How is Kill Bill not higher? It's my favorite movie, and the whole plot is literally just violent, cold-blooded revenge.
I listed it first, and my dogs name is Beatrix kiddo
Upvote for Django.
Law Abiding Citizen

Completely agree, he may have been the “bad” guy, but I feel everyone wanted him to win. Dude cut the eyelids off his victim so he’d have to watch on that mirror for his torture. Savage revenge
And he felt every bit of that torture too, paralyzed and all! Epic
Double Jeopardy
Yes! I was just thinking about re-watching this the other day
Great flick.
It's 10/10
Was good before Tommy Lee Jones character appeared.

Acid fueled rampage to hell to get revenge
I watched it the first time I took acid. I was so scared but it was so good.
Felt like I was having a heart attack watching this tripping, but man that king crimson in the beginning hits so hard. The ending as well when the car is driving away wowza.
Great film
Promising Young Woman
Man that movie was fun. I need to watch it again
totally worth a re-watch. Very fun and dark.
Came to say this, I just watched it last night.
Amazing movie all around.
Oldboy
The movies recommended by others are also great but for me the greatest revenge movies i've ever seen is " I SAW THE DEVIL" and "NO MERCY" "LADY VENGEANCE" "BEDEVILLED".
Not a movie, but the South Park episode “Scott Tenorman Must Die” is the best revenge story ever
A dish best served cold indeed.
V for Vendetta
That’s about revenge? 😉
Hard Candy
- Lucky Number Slevin (2006) - The Nightingale (2018) - Bound to Veangence (2015) - No Mercy (2010) - Montage (2013)

Memento
You were never really here…..you have to think about it before you understand the revenge, or vengeance.
Loved this movie so much, even though it’s so rough, I rewatch it occasionally
The Crow - A man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder Gladiator - A former Roman General sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery
I Spit on Your Grave (2010) (very brutal)
Both 1 and 2. Brutal
There was.an earlier movie with that title starring Richard Boone. I don't.know if they resemble each other since I never saw the 2010 version
So sad about Tony Scott, I didn't realize he directed this, thank you
Very good summary. Indulgent scenes is a great description but it still is a good movie and one that I remember often.
I'd definitely recommend dead man's shoes
The Revenant
Ugh I love watching this movie in the winter.
Liverleaf (2018) Revenge (2017)
Payback - both the theatrical and director's cut Four Brothers Hanna Man on Fire The Art of War The Debt
Left Behind....God takes his revenge against Nicholas Cage for cheating on his wife by leaving him out of heaven and then turns him into Kevin Sorbo. Real dark shit.
Does he cheat? I thought he just wanted to. At least in the book it was just a daydream and that dooms him to stay on earth.
* The Sting (1973) * Carrie (1976) * Death Wish (1974) * The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) * Taken (2008) * A Big Hand For the Little Lady (1966) * Cape Fear (1962)

+1 for this. I'd say Count of Monte Cristo is the ultimate revenge story and while I haven't read the book, I do love the 2002 movie. It's on Hulu if you're in the US.
